190: Physician Entrepreneurship and the Path to Success with Dr. Jeffrey Hausfeld

“For physicians that are feeling frustrated, I would say to them, ‘Sit back. Take a breath. See really what you want and if the path of going to start a new company is what you want, then give it your full attention. And if you see you can’t give it your full attention, hook up with someone that will help you.’ Because physicians feel, ‘It’s my idea, I want to own 100% of this company.’ And my answer to them is, ‘100% of nothing is still nothing.’” -Dr. Jeffrey Hausfeld MD, MBA (BioFactura)   How do you take an idea from scratch on a napkin to full fledged booming business? As experts in the practice, physicians and other clinicians can be key contributors to breakthroughs in the healthcare field. Today, DocWorking welcomes Dr. Jeffrey Hausfeld to the podcast, now Chairman and Founder of the Society of Physician Entrepreneurs. With cohost Dr. Jen Barna, today’s conversation focuses on how physicians can bring a business idea to fruition. In this discussion, the accomplished Dr. Hausfeld offers listeners his advice toward identifying an idea that will help people to becoming an entrepreneur, the necessary steps to start designing your product, and how to earn respect as a physician and a business operator. During their talk, both physicians reflect on their personal experiences that emphasized the importance of support networks, whether that’s through other experts in the fields, furthering your education, or learning when to take a step back. Listen to discover the benefits of working with others and establishing a network around you in order to bring your next vision from clinical idea to successful startup.    Jeffrey Hausfeld, M.D., M.B.A., F.A.C.S,  has served on the national board and committees of specialty medical societies since beginning his practice in Otolaryngology/Facial Plastic Surgery in 1982. He is an Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery at George Washington University School of Health Sciences and an alumnus of the Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Hausfeld is widely published in the medical literature, is the pioneer of innovative laser surgery techniques, is the author of a lay oriented medical book, and has appeared on numerous local and national television and radio shows as a medical expert. He has also served as a health care consultant, spokesperson, and executive coach for multi-national pharmaceutical companies, health care firms, as well as the U.S. military. Dr. Hausfeld stepped down from his clinical duties after receiving a Masters in Business Administration from Johns Hopkins University. He continued to refine his communication and team building talents by completing a graduate program in Leadership Coaching and Organizational Development at George Washington University.   Dr. Hausfeld led the field in otolaryngology/facial plastic surgery for many years and is now a business operator and entrepreneur. He invests, manages and consults to a variety of healthcare businesses, including assisted living facilities for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients, medical device companies, healthcare information technology and biotech firms, as well as syndicating and raising capital for health care related real estate ventures, including other life science entrepreneurial enterprises, both regionally and nationally. He is the Chairman and Founder of the Society of Physician Entrepreneurs (www.sopenet.org), a global network focused on educating healthcare and life science professionals in Bioentrepreneurship and Innovation. Dr. Hausfeld orchestrated the oversubscribed Series A-C Financing of BioFactura and acted as the lead investor in the A round. He serves as Chairman of the Board of BioFactura as well as their Chief Medical Officer as the company develops its Biodefense and Biosimilar platform and embarks on a Series D Financing Round.   Dr Hausfeld invites healthcare professionals to use financial information and the “science of business” as valuable tools to nurture medical innovation at their institutions and private practice, as well as to enhance the ability to promote quality patient care and improve decision-making. Dr. Hausfeld will demonstrate that power, pleasure and improved performance can result from the ability to mesh the cultures of medicine and business in a comprehensive and strategic manner. “The exciting thing about life after the practice of medicine is that now I am able to draw upon the diversified fields of medicine, business, and organizational psychology, and implement novel solutions that have an immediate impact on the organization's bottom line.”

189: How Intentions Can Impact Financial Independence for Physicians with Dr. Cobin Soelberg

“Does this align with the things that we as a family value? Does this give us the choices that we want in five or ten years? I think back to this trip that my family just took. Having a newborn at 45 is life changing. It’s life changing at any point, but I want to spend all the time that I can with Wes while he’s young. And if that means I need to work less and earn less, I’m willing to do it. And thankfully we’re at a point in our careers and in our financial lives where that’s a choice we can make, where my most important priority, which is time with family, is something that we can actually do.” -Dr. Cobin Soelberg, M.D., J.D., Owner of Greeley Wealth Management   How can physicians achieve financial independence and financial freedom in a way that identifies with purpose and value in their life? For Dr. Cobin Soelberg, that purpose is family. Through today’s conversation with DocWorking CEO and cohost of the podcast, Dr. Jen Barna, Dr. Soelberg brings his expertise as a physician and owner of Greeley Wealth Management. Dr. Soelberg helps physicians to climb out of debt and find financial independence and stability by first defining their own values and intentions. In today’s episode, Dr. Barna and Dr. Soelberg recognize and empathize with the common expectations for doctors to make extravagant financial purchases once they financially “can.” Dr. Barna and Dr. Soelberg talk about the distinction between making major purchases based on what other people value versus exploring one’s own values, and how taking the time to clarify what you truly value, and your intentions, can be a game changer that can set you up for reaching your long term financial goals. Listen to today’s podcast to learn how you can change your mindset towards your finances, and most importantly, how you can build the life you truly want.    Book referenced in this podcast episode: Wanting: The Power of Mimetic Desire in Every Day Life by Luke Burgis- https://www.amazon.com/Wanting-Power-Mimetic-Desire-Everyday/dp/1250262488   You may also enjoy this previous episode of DocWorking: The Whole Physician Podcast featuring Dr. Cobin Soelberg: 139:  “Financial Independence for Doctors with Dr. Cobin Soelberg”- https://docworking.com/2022/01/24/139-financial-independence-for-doctors-with-dr-cobin-soelberg/ Cobin Soelberg, M.D., J.D. is the Treasurer of his private practice anesthesia group located in Bend, OR.  Cobin is also a Certified Financial Planner candidate and owner of Greeley Wealth Management, a financial planning firm run by a physician for physicians.   As a practicing anesthesiologist with legal and financial training, Cobin has a unique expertise and understanding of his colleagues' clinical pressures and the financial worries that keep them awake at night.  Cobin helps his colleagues destroy their student loan debt, protect their income and assets and create a retirement plan that would make you jealous!   Stop by Greeley Wealth - www.greeleywealth.com –  today to learn how to start making your money work for you.  You can also email Cobin at cobin@greeleywealth.com   Medical School – University of Utah School of Medicine Law School – University of Pennsylvania School of Law Anesthesia Residency – Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania       Find full transcripts of DocWorking: The Whole Physician Podcast episodes on the DocWorking Blog  The past few weeks have been busy at DocWorking! 181: Leading the Way for More Black Doctors and the Importance of Mentorship with Dr. Russell Ledet MD PHD MBA

“What if I were to have someone who looked like me, worried about my mental health when I was a child? How much better of a human would I be now? How many of those internal doubts that I had would be eliminated? And I wanted to be one of those people who really drove the conversation and utilized every ounce of my influence to really create something that can revolutionize what’s accessible in terms of mental health.” - Dr. Russell Ledet MD PHD MBA   On December 14, 2019, 15 African American medical students from Tulane University School of Medicine posed in front of a former slave cabin at the Whitney Plantation in Edgard, Louisiana, while donning their white coats. “We are truly our ancestors’ wildest dreams,” said a tweet of one of the photos. The image went viral and multiple national news outlets picked up the story.   The students formed The 15 White Coats organization,  a nonprofit group with a threefold mission: To reimagine cultural imagery in learning spaces, lessen the financial burden of medical school for applicants of color, and influence cultural literacy in learning spaces. Donations and the sale of photographs and posters allow The 15 White Coats to distribute their photos to classrooms across the U.S., establish scholarships, and more.   Master Certified Coach Jill Farmer welcomes Dr. Russell Ledet, MD, PhD, MBA to talk about the barriers and doubts he faced as a black man and aspiring physician along his journey from security guard to MD PhD MBA. Specifically, Dr. Ledet shines light on the disadvantages that medical school applicants from marginalized communities face. In recognition of how important it is to have role models, Dr. Ledet encourages listeners to take action. He is receiving national recognition for starting 15 White Coats. Dr. Ledet talks about his journey from being in the military to becoming a security guard to realizing that he could go to college, and eventually to medical school after earning his PhD at NYU. He is a native of Lake Charles, Louisiana.    Dr. Ledet earned his bachelors degree from Southern University and Agricultural and Mechanical College at Baton Rouge. He earned his PhD in Molecular Oncology from NYU School of Medicine, Sackler Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences. He earned his MD and MBA from Tulane University.
