The queens are creating supersized trailers for satirical versions of a season of Drag Race that’s only just begun. And it’s one of the best challenges we’ve seen in a while. But how much of that is thanks to an “UNHhhh” level of editing? Who cares, we get Willow Pill desperately seeking Jeffrey Bowyer Chapman, DeJa Skye as both a Social Justice Corner queen and a cow, Bosco doing bashful brain surgery and Kornbread rolling off a table. This week we’re back to 14 queens, and just in time for not just one but two balls! With three categories each, that’s 42 looks on the runway. But frankly, most of the highlights for us this week were in the workroom. The only thing better than one big opening is of course two big openings! We do have much to say about Maddy this week, from Ru’s interactions with her to the chords she didn’t quite strike in talent show. Season 14 kicks off with a split premiere featuring seven new queens, Best Supporting Lizzo, a talent show and a surprising number of quotes just waiting to be driven into the ground. (By either RuPaul or us.) While it’s taking the Jambalaya a bit to heat up, Kornbread comes in hot, sweet and gif-able from the get-go. Alyssa Hunter looks like quite a Chase but her air guitar doesn’t strike a chord, Bosco petals burlesque on the runway and great commentator energy in the talking heads, Kerrie jumps rope but could easily jump networks, Orion calls Ru on her hamburger phone but the connection is cut short and Willow Pill inspires an unfortunate amount of baby talk. We’re kicking off what’s shaping up to be the draggiest year on television with Season 14 of RuPaul’s Drag Race! The competition premieres on January 7th, but this week we’re catching up on the newest batch of queens to enter both the workroom and the pop culture landscape of this show. We couldn’t choose just one holiday movie to queen out on this year, so we chose three–an old favorite of ours, this year’s Popular Mainstream Gay Holiday Movie and a camp classic that is destined to be a future tradition. We’re starting with 2000’s “A Diva’s Christmas Carol,” featuring more than one alum of the Drag Race judges panel, a particularly thicc Bob Crachett and a bonkers final act. Then we move on to “Single All the Way,” with a questionable central love story saved by Jennifer Coolidge at her Christopher Guest best as Aunt Sandy. We wrap things up with 1988’s “Christmas at Pee-wee’s Playhouse,” featuring the absurdly subversive Paul Reubens and guest stars ranging from Joan Rivers, Grace Jones, Charo, Oprah, Magic Johnson, CHER, and more. Merry merry, Mary’s! RuPaul and Company are queening out for Christmas on VH1 in a campy, kooky and occasionally filthy send-up of Hallmark holiday movies. Ru iconically appears alone in front of a green screen for most of her screen time, but acts her holiday heart out. There’s a cavalcade of Drag Race alum, from first outs Jaymes Mansfield and Victoria Porkchop Parker in lead supporting roles to both Latrice and Mayhem in separate bus related cameos. Brooke Lynn Hytes does her best Russian Canadian, Ginger finds the Sharon Gless, Peppermint drives a taxi and then there’s Jan, who’s great, of course, because we love Jan. We spend quite a bit of time on a Justin Hartley related rabbit hole, sort of discuss the hubbub around the Season 14 Meet the Queens (but we’ll probably save that for Patreon), eventually find a connection to 1985’s “Summer Rental” and even work an “A League of Their Own” moment of appreciation into the conversation.
