Stay Off My Operating Table
Dr. Philip Ovadia
I was a morbidly obese heart surgeon. All through high school, college, med school and surgical training, I followed the U.S. dietary guidelines for both diet and exercise. Yet nothing I did kept the weight off. I just kept getting fatter and fatter. Each day in surgery, I would split open the chests of people just like me. I knew I was heading for the operating table myself if I didn't find solutions that worked. In 2016, I finally found a way to lose 100 pounds and keep it off. Now - in addition to doing heart surgery - I work to help people just like me get healthy, lose the weight and keep it off. I'm Dr. Philip Ovadia, the rebel M.D. and cardiac surgeon who is working to keep people off my operating table.http://ovadiahearthealth.com/whitepaper/Any use of this intellectual property for text and data mining or computational analysis including as training material for artificial intelligence systems is strictly prohibited without express written consent from Dr. Philip Ovadia.

The Ziglar Way to Better Health: Replace Bad Habits with Good Ones - Tom Ziglar #177
Tom Ziglar, CEO of Ziglar Inc. and son of legendary motivator Zig Ziglar, shares his personal health journey and the mindset principles that led to his success. After years of carrying extra weight, Tom made a simple commitment to 30 minutes of daily movement. While exercise alone didn't lead to weight loss, reading Dr. Ovadia's book helped him understand the missing piece - proper nutrition with adequate healthy fats. By applying the Ziglar performance formula of Attitude x Effort x Skill = Performance to his health journey, Tom lost 25 pounds and reduced his waist size from 47.5 to 39 inches. He emphasizes that lasting change requires feeding both the mind (through continuous learning) and the mitochondria (through proper nutrition). Tom's approach shows that sustainable health transformation comes from replacing bad habits with good ones while maintaining the right mindset through daily education and inspiration.NOTABLE QUOTE"What you feed your mind determines your appetite. Inflammation, Cell Health and the Hidden Dangers of Processed Oils - Brian Peskin #176
While fish oil supplements are widely promoted for brain health, the brain only needs 2-6mg of DHA per day, and the typical fish oil capsule provides 600mg - a massive 40-100x overdose that can deplete crucial antioxidants.EPISODE SUMMARYProfessor Brian Peskin, an MIT-trained engineer turned medical researcher, presents groundbreaking insights about essential fatty acids and cellular health. He explains that 25-33% of our cell membranes are made up of parent essential oils (PEOs) - primarily parent omega-6 and parent omega-3. When these essential building blocks are replaced with processed oils or excessive fish oil supplements, it impairs cellular oxygen absorption and energy production, leading to chronic inflammation. This cellular dysfunction underlies many modern diseases including heart disease, diabetes, and cognitive decline. Contrary to popular belief, properly sourced organic omega-6 oils are not inflammatory - rather, it's the processing of these oils that creates harmful compounds. Peskin details how getting the right balance of unprocessed parent omega-6 and omega-3 oils, while avoiding processed versions, can help reduce inflammation, improve blood pressure, and even reverse coronary calcium buildup. He emphasizes the importance of organic oils and supplements to counteract the ubiquitous processed oils in our food supply.NOTABLE QUOTE"87 percent of what clogs an artery is the adulterated omega-6, not saturated fat like we were told for 30 years... Saturated fat can't combine with anything. There's no binding space on it. It's saturated. There's nothing open. Fix Your Gut, Save Your Heart: New Science on Heart Disease Prevention - Dr. William Davis #175
The health of your gut microbiome, particularly the presence of beneficial bacteria and absence of harmful bacteria in the small intestine, plays a crucial role in heart disease prevention and treatment.KISMETRecent research shows that when beneficial gut bacteria produce oxytocin, it not only improves heart health but also helps reduce social isolation and increases empathy - suggesting that gut health could play a role in addressing societal division and mental health issues.EPISODE SUMMARYDr. William Davis, a former cardiologist, explains how traditional heart disease treatments focusing on cholesterol and statin drugs have failed to reduce cardiovascular events significantly. He presents compelling evidence that gut health, particularly the presence of harmful bacteria in the small intestine (SIBO), contributes to heart disease through a process called endotoxemia. The solution involves restoring beneficial bacteria, especially Lactobacillus reuteri and Lactobacillus gasseri, through fermented foods and supplements. These bacteria help prevent harmful bacteria from moving into the small intestine while producing beneficial compounds that support heart health. Additionally, Dr. Davis emphasizes the importance of key nutrients often missing in modern diets: vitamin D, magnesium, iodine, and omega-3 fatty acids. He shares how recent clinical trials demonstrate that high-dose omega-3 supplementation can actually reverse coronary plaque buildup. The interview challenges conventional medical wisdom and offers practical, natural solutions for preventing and reversing heart disease.NOTABLE QUOTE"American healthcare is not an evidence-based process. Medical Practice Transformation: The Path to Patient-Centered Care - Dr. Brian Lenzkes #174
While most assume leaving traditional practice means seeing fewer patients and making less money, Dr. Lenzkes revealed he was able to pay back all his loans in the first year of his new practice model - demonstrating that patient-centered care can be financially viable while improving doctor satisfaction and patient outcomes.EPISODE SUMMARYDr. Brian Lenzkes shares his journey from a traditional insurance-based medical practice to a direct primary care model, highlighting the fundamental problems in today's healthcare system. In his previous practice, he struggled to provide quality care while seeing 20-22 patients daily, dealing with endless paperwork, and fighting insurance companies. The breaking point came when he realized the system rewarded sicker patients rather than preventing illness. Now practicing direct primary care, he sees 6-10 patients daily, spending quality time with each one and focusing on metabolic health and prevention. The transition required courage and initially meant a pay cut, but resulted in better patient care, improved work-life balance, and professional satisfaction. Dr. Lenzkes explains how direct primary care reduces costs for patients while allowing doctors to practice medicine the way they envisioned. The conversation reveals how the traditional medical system contributes to physician burnout and high suicide rates, while alternative models like direct primary care offer hope for both doctors and patients.NOTABLE QUOTE"If someone gets diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and the doctor hasn't warned them at least 5 times, the doctor is committing malpractice.
