There’s No Rising Without Discomfort: Growth Edges & How You Can Navigate Them

2020 is definitely THE year of growth edges for most of us - myself included. In general, I do find that in conversations with you all, I meet you at a crossroads of fear and rising, of retreating and growth. In my experience, we cannot rise without discomfort. We cannot find empowerment and true happiness without constantly pushing ourselves and feeling into the excitement of new things instead of living the way we have always known.

So, in this episode, I explore what it means to sit in discomfort and navigate growth edges. We can experience many different types of growth (spiritual/work-related/relational/etc.) but in the end, we experience growth because we’re human living on planet earth, where nothing is ever stagnant and change is the only constant! So how do we approach these growth edges? How do we hold ourselves in the process of discomfort?

I also talk about my personal growth edges of this year so far, including my experiences in and of Bali, my new-found entrepreneurship and my redefinition of ‘home’. I hope it serves as inspiration and support for you and the growth edges you find yourself in at the moment! ~ This episode is sponsored by the Rising Woman Remedy. Order it here!

F#ck Finding Your Purpose & Embrace Intentional Living

There’s a lot to do around ‘finding your purpose’, especially in the spiritual self-development world. I believe it stems from the desire for a more connected, fulfilling life and to break out of the restricting and stagnant systems of society. And I have felt this (and feel this still) too! However, I think it’s time to debunk the myth that this is something you need to seek outside of yourself. What if our purpose is already living within us, ready to be uncovered? What if our purpose in life is to raise our consciousness by choosing things that excite and expand us, over and over again? What if there’s nothing tangible to make of that but it’s simply a way of living you need to adopt?

In this episode, I explore the idea of finding your purpose and how I think there’s a lot of pressure that comes with that phrase. I also talk about how intentional living is its counterpart. The idea of finding your purpose or calling is capitalised by the industries that profit off of selling the idea that there’s something missing or broken in your life or personality. Intentional or slow living, to me, shows me that following the breadcrumbs of excitement and finding stillness and awareness in this process is the true calling of humankind. Lean into the trust that everything is unfolding as it should - this will give the space for your soul’s calling to come through, from within. Trust truly is the most empowering thing you can give yourself. ~ This episode is sponsored by the Rising Woman Remedy. Order it here!

Calling In A Spiritual Money Mindset

I am so excited to talk about one of my favourite topics ever - MONEY! Why do we hate it? Why do we shame it? And how can we call in a HEALTHY relationship with money which includes spirituality too?

In this episode, I tell you all I have learned so far about abundance, scarcity and our relationship with money in relation to that. When we see money as an energy flow, we also need to acknowledge that it needs to move and that we will always attract it and give it out.
This to me was the first step in changing my view on money. The second was to get critical on my limiting beliefs: do I actually think I am worthy of receiving money and spending it too? Can I make money living my dreams? Is it abundantly available around me, FOR me?

What truly helps is creating mantras enforcing your gratitude for it and reflect on how money has worked for you in the past and what it can do for you in the future.

These are just a few of the tips and tools I share with you in this episode. Please let me know what my words and views brought up for you. I believe that only by healing our relationship with money we can fully empower ourselves. This too is the work that needs to be done in order to break through patriarchy and other systems of oppression that hold us back on our journey. So feel into that abundant energy around you and take steps to a healthy relationship with the good ol’ dollar bill! You are worthy of it all.

Practicing Radical Empathy in the Anti-Racist Discourse & the Importance of Intersectionality ~ w/ Sadia Masud

Important note: Sadia and I decided to push back our recording for a few weeks when the conversation around Black Lives Matter started to gain momentum - to not just give space to black voices, but also to pause and reflect on our own place within the discussion. In this way, we believe we were able to come onto this podcast recording with a better understanding of the current discourse.
 -
I met my incredibly inspiring friend Sadia Masud 6 years ago, in Canada, in a Race & Ethnicity class at the University of Alberta where we both studied back then (I was there for a semester!). Sadia has always inspired me in terms of sisterhood, female strength, compassion and so much more. Since forever we’ve been wanting to record a podcast together to speak about her activism, writing talents and personal experiences of life and I am so incredibly happy to present you this episode.

We talk about the meaning of identity and how for the BIPOC community specifically, identity is often seen as something in relation to someone else’s (e.g. you’re ‘not’ white), instead as an individual. We talk about the importance of awareness of privilege - of course, it is relative, but the majority of us carry some type of privilege with us. Sadia calls to seek discomfort in this work and states that, ‘you can’t be a good activist if you seek to just liberate yourself’. YES! I couldn’t agree more.

It calls in the idea of Radical Empathy, which calls on the resilience of the BIPOC community and our interconnected communities as well as the urgent need for awareness and action. On this podcast in general, we talk about liberation in terms of womanhood. I truly believe that all systems of oppression are rooted in patriarchy (be it white supremacy and thus racism, sexism, capitalism, etc.). However, it is also extremely important to be aware of the intersections that take place for all of us. My experience as a white, heterosexual, able-bodied woman with a university degree is very different than Sadia’s, who identifies as Muslim,Canadian with South-Asian and Middle-Eastern descend and, with wearing her hijab, being part of the visible minority community. And of course, there are countless examples like these. Sadia mentions the Combahee River Collective as one of her inspirations to become aware of intersectionality. I speak about the White Feminism lecture by Rachel Cargle which speaks about white privilege in the feminist movement.
Sadia’s book will celebrate the resilience in and diversity of minority communities. It aims to give BIPOC a voice. Read Sadia’s essay ‘Taken Over by the West’ which inspired her to work on this book. Sadia also recommends ‘Sick Woman Theory’ by Johanna Hedva to dive deeper into the concept of Radical Empathy.

I know this is only the start for this podcast of more inclusive, reflective conversations around these topics. I hope this episode instigates you to think about your role in this conversation and about ways to commit to activism. As Sadia mentions, ‘activism isn’t just about outward change but also about creating inward change’. The two need to co-exist to practice active activism and create actual change, not just for yourself but for others as well. Practicing self-care should be an important part of this as well. In the end, I believe we are all connected, so change needs to happen in order to raise the collective vibration. We need to seek the discomfort to make it comfortable for every single one of us.

Sadia - I know you read this ;) - thank you for being such a bright, shining light in my life. I admire your strength, your compassion, your beliefs and your activism. Meeting you six years ago was a blessing back then and it is grown to be an even bigger blessing in the years following our time at Alberta University. I can’t wait to see your next year and celebrate your wedding with you.

And for everyone else - please let me know what you thought of this episode. What triggered it in you, what resonated, what did it enlighten for you? Food Freedom & Healing Your Body Image ~ w/ Eden Thaler

Eden Thaler is a Food Freedom coach - guiding people in their relationship to food, body image and self love. For her, healing her food issues was the start of her personal development and spiritual journey.

I knew that at some point I wanted to talk about these topics but I didn’t want to approach it on my own, especially because these topics can be so triggering and personal, which is why I’m so happy I got to have this insightful and empowering conversation with Eden.

In this episode, we talk about what food freedom means and how our relationship to food can be so all-consuming. We discuss our inherent worth as human beings and women and the generational trauma that we carry around. Eden talk about how meditation and other tools has helped her heal and I feel into how such tools bring us back to our most true self. We also talk about femininity and womanhood and how our body image is key to connecting to ourselves.

Going within and lifting the shame - it’s only one of the many nuggets of wisdom that Eden shares with us in this episode.
I’m aware this topic can be triggering for some (or many) of us. I hope you feel held in this conversation, and never hesitate to reach out to Eden or myself about this if it did strike a chord with you. Taking Care of Yourself Amidst Global Crises

In this very spontaneous and un-edited episode, I talk about taking care of yourself and your mental health amidst these heavy, strange times. Not only are we in the middle of a pandemic still, and most of us also still in lockdown and are we engaging in the intense and important conversations surrounding Black Lives Matter, but it’s also eclipse season (plus a bunch of retrogrades and all of that…).

We are literally being asked astrologically to slow down, surrender and let the Universe do her thang, whilst on the other hand we are being asked to engage in protest & debate, whilst on ANOTHER hand (I mean, we only have two!) the pandemic is still demanding most of us to live our lives differently than we used to. Phew, it’s a lot.

And it’s okay to feel like this is a lot. I hope that from this episode you’ll take away that if you don’t rest, you also cannot fight. In the words of @feministsexed, ‘Rest is not the enemy of change. It is one part of its fuel’.
I also talk about Rachel Cargle in this episode (see her website and her Instagram). Plus, I mention April Harter’s @racismrecoverycenter.

More resources will be shared as I engage in conversation with friends and colleagues on these topics.
My intention with this podcast and the Spiritual Fem community moving forward is to emphasise their inclusivity and diversity whilst also acknowledging that it is founded and run by me, someone who experiences privileges from many angles. That’s okay - it just means I have all the more reason to step up and also use this platform to help other women step up too.

I invite you to ask yourself ‘what is it that I need right now?’ more often moving forward. I truly believe that’s at the root of honouring who we are and all we can do to make the world a better place. ~ Don't forget to subscribe! ~ Visit the Spiritual Fem website & join the community on Instagram ~ and let me know what you thought of this episode! Owning Your Spirituality & Reclaiming Your Truth Online ~ w/ Kalyn Nicholson

I met Kalyn during our Yoga Teacher Training in Bali ~ and we instantly connected over tarot cards, our experience of the online world and the idea of sisterhood. To be honest, I think our souls have been connected for a very long time, we only needed to physically meet still!

In this episode, we chat about Kalyn’s spiritual journey, what spirituality means to her, how she experienced our intense YTT experience in Bali and having to come home.
We dive deep into her journey in reclaiming her spirituality and truth, both online and offline. She mentions how spirituality for her means a strong connection to the Universe.
We also discuss her moving into adulthood online and the pressures she felt with that. She is super honest about navigating a more conscious creating through a strong sense of rootedness within. It has allowed her to move out of a mindset rooted in fear and scarcity ~ something in which therapy has helped a lot for her.

I get curious about her favourite spiritual practices (hint: slowing down has a lot do with it!) and how she navigates being vulnerable online, on which she says, “through our vulnerability and imperfection, we create space for others to be human too”.
Ahhh, there is SO MUCH in this episode!

The way in which Kalyn navigates mental health, spirituality & life is truly inspirational (in my very-biased-opinion). We met each other amidst the crazy discomfort the world finds itself in right now & I am so grateful that she very quickly has become one of my close friends in this crazy world of online entrepreneurship. I truly feel we captured the energy of our deep dives in Bali too, which I’m so excited to share with you.

From Doing to Being, Living Your Purpose & Coaching Women ~ w/ Emilia Francesca

I met Emilia in Bali and knew from the minute we started chatting she had so much beautiful wisdom inside of her. Emilia Francesca is an entrepreneur, coach and all-round bad-ass inspiriatrice in my humble opinion! I was so happy when she agreed to come on the podcast to talk about women’s coaching, navigating life and so much more.

In this episode, we dive deep into living your purpose (and how to find that), going within, finding stillness and softness in the process and how to listen to your intuition. Emilia mentions how allowing yourself to lean back can actually give yourself all the answers you’re looking for. You don’t always need to do the work ‘actively’! We talk about being fully present in the ‘now’ and finding stability in our inner world.

I LOVE that the conversation went into softness and stillness. I see Emilia as a super ambitious, driven woman who knows her stuff, and I wasn’t expecting us to feel into the other side of that as well. I left this conversation feeling inspired to both find some time to rest as well as to work on new projects, and I love how both sides of this coin can co-exist.

Cultivating Self-Trust Through Rooting Down

In this episode, I talk you through everything that is currently going on in my life. I guide you through a meditation, I pull cards with you, chat about my morning rituals and routines and how I’ve been connecting to nature. I have been finding a sense of rootedness which I have never truly felt before living here in the Netherlands - so interesting!
This rootedness and, consequently, this deeper connection to myself, made me feel into manifestation more. What is it that I would like from life this year? How can I call this in? I have been visualizing my dream home and feelings around that and through that something clicked into place. A deep trust in that everything will unfold for my highest good came up and hasn’t left me since. This also allowed me to release certain limiting beliefs around my money mindset (which is an ongoing process!).

Please let me know what resonated with you and what you’d like me to dive deeper into as well!
