Melissa A. Fabello: Misconceptions About Feminism and Eating Disorder Recovery
Episode 47: Melissa A. Fabello is a sexuality educator, body image and eating disorder activist, and media literacy vlogger based out of Philadelphia, PA. She is a Managing Editor of Everyday Feminism and a PhD student in Human Sexuality Studies, where her research interest is in the effectiveness of current sexuality-focused psychoeducational interventions in eating disorder recovery programs. Why am I so ridiculously excited to release this episode? Most of all because Melissa is an incredibly smart woman. She researches. She experiences. She's open-minded, but at the same time, she firmly stands for what she believes in. There are certain people I interview that I want on the show simply because they are awesome, but the conversation doesn't flow as well because they don't have mind-blowing things to say. That is not the case for this episode. I had a ton of questions to ask her that came from my own heart- things I've been dying to understand. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I do! Here's what we talk about: How Melissa became interested in feminism and sexuality in the first place The definition of feminism Can you be a feminist but also "traditional" when it comes to dating? Misconceptions about feminism in the media How the "bra burning" event isn't true, and what actually happened Breaking down the argument about having a female president such as Mrs. Clinton Why boys stop crying when they reach school-age, while girls continue to express themselves safely Genderization of kids before birth Okay, let's talk about Disney for a sec The actual problem with beauty pageants (no it's not the participant's fault) How Melissa adopted an eating disorder after a breakup Eating disorder management vs. recovery The importance of walking away when you feel triggered Here's where you can connect with Melissa: Website Twitter Tumblr Facebook YouTube Subscribe to the podcast on YouTube: maddymoon.com/youtubepodcast Is it about time you learn how to eliminate your own triggers and start your recovery journey with a group of other like-minded women? How to Stop Shaming Your Food Choices
Episode 46: First of all, I want to say a big thank you to everyone that read and resonated with my post How Cellulite Saved My Life. All the kind comments and shares mean the world to me. If you haven't read it yet, I would love for you to check it out HERE. And then, if you like it, please challenge yourself to share it with somebody that may need to know just how common cellulite is! The more we share, the more we care. Today I'm talking about a combination of a few things, but the main gist of this episode is how to stop shaming your food choices and start focusing on your motivations. I know it's tough to turn off your shame-o-meter when you're first beginning your food freedom journey, but in this episode, I go over my personal thoughts on this subject and how you can cultivate a judgment-free mindset for you and others. Here's what else I talk about in this episode: Katie Dalebout from The Wellness Wonderland Radio How Cellulite Saved My Life The importance of vulnerability and honesty on your road to self-discovery The difference between dieting and a diet (getting rid of labels) How a year ago I used diets to get out of my comfort zone There are no good or bad foods, but also no good/bad actions- it's all based on motivation and perception The two kinds of "healthy" groups and how we should stop shaming each other (there are obviously many other types, but these are two common ones) When I caught myself shaming my own food choices and what I did about it Food choice consequences How YOU can find your "happy weight" by just eating what you want Speaking of shaming…. Jia Jiang: 100 days of Rejection Therapy
Episode 45: Jia Jiang came to the United States with the dream of being the next Bill Gates. But despite early success in the corporate world, his first attempt to pursue his entrepreneurial dream ended in rejection. Jia was crushed, and spiraled into a period of deep self doubt. But he realized that his fear of rejection was a bigger obstacle than any single rejection would ever be, and he needed to find a way to cope with being told no without letting it destroy him. Thus was born his "100 days of rejection" experiment, during which he willfully sought rejection on a daily basis--from requesting a lesson in sales from a car salesman (no) to asking a flight attendant if he could make an announcement on the loud speaker (yes) to his famous request to get Krispy Kreme doughnuts in the shape of Olympic rings (yes, with a viral video to prove it). Jia learned that even the most preposterous wish may be granted if you ask in the right way, and shares the secret of successful asking, how to pick targets, and how to tell when an initial no can be converted into something positive. But more important, he learned techniques for steeling himself against rejection and ways to develop his own confidence--a plan that can't be derailed by a single setback. Filled with great stories and valuable insight, Rejection Proof is a fun and thoughtful examination of how to overcome fear and dare to live more boldly. Here's what we discuss in today's episode: How Jia wasn't raised to face rejection in his childhood My biggest fear today How and why Jia started "100 Days of Rejection" Rejection Therapy Jia's very first rejection (and how he reacted to it) His most impactful rejection assignment (watch here) The most painful interview in the English dictionary How the fear of rejection is linked to disordered eating The lack of control we have over other people's reactions and opinions Jia's most terrifying rejection assignment The best starting point for getting rejected if you want to try rejection therapy How rejection therapy helps you with your responses to others as well (No is just as important as yes!) The best way to learn what kind of person you are Training kids to handle rejection Jia's new book Rejection Proof and his "Rejection Gym" course Want to link up with Jia? George Bryant: Finding Power In Eating Disorders, Body Dysmorphia and Loss
Episode 43 *Spoiler alert- this is my favourite episode ever. Period.* George Bryant is the man behind the wildly popular Paleo food blog “Civilized Caveman Cooking Creations” as well as New York Times Best-Selling author of The Paleo Kitchen. After spending the first 20-something years of his life in a constant battle with his weight, and then nearly losing both his legs while on deployment as a US Marine, George took matters into his own hands and began his own Paleo journey. What started as a simple place to post recipes for friends has since turned into an award-winning food blog. After being in the Marines for 12 years, George has since been medically separated and is enjoying working full time creating delicious Paleo recipes, while hoping to change as many lives for the better by making REAL food recipes simple and tasty. What's unique about George is not only that he overcame a serious injury with his legs, but that he suffered from body dysmorphia and an eating disorder. George is brave in so many ways. His courage and strength never fails to impress me and I can confidently say we can all learn so much from him. Here's what we talk about in today's episode: Why George is so open about his experiences with body dysmorphia and eating disorders His powerful "minute of truth" practice George's legs blowing up, being shot at, his concussions and seeing dead bodies- and how he still sheds tears over it all from a place of love No matter who you are or where you go, there will be opposition How people project their own insecurities onto others and how to approach it The root of so many body image and eating disorders Being present to societal pressures How George's fiance has made personal development possible for him Power comes from acknowledgment There never needs to be a logical explanation for feeling what you feel Tapping Not feeling like your story is worthy What you resist, persists. The number one thing George's friends did for him that allowed him to come out about his eating disorder George's favourite recipe from his cookbook Connect with George: Website Facebook Twitter Get his cookbook >> The Paleo Kitchen Sign up for the upcoming Ditching Metabolic Damage Webinar with Matt Stone and Maddy Moon!
