Interview with Katelyn Tarver
We had the pleasure of interviewing Katelyn Tarver over Zoom video! Los Angeles-via-Georgia singer/songwriter Katelyn Tarver recently released her stunningly beautiful new album Subject To Change. Katelyn Tarver also shares the all-too-relatable video for "Year From Now," a folk-infused meditation on the healing power of time. The perfect follow-up to previews singles "Hurt Like That" (premiered with Under the Radar and featured on Spotify's New Music Friday & BBC Radio 1's Best New Pop), "Nicer" (premiered with Atwood Magazine), "All Our Friends Are Splitting Up" (premiered on Flaunt Magazine) and "Shit Happens." Tarver recently performed the single during her Paste session here, as well. On Subject to Change, she emerges as the rare kind of artist capable of capturing the most painful truths through her willingness to bare all with her lyrics, all wrapped up in impossibly gorgeous pop songs. With a record of media acclaim from the likes of NPR, Billboard, SPIN, GRAMMY.com, Earmilk, The Guardian and American Songwriter and millions of followers, on her new album, Tarver explores the complexities that come with navigating life through your 20s and 30s. With lyrics that capture a bracing specificity that strikes every raw nerve, she documents a turbulent period in her recent past, shedding light on all the grief, confusion, and a lost sense of self. Infinitely brightened by her radiant voice, the result is the musical equivalent of a brutally honest conversation with a close friend - one that leaves you undeniably rattled but with a renewed clarity and deeper understanding of your own chaotic heart. Interview with Nathan Gray of BoySetsFire // Nathan Gray & The Iron Roses
We had the pleasure of interviewing Nathan Gray of Nathan Gray & The Iron Roses, and BoySetsFire over Zoom video! In support of the new record, Rebel Songs, melodic alt-punk band Nathan Gray & The Iron Roses has just announced a 20-date US tour with BlackGuyFawkes. Kicking off on February 25, 2022 in Providence, RI, the tour winds its way west making several stops out to Milwaukee, WI (3/7), Chicago, IL (3/9), back east with a show in Brooklyn, NY (3/16), and ending in Philadelphia, PA on March 18th. With nearly two years absent from the road, the prospect of upcoming tour dates thrills frontman Nathan Gray. "It's the connection that I am most excited about," he smiles. "Any time I am not on the road, there is an intense void in my life because being on stage is like my personal therapy couch. There is a very palpable energy exchange that happens within live music. It's very symbiotic - I need my audience as much as they need me! Not being able to tour for so long was a real challenge for me to stay above the darkness mentally - that's why I wrote the album that I did!" Refusing to allow this confinement due to COVID to block his creativity, Gray and band turned inward to music and created one of their most anthemic and passionate albums to date. Fired up by both the isolation as well as in response to the division caused by the previous administration, they created a stellar album of fists-raised rallying cries. While the tempo and delivery of his current music may not be as aggressively rapid as his output of his hardcore roots in BoySetsFire, the passion and conviction is still very much alive in the alternative Rebel Songs. The 12 track album was produced by Brian McTernan (Thrice, Hot Water Music, Circa Survive) and radiates the roaring renegade energy that the title suggests. We want to hear from you! Interview with Life on Planets
We had the pleasure of interviewing Life on Planets over Zoom video! House music has seen a reinvigoration in recent years via progressive creatives seeking to fuse classic disco, soul, funk and R&B with modern electronic sensibilities meant to relate to dance floors everywhere. At the forefront, artists like Walker & Royce have strove to lead this diverting wave of music via their label Rules Don't Apply. For its latest release, the imprint joins forces with true-blue creative Life on Planets. Explore wayfaring creativity and full-fledged euphoria via the Nomad Lyfe EP, out NOW. Nomad Lyfe is a two-sided EP featuring vocal led, dynamic dancefloor tracks. The project leads with the title track, which opens behind funky, static basslines. "Don't know where I'm about to stay tonight - all I know is Imma be alright" sets the tone for a DIY adventure in sound and intention. The lyrics proffers listeners to find independence in living their "Nomad Lyfe," paralleled by freewheeling creativity experienced in the production. "UDidIt2Urself" is the B-side track on the EP - where fans will find more R&B-enthused production accented by melodic elements and dazzling arps. The project was written in Baltimore - Life was living in an old row-house run by art collective, The Holy Underground. Paired with samples and virtual synthes, the producer used pitched down guitar and vocals recorded in his bedroom to create the final product. This accents his performance setup, which is a hybrid of DJ/live sets that include singing, guitar and spinning a wide array of influences. Most recently, he brought this to life on the road at Dirtybird Campout, playing live with Lubelski. We want to hear from you! Interview with Sam Short
We had the pleasure of interviewing Sam Short over Zoom video! After sharing a sentimental video of the single on Tik Tok, everyone fell in love with Sam Short's ability to truly empathize through music in her debut single "Already Mine" (out now!)When the people you love go through tough times, you sometimes wish to take on that pain for them. For Oregon-born and Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Sam Short, that feeling of empathy sees no boundaries. Lucky for the world, Sam set out to support her best friend through heartbreak by turning those tough feelings into a song. "Already Mine" not only brought her bestie some solace, but the infectious pop ballad seemingly has the capability of healing the masses. With over millions of views on multiple videos of the song and growing, Sam captured the moment of her best friend first hearing the masterpiece and posted it on TikTok, and the need that we all shared for the full song is loud and clear. Since sharing the song, Short has grown a loyal fan-base, amassing over 265K+ TikTok followers and videos acquiring over 30M+ views in only a few months. A storyteller by nature, Sam has made it her mission to use both her voice and her pen as means of establishing her identity in today's layered and dynamic music industry. With classical vocal/piano training, Sam set her sights on Los Angeles to pursue her passions. Here, she not only dialed in on her musical talents but more importantly she found a family in her friendships. The biggest accomplishment in her music journey thus far is not her growing metrics or mastery of the craft, but rather her ability to deeply connect with the people around her. For Sam, that's what music is. Not a perfectly refined tune or a carefully calculated chorus, but rather a gift you give to the people you love most to show them that they are heard, they matter, and that they inspire art. Sam understands just how much music can make people feel less alone. Whether you're hitting the high-note in your jam session or turning up your headphone volume to tune out the rest of the world, music is a medium of expression and understanding. "Already Mine" speaks to the power of empathy in music, and the applause already garnered is a testament to that. Just as Sam's best friend shed a tear when she first heard the song, the masses on the other side of the screen did as well. Sam's music mends heartbreaks, and her ability to make people truly feel heard is her greatest gift as both an artist and as a person. We want to hear from you! Interview with Penny and Sparrow
We had the pleasure of interviewing Penny and Sparrow over Zoom video! "Olly olly oxen free!" If you ever played hide-and-go-seek or capture the flag growing up, odds are good that you've shouted these words into the hot summer night, beckoning your unseen comrades out of their hiding places in exchange for safe passage home. But what does it actually mean? The origins of the phrase are murky, with variations existing in multiple languages over the centuries. Some trace it back to the German "alle, alle, auch sind frei," which roughly translates to "all, all, also are free." Others attribute it to a mix of French and Dutch, which would yield the similar "go, go, come in free." For Andy Baxter and Kyle Jahnke—the musical duo better known as Penny and Sparrow—the phrase spoke to something far deeper than a children's game, though, something profoundly existential. Written and recorded over the past year, Olly Olly is a work of liberation and revelation, a full-throated embrace of the self from a band that's committed to leaving no stone unturned in their tireless quest for actualization. The songs here are fearless and introspective, embracing growth and change as they reckon with desire, intimacy, doubt, and regret, and the arrangements are similarly bold and thoughtful, augmenting the duo's rich, hypnotic brand of chamber folk with electronic flourishes and R&B grooves. Baxter and Jahnke produced Olly Olly themselves, working on their own without an outside collaborator for the first time, and the result is the purest, most authentic act of artistic self-expression the pair have ever achieved. Stuck at home with nothing but time on his hands, Jahnke leaned into bedroom pop, R&B, and hip-hop for sonic inspiration, pushing his boundaries in an attempt to forge new sounds that went against expectations. There was a certain amount of contrarianism at play (tell him you can't write a folk song over a trap beat and he'd write you a folk song over a trap beat), but more than that, Jahnke was engaged in a conscious attempt to rewrite his own neural pathways, to step out of the invisible boxes that had bound him for much of his life. Baxter took a similar approach within his lyrics, which he worked on at home in Florence, AL, responding to Jahnke's melodic cues by writing with new tones and modes of voice. In the end, that's what Olly Olly is all about: finding new ways to use language and melody as acts of emancipation and self-discovery. We want to hear from you! Interview with LilyIsThatYou
We had the pleasure of interviewing Lilyisthatyou over Zoom video! Toronto pop provocateur Lilyisthatyou celebrates her signing to Warner Records with her major-label debut single "Party 22." A breakup anthem that doubles as a post-pandemic party jam, the propulsive bop finds the singer born Lily Davies looking for salvation in the club. "Party 22" allows Lily to let loose. "Imma party like it's 2022," she chants defiantly on the explosive chorus. "Imma shake off every last thought of you." It turns out, "Party 22" is the result of quarantine-induced reflection. "I've always found nightlife as an opportunity to let go," Lily says. "To release a lot of energy that I had been directing towards something negative." She set out to make a floor-filler for a post-COVID world, adding, "I want to create anthems people will remember from the year the world really came back to life." With references to bottles and bathroom stalls, "Party 22" picks up where her self-released viral hit "FMRN" left off. An acronym for "Fuck Me Right Now," Lily's sex-positive single caused a stir on TikTok, where it amassed more than 1 million views in 24 hours before being taken down for being too explicit. "FMRN" quickly became a streaming sensation. Since its release, the unapologetic song has amassed over 40 million streams across platforms. Pop has been Lily's calling from an early age. She began writing songs at 13 and received an AKG microphone from her father in 2016. With a rudimentary studio setup in her bedroom, the breakout artist became more serious about her craft. She achieved her first taste of virality on her own, but now with "Party 22," she's made it clear that, with backing from Warner Records and Marvin Alyas' Until Successful Management, Lilyisthatyou is headed for even bigger things. Interview with Paul Mayson
We had the pleasure of interviewing Paul Mayson over Zoom video! Entrenched in love of house music, the musical landscape in Paul Mayson's head is one rich in a commix of sounds and influences. From remaking Cher's iconic track 'Believe' together with GRAMMY nominated singer/songwriter Saint Sinner to dropping his soulful house anthem 'Can't Trust The Way I Feel', the Dutch DJ/Producer now takes listeners on a timeless funk-filled voyage with his latest single 'Don't Let Me Down', featuring UK singer/songwriter Zac Pajak at the helm on vocals. The track incorporates delicate house grooves, warm chords and soulful samples, whilst Mayson pushes Zac out of his pop comfort zone to achieve a resounding performance from the gifted singer. It's a delectable track with brilliant production touches that contribute to 'Don't Let Me Down', perhaps being Paul's most superior dance record after signing with Sony Music and embarking on a new chapter in 2021. Mayson's early years in the studio were spent co-producing and co-writing for American pop and hip-hop artists such as Yelawolf, Bone Thugs-n-Harmony and Far East Movement. Today he is dedicated to sharing his love for house music and is deep into music discovery and crate digging, constantly seeking out new ideas and sounds from old records and fusing genres and styles. Stripping it back to its core and unpicking everything with sampling and programming at the heart of his music, Mayson's creative exploration is paying off. He recently got picked up by MTV to become their MTV Push Artist of the month for August and positioned himself as one of the most exciting and innovative dance music talents out of The Netherlands right now. Since releasing his debut single 'Again' in 2019, Zac Pajak's music has led him to perform live shows everywhere from Glastonbury to London's Roundhouse and contribute to hit music for artists as diverse as Major Lazer, Raye and McFly and continue to deliver his own brilliantly observed, expressive releases. Paul Mayson & Zac Pajak's 'Don't Let Me Down' is out now via Sony Music. We want to hear from you! Interview with Will Putney of Fit For An Autopsy
We had the pleasure of interviewing Will Putney of Fit For An Autopsy over Zoom video! New Jersey six-piece FIT FOR AN AUTOPSY — Joseph Badolato [vocals], Patrick Sheridan [guitar], Timothy Howley [guitar], Will Putney [guitar], Peter Blue Spinazola [bass], and Josean Orta Martinez [drums] — just released their sixth album, Oh What the Future Holds, via Nuclear Blast. The band has also shared the video for "Two Towers." "Conceptually, 'Two Towers' is an abstract story which follows the journey of your past self and future self, and the forces that pull them apart," the band explains. "Realizing the impossible concept of them meeting, one is faced with the reality of accepting the things you cannot change. It's a little out of the box for us, but it was challenging and fun to create a unique song for the record. Shout out to director Frankie Nasso and his team for the animated video that brought this story to life." FFAA returned to the road on a headline U.S. tour, which kicked off on January 5. The band and tour will certainly add a hefty dose of death metal to your winter doldrums. The trek began in Columbus, Ohio, and runs through February 12 in New York City. All dates are below. Enterprise Earth, Ingested, Signs of the Swarm, and Great American Ghost will also appear. We want to hear from you!
