Interview with LP
We had the pleasure of interviewing LP over Zoom video! There's this girl in the corner and she's small, really small, and she looks like a boy, and she's seething with emotion, with rage and love - because she's alone, because we're all alone, because our parents didn't get it. She just found out faster. Her skin is thinner because her heart is bigger. Her heart pushes against the skin, stretching it, sometimes too much. She is a bloodletter, this girl. "A bloodletter of emotion," she says. I think, given the right or the wrong moment, you are too. Born Italian. New York. You've got to understand that; the hottest blood, the toughest city, the smallest girl. Today she is 5' 3" and just over a hundred pounds but her sound is anthemic, maxed out. You don't believe your ear-eyes when you see-hear, pealing from the body of one fighting with not enough, the music of so, so much. It is the music of emotional emergency, a prayer sung loud into a bottle and cast out to sea. I think of Judy Garland, Bjork, Freddie Mercury if he had to deal with being a fucking girl. From a little match, a conflagration. LP is the medicine. She is good for heartbreak, which she knows, and in a way, lives in. She writes from that, sings from that. The annoyance, the grain of ocean-floor sand troubling the oyster. It's loss. It's always there. Her mother died when she was a teenager. She sang too — a voice, LP remembers, that "was very operatic, kind of like Maria Callas with a Julie Andrews cleanness to her tone." She'll never recover, but there is the mounting hope, the certain knowledge, hard earned, that "you can wield suffering, which is strength and power." Church, no church. Gay, not gay. The bloodletting's the same. The blood-pearls of a poet-oyster who has hit songs and record deals and plays sold out shows all over the world and goes to bed saying to herself, "I love, I love, I love, I love…" We want to hear from you! Interview with HuDost
We had the pleasure of interviewing HuDost over Zoom video! HuDost's new album, 'Anthems of Home', is a lush, breathtaking original collection of compositions that ask important questions and evoke the imagery of dreams. The music of HuDost weaves a seamless tapestry of folk, world, and rock that renders tears and laughter in listeners, cultivating the nameless longing that abides somewhere in all our hearts and invoking total celebration. HuDost's core musicians are Moksha Sommer, from Montréal, and Jemal Wade from Kentucky. "2020 and 2021 have been a time of conflict and resolution, pain and discovery, challenge and grace, fear and courage for almost everyone. As parents, social activists, and musicians, we have gone through this time of challenge with the hope of keeping our minds, hearts, and arms open. We feel that our new album gives voice to this journey in a way that will remain timeless and will prove the resilience that we all share. It also gives room for the greater vision of what is and what can be and the love that emerges when we allow truth to be seen and spoken." Moksha Sommer, HuDost HuDost's previous album 'of Water + Mercy' received rave reviews and as an independent release reached #24 in the BILLBOARD SALES CHARTS for Folk/Americana also winning the 2020 Independent Music Award for Social Action Song. In the last year they also received two of the 'Best of Nashville 2020' awards. 'Anthems of Home' continues in this current of Folk/Americana with the added movement of ambient electro in some songs and unapologetic groove in others. HuDost released 'Our Words Will Be Louder', the album opener, as a means to encourage people to take positive action by voting in the 2020 election. Some of the song's video cameos include Jars of Clay, The Accidentals, Christie Lenée, Kevin Clash (Elmo), Kevin Hearn (from the Barenaked Ladies), Cy Curnin (from The FIXX), GangstaGrass, Alana Bridgewater, Nawal, Hymn for Her, Jai Uttal, and more. Watch Here HuDost's music is a powerful voice for life's journey and discovery. It is through music that the losses and gains, pains and triumphs, and excruciating beauty of life can be given a voice of empathy. Both critics and fans have said time and time again that the music of HuDost is this very expression. We want to hear from you! Interview with The Brothers Koren and Daybreaker
We had the pleasure of interviewing The Brothers Koren with Daybreaker over Zoom video!! The Daybreaker community releases 'Joy Generation' a collaboration with ace songwriters The Brothers Koren! 'Joy Generation' is a unique and inspiring song crowd-sourced in real-time during a creative jam session by 350 members of the Daybreaker community. In case you haven't heard, Daybreaker is one of the most popular and innovative organizations in the wellness and dance space, fusing yoga and meditation with next-level dance events in unique spaces around the world. They have toured arenas with Oprah and been featured by The Today Show, New York Times, Mashable, Elle, WSJ, Buzzfeed, and Vice, and partnered with Nike, Samsung, AMEX, and more. They have collaborated on events with artists like Gloria Estefan, Boyz II Men, SOFI TUKKER, Above & Beyond, Dionne Warwick, and more. The never before attempted song-writing method resulted in 'Joy Generation', a song that recalls the most epic and exuberant moments of Mumford And Sons, MGMT and The Polyphonic Spree, and yet is so much more, expressing the relief and sense of communion that is balm for these times. In March 2020 we began a new experiment hosting dance parties from our living room. We ended up serving over 200K people in 112 countries to dance and invite joy into their homes during the height of the pandemic when spirits needed it the most. We asked our community members to stick around after to write our new Daybreaker anthem with us. 350+ community members stayed to attempt something never done before: to lace together a song while miles apart, expressing the palpable anticipation of a return to IRL. We longed for an anthem that would take us out of the darkness and into a new more hopeful generation. We sat down in front of our little cameras, intent to harmoniously surface verses about the start of a new cultural Renaissance. The Brothers Koren masterfully shepherded us through the process of co-creating the song. Someone would spontaneously unmute themselves and provide a note, then another, and another: ideas. phrases, lyrics floated across the web. We jammed, we cried, we laughed...And then suddenly, we had an anthem, freeing and naming us: The Joy Generation.' We want to hear from you! Rolling Stone 500
In the mid-2000s, few people were more famous than Britney Spears. But as she began to stumble in her personal life, the price of the public's fascination was more than just a few nasty late-night jokes. Paparazzi swarmed Spears' home and her family, turning the singer into a tabloid punching bag. But when you're a platinum-selling pop princess, the show goes on even when you desperately need an intermission. In the midst of madness, Spears began recording an album that would become her defining statement,2007's Blackout. Rolling Stone's 500 GreatestAlbums revisits the album at a time when Spears' music — and the raw treatment she received from the public and the press — is being revisited and rethought in a big way. Collaborators and friends, from the A&R rep who was one of Spears' closest allies to the producers who crafted visceral hits like"Piece of Me," tell the story of how Spears' made classic songs in the eye of a hurricane. The result was an album that stood as a middle finger to Spears 'critics and established a dark, danceable sound that influenced pop for years to come. Be sure to tune in on Amazon. Interview with VRSTY
We had the pleasure of interviewing VRSTY over Zoom video! New York City-based collective VRSTY (pronounced "Varsity") — Joey Varela [vocals], Javy Dorrejo [bass], Chris Cody [drums], and Paul Gregory [guitar] — recently dropped their new album Welcome Home via Spinefarm. The band recently shared the lyric video for the new single "Finesse" (Feat. Notions). Watch and listen to the confident and rowdy track here. 'Finesse' was a fun process," Varela recalls about the genesis and back story of the track. "I think I wrote this song about two years ago and re-wrote it about three more times before scrapping it. Something always brought me back to it, though, and it was worth it, since it ended up making the record." He opens up about the track's deeper meaning, saying, "The song itself is about finding all of my heartaches and faults to be a blessing in disguise. Sure, everything hurts at the time, but it has all made me stronger. It has also made me a little crazier. Crazy is good, though." Varela, an admitted fan of Notions, connected with the artist online and that's how this collaboration was born. "Over the years, I watched him develop into this incredible artist and I always told myself, 'The day I get to do a full length, he ABSOLUTELY needs to be on it' And here we are. I clearly couldn't have chosen a better artist to feature on this song." Notions adds another layer of straight up vibe to this hard-hitting, album-opening song. Welcome Home is the band's debut full length for the label and follows last year's breakthrough Cloud City EP, which has accumulated six million streams in less than a year and yielded the head-turning singles "Shameless" and "Massive." The latter was the most played on SiriusXM's Octane for two weeks in a row in late 2020. VRSTY have perfected their seamless and fearless cross-pollination of metallic grooves and R&B-influenced, after midnight vocal swagger on this 14-track offering. VRSTY aren't just offering their own take on a genre; they have authored a fusion style that is entirely their own. We want to hear from you! Heaven in Hiding is an outstanding collection of 13 songs. With an organic approach to honest creativeness, the group delivers an album where each song stands out in character and storytelling, while still connected in a larger concept.
