Restore: Mekdes Haddis on A Just Mission, Laying Down Power, Embracing Mutuality, White Evangelicals, and Being An Ethiopian-American at Liberty University

Become a patron of this podcast, and enjoy free merch. Join other patrons of this podcast at Patreon. **********Mekdes Haddis is a sought after Millennial African Missiologist and thought leader whose voice is challenging the Church to undo its “missions as usual” ethos. Her work is a clarion call to redefine missions from charity giving to disciple making and justice seeking. In 2020 Mekdes created an online community “Just Missions” with the purpose of helping missionaries, receivers of missionaries and ministry leaders engage with one another on an open platform and discuss the harmful effects of western missions. The group gives westerners the chance to hear from the receivers of missions without the financial power dynamic that typically robs them from openly discussing the truth. Her hope is that these conversations will lead to a wholesome method of supporting and equipping local churches and their leaders without the focus being on the one who is sent but rather the ones God wants them to reach.  Mekdes Haddis is the founder and executive coach of Just Missions, an online community that elevates diaspora voices and equips Western allies to become mutual partners for the work of the gospel. Originally from Ethiopia, she moved to the United States in 2003 and earned a BS in communications from Liberty University and a master's degree in organizational leadership from Columbia International University. She is also the project director of the Racial Justice and Reconciliation Collaborative for the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE).Haddis has worked in several churches, building discipleship and outreach strategies that are holistic in their approach to include people on the margins. She and her family live in South Carolina. Her book is: A Just Mission: Laying Down Power and Embracing Mutuality. The A World of Difference Podcast is brought to you in partnership with Missio Alliance.Join us to discuss this episode, previous episodes or for other thoughtful conversations at our Facebook group. Restore: Dr. Wade Mullen on Something's Not Right, Spiritual Abuse, Impression Management, and Decoding Language to Free Survivors From Dark Secrets Backstage Behind the Church Curtain

Become a patron of this podcast, and enjoy free merch. Join other patrons of this podcast at Patreon. **********Dr. Wade Mullen is the author of Something’s Not Right: Decoding the Hidden Tactics of Abuse – and Freeing Yourself From Its Power.Dr. Mullen is a world renowned expert on abuse in the church. He served ten years in pastoral ministry and then five years as a seminary M.Div. program director and assistant professor before transitioning to full-time research and writing, consulting, speaking, and advocacy. Wade earned a Ph.D. in Leadership Studies and completed a dissertation titled “Impression Management Strategies Used by Evangelical Organizations in the Wake of an Image-threatening Event.” You can get that dissertation for free here. He founded Pellucid Consulting in the Fall of 2021 to provide consulting and independent assessment services for institutions. He started a Substack Newsletter called Pellucid in the Fall of 2021 where I write about the ways in which deception is used to abuse and cover up abuse and how leaders and institutions can act with integrity and speak truthfully. The content is free, but there are also paid options for those who want to support my work. He speaks on occasion at events related to the subject of abuse and institutional response and participates as a guest on podcasts. You can listen to the podcasts here. He continues to engage in research efforts to better understand abuse within Christian cultures and institutions. I’m currently working on preparing a manuscript for a second book. He has also been serving when needed as an institutional response specialist with GRACE since 2020, assisting them primarily with institutional assessments. Wade's work in the local church first introduced him to the needs of abuse victims and the potential for institutional betrayal and trauma when those who are supposed to protect the victim(s) choose to protect the abuser(s). He also learned the challenge of advocating from within and how to confront the system when necessary. His personal story is told in a profile piece by Sojourner’s Magazine and in a talk he gave at the Restore conference in Chicago.Resources Dr. Mullen mentioned: Meeting the Ethical Challenges of Leadership by Craig E. Please take good care of yourself.Lori and Jason Adams-Brown share their story of spiritual abuse, emotional abuse and psychological abuse at Echo.church in San Jose, CA at the hands of Andy Wood and Filipe Santos. Their story is by no means the worst story of abuse behind the curtain of Echo.church, but it is one that is not covered by the many NDA's that Andy and Filipe had many staff sign over the years in order to control the narrative and image manage the abuse of particular staff over the years. Many former staff have shared their stories, but due to fear of going public and also the many NDA's, there is much fear. This is part six of their story. This is part five of their story.
