#248 Creating the next level of leaders with Dr Murray Ellender

I am delighted to welcome Dr Murray Ellender to the Business of Healthcare podcast this week. Murray is, amongst other things, a GP, a dad of four, a keen runner and the CEO of eConsult; the all-encompassing consultation platform which already has a firm footing in Primary Care (with an establishing presence in secondary care) and works to collect patient information, support triage, manage demand and ensure patients can be seen by the right healthcare professional, at the right time. As someone who has worked at the top of his organisation for 9 years, whilst juggling the continuing demands of his 18-year GP career, I was keen to quiz Murray on the following: All about eConsult and how the platform works; both for patients and GP practices The NHS healthtech landscape and where the opportunities and the frustrations lie The eConsult financial model Leadership and management approach What’s on the horizon for eConsult going forwards How to juggle a multitude of roles and demands – and enjoy it! #247 Personalised Care Planning in Practice

We have an emotional one for you this week where I share my experience of creating a care plan for my youngest who has type 1 diabetes.   It's funny because, on one hand, I say I am absolutely fine, and then when I talk about it, I find it incredibly tough and end up crying, and I’m not really a crier.  Maybe it's the pent-up stress of it all because it's relentless.   I’m sharing my experience because I straddle both worlds. I am a health care professional, and I am a mum and a carer to my daughter with a long-term condition. I know all services are overwhelming, so I do not want to bother anyone. I also know there are online resources there, but I also want to talk to some face to face or at least a phone call with someone who kind of knows me. BUT…..  we do have a tremendous amount of support. I just need to ask for it!   In this podcast, I share:   Personalised Care Planning, the highs and lows Multidisciplinary Team Approach Our lived experience of Type 1 Diabetes The transition from Primary to Secondary School  It can be a lot to process, and it's ok to feel emotional   Work with me    I’m Tara Humphrey and I’m the founder of THC Primary Care, a leading healthcare consultancy. To date, I’ve worked with 11 Training Hubs and supported over 120 Primary Care Networks and 3 GP Federations.  I understand and appreciate the complexity of healthcare and what it takes to deliver projects across multiple practices.  I have over 20 years of project management and business development experience across the private and public sector and have an MBA in Leadership and Management in Healthcare. #246 Disrupting your thinking to enable change with Dawn Jarvis

As regular listeners will know, I am always keen to promote great leaders on the Business of Healthcare podcast, and offer a platform for others, including myself, to learn from their skills, knowledge, and experiences, particularly when it comes to those leaders who are open and willing to effect disruptive change. Leaders don’t come any more fearless, passionate, or purposeful than this week’s guest Dawn Jarvis, Managing Director of People and OD Partners, a consultancy focused who are committed to supporting the public sector to deliver better value with better leadership. Having worked previously at senior level in many areas of the NHS and the UK public sector more broadly, Dawn is now based in Australia and spends her time coaching and mentoring c-level executives (and their teams), as well as offering services in mediation and facilitation, transformation, strategy and improving team dynamics. Dawn and I discussed: Making the leap into consultancy and growing an internationally renowned business from the grass roots up Comparing notes on the Australian and UK healthcare systems Bridging the gap between what organisations think they want versus what they actually need Dawn’s approach to facilitation How to effect, often difficult, organisational change and transformation Development of The Stellar Model What Dawn most enjoys about her work - and why we believe loving what you do is key to maintaining demand for your services (and realising success) Dawn’s preparations for her PhD and why she thrives on consistently challenging herself   Mentions in this episode: Dawn Jarvis and Munu Wuthuga Dardakiin: Leading Corporate Clans uses the STELLAR MODEL® and the stories of the oldest people in the world, the first people of Australia, to describe what high performance in teams feels like. This book provides an insight into how to coach leaders and their teams to deliver high performance. #245 What I get up to in my CEO week

Someone once said that, as a business leader, you are a Managing Director when you’re actively involved with the day to day running of your business and a CEO when you are able to take a more hands-off approach. So, on the back of the success of my recent Diary of an MD recording, I thought I’d follow up with some commentary on what a typical CEO week looks like for me. In this episode, I discuss: The value of clearing the diary and dedicating time to work through your own professional goals and development, as well as that of your business Learning to put the brakes on when something isn’t going well – and truly accepting that it’s fine to let things go Why saying no to meetings is okay Why pausing on projects is also okay How taking stock, re-evaluating, seeking the perspectives of other people (and working through any lessons learned) will enhance your growth as an individual, and as an organisation When a CEO week can allow your teams the opportunity to step up and grow   Mentions in this episode: BoH episode #230 - Diary of a Managing Director BoH episode #236 – Knowing when to let things go with Jacob Haddad of Accurx The Hewitt Review Blog - What does this mean for primary care networks Work with me      I’m Tara Humphrey and I’m the founder of THC Primary Care, a leading healthcare consultancy. #244 Using Your Gob For Good with Peter McCleave

Back in February 2022 I had the absolute pleasure of speaking with Peter McCleave, founder of 10,000 Donors, a campaign to raise public awareness and promote sign up to the stem cell register. The more registered donors there are, the higher the likelihood is of a life-saving stem cell match being found for someone like Pete, who desperately needs it.    Having absolutely smashed the 10,000 target (the benchmark has now been set at 100,000!) I wanted to catch up with Pete, to find out how he’s been doing and to get the lowdown on Gob For Good. This is Pete’s newest initiative building on all the great work of 10,000 Donors to date and focused specifically on boosting the numbers of black and ethnic minority stem cell donors, to ensure there is equitable access to stem cell technology and in finding a possible match.      Pete and discussed:   ·         What’s been happening since we last spoke in 2022 ·         Publicity and promotion, including celebrity endorsements, NHS ConfedExpo, and zombies (!) ·         Living with blood cancer and how Pete has been feeling and coping, and also celebrating success ·         Newcastle University Centre for Cancer’s research, and establishment of a CAR T-cell therapy programme – why donations are so urgently needed So, once again, please take a small amount of time out of your day to listen to this episode, SHARE this podcast and check out the 10,000 Donors and Gob For Good websites, to help raise awareness and support Pete in his mission.    Connecting with Peter McCleave: Gob For Good 10,000 Donors website   Twitter  YouTube     Mentions in Podcast  Get the lowdown on Peter’s journey to date and that of 10,000 Donors in his previous Business of Healthcare podcast episode here We Delete Blood Cancer (DKMS) website African Caribbean Leukaemia trust (ACLT) website Newcastle University Centre for Cancer   Work with me      I’m Tara Humphrey and I’m the founder of THC Primary Care, a leading healthcare consultancy. #243 Everyone's voice matters with Jessica Smith

It's been a big few weeks in terms of new policy and material and the importance of great comms can never be underestimated. With this in mind, I was delighted when Jessica Smith, Co-Founder of SomX agreed to join me on the Business of Healthcare podcast to talk all things PR, marketing and communications. As a truly innovative agency dedicated to elevating their clients in the healthtech and biotech industries, SomX are a leading provider of unique and impactful brand experiences and delivery of carefully tailored and creative communications strategy; from startups, to enterprises, to established, market leading organisations. So, with this in mind, I was keen to quiz Jessica on all of the following (and more)! Where to start from when considering your comms plan? How do we guarantee that we always add value when it comes to producing content? Where does having a personal brand fit in? Long form content versus short term impact Male and female perspectives in the communications world Managing a varied client portfolio What's next for SomX?   Mentions in this episode: The Healthtech Pigeon podcast BoH podcast episode: Personalised Care and Social Prescribing with Dr Mohan Sekeram   Where to connect with Jessica: Jessica's LinkedIn profile SomX LinkedIn page   Work with me      I’m Tara Humphrey and I’m the founder of THC Primary Care, a leading healthcare consultancy. #242 Making the most of every opportunity with Laura Tomlin

This week's Business of Healthcare podcast episode is a leadership and management masterclass, delivered by Director of Ardens Manager, Laura Tomlin.   Ardens provide an end-to-end solution to primary care organisations which consists of two products: Ardens Clinical, a clinical decision support tool delivered to over 86% of GP Practices, and Ardens Manager, which provides dashboards for contracts such as QOF and the Network Contract DES to over 50% of GP Practices and Primary Care Networks. Ardens Manager is also due to launch their new Capacity and Access dashboard focused on improving and monitoring patient experience, access and appointment activity. Laura started at Ardens on a work experience placement and quickly progressed to executive level; all whilst overseeing the development of Ardens Manager from inception. Laura is truly an inspiration for aspiring young female leaders and entrepreneurs.  I wanted to understand more about how Laura has managed and coped with rapid career progression, what her day to day looks like and what structures (and support systems) she has in place to enable her to continue to smash her goals.  Here's what we discussed:  Practical leadership and management advice for those on a similar journey (or seeking to get to where Laura is now)  Laura's framework for managing feature requests and adapting the Ardens Manager product  Dealing with client feedback  What happens if / when things don't go as well as planned  Ardens Board meeting structure and how the wider teams feed in to their senior leads  Assessing the qualities of senior leadership team hires  What Laura has learnt from having professional coaching  Winding down after a typically busy day    Getting in touch:  Ardens main website   Ardens Manager website Laura's email  Laura's LinkedIn profile    I would recommend saving this one as it is definitely an episode that I will revisit again and again!    Work with me      I’m Tara Humphrey and I’m the founder of THC Primary Care, a leading healthcare consultancy. #241 Starting from a place of passion with Maddie Julian - Digibete

DigiBete is an NHS-approved, patient-centred, video platform and app which was set up to support and empower children, young people and families living with diabetes, in particular focusing on provision of resources and raising awareness of type 1 diabetes (which is typically less widely understood). From my own personal experience of having a daughter who received a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes five years ago, I can say that DigiBete has been a lifeline for her in having access to better understanding of her condition and allowing her to connect and grow with her peers within the DigiBete community. So you can imagine my delight in welcoming DigiBete CEO Maddie Julian to The Business of Healthcare podcast this week. Maddie and I share many similarities; not only as business leaders, but in our previous personal experiences of feeling unaware, overwhelmed and under-resourced in the management of our children's healthcare. I was keen to not only provide an opportunity to promote DigiBete but to also find out more about Maddie's own journey from teacher to nationally-approved entrepreneur! We cover: Identification of a gap in the market and starting from scratch Maintaining a clear mission and vision at all times Scaling the business The importance of mentorship and networking What drives Maddie and stops her from returning to her teaching career  The opportunities at play within the newly-created Integrated Neighbourhood Teams Why the four Ts are absolutely key in recognising the symptoms of diabetes; Tired, Toilet, Thirst and Thinner To find out more (and to tap into all of their amazing and freely-available resources), follow this link to the DigiBete website. I am delighted to welcome back North East London Local Pharmacy Community CEO, pharmacist and Business of Healthcare original podcast guest, Shilpa Shah!
