Interview with Tuelo
We had the pleasure of interviewing Tuelo over Zoom video! Tuelo Minah (stage name simply Tuelo) released 'The Life of Margaret Cornelius', not only her debut full-length album, but also a recounting of a journey that has taken the artful South African rocker from her home and all over the globe in search of her own personal corner of the world. From a childhood growing up on a remote farm amid the political upheaval during the end South Africa's apartheid, to venturing alone to New York City at age 17 to pursue music, to writing in Ireland, composing in Turkey & Germany, and heading back to NYC & South Africa near the start of the pandemic to finish the record and then filming music videos in Colombia, 'The Life of Margaret Cornelius' is a raw and powerful glimpse into the creative mind of one of rock's most exciting new artists. Once called "New York's Best Singer (and the World's)" by Huff Post while AfroPunk described her performances as "an inspiring and spiritual experience", Tuelo's four-year journey to create this collection has resulted in an album that is a "mesmerizing cross-cultural mashup of punk, rock, soul and the Afro strains of her homeland" (Magnet Magazine). A mystical, soulful and sometimes haunting rock record, Tuelo's debut album uses her powerhouse and uniquely stirring vocals to create a soulful wave of art-rock inspired by the great traditions of South African protest music and the polyrhythms and tonalities of her native Tswana and Khoikhoi tribes. Two videos have rolled out leading up to the album ("Saint Margaret" & "Canary") with several others to come, all continuing a singular narrative of rising, falling and discovering one's self worth. Also recently announced is a collection of artwork NFTs that Tuelo has made herself including the album cover and single artwork for every track on the album. Just listening to "Happier" (a punk-infused reflection on compounded African immigrant issues and freeing herself of burdens of conforming), "Trouble" (a beautiful swaying plea for her troubles to leave her), and "Killer" (a spacey slice of psychedelia and also the first full song Tuelo ever wrote) exemplifies the breadth of a powerful new talent injecting the indie rock scene with a fresh, insightful perspective. Tuelo also stares squarely and unafraid in the face of those who don't see a woman of color inhabiting the current rock landscape, saying "I can't wait to show the world what music can do, how music can be, that rock can be elevated, and that black people who started it have a place here." Interview with Erika Tham
We had the pleasure of interviewing Erika Tham over Zoom video! LA-based pop/R&B singer-songwriter and actress Erika Tham makes a fiery entrance this year with new single "Shhh" and premieres the sultry coinciding Patrick Wilcox-directed video today. Co-written with GRAMMY-nominated producers Deion Gill (Kelly Rowland, Miguel, Playboi Carti, Usher) and Major Myjah (Chris Brown, J.Cole, Ty Dolla $ign), the tongue-in-cheek track demonstrates Erika's lyrical wit and seductive flow as she puts every mansplaining fuckboy firmly in their place. Paying homage to the unapologetic female pop stars of the '90s, "Shhh" is a loose spin off Shania Twain's 1997 megahit "That Don't Impress Me Much" and laced with alluring Asian string instrumentation against a modern R&B production. "Shhh" is the follow up to Erika Tham's 2021 debut release "Admit It" also co-written with Deion Gill and Major Myjah. The track landed on Spotify's 'Fresh Finds: The Wave' and received positive praise from Earmilk, HollywoodLife, Noctis Magazine, Ones To Watch, Raydar Magazine, Viper Magazine, Wonderland, among others. The acoustic ballad version, which arrived with a video this past November, featured Brian Kennedy (Rihanna, Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Clarkson) on the piano and grabbed the attention of Teen Vogue who listed it as their "pick for Best New Music Friday." A beautifully blended mix of four nationalities—her father is Chinese-Malaysian and a mother is Dutch/Ukrainian-Canadian—Erika Tham is a stunning representation of global beauty and a powerhouse singer, songwriter, and actor with the innate ability to reach a worldwide audience with her sultry, sophisticated, and nuanced pop vocals. With talent radiating from her every pore, Erika is a performer at heart. She is a natural on stage who is inspired by the phrasing and cadences in rap songs, but also the orchestral and melodic music of the Disney renaissance era. Following an outstanding acting career as a teen, where she starred as Corki in Nickelodeon's 'Make It Pop' (executive produced by Nick Cannon) and appeared in other television shows including the Disney Channel original movie 'Kim Possible' and FOX's 'Star', Erika realized that her true passion and love were with music. She is most at home in the studio, and music is her creative outlet. Her yearning and desire to find where she fit in and belonged, gave her the strength and sense of purpose to create, to envision, and to elevate the ideas, emotions, and sounds that run rampant through her music. Interview with The O'My's
We had the pleasure of interviewing The O'My's over Zoom video! Soulful Chicago-based alt-R&B act The O'My's persevere through love and loss on new EP No Swimming out now via ADA / Warner Music Group. Each song unpacks the complexity of life's highs and lows through the lens of Maceo Vidal-Haymes and Nick Hennessey's personal experiences living in isolation and learning from one another. Inspired by the arts and music that has shaped them, the duo manifested each track on the project in their newly built studio during the pandemic. With community at the forefront of everything they do, the EP captures the heart and strength of their beloved city like no other. While a nod to the various tokens of their hometown, they're able to provide a comforting universal message for listeners anywhere in the world. The new era of music first came to fruition in 2020. They would then spend the next year creating multiple productions for the song and with each rewrite Vidal-Haymes and Hennessey pushed their boundaries to the next level. Surviving through the pandemic with the power of music, the two challenged themselves with unfiltered artistic expressions that served as a savior. Vidal-Haymes says their new music "incorporates what we have learned as growing producers, writers, and men but at its core it's what has always made The O'My's." About The O'My's: Channeling their experiences and perspective into soulful music, The O'My's grabs listeners from the very first note. Made up of vocalist-guitarist Maceo Vidal-Haymes and classically trained instrumentalist Nick Hennessey, they have etched themselves into Chicago's music scene through consistency and collaboration. Together they produce a rich tapestry of sound, pulling from a wide range of genres, decades and emotions, and have additionally linked up with a wealth of notable talent including Chance the Rapper, Noname, Saba, Ab-Soul, Pink Siifu, ZZ Ward, and Carter Lang (Omar Apollo, SZA). Their 2018 full length album Tomorrow was formative to their launch and 2019's EP Above Ground saw the band expanding on the sonics explored in its precursor. Ten years and tens of millions of streams later, The O'My's have honed their one-of-a-kind sound while cultivating an impassioned fanbase and positive praise from media critics. To date, they've secured coverage from the likes of Billboard, Chicago Reader, Chicago Tribune, Complex, The FADER, Highsnobiety, Pitchfork, among others, and Rolling Stone dubbed them 'Artist[s] You Need To Know.' Interview with Sidney Bird
We had the pleasure of interviewing Sidney Brid over Zoom video! Sidney Bird is a southwestern darling making a name for herself in New York City. Born and raised in Arizona, Bird holds her own in the western pop scene, alongside artists like Kacey Musgraves and Leon Bridges. A true crossover act, she feels a strong creative impulse when home in Arizona, writing all of her songs there before fleshing them out with producers in Brooklyn. "I grew up listening to Barenaked Ladies, Norah Jones, Joni Mitchell," says Bird. "Then became obsessed with Katy Perry, Britney Spears––all the popstars." Bird's background in comedy and musical theater fuels a deep love for world-building and storytelling: "Sometimes I feel like I'm playing characters through my music, using them as a vehicle to express honest and genuine feelings." Her 2020 debut album "Bad Timing," featuring singles like "Kisses" and "Wild," has garnered over 1.7 million combined streams to date. In 2021, Bird followed up with her EP "Big Heart," debuting the project live at Rockwood Music Hall at the end of the year. With a wealth of music ready for release and a dedicated community of listeners, Bird is well-positioned to make 2022 her year. Sidney is super excited to share her new single "Brooklyn Baby" on February 22nd! Here's what she had to say about it: "I wrote Brooklyn Baby a couple days after moving to New York. I felt so grown up in my new apartment, but part of me also felt super scared of how 'old' I was getting. I sat down with my guitar and wrote this song; it's about self reflection and growing up" We want to hear from you! Interview with Indii G
We had the pleasure of interviewing Indii G over Zoom video! Multi-talented, lo-fi hip-hop rapper, Indii G shares his new standout track, "Hampton." Beaming with instrumental elements, silvery vocals with layered cooing backup and an orchestral outro, "Hampton" stands out as a reach into the bedroom pop/indie pipeline. An indie pop flow coupled with earworm hooks, Indii G. is not to be missed on mending the history in his relationships. "It's never too late to fix any mistakes you've made in the past. Keep trying and don't give up, it gets better," explains Indii. A tale of overreaction and growing from experience, heartache is an all too familiar feeling within "Hampton." "It's about rekindling a lost flame; looking back on my mistakes with this person, realizing how we've grown from it and how we've come back stronger." Alongside the track, Indii shares the video directed by Dylan Stein. "This is probably my favorite video I've done so far! I think every visual element from the background dancer to the lottery ticket explosion perfectly captures the feel of the song," adds Indii. "Dylan did an excellent job executing the concept, and even tho it started to get pretty cold on that rooftop, I definitely had a blast on set filming it!" A modest rapper on the rise, citing collabs with Powfu and Sadboyprolific Indii G. started making music as a diary, putting his feelings into fruit for hip-hop heads and DIY chillwave enthusiasts alike. With more than a million streams on Spotify, the Louisiana native is building momentum with his velvety echoed layers, infectious beats and gentle, harmonic vocals. Since his start in 2016, his diary has blossomed into an EP and over a dozen singles including "Secrets," "Story's End," "Drifting" and "Cherry Blossom." We want to hear from you! Interview with Eric Krasno
We had the pleasure of interviewing Eric Krasno over Zoom video! The idea of "losing yourself" may seem negative, but to Grammy-award winning guitarist Eric Krasno, the phrase has a deeper meaning. Featuring head-nodding handclaps, horns from Jazz Mafia, and a funkified bass line drive, Krasno's new single "Lost Myself". Featured on his new solo album, 'Always' is filled with songs like "Lost Myself," which consecrate, commend, and celebrates the permanence of family. On 'Always' – across ten tracks with inimitable instrumentation, eloquent songcraft, and raw honesty – the Soulive and Lettuce co-founder, singer, multi-instrumentalist, and two-time GRAMMY® Award-winning songwriter-producer defines himself as not only an artist, but also as a husband, father, and man. "Lost Myself" follows the release of recent singles like "Silence," about the emotional havoc that a lack of communication can wreak on the human psyche, and "Alone Together," about the beauty that can be created between two people in solitude. Something of a musical journeyman, Krasno's extensive catalog comprises three solo albums, four Lettuce albums, twelve Soulive albums, and production and/or songwriting for Norah Jones, Robert Randolph, Pretty Lights, Talib Kweli, 50 Cent, Aaron Neville, and Allen Stone. As a dynamic performer, he's shared stages with Rolling Stones, Dave Matthews Band, John Mayer, and The Roots. Out of seven nominations, he picked up two GRAMMY® Awards for his role as a songwriter and guitarist on Tedeschi Trucks Band's 'Revelator' and guitarist on Derek Trucks Band's 'Already Free.' But as the Global Pandemic changed the world's plans, he found himself thinking a lot and writing just as much. At the suggestion of old Lettuce bandmate Adam Deitch, he connected with musician and producer Otis McDonald and collaborated on a version of Bob Dylan's "The Man In Me," a song that had taken on a deeper significance for Krasno in recent years. Recording first virtually and then at the Bay Area's legendary Hyde Street Studios, famous for 2Pac, Grateful Dead, and Digital Underground, Krasno and McDonald tapped into a shared spirit as co-producers, ultimately forming Eric Krasno & The Assembly with Otis on bass, Wil Blades on keys and organ, Curtis Kelly on drums, and James VIII on guitar and vocals. In the end, Krasno welcomes everyone to be a part of his family on 'Always We want to hear from you! Interview with Kate Stewart
We had the pleasure of interviewing Kate Stewart over Zoom video! Kate Stewart unleashes her new music, debuting a mesmerizing track of confidence, freedom, female empowerment, and a little bit of resentment, in the new single, "Hate You" – out via The Orchard and Sony Music. Kate Stewart is the vocalist we have all been waiting for. Her 2022 debut single "Hate You", a sharp declaration of moving on, pushes empowerment within yourself and within female comradery. "Hate You'' is the first release off her upcoming EP, 'You Had To Be There', which serves as the first part of an entire collection of music catharsis and ignites that intricate flame inside you when the music hits just right. About Kate Stewart Kate Stewart was born and raised in Maida Vale in West London. She grew up in an artistic family: her father is an entertainer, her mother a dancer, and a brother who is a globally recognized and respected music producer and songwriter. It's no surprise she followed in their footsteps. Kate grew up doing musical theater and went to stage school in Chiswick, which was where she discovered her passion for the stage. The ultimate discovery was that as well as realizing the magnitude of her vocalist capabilities and strength, she was deeply in love with singing and moved forward with working as a recording artist. Growing up she loved the timeless female icons; Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, Mariah Carey. They heavily inspired her earlier music and were the catalysts for her later love for music. "Hate You" gives a hypnotic and steady release of emotions, taking us through the journey from the end of a relationship to finding empowerment within yourself. It is the musical alignment to that feeling of being "calm and collected" when reaching a place of truth and conviction, elated realization and self love. Kate Stewart gives the gift of those classic, soothing vocals intertwined with a flavor that feels like it's made for today's music explorers and lovers. We want to hear from you! Interview with Royal & the Serpent
We had the pleasure of interviewing Royal & the Serpent over Zoom video! RIAA certified Gold, LA singer/songwriter Royal & the Serpent has released her highly anticipated EP IF I DIED WOULD ANYONE CARE. The pop punk infused project is streaming now. IF I DIED WOULD ANYONE CARE features recent singles "PHUCKBOI REJECTS" and "I'M NOT SORRY" as well as four brand new tracks including "BETTER," a shout-out-along-worthy anthem which fans have been eagerly awaiting since Royal first performed it live on tour. BETTER's opening lines perfectly embody the EP's ultra vivid confession ("I haven't washed my hair in two weeks/Been getting mental-health texts from my friends to check if I'm alright/They never show this shit in movies"). As the six-track project unfolds, Royal explores everything from anxiety and lack of self-worth to the brutal pain of unrequited love, ultimately arriving at the defiant self-acceptance of "I'M NOT SORRY." "That's my 'I don't give a fuck anymore' song,'" she notes. "It's me deciding I'm just gonna be who I am, and walk through this world without caring what other people think." True to the wild complexity that's always animated her music, the sonic landscape of IF I DIED WOULD ANYONE CARE shifts from frenetic and blistering to moody and delicate, tapping into such disparate genres as hyperpop, pop-punk, and experimental alt-rock. And as Royal reveals, that unrestrained sound reflects a heightened confidence in her artistry—as well as a newfound clarity on her overall mission. The 6-track project follows her viral hit, and Atlantic Records debut, "Overwhelmed," which spent 22 weeks on Billboard's Alternative Airplay chart and is now RIAA- certified gold. Recently named one of SiriusXM's class of 2021, Royal & the Serpent is an acclaimed live performer, wrapping her first cross-America this fall. Interview with Nia Kay
We had the pleasure of interviewing Nia Kay over Zoom video! Chicago rapper and rising star, Nia Kay recently released her new video titled, "Go Best Friend". With more than 6.9 million fans on Facebook and almost 1.6 million followers on Instagram, Nia released this new single on the heels of the successful debut of her song "Ignored," which ranked #2 on the BET Jams Fresh Face Friday. In addition to the release of "Go Best Friend," Nia has stepped up as an ambassador for JDRF, the leading global type 1 diabetes (T1D) non-profit. In this new role, she's joining efforts with the organization to educate the public about the life-threatening autoimmune disease and the importance of early detection, which can help people avoid severe conditions at the onset of the disease and ultimately saves lives. Growing up with T1D and overcoming the daily highs and lows of the disease has fueled Nia's passion for raising awareness and inspiring other T1D youth that they too can achieve their dreams. The "Go Best Friend" music video features a clip and end-card of Nia managing her T1D using an insulin pen, and information about the JDRF T1Detect screening education and awareness program. On January 13, 2022, Nia performed at an intimate event in her hometown of Chicago to celebrate the launch of her new music video "Go Best Friend," and to raise awareness for T1D. Images and footage from the event were captured by Shutterstock, a creative platform dedicated to supporting talented artists across all genres, with a commitment to advancing philanthropic causes. About Type 1 Diabetes (T1D): T1D is a chronic, life-threatening autoimmune disease that can strike children and adults at any age. It requires rigorous 24/7 monitoring of blood glucose levels—even overnight—to avoid potentially lethal highs and lows in blood sugar, as well as other devastating complications like kidney, eye and nerve diseases. While its causes are not yet entirely understood, scientists believe that both genetic factors and environmental triggers are involved. Its onset is sudden and is not related to diet or lifestyle. In T1D, the body's immune system destroys cells in the pancreas that produce insulin, meaning the body produces little to no insulin to regulate blood sugar and get energy from food. There is nothing you can do to prevent T1D, and—at present—nothing you can do to get rid of it. We want to hear from you! Interview with Julianna Joy
We had the pleasure of interviewing Julianna Joy over Zoom video! Due out in 2022, the prodigious pop singer-songwriter's EP Garden of Eden sits in the crosshairs of youthful innocence and profundity beyond her years. Its seven songs span escapist dance bops and contemplative ballads, taking musical influence from alternative rock, pop, classic rock, and psychedelia. Co-written with Grammy-nominated producer Teddy Geiger (Shawn Mendes, Maroon 5, Lizzo), Garden of Edenincorporates these styles into an impressively uniform sound. Joy creditsGeiger's abounding creativity and open-mindedness — not to mention her impressive roster of collaborators like Danny Parker, John Ryan, Mags Duval, Juan Ariza, and Evan Voytas — as a creative spark that helped expand her own artistry. Full of synth keyboard and percussion textures, layered with acoustic guitar strumming and electric guitar solos, sampled strings, jazzy basslines, and more, the musicality on Garden of Eden seems to reflect the emotional chaos of its songs: Joy only graduated high school in December 2019 before taking a leap of faith to move from the Chicago suburbs to Los Angeles and peruse music full-time. These themes present themselves throughout Garden of Eden. The hilarious "Teenage Boys," which was written in the same iconic studio where Fleetwood Mac recorded "Rumors", details Joy's frustrations in dating. "Prescriptions" truthfully describes the struggles of finding the best mental health regimen. "California," a haunting, yet uplifting ode to her new home, always sparks her synesthesia in hues of teal like the color of the water off the Pacific Coast Highway. While the songs on Garden of Edenhighlight Joy's growth and musical exploration, she's been a prolific writer since childhood. Having composed more than 200 songs in her teen years, she attended Grammy Camp in Los Angeles at age 15, where she studied music with industry professionals, fellow performers, producers, and instrumentalists. By the summer of 2019, Joy returned to LA to record her first EP, Cherries, which was released in February 2020. And thanks to the focal track, "Cherry Bomb" (which has been streamed almost 1.5 million times on Spotify), she's begun to lay the foundation for a loyal fan base across even more platforms — through Spotifyeditorial playlist placement (SALT) and Apple Music editorial placement (Breaking Singer/Song-writer) and several TikTok influencer playlists. Joy is currently signed to a publishing deal with Hipgnosis Songs. We want to hear from you!
