Interview with 'Captain' Kirk Douglas of The Roots // Hundred Watt Heart

We had the pleasure of interviewing "Captain" Kirk Douglas over Zoom video. The Roots guitarist "Captain" Kirk Douglas issues a brand new single and music video entitled "We Can Be One" under his solo imprint Hundred Watt Heart. The New York-based GRAMMY® Award-winning guitarist and vocalist steps into the spotlight with this introspective and infectious anthem. The track hinges on a wah-pedal drenched funk riff, simmering beat, and boisterous horn section. It locks into an Afrobeat-infused strut as he repeats an undeniable and uplifting mantra on the hook, "We can be one." The Alexander Fischetti-directed accompanying video captures this spirit and highlights Kirk's powerful presence as a frontman in his own right. It harnesses the track's psychedelic sound and influences from funk to jazz to jam and everything in between, establishing Kirk as a genre-defying master of his craft. Most importantly, "We Can Be One" paves the way for his anxiously awaited new full-length solo LP—due out very soon. Stay tuned for more from "Captain" Kirk Douglas. Audiences worldwide recognize "Captain" Kirk Douglas's scorching singular style as a six-string powerhouse. Joining The Roots back in 2003, he has supplied guitar and background vocals for a series of critically acclaimed Top 10 albums on the Billboard Top 200, including The Tipping Point [2004], Game Theory [2006], Rising Down [2008], How I Got Over [2010], and Wake Up! [2010] with John Legend. The latter garnered a pair of GRAMMY® Awards, namely "Best R&B Album" and "Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance" for "Hang On In There." In addition, his guitar powered The Roots's tastemaker-approved …And Then You Shoot Your Cousin in 2014. Between countless sold-out live shows, he holds down guitar duties for the band nightly on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. He also notably forces with Gibson Guitars to release his own signature SG model. We want to hear from you! Interview with Oceans Ate Alaska

We had the pleasure of interviewing Oceans Ate Alaska over Zoom video. Balance requires duality. As such, Oceans Ate Alaska thrive in the midst of extremes. The British quintet—James Harrison [vocals], Chris Turner [drums], James "Jibs" Kennedy [guitar], Adam Zytkiewicz [guitar], and Mike Stanton [bass]—ebb and flow between moments of elite metallic intensity, proficient progressive experimentation, and delicate lo-fi bliss. They plunge dynamic depths and surface with an utterly unpredictable and undeniable signature style meant to upend expectations at every turn. After tallying tens of millions of streams and earning acclaim from Alternative Press, New Noise Magazine, and more, the group perfect this balance on their third full-length offering, Disparity [Fearless Records]. Oceans Ate Alaska have carefully and quietly progressed to this point. Following their 2015 debut Lost Isles, they presented Hikari in 2017. "Hansha" amassed over 10.8 million Spotify streams as the album surpassed 40 million total streams. Along the way, they toured with the likes of Wage War, The Plot In You, We Came As Romans, Like Moths To Flames, and more. Throughout 2021, they assembled what would become Disparity. Inspired by a mutual love for the likes of Bonobo and Alina Baraz, collaborator Clem Cherry enhanced the production with airy beat-craft and immersive sonic accents. At the same time, they absorbed the unease of the world, infusing a post-apocalyptic thematic undercurrent. We want to hear from you! Across Easy On My Eyes, Stephen recounts an unbelievable year since his emergence. He wrote nearly all of the songs on the EP himself and teamed up with Jamie Hartman [James Bay, Lewis Capaldi] and Jon Green [Lady A, Little Big Town] on "Hey Girl." He then worked with producers Ian Fitchuk [Kacey Musgraves, James Bay] and Konrad Snyder [Madi Diaz, Rainbow Kitten Surprise] in Nashville to bring the EP to life in one-take performances. Interview with Shiadanni

We had the pleasure of interviewing Shiadanni over Zoom video. A lot of self-reflection and introspection came to Shiadanni in order to make this EP. In November of 2019, Shiadanni moved away from the city, and surrounded herself in nature and silence to try to find peace. Her plans of being an artist had changed but using this time of self-reflection she decided she would make music for herself. Shortly after moving away, the pandemic hit and she was forced to live with her thoughts every day which helped analyze her life. Through music, she was able to talk to her younger self and empower her. Eventually, she was able to produce enough music to release 3 full studio albums and narrow down six powerful tracks for "Facing The Mirror." Shiadanni has showcased her inner strength while creating the luminary cool and dynamic sound that she's known for, leaving listeners ready for what's next. Just recently, Shiadanni released the striking visuals for "Penny Pills" and "Velvet World." The contrast of the blue coloring in "Penny Pills" and the captivating red in "Velvet World" shows the diverse talent she displays cinematically. ABOUT SHIADANNI Pop singers tend to prefer sunny weather to stormy skies. It's the rare artist who has the courage to dive deep in song. But Shiadanni is no ordinary artist, and her music is anything but average. The Montreal alternative pop singer and songwriter has already demonstrated that she can bring the party: her prior singles were dancefloor burners, late-night anthems, fearless amalgamations of European club music and Latin soul. But with her latest, she's taking us somewhere we've never been before — her mind. The singer and songwriter was born and raised in Guadalajara, and the echoes of Mexican pop-rock are audible in everything she does. But she's currently based in Montreal, the center of the dream-pop revolution, and the sound she's crafted there draws heavily from late-night R&B and moody, intoxicated hip-hop. With the confidence of an auteur who has found her path, Shiadanni nods toward the many places she's been and makes records that suit the whole world. We want to hear from you! Kalpee is a rising artist from Trinidad & Tobago and part of a new generation of Caribbean musicians pushing a fresh tropical sound aptly named "New Calypso". Pulling from his heritage, Kalpee delivers a modern fusion of Calypso, dancehall and reggae rhythm, laced with rock inspired guitar riffs, supported by soulful melodies and a captivating r&b vocal delivery. Island Wave successfully launched @ SXSW on March 18th, filling the Flamingo Cantina Austin, TX to capacity as part of the official SXSW festivities with an after party hosted by Ras Kwame and Reggae Recipe. First of its kind, 'Island Wave' is now not only the official home to Caribbean music at SXSW, returning in 2023 and years to come, but also the first home of 'New Calypso', a genre being pushed by Trinbagonian musicians as a way to identify their musical heritage, which they proudly carry forward. As we anticipate the release of Kalpee's debut album later this year and as he continues to explore his New Calypso sound and pursue his projects with intentional passion, this deft Musician, singer, songwriter, producer is very much affirming his position as an artist to watch in 2022! Interview with GLDMTH (Ryan Guldemond Returns!)

We had the pleasure of interviewing GLDMTH over Zoom video. Frontman and songwriter, Ryan Guldemond of alt-rock touring and streaming giant MOTHER MOTHER has released his deeply personal solo project GLDMTH (pronounced gold mouth) today. As a true multi-media experience, the eleven-track album arrives with an official video for lead single "The People" which was directed, shot, and edited by Guldemond himself. The introspective video evokes the feeling of an experimental short film exposing the poignant beauty of the everyday life from which Guldemond draws his work's awestruck and melancholic spiri. GLDMTH is available now on DSP's, vinyl, and CD. "GLDMTH is a project where I'm able to show artistic reverence for how I see the world, which is innately strange and beautiful and profound and mundane and poignant and funny and wholesome and disturbing," Guldemond explains. "From people, to nature, to dystopia, birdsong and dreams, I try to let the cues of life fuel the sound and imagery of GLDMTH. Whether it's a conversation, the rhythm of a train, or caution tape strung up on a swing set during a pandemic, it's all fuel for the project which is driven by music, photography, poetry and videography. I feel very grateful to have a space where I'm able to be so freely creative, using my favourite mediums, to metabolize the human experience in an artful manner." In addition to the hauntingly beautiful official video for "The People," each track from the album has been released as a lyric video featuring animated imagery. In addition, Guldemond curated photographs from his archive, resulting in a visual representation for each song on the album. These striking images make up the artwork for the physical package.
