DocWorking: The Whole Physician Podcast.
Doctors devote their lives to caring for others, but the time has come to prioritize the health and wellness of physicians.
As physicians, we make decisions every day about how to prioritize our time, energy, focus, attention, and money. Our lives are in our own hands. But are we making these as conscious choices or are we satisfied with speeding through life in default mode?
Hosts Jen Barna MD, Coach Gabriella Dennery MD and Master Certified Coach Jill Farmer interview physicians to explore ways to embrace life AND a medical career, some who’ve chosen a path less traveled and others who have optimized their lives on a traditional medical career path. As coaches from the DocWorking team, Gabriella and Jill discuss actionable tips from their experience coaching physicians. We also invite guests on business, leadership, building financial independence, and other pertinent topics to physicians.
If you’re a physician, we want to hear your story! Please email Jen Barna at podcast@docworking.com to be considered.

180: The Paradigm Shift To Cure Chronic Pain for You and Your Patients with Dr. Howard Schubiner
“But if you step back and you’re the parent, what do you want to teach that kid? You want to teach the kid that it’s ok to fall. So, when the kid falls, you smile and say ‘Oops! That was fun, you’re ok buddy! Let’s do it again!’ Right? And that’s what you’re doing to your brain. Because your brain is looking to you; your brain is giving you pain and you’re either freaking out or you’re going ‘Oops that’s silly! I’m ok!”
- Dr. Howard Schubiner, Internist and Pediatrician, Director of the Mind Body Medicine Center at Ascension Providence Hospital in Southfield, Michigan
Dr. Jen Barna discusses recent breakthroughs in curing chronic pain with esteemed guest, Dr. Howard Schubiner. Dr. Schubiner and colleagues developed Pain Reprocessing Therapy and Emotional Awareness and Expression Therapy, chronic pain treatments that focus around curing pain rather than managing pain. Dr. Howard Schubiner offers listeners his key insights as to what he has learned is the best way to confront pain that may be stopping you or your patients from living freely. In today’s episode, Dr. Schubiner discusses neuroplasticity and the effective process in which you can ultimately retrain your brain to move away from pain, rather than continue to be stuck in a negative feedback loop. As physicians, it is often your job to find the source of you or your patients’ pain. Being able to offer solutions to patients in chronic pain can be life-changing for patients and can be very fulfilling to clinicians. Dr. Barna and Dr. Schubiner also discuss the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral based therapy and other practices that have proven to help manage pain, to cope with pain, but not to cure it. The paradigm shift that is now occurring is to recognize that research has demonstrated with randomized, controlled trials that chronic pain, even pain that has lasted for decades, can be alleviated in a short amount of time with lasting results using Pain Reprocessing Therapy and Emotional Awareness and Expression Therapy.

179: Pros and Cons of a Physician Career in Rural Practice with Mary Wolf
“Feeling like they can’t do enough for their patients, or that they’re falling short with their patients, (that) they’re disappointing their patients. And as you know, physicians can be very perfectionistic, want to fix things, and I often work with them on what are realistic expectations when you are in a rural setting.”
-Mary Wolf, MS, LPC-MH, BCC
Master Certified Coach Mary Wolf, president of Veritee Partners LLC, talks with cohost of the podcast Master Certified Coach Jill Farmer about the benefits and drawbacks of practicing medicine in rural settings. Oftentimes with fewer resources in smaller communities, there can be significant physician burnout in rural areas especially since the onset of COVID-19. How might physicians struggle to set boundaries in these communities where they often know their patients personally outside of the work office setting? Mary Wolf is able to offer valuable advice for physicians on how to set these boundaries between work and home so that they can practice medicine in a sustainable way.

177: When Physicians Benefit by Being Less Intense
“Everyone just kind of accepts it like, ‘Yeah, I’m that way too. I can’t relax on the weekends, I can’t wind down. I can’t let it go.’ There’s a cultural bravado behind that. I want to call bull on that.“ - Jill Farmer, Master Certified Coach & Lead Coach at DocWorking

175: The Physician Brain, Neuroplasticity & New Horizons with Dr. Joseph Maroon
“One day I was doing awake brain surgery on patients with tumors in eloquent parts of their brain and the next week I literally was working in a truck stop, bequeathed to my mother, heavily mortgaged in Wheeling, West Virginia in the dead of winter. I was filling up 18-wheelers, flipping hamburgers, and wondering, how in the world did this happen to me?”
-Dr. Joseph Maroon, Clinical Professor and Vice Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh
In this week’s episode, Dr. Jen Barna speaks with Clinical Professor and Vice Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Joseph Maroon. Along with being the team neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dr. Joseph Maroon is also highly recognized as a co-developer of the ImPACT neurocognitive test, the only FDA approved test for concussion assessment and now the standard of care in most amateur and professional sports organizations.
During the podcast, Dr. Maroon shares his personal journey with stress burnout and clinical depression. He notes that his recovery was mainly dependent on natural physical activity that worked to re-stimulate the relationship between the body and the brain. As discussed in his book Square One- A Simple Guide to a Balanced Life, Dr. Maroon talks about how physicians can create a balanced life of work, family, spirituality, and physicality. Dr. Barna and Dr. Maroon also discuss the topic of physician vulnerability and how physicians may feel challenged to hide any signs of personal health struggles. This week’s episode provides a meaningful conversation to confront this mindset.
Dr. Joseph Maroon is Clinical Professor and Vice Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery and the Heindl Scholar in Neuroscience at the University of Pittsburgh Medical center, Pittsburgh, PA. Along with being the Senior Vice President of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine, he has also published over 290 peer reviewed papers, 56 book chapters, and 6 books. In 1990, Dr. co-developed the ImPACT neurocognitive test which is the only FDA approved test for concussion assessment and is the standard of care in most amateur and professional sports organizations. He was the first neurosurgeon directly appointed to the NFL, serving as the team neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers for 35 years. In 2017, his book on overcoming adversity and “burnout”, Square One- A Simple Guide to a Balanced Life, was favorably reviewed by Dr. Sanjay Gupta and others. In his personal life, he has completed 8 ironman distance triathlons and in 2021 he placed first in his age group in the St. Petersburg Olympic distance triathlon. An inductee to the Lou Holtz Hall of Fame, he was selected as the 2019 “Man of the Year” by the Jerome Bettis Foundation and in 2020 was honored with the Physician of Courage Award by UPMC.
