51: A Human Trafficking Survivor Tells All

Today’s show is riveting and, while it isn’t a healthy home hack, it’s a life hack. We discuss a highly sensitive, but highly important topic…human trafficking. Our guest, Tonya Stafford, endured a childhood riddled with trauma from sexual molestation, physical abuse, rape and ultimately being sold by her mother for drugs. Human trafficking is real and isn’t limited to the Hollywood elite. Human trafficking is a modern-day form of slavery involving the illegal trade of people for exploitation or commercial gain. Every year, millions of men, women, and children are trafficked in countries around the world, including the United States.  Victims are trafficked for sexual exploitation, forced labor, forced criminal activity, coerced into begging, forced marriages, organ removal, and other purposes. Globally, one in every three victims detected is a child. Girls are mainly trafficked for sexual exploitation, while men/boys are used for forced labor. Tonya is a survivor, activist, humanitarian, advocate, speaker, trainer, and author. She shares her harrowing journey and leaves our listeners with signs to look out for, and how her organization, It’s Going to Be Ok offers resources, support, and help to trafficked victims. This episode wraps Season 2 for the Healthy Home Hacks. Stay tuned for Season 3 in 2022.

49: How to Know if the Products You Use Are Safe

Have you ever wondered if the product you pick up at a store to slather on you or your child’s skin is safe? Today’s consumers must go far beyond reading a label. We now require trusted and reliable sources to keep us safe from marketing names and terms that sound or look and environmentally friendly, but maybe anything but. Our guest today, Amy Ziff, is the founder and Executive Director of Nontoxic Certified & the MADE SAFE® certification; America’s first comprehensive certification program that screens out known toxic ingredients in everything from baby and bedding to personal care products, cosmetics, and cleaners. 47: Why You Need a Holistic Dentist

Did you know there are over 6 billion bacteria, including 700 different species that reside inside our mouth or what scientists term the Human Oral Microbiome? While some bacteria are helpful, others are harmful and can lead to all types of oral health issues such as cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease. Our special guest today is a holistic dentist. Holistic dentistry doesn’t treat your dental health as separate from your physical health. Instead, it focuses on the impacts your whole health might have on your oral health. Unlike traditional dentists, holistic dentists don’t favor the use of fluoride treatments and are also opposed to using amalgam materials for dental implants which contain mercury. Instead, they use Composite fillings which are tooth-colored and don’t discolor the tooth, contain mercury, and are made from non-toxic material. Dr. Karaneh Jahan attended Oregon Health and Science University where she obtained her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree. She is a certified Holistic Health and Lifestyle coach. She runs Brio Dental, in Portland which provides holistic general and cosmetic dentistry serving the whole person—from self-care to oral care and beyond.
