Sheryl Sandberg says "Lean in!" Book Insight on Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg

Lean In continues the conversation that Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg started back in 2010 with her unmissable TED talk.  She encourages women to make their voices heard, to lean in and “sit at the table”, take risks and strive to reach their potential.  No organization can be truly effective, Sandberg argues, if it does not purposefully try to represent all of society.  You end up with a one-dimensional workplace that is not fit to create products and services that cater to 100 percent of the population.  We need change, and in order to make that happen, we need more women in positions of power.  Tapping into her own personal experience as well as hard facts and research, and offering practical advice alongside inspiring anecdotes and examples, Sandberg crafts a compelling, empowering manifesto for the modern working woman. *Theme 1: A Woman's Place - 3:22 *Theme 2: Likability: Heidi vs. Howard - 10:50 *Theme 3: The Children Factor - 16:55 Like what you hear? Turning Purpose Into Payoff: Book Insight on Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

*Napoleon Hill wrote Think and Grow Rich as America was still clawing itself out of the Great Depression, when most citizens were focused on avoiding poverty rather than getting rich.  *The promise of the book’s title stood out though, and made people wonder just what was possible.  *It contained not simply Hill’s own ideas, but the distilled secrets of hundreds of America’s most successful figures, gathered over 25 years of research.  *Hill’s mission was simply to know “how the wealthy become that way.”  *He found that behind every monumental achievement lies a burning desire. Think and Grow Rich is about how to turn this intangible craving into wealth and success. *Theme 1: The Purpose of Desire 6:10 *Theme 2: Definiteness of Purpose and Infinite Intelligence 14:58 *Theme 3: Napoleon Hill's Secret 25:49 Like what you hear? Can thoughts heal you? Book Insight on The Power of Your Subconscious Mind by Joseph Murphy

Your thoughts shape your beliefs. Your beliefs shape your actions. Your actions shape your reality. This is the basics of The Law of Attraction, and similarly physician and author Joseph Murphy believed that mental visualizations and affirmations begin to change us and affect the world around us. Whatever you fixate on, you will attract more of the same into your life. Through a refusal to dwell on negative thoughts, and a daily practice of noticing and focusing on the positive, you can steer your ship to the life of your dreams. He advises “Live in the state of your realized desire.” How will it feel when you achieve your goal? Will you be ecstatic, relieved, grateful? Whatever the emotion is, you must experience it now in order to set the miracle working powers of your subconscious in motion. Thought is action, and the events that occur in your life are a reaction. Therefore, if you can impress upon your mind the idea of health, for example, then your brain will have little choice, no matter how ill you might be, but to galvanize all its forces to heal you. What small changes make the biggest impact? Book Insight on The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy

* Success is simple: it involves hard work and habits that compounds our value over time.  *In this global bestseller, entrepreneur and success coach Darren Hardy shows that it’s the small, incremental changes that – when made consistently – will make a difference in your life.  *With consistent effort, the compound effect will naturally take hold, allowing you to reach the success that you’ve always dreamed of. But there are no magic bullets.  *Hardy’s book is a welcome alternative to faddish ideas like “the 4-hour work week,” and an antidote to notions that you can “change your life in 30 days.”  *The truth is, Hardy says, no-one has ever achieved great success without putting in a ton of work. But after a certain point, momentum kicks in. When it does, you’ll be astonished by what you can achieve. Are you a David or a Goliath? Book Insight on David & Goliath by Malcolm Gladwell

Gladwell revisits the ancient tale of the underdog to break down history’s secrets.  David’s small size, lack of armor, and sling shot are really advantages, and Goliath’s immense size and power only work against him.  Gladwell revisits a dozen or so stories, ranging from Biblical battles to the London Blitz, to redefine how we look at history’s underdogs and industry giants.  The ‘little guys’ are often considered weak due to their outlier status or their disadvantageous upbringing. But these same individuals are history’s revolutionaries, medical forerunners, civil rights warriors, and powerful Hollywood producers.  Likewise, history’s Goliaths – Nazi Germany, white American south, and millionaire parents to name a few – lose ground despite their seemingly incredible size and power.  David and Goliath is is an eye-opening book for anyone who thinks their underdog status works against them – and a stern warning to all Goliaths. *Theme 1: In the Valley of Elah Revisited - 3:23 *Theme 2: David the Dyslexic - 12:48 *Theme 3: Remote Misses - 23:03 Like what you hear? Behave by Robert M. Sapolsky

Human action has multiple layers of causation. Our behavior is complicated.  It can’t be explained by biology and genes alone – as evolutionary biologists tend to do. And it can’t be explained by environment alone, as a sociologist might.  How we act and think depends on a subtle interplay between ancient urges and fears, social and cultural influences, and reasoning.  Sometimes, as Sapolsky explains in comprehensive detail, this can lead to the very worst actions in history – the blights of humanity – but he also offers hope.  As much as we are bound by aggressive behavior that is deeply wired into us, we can be equally influenced towards do-good, prosocial behaviors that maximize benefit for all, not only friends and family, but people that we don’t know and even people that we’ve never met.  Sapolsky’s key question is, how can we capitalize on these capacities, rather than those that lead towards aggression, hate and violence? 2:41 Part One: Causes of Behavior 10:20 Part Two: Genetics and Environment 19:00 Part Three: Free Will and Peace HEAR THE FULL INTERVIEWS MENTIONED IN TODAY'S EPISODE HERE: "The Daily Show | Robert Sapolsky - How Science Influences Culture And Politics In 'Behave' - EXTENDED INTERVIEW" http://www.cc.com/video-clips/49ky74/the-daily-show-with-trevor-noah-robert-sapolsky---how-science-influences-culture-and-politics-in--behave----extended-interview "TedTalk | The biology of our best and worst selves" https://www.ted.com/talks/robert_sapolsky_the_biology_of_our_best_and_worst_selves/transcript#t-463655 THANK YOU FOR LISTENING TO BOOK INSIGHTS.
