Interview with Erika Ender
We had the pleasure of interviewing Erika Ender over Zoom video. Panamanian singer, songwriter, producer, communicator, and philanthropist Erika Ender is celebrating 30 years in the business by sharing a video for her breath-taking version of "Abrázame," a song from her ambitious MP3-45 album. The visual functions as a salute of her past while looking into the future, as we see her vision of a romantic vintage era delivered in her unique style. Originally by Julio Iglesias, Ender picked "Abrázame" as one of the three cover versions that makes up the Side B portion of her album MP3-45; produced by Moogie Canazio, this selection is a way of acknowledging some of the music that made an impact on her as a young person. Although Ender has excelled as a songwriter for most of her career, we now focus on her performing abilities which are just as impressive, taking the broken-hearted feelings of the lyrics and delivering them with poise and subtleness. Of her choice, Ender says, "When I was about two years old, I used to refer to Julio Iglesias as 'Mi Novio'. I wasn't supposed to be playing vinyl records myself, because I would scratch them—but I did anyway." Her admiration for the crooner shines through on her version. Erika Ender is an artist that is hard to pigeonhole yet there's one thing that shines through all her different facets—her big-hearted emotions. As a songwriter, she has more than 200 albums under her belt and more than 40 top singles; perhaps her biggest achievement was co-writing "Despacito," the chart-smashing hit that managed to stay a record number 16 weeks on the number one spot of the Billboard Hot 100, earning Ender awards, accolades, and nominations to some of the biggest recognitions from the industry, including Latin Grammys for Record of the Year and Song of the Year, as well as nominations at the 2018 Grammys, making her the only Latina woman to be nominated for Record and Song of the Year. She has also written hit singles for the likes of Marc Anthony, Jenni Rivera, Los Tigres Del Norte, Chayanne, and many others. As a solo artist, she has been releasing albums since 2007's Ábreme La Puerta, making the top of the Billboard Latin charts with some of her own hits. Released in 2020, MP3-45 is composed of six original songs and three covers. Along with "Abrázame," there's also "When I Fall In Love" by Nat King Cole and "Só Louco" by Gal Costa. With this, Erika Ender delivers a part of her history with a hint of what's to come. We want to hear from you! Interview with Johnny Day
We had the pleasure of interviewing Johnny Day over Zoom video. Johnny Day, a former oilfield worker turned full-time entertainer, recently released his new single, "Every Beer Every Bar" feat. Zack Dyer! Written by Dyer (Tim McGraw), Morgan Evans ("Kiss Somebody") and Lindsay Rimes (Kane Brown), "Every Beer Every Bar" raises a toast to getting over a relationship. Johnny Day is an American talent whose skillful singing, songwriting, and guitaring has catapulted him into a promising country music career. Born in Kersey, Colo., Day became intrigued by and studied the works of Brad Paisley. In high school, he taught himself how to play guitar like Paisley and even started working in the oilfield as a means of purchasing his own 64' vintage tele and Paisley's custom Dr. Z Wreck amp. Day's artistry was also inspired by the like of Keith Urban, Brent Mason and Shania Twain, all of whom influenced him to pursue music as a career. This pursuit would ultimately lead him to pack his bags and relocate his family to the mecca of country music, Nashville, Tenn., all while continuing to travel back to Colorado to work in the oilfield. His commitment to his family and to his career is made evident in the lyrics and chords of his music. Day is a seasoned entertainer who has performed at numerous premier venues and events across the country including Bluebird Café, Key West Songwriters Festival, and the Rocky Mountain Country music Awards where he was nominated for New Country Artist and Performer of the Year. Day is currently working as an independent artist and is completing his first record produced by The 720 with Jarrod Ingram and Blake Hubbard. He is also working with the A&R assistance of BJ Hill of Warner Chappell. We want to hear from you! Interview with Doe Paoro
We had the pleasure of interviewing Doe Paoro over Zoom video. Nothing stays still forever, the spirit of nature growing upward towards something greater. Fueled by that understanding, Doe Paoro has spent much of the last year deep in the Costa Rican jungle, exploring ways that music could activate deeper consciousness. Today, the musician, born Sonia Kreitzer, recently released her new EP Divine Surrendering. By deepening her connection with rituals like sound baths, psilocybin ceremonies, and the healing power of music, Paoro's latest work allowed her to entrust in music's potential to be a wellspring of uplift in the midst of gossamer beauty. Like the rebirth Paoro experienced in her own journey, the EP finds comfort in a constant sense of newness, growth, and transformation. Throughout Divine Surrendering, Paoro returns to grand humility, harnessing her strength by losing the self, tapping into something immense and drawing the listener to that same place. About Doe Paoro: Sonia Kreitzer is a singer, songwriter, and sound healer who performs under the name Doe Paoro (ANTI- Records) and lives between Costa Rica and Los Angeles. She has written songs for artists such as Peter Bjorn and John, Monogem, and Chris Ayers. Other artist collaborations include work with Justin Vernon, Son Little, and RAC. Her songs have amassed over 25 million streams across digital platforms and been featured in shows like HBO's Girls, SyFy's Being Human, ABC's Secrets and Lies, and more. She also records guided meditations which have been featured on both Apple Music and InsightTimer. Sonia grew up in Syracuse, New York and has studied music over the years in India, specifically learning Tibetan Opera singing. She comes from a family of healers and is interested in music as a healing modality. When not on tour, she facilitates soundbaths, singing and yoga retreats, and music for ceremonial spaces. She is the creator of Activating the Voice, an online course and workshop series that is dedicated to empowering the voice and tending to vocal-centered trauma through singing. Interview with The Hics
We had the pleasure of interviewing The Hics over Zoom video. After rousing fans both old and new with their comeback last year, London-based multi-hyphenate duo The Hics return with their eagerly anticipated new EP HARMINE, out now on EMPIRE. A five track release conceived during the last 5 years and pieced together during the global pandemic, HARMINE opens with 'Caught In A Lie', a deeply personal track first released as a single back in October 2021. The pair describe it as "not knowing what you've got until it's gone." A similar ethos permeates tracks like 'Tell Me', a sombre ballad delivered from the heart; 'On You', an ode to overcoming life's challenges; and 'Float', an unmistakably wistful vibe of a song. 'Reprise' is the project's closer, and it's an intricate piece of nu-soul that ensures things finish on a poignant note. "The EP is like diary extracts," The Hics explain. "Tales, reflections and experiences of early-to-mid-20s heartbreak, loss and interpersonal relationships." The full EP release follows on from the duo's official return last year, which came in the form of two staggered single releases in October and November; 'Caught In A Lie' and 'Reprise'. Surrendering to their newfound creativity and channeling this energy through more than one outlet, the duo partnered with fellow creative and friend Spike Silverton to create respective DIY music visuals for both singles, filmed on a mini DV camera that they purchased. The Hics recently released the music video for the single, "On You". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQ5BMfFNTUc&feature=youtu.be A long awaited follow-up to their 2013 debut EP TANGLE, HARMINE is The Hics' first release since they took an extended hiatus over the last few years. With their artistic journey at a crossroads, The Hics' musical destiny changed with an unlikely direct message on Twitter. After hearing 'Cold Air' while playing a marathon session of Grand Theft Auto V, Dreamville's Bas instantly fell in love with the duo and reached out in hopes of connecting and creating music. A week of collaboration in London would yield two classic songs on Bas' critically-acclaimed album Too High To Riot. These records laid the groundwork for The Hics to enter a new creative space as a duo, as they toured the world with the Dreamville family as a supporting act on the Too High To Riot tour. As The Hics explored and developed their musical passion, they developed a close bond with NYC creative collective The FIENDS. After years away from music, The Hics have reclaimed their art and have found their voice and crafted a cohesive, timeless piece of work with HARMINE, which kicks off the beginning of their new chapter. Interview with The Unlikely Candidates
We had the pleasure of interviewing The Unlikely Candidates over Zoom video. Coming off their multi-city tour with legendary band 311, The Unlikely Candidates were welcomed home with open arms as fans and Fort Worth residents listened to new and fan-favorite music from their album. The party included performances from the band, a specialty drink, raffles, and a champagne toast to celebrate this milestone. "Panther Island," which features 8 new and 3 previously released songs, was written over Zoom during the COVID-19 pandemic including "High Low," which was recorded in lead singer Kyle Morris' closet. "The record is a kaleidoscopic landscape of genre and style that changes from song to song, a greatest hits of the sonic worlds the band has inhabited over the years," says Morris. "Thematically it's just as varied, shifting from songs about the chaos on the streets and loneliness behind the phone screens of America during the pandemic, to humorous tales of twenty-something malaise and the many ways the heart breaks; when love or loved ones are lost. At the heart of this album is the ethos of taking a bad situation and making something of it. It was written during the pandemic while the world was shut down, by a band who has hit enough roadblocks to delay a debut album nine years." Following the release of their album, The Unlikely Candidates are going back on the road, making stops in the Midwest, the Mountain States, and Canada. All upcoming tour dates can be found here. TUC has previously toured with Fall Out Boy, The Dirty Heads, and Sublime with Rome, just to name a few. "Its been an honor working with The Unlikely Candidates and I am so very proud for them to release their first full length album," said Ryan Metheny, Director of Product Management at The Orchard. "After so many ups and downs over the last few years, they continue to blow me away with how hard they work and get through any roadblock put in front of them. It will be a great joy to see them play these songs in front of their fans this summer." Signed to Another Century, a subsidiary of Sony Music, The Unlikely Candidates are best known for their 2019 hit "Novocaine," which reached #1 on the Alternative Charts. The song was also featured in the Season 4 trailer of HULU's Veronica Mars, and on Now That's What I Call Music, with The music video becoming the #6 most viewed Alternative video of 2019 on VEVO. Interview with Riley Pearce
We had the pleasure of interviewing Riley Pearce over Zoom video. An introspective singer-songwriter, Riley Pearce often writes about his difficulty coping with change and his love-hate relationship with nostalgia. With family spread across the globe and his own stretches of living in a number of different cities, Riley's lyrics reflect that all too human need for connection. His honest songwriting and relatable storytelling has resonated both in Australia and overseas, with over 60 million streams to date. An in-demand live touring artist, Riley has sold out headline shows around the world and supported the likes of Lord Huron, Tash Sultana, Lifehouse, The Paper Kitesand Lucy Rose. For his EP" Love and All That Stuff", Riley steps out of his comfort zone and showcases a different style with a 5-track collection of love songs. 'This EP is all about journeying through life alongside someone you love, the ups and downs of a relationship, constantly trying to improve yourself for them, planning a future together, and letting someone eat the last chip because you know they'd appreciate it.' After a long lockdown in Melbourne, Riley moved back to his hometown of Perth with his long-term girlfriend and their new puppy. Exploring the theme of love properly for the first time was a big step for Riley. "I hope people really connect with the EP, and that they don't cry too much. And if this EP puts me in the good books with my partner, well that would be a nice bonus." We want to hear from you! Interview with Yours Truly
We had the pleasure of interviewing Yours Truly over Zoom video! Alternative bright lights Yours Truly have unveiled their new single and music video "Lights On." At just shy of three minutes long, 'Lights On' is fiery and to-the-point, while sticking around long enough to firmly cement itself in the listener's head. Fans can check out the music video now at https://youtu.be/BVHi5aZRsq8 and stream the track at https://yourstruly.orcd.co/lightson. About Yours Truly: Australia's Yours Truly are 2022's must-watch in the alternative scene. Huge international touring credits, media and radio trailblazing and a burgeoning brood of fans are just some of the successes that back this band, but it's the knack for punchy songwriting and performance deep in their DNA that makes this four-piece really tick. From their hometown in Sydney, Yours Truly first broke out with their 2019 EP Afterglow (hear its standout singles "Circles" and "High Hopes") and went on to spend the rest of the year gracing stages including Download UK, Riot Fest, and Good Things and supporting rock heroes including Sum 41 and State Champs on their international quests. In 2020 the band followed with their full-length Self Care, which saw the band awarded a laundry list of accolades including triple j's Feature Album and Tone Deaf's Record Of The Week, alongside band nominations for Rolling Stone's 'Best New Artist' and 'Best International Breakthrough Band' at the UK Heavy Awards. Following the arrival of their urgent, pulsing and frustration-filled single "Walk Over My Grave" in the latter half of 2021, 2022 finds the group stepping into a new era with the unveiling of "Lights On". Short, sharp and instantly memorable, Yours Truly continue to knock it out of the park ahead of more new music this year. We want to hear from you! Interview with The Wrecks (The Wrecks Return!)
We had the pleasure of interviewing The Wrecks over Zoom video. The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows by John Koenig which defines made up words for indescribable emotions classifies the neologism "sonder" as the "profound feeling of realizing that everyone, including strangers passing in the street, has a life as complex as one's own." The Wreck's vocalist/producer Nick Anderson landed on "Sonder" as the title of their sophomore album, which is out now via Big Noise Music Group. The band's most recent singles, the sparkling post-breakup anthem "Lone Survivor" and liberating alt-rock track "I Love This Part," showcase that they've fully honed-in on and embraced their characteristic genre bending alt-rock, as well as having evolved and matured their sounds for this triumphal venture of a second album. Anderson says that experimenting with minor keys and calculated lyrics. On Sonder, there's not only their distinctive witty, frantic genre-bending tracks ("Sonder," "Don't Be Scared," "Unholy," "Ugly Side"), but also their take on mesmerizing alt-rock love/loss ballads ("Where Are You Now?," "Dystopia," "Unrequited," "No Place I'd Rather Be," "Normal"). Sonder follows the release of the band's 2016 debut EP We Are The Wrecks (their first single "Favorite Liar" currently has 36 million+ streams on Spotify), their 2018 Panic Vertigo EP, their 2020 Static EP as well as their 2020 debut LP Infinitely Ordinary (58 million+ streams on Spotify). The Wrecks continue to rack up the massive fan base that has already given their top five singles on Spotify over 80 million listens. Poised for a wide-open road ahead of them, Nick Anderson and The Wrecks continue to charge into the limelight. Not too shabby for a kid from Wellsville, just two hours south of nowhere. The Wrecks begun as vocalist/producer Nick Anderson's sole endeavor and has since been rounded out by Aaron Kelley (bass), Nick "Schmizz" Schmidt (guitar) and Billy Nally (drums). The Wrecks also collaborated on a select number of tracks off Sonder with producers Westen Weiss (Meek Mill, Camila Cabello, Post Malone) and Dillon Deskin (Flo Rida, Will Sparks, Different Heaven, Myrne) to expand their sound. Interview with Future Palace
We had the pleasure of interviewing Future Palace over Zoom video. Future Palace just released their brand new album "Run" via Arising Empire and have shared the video for "Dead Inside". The song appears on the band's sophomore album Run. Get the album, which has been receiving increased attention from radio and press, such as SiriusXM, Idobi, American Songwriter, Bringin' It Backwards, A&P Reacts, Good Noise, and more, here. The release comes in CD, limited colored vinyl, and bundle formats. "Dead Inside" is about the aftershocks from a toxic relationship that not only left its mark in the past, but also raises the question of how to deal with it after the fact. "At the beginning of 'Dead Inside,' there was the personal experience that there are people who justify their behavior by saying that they are irrevocably and emotionally cold," says guitarist Manuel. "The track deals with a sometimes tragic situation both — lyrically and instrumentally. It reflects inner turmoil, helplessness, and anger at the same time." "Dead Inside" is the kind of song that begs to be played live, as well. "The new songs not only sound different," he continues. "They also came from different feelings. We are therefore particularly looking forward to the live shows — because capturing these feelings in music is one thing. Being able to share and express them directly is another." This is music that wants to be heard and felt — always and everywhere. For the music video, Future Palace worked with Peter Leukhardt (Annisokay, Beyond the Black, and Rising Insane.) Run was produced by Julian Breucker and Annisokay guitarist Christoph Wieczorek, who also mixed and mastered the record. The album explores the aftermath of a toxic relationship in a stunning and vulnerable way. The struggle with one's own salvation is only the beginning — even after escaping from a tough situation. The band sets these painful processes to music in dramatic post-hardcore fashion, which atmospherically reproduces the ups and downs of emotions. Kindred sonic spirits are Holding Absence, Spiritbox, While She Sleeps, Bring Me The Horizon, and Pvris. Future Palace released their debut Escape via Arising Empire and have since accumulated several million streams across streaming platforms. We want to hear from you! Interview with Nick Mulvey
We had the pleasure of interviewing Nick Mulvey over Zoom video. New Mythology is the third album from Mercury Prize-nominated artist Nick Mulvey and his first in 5 years. Out today on Verve Forecast (Fiction Records in the UK), the record was recorded in Paris with renowned producer Renaud Letang (Manu Chao, Feist, Connan Mockasin) and is a stunning 13 track collection brimming with Nick's innate musicality and insatiable curiosity about the connection between humans and the planet we live on. The album was featured this morning on NPR's New Music Friday, with Robin Hilton saying It might be my favorite record of the week…almost like living room recordings that start very quiet but then they'll bloom in these beautiful ways." "The Gift" was also just featured as a Song of the Day on KUTX and Mulvey's interview with Variance Magazine ran yesterday. Journeys come in a myriad of forms. Nick Mulvey knows this, he's been on many since he released his sophomore album Wake Up Now. Be it a change in geographical scenery – a physical move of home from the UK to Ibiza, and back – to the sea-sawing wonder and vulnerability of the everyday human experience; in this case becoming a father and navigating the pandemic. Most pertinent though, when it comes to his powerful songwriting, has been his journey to compute the scope and scale of his feelings: an attempt to embody the personal all the way to the planetary – and grasp their true inseparability. Nick Mulvey has come a long way since the release of his critically acclaimed debut album First Mind in 2014. A musician, composer and producer, he has amassed a staggering 587 million streams globally, the equivalent of half a million albums sold and has completely sold out his first headline UK tour since before the pandemic, including his headline show at London's Koko.
