Are You Warming Up Effectively? Components And Considerations To Improve Performance
This episode is all about how to implement an effective warmup strategies to help you better prepare for your training sessions and activities that you are jumping into. This is a great general overview of key components that are included in effective components. The components Andrew mentions are (1) increasing circulation/metabolism, (2) progressing mechanics and movements, (3) warming up the nervous system, and (4) prepping your mental state as well. Collectively, all these areas will help you to better transition from a rested state into your sports or activities.Andrew also discusses how the focus of warmups can be very different from person to person. Understand what you need to prepare your body and implement the appropriate intensity, components, and practices that will do so. These warmup practices will make a difference to maximize how you perform and make progress over time. Also, keep in mind that you want your warmups to be efficient too. This is meant to complement your sports and activities well, not to replace your sports and activities. As a rule of thumb, if you are doing more intense physical activities or more precision types of skills, you will probably spend a little more time warming up. If you are recovering from injuries or working on movement dysfunctions, that may also require more lengthy warmups. Basically, listen to your body and practice what works best for you to perform at your best. Apply these concepts to your warmups and enjoy the episode! Rotator Cuff 101: Understanding Optimal Shoulder Health
Do you have rotator cuff problems? Are you looking to prevent shoulder injuries in overhead sports? Listen in to this episode where Andrew breaks down key concepts for optimal shoulder health. This episode is all about the rotator cuff: anatomy, function, and key training considerations to elevate your shoulder performance. This episode is a must to understand the importance of the rotator cuff. The rotator cuff is made up of 4 muscles, the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis. Collectively the muscles provide dynamic stability by creating a compressive force of the glenohumeral joint. It also controls the subtle, but crucial movements between the bones of the shoulder joint (i.e. arthrokinematics between the humerus and glenoid fossa). Strengthening your rotator cuff goes well beyond low intensity, isolated rotator cuff exercises. Your rotator cuff needs to adequately stabilize your shoulders during high force, high velocity, and sports specific movements. Andrew also discusses the importance that posture and scapular stability plays in rotator cuff function. Bottom line is to make sure that you are properly training and maintaining your shoulder health for your activities.
