What Is biomechanics? Applying Biomechanics To Real Life And Better Performance

Andrew provides a great overview of what biomechanics is. Biomechanics is a subdiscipline of kinesiology and one of the key tools to analyze human movement. It entails studying how the body moves using physics and mechanical engineering strategies. Biomechanics answers questions that help to prevent injuries, rehab injuries, train better, and improve performance. In this episode, Andrew explains key terms in biomechanics such as kinematics and kinetics to analyze human movement. He also goes over the differences between qualitative and quantitative analyses. Both methods synthesize information and apply it to solve problems dealing with human movement. Biomechanics involves critical thinking and an understanding of anatomy to apply concepts to real life. Many kinesiology and sports medicine professionals utilize biomechanics. Everyone from PE teachers, coaches, strength coaches, athletic trainers, physical therapists, physicians, and even athletes. Although technology has come a long way, it is still unable to research and measure all the intricacies and details of human movement. Despite that, the take home message is that biomechanics is all around us. From learning techniques in sport and exercise, ergonomic advancements, to exercise tracking devices. It helps clinicians to improve patient care, rehabilitation, strength and conditioning, sports equipment, etc. Biomechanics helps us to understand and explain why and how we move in life and sports. Matching Recovery Strategies To Your Training Demands For Better Progress & Performance

Recovery is a big topic, but how do you effectively apply recovery strategies to match your training demands? Everyone doesn’t respond the same to training stimuli because of individual differences, and therefore we don’t recover the same following physical activities. The basic aspects of effective recovery are adequate sleep, stress management, nutrition, hydration, and getting rid of inflammation and waste products following exercise. However, more importantly, Andrew discusses how to be more aware of how to appropriately fit in recovery strategies based on how you are responding to your training regimen.Andrew discusses paying attention to factors that influence how we recover from workouts. This includes our level of strength & conditioning, movement patterns, mobility issues, nutrition/hydration status, skill/experience level, weather acclimation, or just how worn down our body is from previous training sessions. Assess and evaluate those aspects to better gauge what you need to effectively recover as the weeks go on. The take home message from this episode is to make your recovery practices match your training and lifestyle. If they don’t match, then make the necessary adjustments to help make the progress you desire. Happy recovery and enjoy the episode! Got Injured? Restoring Optimal Performance Requires More Than Tissue Healing Time

Andrew discusses a very important topic, and often a misconception, for many athletes in rehabilitation. Tissue healing following injuries is important, but just because you allow adequate time for tissues to heal, that does not guarantee that you will be performing at the same level you once were. The fact of the matter is, tissue healing is one of the many factors that must be considered when rehabilitating your injury. Don’t forget about all the other factors that need to be addressed during the tissue healing process.Addressing factors such as strength, power, neuromuscular control, sensory feedback, confidence, etc. are very important to regain optimal performance. It is crucial to provide a conducive environment for healing to occur while at the same time we are gradually progressing to restore functional levels to return to sports and activities. The take home message here is that tissue healing time is not the only factor to return to play. Commonly if these other factors of rehabilitation, strength & conditioning, and progressing back to sports is neglected, the timeline to return at a competitive level becomes longer and longer. Don’t expect to return in the estimated timeframe and perform optimally if you are not addressing many other factors of performance with a professional who can help. Enjoy and share this episode with anyone who will benefit from listening to this. Aloha!Did you enjoy this episode? Please subscribe and leave a review on:AppleSpotifyGooglePandoraiHeartRadio
