#88: Debunking the myth of progress (ft. Rodrigo Aguilera)

"Despite the doom and gloom of financial crises, global terrorism, climate collapse, and the rise of the far-right, a number of leading intellectuals (Steven Pinker, Hans Rosling, Johan Norberg, and Matt Ridley, among others) have been arguing in recent years that the world is getting better and better. Extreme poverty is nearly eradicated, violence is at historic lows, and only mass pessimism keeps us from realizing how good we have it in the twenty-first century." Psychotherapist Harriet Fraad and Substance Abuse Councillor Ikoi Hiroe talk with Rodrigo Aguilera, economist and author of 'The Glass Half-Empty', a book which debunks arguments given by the “New Optimists” and exposes their 'progress' narrative as being little more than a very conservative defence of the status quo. #82: Academia & Exploitation

Ruthless competition, sexual harassment, crushing student debt, parental pressure, loneliness & working class exclusion ... the pursuit of knowledge meets the reality of a Neo-liberal education in the 21st century. We spoke to four different people about their experiences in the academic world, their expectations and the problems they faced. Despite the opening paragraph above, it's not all bad. From the joys of teaching (and being taught), to using academic respectability to gain access to government funds for social causes, this episode explores their experiences navigating the rigid hierarchies of our education and social/political system. #81: Addiction and Recovery (ft. Carl Erik Fisher)

Substance abuse councilor Ikoi Hiroe talks to Carl Erik Fisher, addiction psychiatrist and author of 'The Urge: Our history of addiction'. Carl draws on his own experience as a clinician, researcher, and alcoholic in recovery to trace the history of addiction that’s troubled us for centuries. His book shows us how addiction has come to be deeply misunderstood and stigmatized in our times, despite being profoundly ordinary across recorded history, and how an honest reckoning with our past successes and failures with addiction can light a better way forward. #80: Being working class in a middle class world (ft. Cynthia Cruz)

Cynthia Cruz, author of 'The Melancholia of Class: A Manifesto for the Working Class' joins Psychotherapist Harriet Fraad and Substance Abuse Councillor Ikoi Hiroe to discuss the 'invisibility' of class, the cost of assimilation into the middle class, eating disorders, substance abuse and many other issues. 'To be working-class in a middle-class world is to be a ghost. Excluded, marginalised, and subjected to violence, the working class is also deemed by those in power to not exist. We are left with a choice between assimilation into middle-class values and culture, leaving our working-class origins behind, or total annihilation. In The Melancholia of Class, Cynthia Cruz analyses how this choice between assimilation or annihilation has played out in the lives of working-class musicians, artists, writers, and filmmakers — including Amy Winehouse, Ian Curtis, Jason Molina, Barbara Loden, and many more — and the resultant Freudian melancholia that ensues when the working-class subject leaves their origins to “become someone,” only to find that they lose themselves in the process.'
