Before The ENCORE #14 | Philip Magee
Welcome back listener! It's colder and darker this month for sure but I'm happy to say that this interview brought me a lot of warmth, and hopefully it does so for you as well. This month is a very special episode for me. I was fortunate enough to be able to sit down with the wonderful Philip Magee for this episode; a phenomenally prolific music producer and mix engineer but also a mentor and friend. Phil's discography speaks for itself, having produced & engineered for world-renowned international acts such as Kodaline & The Script, Miles Kane, Sisqo & Delta Goodrem, and having his foot firmly rooted at the beating heart of Irish music working with The Academic in the early stages of their career, as well as Gavin James, Westlife, The Coronas, True Tides, The Blizzards, and many, many, many more. When I first came up with the concept for this podcast, Phil was the first name I thought about and the reason being that I feel I truly wouldn't be doing what I'm doing today without him, his influence and his guidance. As well as hearing all about Phil's work ethic, his recording improvisation with dictaphones and VHS tapes, you'll also hear about my start and how I ended up moving away from a life as a band member towards becoming the producer and mix engineer I am today. Thanks as always and if you do love what we do here, kindly share it with a friend or consider signing up to our Patreon here for bonus content.Back in November - stay warm, everyone!-Sonic Architect Adam Hosted on Acast. Before the ENCORE #13 | Richard Dowling
*Return of The Mack by Mark Morrison plays intensely*Sonic Architect Adam here, in your feeds on a FRIDAY of all days! Why, I hear you ask? Well, unfortunately due to circumstances outside of all at NO ENCORE HQ's control, Dave and Craig have been unable to record this week. All is ok, don't worry, but in their place this week I've moved up my return to Before The ENCORE by a couple of days. Things will be back to normal next week, all going well! This episode spans borders. Well, county borders that is.For this month's recording, I got in my car and travelled to Limerick City, The 061 itself, to visit mastering engineer Richard Dowling. Richard's work spans decades and his client base is worldwide. His discography boasts some genuinely iconic songs, of which you will definitely know many. Don't believe me? See for yourself here.We sat down in his studio to discuss the whens, wheres, whys and everything else of what is still broadly considered a mysterious but entirely essential part of the music creation process. If you'd like to learn more about Richard, you can find all the info you need and more on wavmastering.com.Chat next month!-Sonic Architect Adam Hosted on Acast. Every little bit helps! ACT ONE (10:22): Closing the loop on the Arcade Fire situation as the guys ponder morality, individual responsibility and hypocrisy; debating the merits, emotions and hard truths that come with Foo Fighters' extravagant tribute to the late Taylor Hawkins; zeroing in on Harry Styles and SPITGATE; and a nicely scattershot Electric Picnic report – it's a busy week in news!ACT TWO (54:47): They say it changes when the sun goes down. 338: TOP 5 SONGS THAT ASK QUESTIONS
Sure, the quiz extravaganza was last week but the big questions keep coming! A return to our regularly scheduled running order, as Dave brings Craig back down to earth following his heroics against Nialler9. Thanks for contributing/listening/just being you.ACT ONE (6:38): With Arcade Fire opening their tour across town as we record, we attempt to make sense of the recent Win Butler revelations. As ever, that only scratches the surface of the news.ACT TWO (52:18): Keeping things quizzical, it’s our Top 5 Songs That Ask Questions! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
