Interview with Highland Kites

We had the pleasure of interviewing Highland Kites over Zoom video! Highland Kites started as Los Angeles native Marissa Lamar's solo project, and was a way for her to deal with the aftermath of her beating a severe case of neurologic Lyme Disease, losing much of her earlier life in the process. Music was a way to deal with not just the pain, but to help her heal and find a new purpose. Having never played or sung she started learning piano in 2014 at 26 and within 6 months played her first show. What started as just something to help her mind heal and give her an artistic outlet became an obsession and something she fell deeply in love with. She shortly after met drummer, Neil Briggs through a mutual friend. Their musical styles were very different but the contrast created a sound that they both resonated with. They have since released 4 EPs, a full length album and many singles, done 6 tours and over 100 shows. Their music has been described as "Hope Sandoval fronting Radiohead". They have a love for adding texture to songs, and creating dreamy landscapes around brutally honest and direct lyrics. We want to hear from you! Interview with Sarah Proctor

We had the pleasure of interviewing Sarah Proctor over Zoom video! UK singer-songwriter, Sarah Proctor, releases her brand-new single entitled "Not For Me" along with the music video. The song, which is inspired by true moments in Sarah's life, is about unrequited love and self-discovery. The track is a universally relatable, powerful ballad, and a continuation of Sarah's signature mellow style with passionate vocals and heartfelt lyrics over a soft production. "Not For Me" is available now at all digital retail providers via Foundation/Geffen Records. Sarah says, "I wrote 'Not For Me' for everyone who has loved and not felt it in return. I think as humans we can sometimes get caught between connections, where it's not just friendship but not quite love, it's somewhere in between. I've been caught in a few of those moments, and this song & music video completely tell my story of that from beginning to end. My life is made up of all these little moments which have helped me discover my sexuality and realize who I am." The accompanying music video follows a young Sarah in grade school as she realizes her feelings for a fellow classmate. It is a beautiful depiction of Sarah's real-life experiences that made her come to terms with her sexuality. Click HERE to watch. About Sarah Proctor UK-born singer and songwriter, Sarah Proctor, hails from the small town of Billingham and possesses a singular ability to project feelings translucently in between sparse guitar chords and minimal production. Inspired by Lana Del Rey, Adele, Daniel Caesar and Coldplay, she quietly cultivated a style of her own. She came out at 19-years-old and ended up in Los Angeles where the gay community is super prevalent, and it helped her embrace that side of her even more. She signed a publishing deal with Concord Music Publishing and released her independent debut EP Show Your Love in 2020. Quietly stirring up buzz, Atwood Magazine described the single "Lay Down" as "a track that will get you in your feels, in all the right ways," and Wonderland Magazine raved, "Poised for success, Proctor's artistry certainly follows in the footsteps of those she's influenced by." In 2021, Sarah landed a major label deal with Geffen Records and introduced her next chapter with her previous singles "The Breaks" and "Lost". The music video for "Lost" is especially important to Sarah, as she is a member of the LGBTQIA+ community and the video was inspired by the emotional struggles she experienced growing up in a small town while discovering her sexuality. Her single "Worse," received critical acclaim from The New York Times. Sarah says, "I hope to be someone people can relate to through my music and lyrics. I want to create a safe space within my music and at my gigs where people can be totally free to be who they are and celebrate that." We want to hear from you! Interview with ENZI

We had the pleasure of interviewing ENZI over Zoom video! Colorado native and alternative-pop artist ENZI has released her new single "Time Flies" – available via all DSPs. Produced and co-written by frequent collaborators Bobby Campbell and Jeff Cohen (Macy Gray, Sugarland, The Band Perry), the song was also mastered by Nathan Dantzler (Niall Horan, Vince Gill, Lady A). "Time Flies" showcases ENZI's strength in creating powerful and catchy choruses while also perfectly encapsulating the feelings of anger and hopelessness all felt during the past year's lockdown. "Time Flies" is one of the most personal tracks I've written to date. In the last year, I struggled so much to find any motivation to just get out of bed. The crumbling world felt like it was crumbling all on top of me and it was completely paralyzing, emotionally and physically. After finally opening up to some others, I realized I was not alone. I wanted to write a song that encapsulated this feeling of total isolation, overwhelming apathy, and complete mental paralysis. I know they say "time flies when you're having fun!" But time also flies when you're mentally withdrawn. - ENZI "Time Flies" comes on the heels of ENZI's hometown live performance last weekend – her first since the pandemic – where she previewed the track to fans at Lost Lake Lounge in Denver alongside previous singles "Retrograde" and "Mad Chemistry." Both tracks were met with critical acclaim from Refinery29, UPROXX, American Songwriter, BlackBook, Colorado Public Radio, Alternative Press, Westword, and more upon their release. Originally from Northern Colorado, ENZI recently moved to Nashville to pursue her studies in songwriting/music major at Belmont University. She released her debut single "Flipside" in 2018 and has since scored multiple syncs across MTV's original programming as well as support from iHeartRadio. She was awarded a top-five spot at KTCL 93.3's Big Gig in Colorado and she was also tapped to open the station's Not So Silent Night concert in 2019. With only a handful of singles to her name, ENZI has already shared stages with The Head and The Heart, Fitz and the Tantrums, Walk the Moon, and more – all before her junior year of college. Interview with Paolo Gregoletto of Trivium

We had the pleasure of interviewing Paolo Gregoletto of Trivium over Zoom video! Grammy-nominated band TRIVIUM — Matt Heafy [vocals, guitar], Corey Beaulieu [guitar], Paolo Gregoletto [bass], and Alex Bent [drums] — have released their tenth album, titled In The Court Of The Dragon, via longtime label Roadrunner Records. The record was produced and mixed by Josh Wilbur and recorded in the Fall of 2020 at Full Sail University in Orlando. The band has also shared the new song "Feast Of Fire," which is joined by an official music video. The footage was filmed at the band's HQ — The Hangar in Orlando. It was shot by director John Deeb. "There's always that one song you aren't expecting when you begin writing a new album," says Gregoletto about the song and, in turn, sharing an inside look at the band's songwriting process. "It could be a riff written on the spot in the rehearsal space, a lyric that pairs just right with a melody, or in the case of 'Feast Of Fire,' sitting right there in front of us in the middle of a demo that Corey brought in. We were well into pre-production at Full Sail when we all decided that something about the demo we had tracked was good but could be even better. Our producer Josh Wilbur even had in his notes: 'Bridge is special, maybe so special it needs its own song.' We tore the song apart and began again on the spot." He continues, "We went into this album knowing we had time to consider everything and anything that came about during this period, and if need be, we could start again if it didn't feel right given that no touring was on the horizon." Further pulling back the curtain, he says, "I had the words 'Feast Of Fire' written in my running list of notes for lyric ideas that I try to amass before we record. Something about the phrase stuck out to me. It felt like the missing piece of the story we were trying to tell with this album, a climactic moment and a real centerpiece for the narrative." He finishes, "After all these years, I'm still blown away at how a song can really appear out of thin air and take the album to a place you weren't expecting. Those are the moments we are always looking for when making a record." The album cover is an original oil painting by French artist Mathieu Nozieres (@mathieunozieres on Instagram) "While the music of In The Court Of The Dragon was taking shape, we knew we needed epic artwork of the type that you might see on the wall of an important museum from a long dead renaissance master," says Heafy. "After extensive research, we found one of the few living artists who is capable of creating artwork like Caravaggio and Gentileschi — painter Mathieu Nozieres. Mathieu took our song title and created an original oil painting on canvas unlike anything we could have ever imagined. It's so staggeringly breathtaking and epic and it looks like what the song and album sounds like." Last month, Trivium shared the album's title track, "In The Court Of The Dragon," which featured an epic intro composed and orchestrated by Ihsahn (Emperor) and was accompanied by an official short film music video directed by Ryan Mackfall. Loudwire called out the song as "a skillful blend of dynamics. And blast beats just sound really, really good beneath Matt Heafy's soothing clean singing" while Revolver labeled it "epic." Interview with Jaci Butler

We had the pleasure of interviewing Jaci Butler over Zoom video! LA-based singer, songwriter, and creator, Jaci Butler, releases the first single off her upcoming EP, "Breakup Season," today. With an accompanying music video, this track is "about starting anew on your own; whether that's breaking up with a job, relationship; however you see fit for you as a listener. It's about the changing of time. Realizing it's time to break off with the old, find yourself, acknowledge that it's been over for a while, and it's finally time to let go" Jaci says. She elaborates; "There's all these things I believe in - whether it be fate, good luck charms, love - and they all play a part in my life. This song is also super special to me because I got to reunite with a fellow American Idol Alum, Avalon Young, who helped me co-write." Hailing from Dallas, Jaci has been paving her own way in the entertainment world since 2009. As the lead singer and founder of Dallas-based Jagged Row, she toured all over North America collecting over 600 shows under her belt. Throughout the band's 8 year stint, they recorded 4 EPS, 1 full - length album, and opened for acts such as Hanson, Bowling for Soup, Dalton Rapattoni, etc. Jaci's solo journey officially kicked off after joiningmusical.ly in 2017 and moving to Los Angeles the following year; where she then released "Color Me You" and garnered 1 million fans on the app. A few years later, and 4.1 million + TikTok fans later; you'll find Jaci playing Roblox daily with the 700K+ Lucky Charms on her gaming Youtube Channel, and singing and vlogging on her other various platforms. Currently, in the studio recording her first self-produced EP as a solo artist, Jaci says "I was in a band for so long and released multiple projects, but this is the first time I feel like I'm putting myself out there and being 100% vulnerable with the things I've written. I'm excited for people who know me online, on TikTok or as a gamer, to see that I'm also a serious musician. I'm coming out as Jaci the musician!" We want to hear from you! Interview with Twiztid

We had the pleasure of interviewing TWIZTID over Zoom video! The TWIZTID tale is gritty and fascinating folklore, built on self-determination, fearless creativity, and the elimination of the boundaries between artist and audience. The dedicated supporters who stand with co-conspirators Jamie Madrox and Monoxide are more than fans: they are family. The duo remembers what it meant to be part of the crowd before they leaped the barricades onto the stage themselves, and with unrelenting passion and aggression, they're taking all of us with them. There's a rogue's gallery of hooks, rhythms, and riffs in the TWIZTID bag of tricks. For 25 years, they've concocted artistic anarchy rooted in the streetwise storytelling sophistication of hip-hop, trance-inducing hypnotic beats, and the seething bite of hard rock rage. Merging horror movies, comics, and a level of depravity and violence rivaling the grimiest of pulp fiction in the annals of Americana, TWIZTID is the reflection of a tightly knit subculture and the sound of unbridled id. TWIZTID spin emotional truth into even the wildest of tales, resulting in something endlessly relatable to the alienated and disenfranchised. The music, multimedia, and merchandise originate from their own Majik Ninja Entertainment, headquartered in their native Detroit. With over a dozen entries on the Billboard charts, TWIZTID built themselves into an institution, without the help of mainstream gatekeepers at MTV, traditional radio, or major press. They've brought their adrenaline-soaked, unbound artistic mania on the road, with metalcore acts like Motionless In White and on the Vans Warped Tour, all without forsaking the worldwide family they helped strengthen during their initial decade-plus on Psychopathic Records. TWIZTID built the connection they maintain with their fiercely dedicated legion of supporters to last and to evolve. Everything Majik Ninja does harken back to that original impulse shared by Monoxide and Jamie Madrox: to make art that swings a big ax at the boundary between audience and artist. Interview with EMELINE

We had the pleasure of interviewing EMELINE over Zoom video! Rhode Island-born, L.A.-based singer/songwriter EMELINE premiere the spellbinding video for her recent single "this is how i learn to say no" — watch it HERE. Filmed by the ocean, the breathtakingly shot visual serves as a perfect counterpart to the 22-year-old artist's message of setting boundaries and reclaiming your power. "This music video shows the many sides to my vulnerability and strength throughout my personal healing and growth," says EMELINE. "I wanted it to show my pain and liberation by the shore. I love storytelling; and with this video I wanted it to be about connecting the audience with my emotions and allowing my lyrics & performance to be that bridge." Directed by Joelle Grace Taylor (a director/photographer who's worked with FLETCHER, Ari Lennox, and Flo Milli), the video for "this is how i learn to say no" opens on EMELINE at the edge of the shore, fiercely glamorous in a chainmail dress. With a ferocious intensity, she passionately portrays the song's narrative of rediscovering your inner strength (an element informed by her recovery from a painful relationship, as well as by watching her parents' marriage come to an end). As the video unfolds, EMELINE tears off the heavy jewelry around her neck and finds her way to freedom, eventually running into the water in the track's final seconds. Released in August, "this is how i learn to say no" showcases the stunning vocal range and minimalist yet hypnotically moody sound EMELINE first revealed on her breakthrough single "flowers & sex." A #4 hit on Spotify's U.S. Viral 50 chart, "flowers & sex" amassed over 10 million global streams within just eight weeks of its premiere, landed on nearly 30 Spotify editorial playlists, and earned critical praise from outlets like Paper (who noted that the "blunt pop anthem…arrives at a time when people are craving a little self-love and a lot of sexual pleasure after a year of endless isolation") and Earmilk (who hailed the song as "seductive, confident and perfect in synergy" while praising EMELINE as "transformative"). A multi-instrumentalist who plays guitar and piano, EMELINE is now at work on more new music. With gritty honesty and powerful vulnerability, she creates all of her output with a mission of uplifting and supporting women everywhere. We want to hear from you! Interview with Chris Mardini

We had the pleasure of interviewing Chris Mardini over Zoom video! Chris Mardini belongs to the rare breed of artists born to give voice to our most complex emotions. At just 19-years-old, the New York City-raised singer/songwriter has mastered the art of merging intense self-reflection with poetic social commentary—a dynamic made all the more potent by his innate talent for crafting spellbinding melodies. A near-lifelong musician who took up guitar at age 10 and got his start playing Beatles covers at iconic venues like The Bitter End, Mardini sets his soul-baring songwriting to a singular collision of elements: the brooding urgency of classic alt-rock, kinetic rhythms of underground hip-hop, and impassioned vocal work of timeless singer/songwriters like Jeff Buckley. Mardini discovered a love of seminal rock bands like Led Zeppelin as a child and later became obsessed with Nirvana, one of the most formative influences on his songwriting. After cutting his teeth playing covers at local spots like Arlene's Grocery—and occasionally venturing down to Asbury Park to perform at the legendary Wonder Bar—he started writing and self-producing his own material in his bedroom. With the arrival of his debut single "Retrospective Outlook" in September 2019, Mardini immediately proved the appeal of his unguarded honesty, and soon earned praise from outlets like Popdose (who noted that "the ghosts of Nirvana, Odelay-era Beck, and mid-decade hip-hop haunt his music"). In the making of his debut album, Mardini joined forces with Grammy Award-winning producer Marc Swersky and recorded at New Jersey's Sound on Sound Studios with a lineup of veteran musicians, infusing each track with the same volatile energy of his mosh-heavy live set. Viscerally charged but intricately detailed, the album's galvanizing alt-rock fuses perfectly with Mardini's exploration of alienation and insecurity, self-sabotage and social pressure. In all of his output, Mardini showcases the sophisticated musicianship he first began honing as a kid growing up in the West Village. By channeling so much raw vulnerability into his songs, Mardini has ultimately found his way to a glorious catharsis that's palpable in every track he shares with the world. And while his lyrics often speak to the pain of isolation, he hopes his music might leave others with a powerful sense of understanding and connection. We want to hear from you! Interview with Ravenna Golden

We had the pleasure of interviewing Ravenna Golden over Zoom video! Singer/songwriter Ravenna Golden follows her Big Beat Records debut single "R U Joking" and punchy "Girlfriend Sucks" with her latest single "Expensive City" – an ode to those hustling to turn their dreams into a reality. Watch the music video HERE. "Expensive City" was written from a vulnerable place for Ravenna, a time when she felt like giving up hope that she'd succeed in doing what she loved. According to Ravenna, that feeling serves its purpose when a great song comes out of it. She hopes to remind fans that, even when things are not going your way, you can have fun within the frustrations of daily life. Ravenna Golden's story starts in the suburbs of St. Louis, soaking up the sun and diverse sounds of Blink 182, Green Day, MGMT, Bruno Mars, Lil Wayne and Elliot Smith. After taking a poetry class in high school, she set verses to melodies and recorded a demo on a lark. Freshman year of college, she sent the songs to her old friend Dylan Brady who insisted Golden work on a full-length album.Fast forward to now and Ravenna is a founding member of the Hella and Cake Pop crews and a leader in crafting a unique sound and stealing center stage in the minds of kids and critics alike. Weaving fibers of pop-punk, indie rock and electronic mayhem into a vibrant fabric of original noise, she creates a blistering energy that explodes with life and sweat on stage. In 2015, Ravenna gave birth to Girl Gone Wild, an 11-track trip through toxic relationships, party scenes, introspectiveness, existentialism, glitter and gore. Soft ballads are sandwiched between harsh-hitting electro-pop beats and toy synths. It's a little bit bubblegum with a whole lot of bite, and the process of its creation proved to Golden that music was her destiny - especially performing on stage.Things bubbled from there into a tight string of singles, each song exploring a different shade of personality. It boiled over with 2018 single "7th Grade," a guitar-driven sing-along ripped straight from the summer of 2001. Since then, she's collaborated with WHIPPED CREAM and Perto on "IDFC", chillpill on his remix of "FUCK THE CLUB," and 6 songs on the Cake Pop 2 album, among others. She made her Big Beat Records debut with "R U Joking" in May 2021. This is just the beginning for Ravenna Golden, stay tuned for much more to come. We want to hear from you!
