Resetting the World | Jefa Greenaway, Rebecca Huntley & Jessica Irvine at Antidote 2020

2020 was a chaotic and transformative year. Beginning with the catastrophic bushfires that incinerated any last doubts around the impacts of climate change, to international fury at structural and violent racism, and then on top of everything else, the devastation of a global pandemic that completely collapsed economies, relationships, and social norms.  But destruction and uncertainty present an opportunity to radically change the way we think, and this panel, called “Resetting the World”, was a discussion about what we want to rebuild from the wreckage. It’s hosted by journalist and broadcaster Tom Tilley.  Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Such a Fun Age | Kiley Reid at Antidote 2020

It's rare that a debut novel makes the sort of impact of Kiley Reid's book Such a Fun Age, which has quickly become a favourite of book clubs world wide, has been the subject of much talk and debate, and was longlisted for the Booker Prize. But it's also rare that a novel encapsulates the big themes of our times as perfectly as this one does.  In this session, Kiley is joined by journalist and television presenter Jan Fran for a discussion about privilege, class and race, in a world that is never black and white.  Thumbnail image by Daniel Boud Hosted on Acast. The End of America? | Jill Lepore at Antidote 2020

2020 will likely be viewed by future historians as a watershed in US history. The coronavirus crisis, the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement, and the deeply polarised Presidential election campaign have all laid bare inequalities and dysfunction in health, social security, and law enforcement systems. But with disruption and chaos comes space for renewal, reform, and change. How has a world-leader found itself in this desperate state, what is the historical and cultural background that we need to make sense of it all, and what is next for the USA? Historian, academic and New Yorker staff writer, Jill Lepore, joins New York Times Australian bureau chief Damien Cave for a discussion that attempts to anchor this cultural moment in historical context, explore deeper meanings of current events, and ask: does the fight for racial equality, eradication of police violence, and reform of unjust systems truly mean the end of America as we know it? This electric post-election session recorded at Antidote 2020 examines what might well be a new world order. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

No Men, No Meat, No Machines at All About Women 2020

In the 1970s, a group of women decamped to Amazon Acres in northern NSW, with a policy of no men, no meat, no machines. Far away from the male gaze, safe from assault and harassers, they created a separate space for women. They were part of a global trend where women around the world were creating their own, idealistic societies.  Join panelists Amber Jackson, Kerryn Higgs & Sophie Robinson and host Fenella Souter for a glimpse into a sequestered world and learn about the politics and vision that created it.  Hosted on Acast.
