#105 How To Embed A New Role Working Virtually
#105: How to embed a new role when working Virtually In this episode I wanted to talk you through and share some advice on how to successfully embed a new role when you are working virtually, even though many of us are months and months into this pandemic and are used to working virtually it is a challenge introducing clinical roles when we don't have that face-to-face interaction with the team as we usually would, and in the field of primary care, and in my particular niche, which is working in primary care networks, I know many people have indirectly made the error of thinking once we've recruited, then we're sorted and they have underestimated how much time and attention and investment is required in making sure those new roles feel welcomed. In order to successfully embed a new role, it starts before they join your organisation, and it starts in the design of the role. You have to think very carefully on what do you want the role to do? Start at the very beginning This all starts at the very, very beginning. Even before you've created the job description, what do we want this role to do? And it should be a collaborative effort. If you're in a primary care network, it is an exercise that is done with more than just the clinical director. We need all of the practices on board. For those of you operating outside the field of primary care, you will need to work out who you need to be talking to, to make sure when you do recruit, everybody is as clear as they can be on what this person is going to be doing. And to design that role either virtually or in person, get out some post-it notes and process map what the patient journey looks like. Now, work out where the gaps are and then process map what that role would look like if you had your ideal role or that missing piece of the jigsaw in place. Celebrate Small Wins Another area where I feel like people overlook this, and this is celebrating small wins. So again, your new hire is working virtually. So if they have a good day, who are they going to tell? And the answer is, they're going to tell you, and then you're going to broadcast that into your organisation. If they don't feel comfortable doing it themselves. For more weekly insights and advice sign up to my newsletter. #103: How to Sell your Big Ideas
So far in our selling series, we have covered how to overcome your fear of selling and how to sell with confidence. This episode is geared to those of you who are employees. You may be in a leadership position and may sometimes fear your ideas are overlooked and not taken seriously. So, in this episode, I am sharing some ways to help you better formulate and share your big ideas. The Problem, The Plan and The Plant To begin with, your idea needs to be solving a problem. It needs to be clear that your problem is frustrating or time wasting, cumbersome, inefficient, or a costly issue that effects your patients, customers, team or key stakeholders. The Fish Bone Diagram is a great tool to use to help you start. It helps you identify all the things you will need to consider when developing a new project. I have created our very own THC Primary Care template for you to download here. It’s our most popular tool. Present your Idea Informally The next phase is to present your idea informally and casually because again you are gathering data on how people think and feel about your proposition. You must look for holes in your idea, potential pitfalls and seek feedback from others. This will help you gauge whether you think it will get the green light. If your idea gets shot down in flames and but you still think it’s got legs. You may have to play a longer game. The Long Game When I was a Business Development Manager at a university, it took us 3 years to get the approval to build a stem cell laboratory. Hopefully, your idea won’t take 3 years, but it may take some effort on your part to position, persuade, influence, compromise, scale back or scale up to bring people on board. The goal is to get the green light knowing that some people may still need convincing. To get through this you will need resilience. You will need to develop a thick skin, be approachable and you will need to know your stuff and become an expert. Keep it simple If you work in an organisation that makes decisions by committee there will inevitably come the time to present your big idea. This is your moment to shine. Your weeks of hard work will be worth it and again you need to position your idea like it’s a no brainer. Make it simple to communicate and understand. Remember, if you confuse people, you lose people! And remember to speak to people’s motivations and values. I would love to hear how you get on! Don’t forget to grab our Fish Bone Diagram Download to help you shape your next big idea or project. For more weekly insights and advice sign up to my newsletter. #102 It's not a weakness to be Kind with Dr Katrina Sheikh
Dr Katrina Sheikh is an Acute Internal Medicine SPR and Chief Registrar at the Royal College of Physicians. Katrina went into medicine because she absolutely loves meeting people, hearing their stories and helping them, and she loves science, so the two combined into a career in medicine. Katrina joins me on the podcast today to talk about the importance of speaking up when something isn’t right. Katrina shares some of her experiences of working in a toxic environment and the steps she took to manage the situation. She shares the importance of documenting when things aren’t right and how to manage conflict and different working styles. And finally shares how kindness is not a weakness and that if you are kind, it doesn’t mean you are not strong. “I say to undergraduates who contact me about postgraduate study – What is going to make you happy? And then do it. Because life is too short to not do what makes you happy.” Dr Katrina Sheikh This week on The Business of Healthcare: Why Katrina went into medicine. #101: How to Sell with Confidence
In episode 99, I talked you through how to overcome your fear of selling and why we should sell our services and our time. If you are yet to listen to that episode, have a listen here. Today, I am going to talk you through how to sell with confidence. Get Organised Define and refine your offer for your ideal community or client. You need to be able to tell people what you do and what you can help them achieve. You need to agree your price - and keep it consistent. Showcase your credentials and expertise. I talked you through this in episode 99. Self-belief When I have total belief in how I can help someone, I really don’t have any fears or doubts in promoting or selling my offer. So, I invite you to consider the level of belief you have in your service. If you are going to run a successful business then I suggest this is an area you invest in, perhaps in the form of a coach to help you see how amazing you really are. Asking for the Sale Notice I do not say ‘pitch’! I do not pitch to potential clients - we just talk. I’ll ask them how they are, what they are struggling with and what they have tried in the past. I will ask them if it’s OK if I share a little of what we do and how I think we can help them. The only sales trick I use is the scarcity technique. This is a tried and tested method, and you will see this every day in the form of early bird pricing, introductory offers and limited tickets. Simple, easy, not salesy and it works. Dealing with rejection Sales is a numbers game. The more people you have in your network, community, your funnel, your pipeline, the more opportunities you have for people to say yes. So, you need to get out there and ask in a way that feels good to you and maintain this energy when people say no. Remember: people will say no and that’s OK. A visualisation exercise Close your eyes and visualise doing your job and loving it. Or visualise a moment when a client has praised you for the work you have done together. Savour that feeling. That is the energy you must hold and embody when you make your next call or email. That energy has so much power. Use it. #99: How to Overcome the Fear of Selling
As we are soon to be approaching our 100th podcast episode, I wanted to address the topic of selling. Whether that is selling products and services or selling ideas, I know many of you find this challenging for various reasons, and likewise, I have also struggled with this. The topic of selling is HUGE, so I won’t attempt to cover everything in just one episode. Today I will cover: Background on my own consultancy I run a consultancy specialising in supporting Primary Care Networks, general practices, GP federations providing business consultancy and interim project and operational management. We also work with healthcare entrepreneurs and people wanting to establish a service in the field of health. The fear of selling and why we buy I think many people fear selling their services because they do not want to come across as too salesy, they do not want to put people off and be seen as annoying. I also think there is a big fear that they won’t be liked. Valuing your own and other people’s expertise Today I’m asking you – would you expect your employees to turn up to work for free? If you hired their services, would you expect a personal trainer, an assistant, an accountant, or a solicitor to work for free? You have the expertise; you have the qualifications and the track record. You already give tonnes of value for free. The next imperative step is to get paid. How to show someone your credentials and expertise There are many ways you can showcase your credentials and expertise. I share some of the things that I do including: Blog writing Free resources Guest speaking Sharing testimonials Sharing Case studies Sending weekly newsletters Tips and advice on social media Offering help in WhatsApp groups. What could work for you? Keep listening and over the next few weeks, I will talk you through how to sell and more importantly how to sell with confidence. Work with me I offer two key services: Interim primary care network management support Coaching calls for healthcare professionals Now if this podcast resonated with you and are a healthcare professional requiring some dedicated 1-2-1 to help you work through some of the challenges around building your business and selling your services, I would love to help you.
