He is a Hindu background Christian who has dedicated his life to studying the Bible and training Christian leaders.Dr. Nijay Gupta was raised in a Southern Baptist denomination and experienced a male-centric view of the Bible. He realized that many of the stories about the women in the Bible had been hidden, and set out to make them known. After many years of research and writing, he released his book, "Tell Her Story," which explores the roles of women in the Bible, and their importance. He explains how the cultural and socioeconomic status of these women was incredibly important to understand their stories, and how they were able to lead, despite the patriarchal views of the time. She is a natural leader, and the apostles don't chide her for that. When we're not letting women use their Godgiven gifts in the church, we all miss out.[00:27:40]Southern Baptist Convention has kicked out Saddleback Church in California. Lori Penny: In many churches where it looks as though women can lead, but in reality they're not really leading. A lot of Justice Revival's work over the last six years has been creating innovative Christian education on human rights. It's such a rare space to see justice come together in the US.[00:06:05]This week marks International Women's Day. What do you believe are the most pressing issues facing women globally and in the US? Safety, provision and dignity are common themes. Although we often want to point fingers elsewhere, we certainly have much, much work to do here.[00:09:19]Faith for Era submitted tesTimmony at Senate hearing on Equal Rights Amendment. The measure would enshrine equality for women in the US constitution. Some opponents have argued it's unnecessary or could have unintended consequences.[00:15:42]Part of what the Era would do is raise the bar on sex discrimination. But there can still be other important considerations that are part of the analysis. It is so important to understand what it will and won't do and not fall prey to some of the narratives.[00:19:49]Christianity too often gets invoked to oppose human rights rather than uphold it. That fear of a more diverse, inclusive, egalitarian society has driven opposition to the era for the last 50 years. I'd love for you to help people understand how they can get involved in advocating for the Era.[00:23:06]The US is one of only seven countries worldwide that has so far failed to fully ratify and join the Women's Treaty. Most of the countries where your listeners are will already be part of CDA. And that's another key mechanism that's used to promote reform.[00:25:33]There is an American tendency or desire to think of ourselves as a world leader on human rights. I would like to see Americans thinking about how to do human rights here at home. Revival is deeper commitment to human rights and especially within the Christian community.[00:29:35]Justice Revival is working towards social justice. How specifically could individuals and communities support this work? Challenges include raising awareness about the work we do in the media. Third challenge is raising the support, the financial support, year after year.[00:32:11]I love how your perspective on theology and law has come together to help all of justice revival be born. What advice would you give to people who are interested in promoting gender equality and social justice?[00:37:31]Ali: On International Women's Day, I want to mention my mom, Suan, because she is the inspiration and really probably the reason I ended up doing this. I think there are many who have misunderstood the Samaritan woman for various reasons. I'm very excited about what we're going to discuss today.[00:02:11]Author's research has often been centered around issues of violence and family life and gender in the Bible. She says the women of the Bible preached about or researched or theologically understood through the lens of women has been lacking for a long time. For her, it's just a hobby.[00:05:07]What would you say we have gotten wrong about the Samaritan woman? Most sermons on her had all been preached by men. Once she started reading more like female theologians, she realized there was a different perspective. How do you walk through that?[00:14:46]The contrast in John's gospel between Nicodemus and the Samaritan woman challenges a lot of our stereotypes. It can be a lesson for us in the church to respect women in a way that Jesus does.[00:25:15]We have a couple of texts in the New Testament that do seem to silence women. But all the books are really contextual. They're written to particular people who are experiencing particular situations. What would you say to someone who says it's not okay for women to preach?[00:26:38]In the New Testament, we have a witness to women's significance, importance and contributions to the church. Maybe we shouldn't prioritize One Timothy chapter Two over this wide array of evidence. It's playing fast and loose with scripture when you don't take the time to look into something.[00:30:37]Some scholars have argued that what happened in the Church was connected to what was happening in Roman society more generally. Even though we have the primary voices of the time saying women should not have authority, women were still doing it. Reincorporating those women into our church history is also really important.[00:34:31]My New Testament intro classes are one of the classes that all students at Westmont College are expected to take. Using those as lenses to help read Scripture is really revolutionary for a lot of students. Getting the lenses to examine scripture and what it might have meant for its earliest audiences is a game changer.[00:36:15]Coming back to this issue of Women and the Bible. I gave the students a chapter from Kat Armis's Abuelita Theology. It sparked so much conversation among the students. I hope that it will open a whole new way of reading and understanding scripture.[00:38:43]Lori ADBR: In this Change series, we're embracing change. We don't need to be rooted in one country. Most TCKs love that our identity does not come from one place.[00:22:43]Research shows that TCKs have a break between a physical, mental or emotional break between age 27 and like, 45. Unresolved grief is the thing that causes TCKS the most pain over time. We've had to find ways to connect to our people.[00:26:36]We would just like to see more diversity of even Asian American actors. Why is it so often when you have an Asian in a role in a movie or a TV show, so much of it is very cliche and very stereotypical. It takes quite a while before it's truly mainstream.[00:32:09]How would you say that emotional intelligence is key for diversity and inclusion? People are starting to embrace going more deeply into diversity, inclusion and belonging. There's also social justice, I feel. Intelligence can help us take it to the next level.[00:38:52]One of the things you love about the Bay Area is a total of TCKs of all varieties. You are the first to get that.[00:48:12]The person who typically understands the concepts the best is the male, the white male who comes into my class. Versus the worst one is typically the minority US Population. We need to be champions like you and your husband are champions for those things. The pain is in the learning, and the learning is in a quiet moment.[00:54:20]The next year of Cultures is a year of Latin America. Who's the change maker in your life that you admire? Definitely my parents, my mom and my dad. And my father in death, actually, and as he fought cancer, he really inspired me.[00:56:26]Omi Osaka and Simone Biles have spoken out about mental health. Tell us a little bit about yourself andwho is Hannah Nation?[00:03:17]I consider myself a Pittsburgh native, although I wasn't born here. My parents were living in Illinois when Iwas born, and we didn't move here until I was ten. I currently live here with my husband Trey and our twokids. It's always so amazing to meet people who've lived in a lot of other places.[00:05:21]Kovac: What started your interest in China specifically? It was honestly kind of a fluke. Having lived in Asiafor 20 years, so many people end up being fascinated with China and the Chinese culture. FaithfulDisobedience has done a good job of helping us understand what is going on in China.[00:10:17]Faithful Disobedience is a collection of writings from a well known house church pastor named Wang Yi. A lotof what he has to say is very applicable for people all over the world. These are very human problems thatwe all have in common.[00:13:31]This is the first book like this from a Chinese house church writer. The voices of the Chinese house churcheshave been very hard to access. This is one of the first books like this where we've been able to translate andpublish writings from a very prominent pastor.[00:19:00]Wang Yi is a postcolonial theologian. He's always speaking to his own government. His ideas are veryChinese. The authorities that he's in conflict with are Chinese. What does this bring to the decolonizationconversation in Christianity?[00:23:34]He's very concerned about the global reality of the church. Much of what China's authorities feel concernedabout with regards to religious practice is affiliation with outside religious organizations. I really appreciate hisperspective on that. We do appreciate the prayers. Definitely the United States needs them.[00:26:45]Wang Yi believes that nationalism is always at its heart synchronistic. He says persecution is a time for us torepent of our own idols. There's so much we can learn from brothers and sisters around the world about howdo we act when persecution comes.[00:36:59]Hannah Nation serves as the Center for House Church Theology’s Managing Director. She is a graduate of Covenant College and received her Master of Arts in Church History from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.
