207: Mistress Carrie: Now Unfiltered and Uncensored
Mistress Carrie spent 22 years on air and a handful more working in promotions at WAAF. She spent most of her life before that listening and loving the station. She figured one day it would all end with her "moving on" as many in the business do. But what she and many did not expect was for its parent company to sell the frequency to K-Love for ten million dollars; something that also happened to the Sound in Los Angeles. On February 20, WAAF ceased to exist, leaving Boston without the Active Rock station that gave birth to bands like Godsmack, and built hits like Shinedown's cover of Simple Man. (If you think we are making this up, the clip is in the podcast)In this episode, we cover Carrie's early days at the station and how WAAF went from being a Worcester station to a Boston mainstay. Some of it had to do with people migrating to the suburbs, but it doesn't hurt that the station built relationships with artists, sports figures and actors. We discussed the loss of the station and how it has left a hole in the heart of her and the WAAF listeners. (Subtle Boston music reference in there....)For now, you can find Mistress Carrie on her new podcast which you should subscribe to immediately. You can expect participation from many of the people who have her cell number like David Draiman from Disturbed, Godsmack, Shinedown, Cory Taylor from Slipknot, Adam Gonthier from Three Days Grace and many others.Fearless prediction: Her podcast is on Simplecast which was just purchased from Pandora/Sirius XM - there's room for her up there, isn't there? There's more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteMatt Fogarty VoiceoversJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxThe NLogic Services Division,See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

206: Heather Osgood: Podcast Advertising 101
Heather Osgood is the founder of True Native Media and answered all of our questions about podcast advertising. I first met Heather back in 2017 and was fascinated with the vision she had for her company. While the idea of media buying was not new, being a media buyer for podcasts was. It is believed that podcast advertising will hit a billion dollars by 2021, and I took interest in the methods used to connect podcasters with podcast ads. A few weeks later, I shifted this podcast to a new podcast host and began to experience the benefits of dynamic ad insertion; namely the ability to increase our ad inventory. In this episode, Heather explains how mid-level podcasters can access ad dollars for their show. (Yes it starts with having an IAB certified host). But more importantly, Heather explains what dynamic ad insertion is, who needs it and what exactly is the IAB and what IAB certified or compliant metrics are. We also discuss the difference between what is a useful stat (Downloads) and what is a vanity stat. (Apple Podcast Rankings) It may be that your podcast is ready to be monetized with podcast ads and Heather debunks the whole process.I mentioned that Heather is a great follow on LinkedIn - please follow her here and her company here. Also if you are looking to monetize your podcast - you don't necessarily need podcast ads to do it - schedule a call with me and I'll point you in the right direction. We also have more information and links to a few handy tools including a list of IAB Certified hosts.

Jillene Khan is the afternoon host on Magic 98 in Madison, Wisconsin. Her story to radio is rooted in Minneapolis. Jillene is an ideal guest to bring on at a time when many people in her hometown are struggling with death of George Floyd at the hands 4 Minneapolis police officers. In the episode, you'll hear about Jillene's rise through the radio ranks as she goes Country in the Quad Cities and Milwaukee, and then the decision to move to Madison, WI. She also spoke about coming out to her listeners how accepting her friends were. And by friends, we mean radio listeners. 204: Carrie Doll: On Air and in The Chair
I met Carrie Doll in the late 90's at CFRN Television in Edmonton. She was a reporter and later a news anchor. She covered the events of 9/11 from the anchor desk in Calgary and learned how to report without a script. The youngest of ten children from Fairview, Alberta, Carrie was a natural when it came to communicating and public speaking. She had an incredible run on CFRN-TV in the anchor chair alongside Daryl McIntyre. We spoke about "the Chair" in the physical and metaphorical sense. With so many great broadcasters having occupied the chair previously, Carrie knew that sitting in it required great responsibility. In this episode we re-connected for the first time in 18 years and took a small walk down broadcasters row in Edmonton. We spoke about the people who sat before her on CFRN-TV (Daphne Kuhn, Leslie Miller, Shawna Randolph) and others who graced the Edmonton airwaves who have gone on to larger markets. (Todd Battis, Tara Nelson, Darren Dutchyshen, Catherine MacDonald, Brian Mudryk, Graham Richardson, Ian Leonard, and so many more)Today, Carrie hosts a weekly podcast called the Inner Circle which you should connect to here. Carrie is also a public speaking coach and was kind enough to share some of her expertise on the show. There is also some bonus material from this episode on the show page including Carrie's farewell from CFRN here. 203: Kim Blair: Finally A Guest From New Zealand
I met Kim Blair back in 2013. He was looking to make a change in his radio career and was leaving Australia behind in search of a more a country that was going to offer more of a challenge for him. Consolidation has caught up with Australia and Canada as well. In the months after we had dinner together, he found his new home in Auckland, New Zealand, where the radio is as competitive as any radio market names New York or Los Angeles.Kim grew up in Perth, Australia and started his radio career there. North Americans who have no grasp of Australia, don't understand the sheer size if the country. Firstly, there are those who call it an island... it is not. However, New Zealand is an island. I have never really considered how remote Perth is from other cities like Sydney and Brisbane. The driving and distance is the same between Toronto and Vancouver. We also discussed some of intricacies of radio in Australia, and how it varies differently with the radio in New Zealand. He also mentioned that New Zealand is a country that continually punches over his weight when it comes to performance. (See Below) Kim is also the first person from New Zealand to be in the podcast, and the third with an Australian accent after Ronnie Stanton and Matt Sutton. You can connect to Kim's Voiceover website if you need an Australian voice for your roster. There's more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteMatt Fogarty VoiceoversJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxNLogicSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

202: Evo Terra's Podcast Pontifications
Evo Terra is the host of Podcast Pontifications. A short form podcast providing insights into the future of podcasting. As luck would have it, news of the Joe Rogan signing to Spotify broke the day before recording of the episode. I met Evo in Orlando at Podcast Movement last August and he shared some of his tips and tricks with me regarding how to refine solo podcast presentation. There were also some things I didn't know about Evo, including that his son was a hockey goalie. That's only surprising to me because Canadians can be snobs and believe that no one plays hockey in Arizona or California in Florida unless they are employed by one of the local NHL teams. Although I do know that Matthew Tkachuk was born there; a given in that his dad was relocated to Phoenix when the Winnipeg Jets moved to the desert in 1995.In this episode we discuss how Evo went from filling in on KFYI in Phoenix, to Satellite radio and then to podcast. We discussed a few of his books including Podcasting for Dummies and The Beer Diet. (Which is what you think it is) I ask about the importance of metrics, should you release your podcast in seasons, and the departure of Joe Rogan to Spotify and why podcasters freak out whenever change is afoot. There's more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteMatt Fogarty VoiceoversJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxNLogic.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

201: Jason Barrett: Sports Radio Managing the Crisis
Jason Barrett returns to answer my sports related questions. Normally I don't bring Jason on until this first week of September when we look forward to the new NFL football season and talk about Sports broadcasting. However, these are not normal times for Sports radio and now is a good time to unpack what's going to happen. Jason's company, Barrett Sports Media has unveiled two initiatives to help us through, including a podcast called "Managing the Crisis" and his Membership Directory which connects you to sports radio programmers and executives. The podcast is powered by Promosuite and Nlogic's Services division and Matt Fogerty Voiceovers.I believe I mentioned that Jason's sports media updates by email were awesome - Here is the link to Subscribe to them. There's more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteMatt Fogarty VoiceoversJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxNlogic's Services divisionSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

200: Dana Marshall: Morning Radio, Prince and a Podcast
Dana Marshall loves radio, loves the music of Prince, and has found the perfect audio life balance with both. He does mornings and is program director at 103.3 WKFR in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He is currently seeking a co-host for that morning show, so if you think that is you - apply within. Much like Melz On the Mic, who was a guest on the podcast in June 2018, Dana knows local, social and vital. Our meeting at the Conclave in 2018 led to a discussion about podcast which then led to the creation of the My Prince Story Podcast. The show is now in its second season and is the 4th most downloaded amongst the 14 we work with. Dana and I also get into the weeds about what ails radio, but also why we get excited about it too. He also challenged me to think about how we would have handled a pandemic in 1995 without solid internet.I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I loved recording it! 199: Sheryl Worsley: KSL Radio, Hit Podcasts, and Post-Pandemic Broadcasting
This week, Sheryl Worsley from KSL Radio in Salt Lake City. While being a news director for around 20 years, she shifted in 2015 to audio and audience development in the Bonneville cluster's digital space. Sheryl and her team saw the value in podcast when a news series they were putting together was better suited for podcast than radio. Thus the hit podcast COLD— a true crime series covering the case of Susan Powell, was picked up by podcast powerhouse Wondery and soared up the podcast chart rankings. The podcast series covers every aspect of the case, every detail, every piece of evidence. In this episode, we spoke about the nature of working on a hit podcast like COLD, the early plans, the numbers, and what's next. Also, COVID-19’s impact on listenership on both podcast and radio. Finally, we wondered what the radio workplace is going to look like post-pandemic.Sheryl also tipped shared that KSL is working on some new podcasts - keep this page bookmarked to see their latest. Two podcasts of note that the station produces that are thriving in this COVID-19 era include Corona Virus Q&A andAnd hey Canada - This podcast is one we love. Because. Hockey. 198: A Mass Shooting During A Pandemic
This episode is a little different. Over the weekend, a 22 people lost their lives in a mass murder spree that covered 100 kilometers in Nova Scotia. Monday morning, Q104 in Halifax and a number of Stingray radio stations came together to pivot programming towards the hearts of their listeners. To understand what it takes to make those changes, you need to understand the people affected. Nova Scotia has had more than its fair share of disasters in the last century, and radio has been there to weather every storm and see its listeners through. This is what radio does best.In this episode, I shelve my original plan of talking about the 1,000,000th podcast to go into Apple Podcasts and react to the great radio I listened to on Monday on Q104 in Halifax, and 89.3 K-Rock in Kentville. We explore how connected Maritimers are to one another, using myself as an example having lived there for 5 years. There are about 2 degrees of separation in every relationship - or at least it feels that way. We also speak with Q104 program director Trevor Wallworth spoke to me about how he and senior management at Stingray, Steve Parsons and Steve Jones formulated a plan to get the Maritimers healing. Also Darrin Harvey who appeared on this podcast episode recently, shared parts of his show from Monday too.
