#188 How to build Legitimacy

This week on The Business of Healthcare Podcast I am discussing Building Legitimacy.  Having a boundary spanning role and building legitimacy go hand in hand.  It can feel like you are constantly trying to build legitimacy and when you join a new organisation – you have to start from scratch and you have to show who you are and share your values.    Other people can build your legitimacy by word of mouth testimonial / referral and this is really important, but you still have to live up to this expectation.  Do this by trying to get to know people, make it personal and make it not all about you but showcase your experience.    Points that are discussed  Offer your help with no expectation  Quietly putting out fires in the background that other people don't know that is there.  See the light at the end of the tunnel  It’s hard but so rewarding  Reflect on those little successes    You need to understand the context you work within – please take a listen to my episode 171 Understanding the context you work within by clicking here to explore this further    The most practical piece of advice I can offer is, be visible do what you say you are going to do and make the time to genuinely get to know people and be yourself.      Book mentioned in this episode  Systems Convening    Work with me    I’m Tara Humphrey and I’m the founder of THC Primary Care, a leading healthcare consultancy. I provide project and network management to Primary Care Networks and consulting support to clinical leads. #180 Managing the Media in General Practice with Emma Wilkinson

Welcome back to The Business of Healthcare Podcast episode 180 where this week I am talking to Emma Wilkinson who is a Freelance Health Journalist, Editor and Teacher.  We had a great discussion regarding Emma’s journey to becoming a journalist, the impact of negative press and her journalistic values.  We originally connected through Twitter after Emma had written a post which I thought raised a really balanced argument about what is going on with reporting in General Practice so I sent her a message and now she is a guest on my podcast.   There is lots of detail to be taken from this weeks episode and it’s great to have a conversation with Emma discussing what is going on in the field of healthcare.    Also a great point we laughed about, do not be scared of journalists 🤣     How to connect with Emma  Twitter  Website    This week on The Business of Healthcare:  The journey to becoming a journalist  Journalistic Values  Impacts of Negative Press  How to find your sources  What Emma loves about Journalism     Work with me    I’m Tara Humphrey and I’m the founder of THC Primary Care, a leading healthcare consultancy. #179 Comparison & Fear of Missing Out

This week on The Business of Healthcare Podcast I discuss Comparison & Fear of Missing Out. It's something even the most confident of people can worry about and I have to remember that even with the best planning in the world, sometimes you then have to take a step back. We need to prioritise, think about the pressure to contribute and become better at saying no, it's not a bad thing. It's difficult trying to balance all the plates sometimes, but take a step back, breathe and look at the bigger picture.
