This passion led him to a position at one of the largest online tennis retailers in the world, Tennis Express, as a content writer and playtester. Sam was also certified as a Master Racquet Technician in 2011. He was a 4 year member of The Southwestern University Men’s Tennis Team (2001-2005), and served as a team captain during his junior and senior seasons. Sam achieved All-SCAC (southern collegiate athletic conference) status his senior year, and then began a 10+ year coaching career.On Episode 277 of the show, we talked about the top 8 racquets that Sam and I picked for me to playtest. On today’s episode, I spoke with Dr. Larry Lauer, a mental skills specialist for USTA Player Development, about how to become a more resilient competitor.Dr. Lauer earned a PhD in science, exercise, and sports psychology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He was previously the Director of Coaching Education and Development at the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports (ISYS) at Michigan State University. Dr. Lauer also was an assistant coach and mental coach for Michigan State Men’s Tennis, helping the team reach the 2013 NCAA tournament. [From the archive: This episode was originally recorded and published in 2020]On today’s episode, I spoke with former ATP Top 10 singles and doubles player and Grand Slam Champion, Spanish pro Emilio Sanchez, about how to develop a more aggressive tennis game.Emilio achieved career high rankings of #7 in the world in singles in 1990 and #1 in doubles in 1989. He won 3 Grand Slam Doubles titles (two French Opens and one US Open) and a silver medal in the 1988 Olympic games in men’s doubles. During his tennis career, he won 15 singles titles and 50 doubles and made over $5 million in prize money. Emilio has both played for and captained Spain’s Davis Cup Team to a championship title in 2008. TFP 288: Dr. Mark Kovacs—Strength and Conditioning for Tennis Players: From the 2016 Archive

[From the archive: This episode was originally recorded and published in 2016]In today’s episode, I spoke with world renowned sports science and fitness expert Dr. Mark Kovacs about strength and conditioning for tennis. Mark has trained numerous top professional tennis players, including John Isner, Sloane Stephens, Sam Querrey, Donald Young, and Melanie Oudin. Stack named Mark one of the Top 31 Fitness Professionals to Follow in 2015.Mark is a performance physiologist, researcher, professor, author, speaker and coach with an extensive background training and researching elite athletes. He has been featured in many of the biggest sports and news publications, including ESPN, the New York Times, and Tennis Magazine. Mark was also a top college player at Auburn and achieved a world ranking on the ATP Tour.To sum it up, Mark has one heck of a resume, and it is an honor to speak with him on the show today.Mark co-authored an amazing book and resource, Complete Conditioning for Tennis (2nd edition), which was published a couple months ago. I have a copy of his book and have had a hard time putting it down in my spare time. The value in this book is unparalleled in comparison to any other tennis fitness book I’ve seen on the market so far.In this episode, I ask Mark questions on how we can improve our tennis fitness to become better tennis players.
