Interview with The Greeting Committee
We had the pleasure of interviewing The Greeting Comittee over Zoom video! Kansas City-based alt-rock band The Greeting Committee just released their second studio album Dandelion. The record was produced by Jennifer Decilveo (MARINA, FLETCHER, Bat for Lashes) and mixed by Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, Tame Impala). Anchored by a gorgeously airy vocal performance from frontwoman Addie Sartino, the recent single, "Float Away" opens on a candid piece of confession: "Glad it's raining so I don't have to go outside and pretend I'm happy just to be alive." With production from Jennifer Decilveo (MARINA, FLETCHER, Bat for Lashes), the track unfolds in fuzzed-out riffs, frenetic rhythms, and incandescent textures as Sartino documents her inner turmoil with an intense level of detail. "There's a line in the chorus that says, 'Stale rye, once an apple's eye,' which is a way of saying, 'I used to have so much potential, and now I'm sitting here frozen, and I don't know what to do with myself,'" she notes. After slipping into a moment of anti-nostalgia ("Haven't felt this since/Listening to the 1975 while getting high/In somebody's basement party"), "Float Away" closes out with another bit of personal revelation: "Treading water's getting harder/Don't let me fall another martyr." But despite its undeniable melancholy, "Float Away" embodies a strangely exhilarating energy thanks to the stormy urgency of The Greeting Committee's sound and the pure catharsis of its uncompromising honesty. Created by illustrator/animator Kezia Gabriella, the video for "Float Away" perfectly captures the track's whirlwind of feeling. The beautifully offbeat and brightly colorful visual follows Sartino's avatar through a series of gently articulated emotional states — isolation, disconnection, overwhelmed confusion — and ultimately finds her rediscovering a subtle yet powerful sense of hope. About The Greeting Committee: Comprised of Addie Sartino, Brandon Yangmi, Pierce Turcotte, and Austin Fraser, The Greeting Committee have fully embraced a spirit of purposeful sharing since their formation in 2014. Founded soon after Sartino and Yangmi got their start playing open-mic nights in Kansas City, the band self-released their debut EP It's Not All That Bad in fall 2015. The EP's lead single "Hands Down" quickly became a breakout hit, paving the way for The Greeting Committee's signing to Harvest Records when they were all still in high school. After making their Harvest debut with the Meeting People Is Easy EP in 2017 and releasing their debut album This Is It in 2018, the band spent much of the next few years on the road, with sold-out headline shows in major markets such as Chicago, Austin, New York, Los Angeles, and Minneapolis. To date, they've toured with the likes of Bombay Bicycle Club, Tennis, Hippo Campus, and Rainbow Kitten Surprise and taken the stage at leading festivals like Lollapalooza and SXSW, in addition to delivering the I'm Afraid I'm Not Angry EP in late 2019 and appearing in Netflix's To All the Boys: Always and Forever. The band's second album Dandelion was released on September 24 via Harvest Records. We want to hear from you! Interview with Hush Kids
We had the pleasure of interviewing Hush Kids over Zoom video! Nashville -based duo Hush Kids return with a new EP Weatherman. Comprised of renowned artists Jill Andrews and Peter Groenwald, this is Hush Kids' first new release since their critically acclaimed self-titled debut album in 2018. The lead single and title track "Weatherman" is out now and finds the duo reuniting with Grammy Award-winning producer Ian Fitchuk (Kacey Musgraves, Maren Morris, Leon Bridges). "During the spring of 2020, when we were in lockdown, it rained, poured really, for days, maybe even weeks," stated Jill. "My husband Jerred has lived most of his adult life in dry arid places and he wasn't used to it. He would look outside almost every day, saddened by the dark sky and soggy earth. He would say, 'This place just never stops. It's like a rain forest.' I always like to put a silver lining on things so my response was usually something like, 'I guess that's why it's so green and beautiful here.' But the sunless days can take their toll on the best of us, and I could tell that he was feeling down as the rainy days and tumultuous weather wore on. She continued, "All of this was on my mind that day last spring when I got together with Ian and Peter to write for the next Hush Kids record. We sat on Ian's back porch and caught up for a long time, enjoying being in each other's presence so much because it had been a while since we'd last seen each other. This one came easily to us and I think we all cried a little when we were writing it. I'm so happy that we can share it with you guys today! I hope that your days are sunny even when the rain is pouring down." "This was the first song I had written in person for maybe eight months," added Peter. "We were on a porch, it felt kind of weird, but we trusted each other. Jill said she had an idea, and I believe she sang what is now the first line of the song. I tend to have a look on my face when I think something is amazing, and it actually looks like I'm disgusted...food, art, music...it's more of a look of disbelief that something can be that good. That's how I looked when Jill shared this idea with us." Hush Kids is a friendship with music. It began long before it had a name when two beloved Nashville artists with impressive solo careers were put together by their publishers to write songs for other people; in time, they discovered they had been writing for themselves all along. Their earliest sessions revealed more than chemistry, they revealed kindredness, an innate understanding that allowed two very different people to write some of the most deeply personal music of their careers. Incredible, instinctive vocal symmetry, captivating melodies, and intimate, intelligent lyrics speak to the years of tireless craftsmanship and well-earned successes by both artists respectively. Garnering praise from Rolling Stone, Billboard, Paste, Relix, and Folk Alley, among others, Hush Kids' 2018 debut journeys across the unexpected, the strangeness of love rather than the sweetness, the beauty of the world rather than the bullshit. Guided by writer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Ian Fitchuk, the record paired the effortless, addictive pop sensibility of The Carpenters with the dusty, atmospheric, desert landscape of Robert Plant and Allison'sKraus's Americana classic Raising Sand. Despite the name, Hush Kids is not about quiet, it's about stepping away from the wrong kind of noise to embrace the music. A gifted composer, producer, and musician, Peter has toured extensively and shared the stage with artists such as The Civil Wars, Andrew Belle, and Ruston Kelly. In 2020, he joined forces with Sean McConnell and Garrison Starr to release an EP as My Sister, My Brother. Never one to rest, Peter followed that up with an EP in early 2021 co-written and co-produced alongside production duo I WAS THE LIONtitledCome To Life. Jill, a founding member of the alt/countryfavoriteThe Everybodyfields, has performed alongside The Avett Brothers, The Secret Sisters, and DrewHolcomb & the Neighbors as well as secured television placements that includeGrey's Anatomy, This Is Us, and the theme song for SyFy'sbelovedWynona Earp. In2020, she released her critically acclaimed album and accompanying book Thirties, and followed that up with a dark EP of songs from her back catalog called Vultures. We want to hear from you! Interview with The Vegabonds
We had the pleasure of interviewing The Vegabonds over Zoom video! The Nashville-based alternative southern rock band—THE VAGABONDS will celebrate the release of their new album, Sinners and Saints, this Friday, September 24th, 2021, with a showcase spot at this year's AmericanaFest in Nashville. Produced by Grammy-nominated Tom Tapley [Mastodon, Blackberry Smoke] – who did the honors on the last two Vegabonds releases – the determinedly upbeat Sinners and Saints expands the group's southern rock pallet and jam band pedigree to explore funky, keyboard-driven blues-pop in first single, "Can't Deal" before reaching new limits with the intersection of country, soul and rock in "Heartache and a Memory," and even some Fleetwood Mac-style grooves in "Feels Right" — the latter a co-write from their close friend and songwriter and jack-of-all-trades Ross "Brother" Beasley. It was in May of last year that The Vegabonds recorded their last new music, a live EP, recorded during the first full-band live stream to take place during lockdown. After a two- month quarantine, this was the first time the quintet was able to play together, making it the longest span of time the band had gone in a decade, without playing a show or even being in the same room together. The result, The Vegabonds Live from West End Sound, was released this past March. Their last studio album, V, was released in early 2019 to much critical acclaim with Popmatters declaring, "…the album fires on all cylinders with a combustible combination of tub-thumpin alt-country, searing rock riffs and robust but heartfelt lyrics that will help ease the pain." While The Deli Nashville said of the new music, "...Fans of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, the Allman Brothers, or Springsteen will rave about V…" The Alabama-born, Tennessee-bred Southern rock band, The Vegabonds got their start in Alabama, after meeting while attending Auburn University in 2009 and playing the college circuit across the Southeastern United States. Their popularity quickly burgeoned to the point where they found their fans singing along word-for-word to their first hits like "Georgia Fire" and "Shaky Hands." From Ole Miss to South Carolina, students buzzed about The Vegabonds authentic sound and their seemingly effortless ability to bring the house down. Through word of mouth, the group's fan base rapidly grew, and the guys learned they had something distinctive with their eclectic mix of Southern Rock, Country, and earnest songwriting. Their DIY efforts delivered three full-length albums and an EP before partnering with Blue Élan Records. THE VEGABONDS are Daniel Allen (Lead vocals/songwriter), Richard Forehand (Lead guitars/vocals), Paul Bruen (bass), Beau Cooper (keyboards/vocals/songwriter) and Bryan Harris (drums) We want to hear from you! Interview with RYALS
We had the pleasure of interviewing RYALS over Zoom video! From Kyiv, Ukraine to New York City and far-flung corners of the world along the way, pop singer-songwriter RYALS is living proof that a dream and a lot of hard work can take you out of an oppressive situation and bring you anywhere you want to go. RYALS' forthcoming EP Forward is the culmination of his years of hard work and struggles that have taken him to where he is now, ready to tell his story in music. The most important thing RYALS wants people to take away from this EP is that "we all only have one life to live and that we can't dwell on the hard times forever." He wants his fans to walk away from the EP with hope for a better future, saying "It is your perception that makes life brighter, you can manifest your life and don't let anybody tell you otherwise. You just keep moving it Forward." When asked about the motivation behind his upcoming Forward EP, RYALS said, "Forward is my life story: an oppressive society, battling homophobia, immigration, establishing my own identity, love and break ups, my mom's alcohol addiction and the pain of ultimately loosing her. There is so much happening in my life and the way I process it is to write about it. At the end of the day, it's my dream that got me through my adolescence and continues to get me through the hardest times of my life. The hard work that goes into sustaining a dream gives meaning to what I had to endure along the way." RYALS grew up in Kyiv, capital city of Ukraine. He earned a scholarship to a Bachelor of Arts in Acting and Musical Theatre from the Kyiv Academy of the Arts. After which, he performed in musical theater where he continued crafting his singing, dancing and acting skills. In between touring Ukraine in musicals, RYALS was cast for a role in the movie Let's Dance, which premiered nationwide. He then began his own career path as a songwriter and a performer with his first album State Of Liberty. He signed a contract with the Holland American Cruise Line and embarked on his journey around the world performing onboard the ship. While working on the cruise ship, RYALS was struck with the realization that there were other countries that had already started accepting homosexuality and people were able to be themselves. RYALS made one of the hardest decisions in his life to immigrate to America and start his life in the United States in attempt to reach his full potential. After reestablishing his life and finding support in his husband, he was ready to get back to music, and this time with a strong established message. "No one ever deserves to be shamed, persecuted or killed because of their sexual orientation. I am grateful for all the people who fought and are continuing to fight for human rights. Thanks to them, a lot of people already are able to at least know how it feels to live a normal life. But there's still 72 countries on this planet where being part of LGBTQIA community is illegal and in 12 countries nowadays it's being punished by a death sentence," says RYALS. Now that RYALS can live his authentic life, he focuses on joining the activists that paved the way for him to continue fighting homophobia and supporting people like him who are going through the same issues he recently faced. RYALS and his husband work with Rainbow Railroad that provide immediate assistance to vulnerable people across the globe, and other human rights organizations that assist LGBTQIA people around the world. Interview with Jillian Rossi
Together with Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Jillian Rossi over Zoom video! Singer-songwriter Jillian Rossi dropped her strikingly powerful new single "Give Me A Reason," a song that emphasizes Jillian's vocal prowess and her hopes to continue to cement herself as the next power vocalist of the next rising generation of pop acts. The 21-year-old artist recently teased the song on her Tik Tok, receiving over 1 million views and attention from Shaquille O'Neal, Paris Hilton, Disney Channel Star Skai Jackson, Tik Tok star Nick Austin and other celebrities who commented on her profile in anticipation of the song – gaining over 100,000 pre-saves for her 2nd song in a row. This makes her the first independent pop artist in history to accomplish this feat on back to back songs. Give Me A Reason within 48 hours has been featured already on Spotify's New Music Friday & Chill Pop, Apple Music's New Music Daily, & Amazon Music's Breakthrough Pop & Brand New Music – fully independently. "Give Me A Reason" follows the release Rossi's hit single "Fever Dream," which has independently become one of the most viral songs on the internet with over 13 million combined views on Tik Tok and over 10 million streams across all platforms since its release on April 28th. "Fever Dream" was quoted by Brooke Reese of "The Chart Show" (on Apple Music/Beats 1 and Lyrical Lemonade) as "one of the most successful pre-save campaigns from an independent artist of all time." "Fever Dream" obtained 120,000 pre-saves prior to release, making it the most pre-added song on all of Apple Music during the week of April 15- April 23rd. The song also made Spotify's Viral 50 Charts (#22 in USA, #26 in Canada, #32 in Australia, #34 in the Philippines, #22 in Malaysia, #35 in South Africa,) was added to 8 editorial playlists on Spotify including "New Music Friday," "Daily Lift," "Fresh & Chill," "Teen Beats," "Songs To Scream In Your Car," "Everyday Favorites," "Chill Pop" "next gen singer/songwriters", & "Tween Pop (Radio)" and became #1 On Snapchat's "Viral Songs." Reflecting on the song, Jillian comments, "'Give Me A Reason' is a song about a broken relationship that you know is on its last leg but you're going in and out of denial about it. It's inspired by a true story about a guy who moved across the country as we were in a long-distance relationship, and I begged for him to give me a reason for me to stay. This song is definitely one of my favorites and I feel it embodies exactly what I want to do as an artist, with the hard hitting anthemic chorus with the more emotional, ballad-like verses. The love I have already gotten on this song from Tik Tok and social media is insane. I can't believe I was able to get 100k pre-saves on two songs in a row, and this one even getting recognition from famous people I've always looked up to like Skai Jackson, Paris Hilton and even Shaquille O'Neal (which SHOCKED me). I am so excited for what's to come!" Jillian is a graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston and is originally from Long Island, NY. As a student at Berklee, Jillian performed Alicia Keys' "Girl on Fire" in front of a sold out crowd of 37,000 people at a Boston Red Sox game at Fenway Park, and also had the amazing opportunity to perform an original song live for Long Island legend Billy Joel in front of a crowd with Joel comparing her to the likes of Taylor Swift. Interview with Jude Cole
We had the pleasure of interviewing Jude Cole over Zoom video! JUDE COLE is a simple but driven man. Throughout his long and storied career, he's worn many a creative hat, whether it be as a singer, songwriter, guitarist/sideman, film composer, producer, manager or even a stint as music critic and interviewer to acts like The Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper, Bob Seger and dozens of other superstars. His first love, songwriting, remains steadfast and true, which is why he's releasing his first new music in 21 years. "I never wanted to bookmark myself," he explains. "I really do enjoy creating new music, and I don't care to look back all that much. I have the Gold and Platinum records in my tank, but I don't hang them on the walls. I don't always like to look at past achievements — I prefer right now and a little of what's next. I spent the last 22 years managing artists like Jason Wade and Lifehouse and being a very behind-the-scenes writer, producer and manager. For me, these two new solo projects allow me to do what I've always done creatively, but with a new ability to actually stand back and appreciate it." To that end, he's most definitively moved the artistic needle forward with the contents of his two most recent solo releases. COUP DE MAIN shines the spotlight on COLE originals that showcase his multi-genre mastery, while COOLERATOR brings a modern-day retro-cool vibe to a score of doo-wop favorites both classic and under-served. COUP DE MAIN encompasses a variety of styles, from the opening mid-tempo gambit of "Taking Away My Home" to the acoustic and ethereal lament of "Only Far Away" to the progressive swing of "Wax Wings." COLE displays some formidable forward-leaning, atomically inspired chops on "The Dark," which soars into the heart of the stratosphere with a generous cosmic assist from acclaimed fellow producer/artist, Patrick Leonard. "We've been friends and very close neighbors for a long time, and he would literally walk his small synth down to my studio and plug in," details COLE. "He did all the synth work on this song, and I think it's one of the reasons it sounds the way it does. Patrick knew that's what I was going for — and since he even produced Pink Floyd, he nailed it. He's a wonderful, wonderful musician. I can't say enough about him." Not only that, but Lifehouse drummer Ricky Woolstenhulme, Jr. gave COLE and Leonard all the space they needed on "The Dark" to really stretch things out. "I asked Ricky to listen to some specific Pink Floyd records," he reveals. "I mean, Nick Mason plays everything so painfully simple. He allows all the moving parts to do their job because he's not in the way. Rick took all that to heart. He gave us a consistent bed of ride cymbal, kick and snare, topped with a few timeless drum fills. It really was fun to emulate that '70s sound." "They furnished off an apartment with a two room Roebuck sale The Coolerator was crammed with TV dinners and ginger ale But when Pierre found work the little money comin' worked out well C'est La Vie say the old folks, it goes to show you never can tell" -Chuck Berry Meanwhile, over on another sonic fulcrum, COLE gets to celebrate his pure doo-wop jones on the aforementioned COOLERATOR. Bear witness to his loving take on The Charts' rare gem "Deserie" ("one of the most beautiful doo-wop songs ever"), the twangy Chuck Berry/Rockpile vibes of "Dear Dad," and the horn-supported rock & stroll of Guitar Slim's "It Hurts to Love Someone (When They Don't Love You)." This collection has been a long time coming. "COOLERATOR is a piece of work that's been over ten years in the making — and it's not any sort of epic work you would think would take me ten years," he says with a hearty laugh. "It was really just a pet project in between a lot of other hats, inspired by the true heart and soul of '50s and '60s doo-wop music." The overall intention for COOLERATOR was to keep it simple and look for the right performance, "I always wondered how they made those records and why are they so soulful… why they're so moving. When you hear about '50s music, it's often bobby socks and malt shops. I know that's part of the Americana culture, but it doesn't really reflect the groups that were singing on the street corners." The fact is, JUDE COLE is a career artist who's always looking at the next creative signpost up ahead, with nary a glance back in his rearview mirror. And with Chuck Berry as his COOLERATOR guide and inspiration, C'est la vie —it goes to show you never can tell how blues, rock, rhythm, and jazz will all come together to join him on whatever artistic roads he plans to travel down next. Interview with Waiting for Smith
We had the pleasure of interviewing Waiting For Smith over Zoom video! Waiting For Smith is singer/songwriter Harry Lloyd. Formerly a ski instructor in the French Alps, Lloyd broke his back in two places during avalanche training. Wondering whether he'd survive in the helicopter on the way to the hospital, he had an epiphany that if he was ok, he should dedicate his life to music. After spending a year in bed recuperating and learning to play guitar, he formed Waiting For Smith, named after endlessly waiting for his original drummer Smith to show up. Following the release of the effervescent "Long Life", Waiting For Smith unveils "Lines of Love", emphasising that in times of doubt, often all we need is a compassionate ear. "It's often difficult to over speculate, one minute you're up and then you're down and that's your day." LINES OF LOVE "For me, that's life – or my life for sure – in a tiny lyrical nutshell. It sways back and forth between unbridled joy and moments of great despair. But I guess I'd be a lousy songwriter if I didn't feel anything…" WFS has seen success garnering over 413K streams on Spotify and landing radio play on over 180 stations around the world, including Huw Stephens on Radio 1, Jo Whiley on Radio 2, 6 Music and Flux Fm. With features in British GQ and Holland's JFK Magazine. "With music, I'm always trying to cheer myself up first - It's like free therapy for me. And then ultimately others, I really enjoy making people feel better. That's the ultimate aim." We want to hear from you! Interview with Gavin Turek
We had the pleasure of interviewing Gavin Turek over Zoom video! Gavin Turek has been a celebrated musician for years both for her "endlessly groovy and gripping" (NME) recorded work and spirited live performances (often featuring choreography she learned from her time spent in Ghana), and today finds the much anticipated release of her debut full-length album, 'Madame Gold' on her own Madame Gold Records. 'Madame Gold', is a stunning debut album that represents Gavin's personal alter-ego who she sought strength in to overcome her inner saboteur. After bouts of self-doubt, discouragement from the music industry, and feelings of helplessness amidst the numerous global crises of the last year, Gavin entered the studio to complete the much-anticipated project and ended up creating a true powerhouse tour de force of modern R&B. Sonically the album trades the starlit disco vibes of her earlier work for an irresistible groove-heavy, R&B foundation. Tapping into the power that comes from vulnerability and taking inspiration from badass divas like Grace Jones and Diana Ross, 70s soul icons like Curtis Mayfield and the Isley Brothers, and modern day pioneers like Tame Impala and Raphael Saadiq, Gavin's sound is an honorable throwback to the past while also undeniably fresh and current in the modern music world. The more contemplative moments on the album capture a completely different side of the songwriter. "We took a more experimental route while creating the hybrid of soul and pop I'm known for, in order capture the inner transformation that was happening in me. I didn't want to repeat what I did before," said Gavin about the sonic direction of the album. NY Magazine's The Cut said the LP (produced and co-written by Childish Gambino collaborator Chris Hartz) is "sure to be a summer staple", while BUST called Turek "not only magical but a woman with integrity and heart." Early singles "Illusions" and "Slide" (feat. bLAck pARty) garnered praise from Stereogum who praised the former as a "blissed-out love song", and KCRW who called the latter "a perfect fit for your weekend on the boardwalk, or late-nite cruising down the boulevard." Also out today is the music film accompaniment for "Hero", which Gavin says "tells the origin story of my alter ego Madame Gold, through a cinematic lens. At the height of the pandemic, I found myself depleted and discouraged, unsure how to move forward. One fateful day, I tuned in for an "artist talk" given by one of my favorite visual artists, Renee Cox. Her work and encouraging words were exactly what I needed to be reminded of who I was: a hero. Conceptually and creatively directed by myself and brilliantly directed by Josh Sondock, the HERO music film is meant to inspire people, especially women who feel lost and out of touch with their personal strength, to become their own heroes and save themselves instead of waiting for someone else." Through the writing sessions for the album, Gavin exorcised deep feelings of personal pain, confusion, loss, love, moments of magic, and pressure. The result is an eclectic, pristine, and cathartic unveiling of an artist truly coming into her own -- be it on "Whisper" (a futuristic take on personal faith that includes a heartwarming interview snippet with Gavin's mother), "Hero" (a certifiable bop about leaning into your own personal strength), or "Elevator" (which Refinery29 called the "perfect soundtrack for a fresh start"). According to NPR, "one way or another, Gavin Turek is going to entertain you", whether through her live performances or her music. You may have heard of Gavin in the past through her entrancing solo work, acclaimed collaborations with TOKiMONSTA, her performance on CONAN, or performing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! with Tuxedo, Mayer Hawthorne, and Cee Lo respectively. From growing up with a father who played piano and tagging alongside her mother who toured coffeeshops singing gospel, to studying dance in Ghana, to cutting her teeth as a working musician in Los Angeles, performing has been in the forefront of Gavin's mind for her entire life, and with 'Madame Gold' the future is looking nothing but bright.
