We couldn’t choose just one holiday movie to queen out on this year, so we chose three–an old favorite of ours, this year’s Popular Mainstream Gay Holiday Movie and a camp classic that is destined to be a future tradition. We’re starting with 2000’s “A Diva’s Christmas Carol,” featuring more than one alum of the Drag Race judges panel, a particularly thicc Bob Crachett and a bonkers final act. Then we move on to “Single All the Way,” with a questionable central love story saved by Jennifer Coolidge at her Christopher Guest best as Aunt Sandy. We wrap things up with 1988’s “Christmas at Pee-wee’s Playhouse,” featuring the absurdly subversive Paul Reubens and guest stars ranging from Joan Rivers, Grace Jones, Charo, Oprah, Magic Johnson, CHER, and more. Merry merry, Mary’s! RuPaul and Company are queening out for Christmas on VH1 in a campy, kooky and occasionally filthy send-up of Hallmark holiday movies. Ru iconically appears alone in front of a green screen for most of her screen time, but acts her holiday heart out. There’s a cavalcade of Drag Race alum, from first outs Jaymes Mansfield and Victoria Porkchop Parker in lead supporting roles to both Latrice and Mayhem in separate bus related cameos. Brooke Lynn Hytes does her best Russian Canadian, Ginger finds the Sharon Gless, Peppermint drives a taxi and then there’s Jan, who’s great, of course, because we love Jan. We spend quite a bit of time on a Justin Hartley related rabbit hole, sort of discuss the hubbub around the Season 14 Meet the Queens (but we’ll probably save that for Patreon), eventually find a connection to 1985’s “Summer Rental” and even work an “A League of Their Own” moment of appreciation into the conversation. The power of $100,000 and the title of Dragula compels the Top 5 to bring their acting chops to the main stage for the black box theater version of a horror movie challenge. Saint extinguishes her smoker’s voice and hops into Zavaleta’s iconic sweatshirt to play Mom 1, Dahli keeps Mom 2 on brand in white face paint, Siggy wrings the weird out of her four lines, Zavaleta gives us both Father and Sister, and Hoso possesses the coveted second win for the season as the demonic daughter. By some miracle, Saint ascends to safety this week, and Miss Z packs up her arts & crafts and leaves this haunted pre-school better than she found it. Things get pretty hairy on stage this week, but a lot less scary in the boudoir as the Top 6 settles into a friendly monster energy for hopefully the remainder of the competition. Things are getting goulishly glamorous for this week’s haunted high seas floor show, but the monsters are making even bigger waves in the Cauldron in one of the series’ most chaotic conflicts. Dahli is the only one smooth sailing through this week while Jade finds a key and loses a seat mate in Betty, Saint’s biscuits aren’t rising and neither is she in this competition, Sigourney’s experience with glamour proves to be a double edged sword and Zava zeroes in on a new opponent.  Meanwhile, Hoso is questioning the definition of Glamour, the Boulets are stuck in their helmets, Fangoria is just kind of there and the goose of the season gets washed out to sea. The perennial Monsters of Rock challenge usually leads to more than a few broken guitar strings by the end of the floor show. This season was no exception, though to be fair, things fell apart for Glam Rot long before they got on stage, and the real show was the encore in the Cauldron between Sigourney, Merrie, Jade, and Betty when she could get a word in edgewise. Meanwhile, Dahli finally nabs the win they came here for and leads Zenith to a clear and drama-free victory. Our audio went a bit south for this week’s trip to out west, so apologies all around, but it’s a monster mashup of genres this week as the wild west meets outer space at its spookiest.
