Interview with Thornhill

We had the pleasure of interviewing Thornhill over Zoom video. Propped up against their acclaimed 2019 debut album The Dark Pool, there's a profound new sense of clarity, vision and intention to be heard on Heroine. Where The Dark Pool touched fans with its mix of crushing riffage and atmospheric metalcore, this record finds Thornhill flexing their skills in the alternative and rock worlds, referencing a tapestry of sounds from the likes of Smashing Pumpkins and Red Hot Chili Peppers to Silverchair and Deftones. At the same time harking to flavours of modern metalcore, Thornhill ultimately want to showcase what can be made of heavy and rock music when there are no borders. Heroine does just this, and comes complete with elevated visuals and theatrics to match. Vocalist Jacob Charlton, who is also responsible for the band's styling and music video writing and direction, shares that part of his growth during the album's creation was finally nailing his own character and style as a vocalist and frontman, much like his performance idols such as Elvis, Justin Timberlake, and Gwen Stefani pioneered in their own ways. Awarded a laundry list of accolades including triple j's Feature Album and additions to some Best of The Year lists with its 2019 release, The Dark Pool also garnered nominations including Best International Breakthrough Artist at the 2020 Heavy Music Awards, and Best Independent Heavy Album/EP at the 2020 AIR Awards. The album has amassed over 32 million streams and 3 million YouTube views on its music video. We want to hear from you! Interview with Gavin Haley

We had the pleasure of interviewing Gavin Haley over Zoom video! Throughout an often unbelievable journey, Gavin Haley gained experience, wisdom, and truth from every trial, tribulation, and triumph and applied it all to his music. The trip brought the Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist from competitive athletics and health struggles through various relationships and understanding his unconventional upbringing, split between homeschooling and churchgoing in Louisville, Kentucky. Gavin Haley recently wrapped up a tour with Tate McRae, and has a new album out entitled "i hate you, Don't Leave Me" that was co-produced by Skylar Mones (Dua Lipa, Kesha) and Nick Bailey (Demi Lovato, Machine Gun Kelly). The project includes Haley's new single "Cliche". Gavin Haley's 2019 debut EP Long Game yielded the fan favorite anthem, "The Way I Am" feat. Ella Vos, amassing over 50 million streams. The 2020 follow-up Unfolding boasted "Tati" feat. Yung Pinch, which caught the attention of blink-182's Travis Barker, who contributed a scorching remix. Interview with BLKBOK

We had the pleasure of interviewing BLKBOK over Zoom video. Neoclassical pianist and Detroit native BLKBOK is set to soundtrack this year's Juneteenth celebrations with the deluxe version of his debut album 'Black Book'. Arriving on June 17 via icons+giants, 'Black Book DLUX' is a timely natural continuation of BLKBOK's critically-acclaimed debut as a composer, reflecting on pertinent social issues, with counterpoints, and sustaining a dialogue through his thought-provoking pieces. The package includes 11 new interstitial poems woven throughout the album, written and narrated by award-winning Jamaican poet Lauren Delapenha. Additionally, it features two new powerful singles "Kendrick + Karine" and "Forgotten Girls." While touring the world as a pianist or musical director with the likes of Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Demi Lovato, Timbaland and John Mayer, BLKBOK spent his private time composing his own original material, music that was inspired by his love of hip-hop and classical music. When the pandemic set in and touring came to a halt, he finalized these compositions which led to getting signed by icons+giants/WMG and releasing his first body of solo work, last year's 'Black Book.' BLKBOK was inspired to create 'Black Book' as a tribute to the movie 'Green Book' and the courageous story of pianist/composer Don Shirley, whose trailblazing spirit helped open the door for black classical pianists of which there remains too few. The largely instrumental album features a standout vocal collaboration with Hamilton's Tony and Grammy Award-winning Renée Elise Goldsberry on "My Life." Provocative singles like "George Floyd and the Struggle for Equality," "November 7th 2020" and "Michelle's First Day At The White House" offer listeners unique perspectives of the social climate that we live in, and an opportunity to hear BLKBOK's reflections of the world through the keys of the piano. Since releasing his debut album, BLKBOK has taken to social media weekly, while developing new work in real-time and challenging the way we listen to classical music. A 21st century black pianist equally infatuated with rappers like Busta Rhymes and The Notorious B.I.G., as well as the classical greats like Debussy, Mozart, and Bach, BLKBOK has gone viral on TikTok with his riveting neoclassical TikTok covers of Cardi B and Kendrick Lamar. On Instagram, he hosts a monthly "What's Goin' On" social series, where he develops new songs related to current cultural milestones and events, and offers an open forum for fans to share their feelings and discuss social issues. Interview with TAROT

We had the pleasure of interviewing TAROT over Zoom video! Jordyn Benedict aka TAROT is a Nashville-based independent singer-songwriter who has transitioned her music career into the web3 space. The 24 year-old sold her first NFTs by minting 28 tokens everyday in the month of February — all of which contained a new song written, produced, mixed and mastered by Jordyn herself. She also sold a collection of 11 music video NFTs, 5 of which were sold during an appearance Jordyn made in a Twitter Space. With a modest following of 22k across her social platforms and less than 100k streams on Spotify, the female singer made over $7000 from songs that otherwise would have sat in her collection — all thanks to web3. Benedict is one of the few female music artists leading the way as an NFT creator in a very much male-dominated space. From her first NFT launch, she has been able to cultivate an organic and highly engaged audience of loyal fans and supporters whose NFTs will grow in value as she builds out her web3 ecosystem. "I felt like I had to prove myself coming into the web3 space," said Benedict. "Even on my hardest days, I realized my effort was going beyond myself. I was impacting other people in web3 — as small as my impact was, it's continuing to grow every single day. I'm connecting with real people and building the 1000 fan rule. You can look at an artist's stats, Spotify numbers, streams, etc., but how many people will actually show up to their shows? That's what this space allows independent artists to create on our own." Next up, she will be launching her crypto crowdfund campaign at the beginning of May, which will fund the release of her debut album, "Wake." We want to hear from you! Interview with Eloise Alterman

We had the pleasure of interviewing Eloise Alterman over Zoom video. Singer-songwriter Eloise Alterman makes her official ATCO/Big Yellow Dog/Atlantic Records debut with the release of her moving new EP, 'Sad Bird,'. Alterman creates music of exquisite sensitivity, finespun songs that capture the subtlest nuances of heartache and loss. A self-taught pianist/guitarist who began penning soul-baring songs in her early teens while growing up in Detroit, Alterman deferred her acceptance to the University of Southern California and moved to Nashville alone at age 17, without knowing a soul in all of Music City. After spending years working on her own to sharpen her craft, Big Yellow Dog Music's Carla Wallace signed her and brought her to Atlantic. Alterman soon signed with ATCO Records (a recent reactivation of the iconic Atlantic Records imprint first founded in 1955, including previously signed acts like Genesis, the Bee Gees, Cher, Donny Hathaway) and Full Stop Management (Harry Styles, Meghan Trainor, John Mayer) on the strength of the music now showcased on 'Sad Bird' - music that Alterman is now sharing with the world. Etched with gorgeously evocative lyricism and centered on Alterman's moody vocals, "Her" emerged after a long period of adamant resistance to its subject matter- the singular pain of knowing the one you love is hung up on someone else. With an understated yet captivating sound informed by longtime influences like Stevie Nicks and Joni Mitchell, 'Sad Bird' presents an up-close portrait of heartbreak, healing, and self-discovery. Eloise Alterman boldly pushes outside her comfort zone to craft the kind of timelessly poignant pop songs that cut right to the heart. Songs like "Her" and the deceptively anthemic "Sad Bird Still Sings" – the latter penned while alone in a hotel room near Utah's Zion National Park – reveal the emotional intensity Alterman has brought to her music since she first started writing songs on the piano in her family's basement. On "I Still Love You," Alterman infuses that emotional clarity into a devastating piano ballad, lacing her lilting melodies and choir-like harmonies through a detailed meditation on post-breakup grief. Newly based in L.A. after six years in Nashville, Alterman – whose recent TikTok cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams" went viral with over 3M views and 115K likes to date – has already noticed a shift in her self-perception after so thoroughly exploring the many stages of heartbreak. Interview with Mallrat

We had the pleasure of interviewing Mallrat over Zoom video. Mallrat's prized pop songwriting has become a beacon the Australian music industry will eagerly follow, and on her debut album Butterfly Blue, she embodies the spirit of its titular creature – but without the delicacy that keeps you at a distance. Over a dozen clever and open-hearted tracks, Mallrat – aka Grace Shaw – draws you in close and shows you the world through her wide, hopeful eyes. On Butterfly Blue, a lifetime of collecting influences across genres – from folk, country, and Florence + The Machine to the moody noir pop of Lana Del Rey and Azealia Banks' bold and charismatic hip-hop – come together into one vast and tender debut, a compilation of Shaw's emotions as eclectic and cohesive as those soundtracks she pored over. With combined streams topping 300 million, her trio of early EPs – Uninvited (2016), In The Sky (2018), Driving Music (2019) – are documents of an artist on the rise. In the process of making them, Shaw swapped the Brisbane suburbs for Los Angeles and toured both at home and internationally, including European and North American supports for Maggie Rogers and King Princess, selling out headline shows from London to New York, and collecting fans in the likes of Mark Ronson on the way. Butterfly Blue solidifies Mallrat's reputation as a master of clever, timeless pop. Sweeping across vast, airy production is often surprising samples and sounds tucked under the surface: chopped-up Gangsta Pat bars, a flipped recording of a children's choir performing Lisztomania. Distorted effects were recorded from discarded children's toys – a sonic gift from Clams Casino's producer. Layered, like an instrument all their own, are her signature breathy vocals, more assured than ever, worthy of the same attention and fixation she once applied to Imogen Heap's. Mallrat's journey to become the artist capable of making such an accomplished record has been a fascinating one – to watch and experience. Describing the metamorphosis of her favorite insect, she explains breathlessly: "The transformation they undergo is almost incomprehensible. They dissolve into goo and then reconstruct themselves – but hold onto the memories of their time as a caterpillar." She could just as easily be describing the next phase for Australia's rising pop princess as she prepares to unfurl her wings and show you how she's grown. We want to hear from you! Interview with Memphis May Fire (Matty Returns!)

⚡️Our first IN PERSON interview since March 2020! ⚡️ We had the pleasure of interviewing Matty Mullins of Memphis May Fire over Zoom video! Memphis May Fire makes anthems for the broken. The four-piece rock band channel a generation's worth of angst, frustration, and pain, with a focused blend of gigantic melodic hooks and crushing aggression. Even after topping Billboard's Hard Music Albums chart and breaking into radio's Active Rock Top 20, Memphis May Fire refuses to sacrifice who they are or the people who made them. In fact, Remade in Misery, their seventh full-length album, is the heaviest Memphis May Fire record yet. It is the first Memphis May Fire album to be both produced and mixed by Kellen McGregor, the band's guitarist who co-founded the group roughly 15 years ago. The longtime rhythm section of bassist Cory Elder and drummer Jake Garland inject the songs with infinite depth and focus. Cameron Mizell, who coproduced 2014 fan-favorite Unconditional with McGregor, produced Matty's vocals. Mullins enlisted his friend Cody Quistad, guitarist and clean vocalist for the band Wage War, during part of the writing process. Fire From The Gods singer AJ Channer guests on "Only Human." At the heart of any collaboration is the Memphis May Fire mission: to connect with the brokenhearted. The guys are family to the million-plus fans who follow Memphis May Fire on social media, revered by the people who discovered their early albums in 2009 and 2011; those who made Challenger (2012) the biggest selling debut in the history of Rise Records at the time; and everyone who championed their music since. Unconditional debuted at Number One on Billboard's Rock, Independent, and Hard Music charts. In 2016, This Light I Hold made inroads into radio while rooted in heaviness. Boasting the singles "The Old Me," "Live Another Day," and "Heavy is the Weight," Broken was a distillation of what the band does creatively, with the group's signature passion and fearless genre-bending. Remade in Misery is the sum total of all that's come before with a forceful charge into the future. We want to hear from you!
