Interview with Ian Brennan
We had the pleasure of interviewing Ian Brennan Zoom video! GRAMMY Award-winning music producer and lauded field-recording trailblazer Ian Brennan (Tinariwen, Zomba Prison Project, Ustad Saami) continues his acclaimed recording career of over 50 releases with the first album ever made featuring the wisdom and voices of those over 100 years old. The Oldest Voice in the World (Azerbaijan) "Thank you for bringing me back to the sky" takes Brennan and his wife, Italian-Rwandan filmmaker and photographer Marilena Umuhoza Delli to the remote villages of the "long-livers" just miles from the Iran border. 22 pieces comprise the album with five bonus tracks featuring artists that Brennan has collaborated with over his acclaimed career: The Kronos Quartet, Tinariwen, Malawi Mouse Boys, Yuka Honda, and The Good Ones (Rwanda). In late 2021, Brennan and Delli traveled to the southern mountains of Azerbaijan, where legend has it that the world's oldest man hailed from there -- having survived to age 168. Brennan and Delli made the ambitious excursion amid a coincidental deluge of social media trends going public on the best practices for "staying young." Visiting rural villages to capture the heart of the under-represented population of the oldest people on earth, the centenarians' stories eloquently came to life and serve as an anti-ageism antidote. Upon their arrival in Azerbaijan, villagers had been ravaged by COVID-19 and most residents over 100 had sadly died in recent months, including the oldest known woman in the country. Traversing from village to village, they came to discover centenarian after centenarian living without indoor plumbing, sleeping on floor-bound mattresses, and what seemed to Brennan, that they were almost anticipating their arrival with such a warm reception by the Talysh people. Brennan is renowned for scouring the far stretches of the globe to document singers in an uninhibited, authentic fashion. From recordings in regions such as Rwanda, Malawi, South Sudan, Karachi, Comoros, Palestine, Ukerewe Island, Cambodia, and Romania, this latest project brings him to a region where no outsiders ever wander. The villages were so remote, Brennan's Azerbaijani speaking companion from the city advised that the locals' words were completely unintelligible. And even the Talysh speaker from the valley below could only make out less than 80% of what was being said in the remote mountain villages. As they began meeting the centenarians, one theme was ever-present once they sang. Most would sing of their mother, and their secret to life was simple, "I was loved." Voices were recorded in their natural living environments. For instrumentation along with their voices, Brennan used the wood-burning furnace providing heat for the house, a walker, their own footsteps, a broken bedroom door, or the farm flour grinder. Brennan and Delli experienced raw emotion from the centenarians. A former shepherd was singing and became overcome and shakily stood up to leave the room after having sung a song that his mother used to sing. We want to hear from you! Interview with Sophie Powers
We had the pleasure of interviewing Sophie Powers over Zoom video! Genre-blending singer-songwriter Sophie Powers has shared her eagerly awaited label debut single, "Nosebleed," available now via Atlantic Records in partnership with TAG Music, the innovative new record label founded by trailblazing musician/entrepreneur Gabe Saporta (Cobra Starship, Midtown). Marked by its provocative lyricism and grungy twist on an inherently cookie-cutter genre, the track explores this generation's tendency to experience emotional extremes, as noted by the powerful chorus, "and we feel nothing even though we feel it all." Toronto born, Los Angeles based artist Sophie Powers has been a force to be reckoned with since convincing her parents to let her drop out of high school and pursue a career in music at 16 years old, while also making her own clothes and becoming a fashion designer in her own right that fit the aesthetic and the direction she was heading with her craft. Within two years of taking that risk, she quickly earned attention for her direct and emotionally charged songs about teen relationships, depression, anxiety, all told through a unique musical blend of hyper pop, dark pop and punk pop. Powers' bold approach has reaped over 100K monthly Spotify listeners, close to 185K followers on TikTok (and more than 5.6M likes), 123K followers on Instagram, all affirming the immediate connection she has already made with fans around the world. NOSEBLEED, like all of Sophie's music, has a deeply rebellious spirit. Growing up, Sophie was drawn to strident, powerfully confident pop stars like Lady Gaga and Kesha, who struck down expectations of what it meant to be a "female artist" with little more than their own star power; the first show she ever went to was a Bruce Springsteen concert, an artist unafraid to unpick the social mores of conventional North American society and who made his way to arena stages through wry subversion. Avril Lavigne, Canada's patron saint of sarcastic, singular weirdos, was also a key influence. So you can understand how Sophie became the artist she is today: She was raised by musicians who valued individuality and, more importantly, pure honesty, above all else. Powers has raised her profile through features with artists like Kellin Quinn, NOAHFINNCE, DE'WAYNE, and $atori Zoom; collaborations with Bonnie McKee, Slush Puppy, Jon Lundin, Mike Gonek, Cam Hunter, Matt Squire, Jack Laboz, and Sacco; and show-stopping live performances spanning events like Subculture, So What Fest, and DUSK AZ Festival to tours and special guest slots with NOAHFINNCE, Wicca Phase Springs Eternal, Peaches, and Scene Queen, Poptropicalslutz! Now, with "Nosebleed" and more new music to follow, Sophie Powers is creating her inimitable footprint… and the best part is, she's only just getting started. We want to hear from you! Interview with We Three
We had the pleasure of interviewing We Three over Zoom video! The group made up of siblings Manny, Joshua and Bethany appeared on America's Got Talent. Since then, they have released three full-length albums and EPs and toured extensively. They also amassed over 200 M streams on Spotify and have exceeded 2.2 M followers on their social media. About We Three: Since releasing their debut album in 2018, Portland's We Three has managed to rack up over 240+ M total song streams,1.3 M followers on TikTok that gathered 30 M likes, and a large dedicated following on social media. This is due, in large part, to the band's unique approach to songwriting, which can be described as an unusual ability to deliver highly relatable songs about mental health, love, and insecurity. Interview with Against The Current
We had the pleasure of interviewing Against The Current over Zoom video! New York pop-rock band Against The Current have shared an acoustic version of their recent single "blindfolded." The new version of the song takes the energetic, fiery original track – the first independent release from the band in seven years– and trades it in for a more mellowed-out feel that allows frontwoman Chrissy Costanza's captivating vocals to shine. On the new track, Chrissy shares, "Reimagining our music in different skins has always been central to our identity. The same way we've refused to follow the rules of any one music scene or genre, we allow our music to do the same. 'blindfolded' (acoustic) lets us tell the same story in different light." The initial release of "blindfolded" was featured on Spotify's All New Rock and Fierce Femmes, Apple Music's The New Rock and Breaking Rock, Amazon Music's Fresh Rock, and other notable playlists, as well as landing the band as cover artists on Spotify's All New Rock playlist. Against The Current are getting ready to head out on the road for Nightmares & Daydreams World Tour alongside Trophy Eyes and special guests Yours Truly. Against The Current have earned accolades and a faithful fan following with their brand of pop, rock, and indie sounds. Founded in 2011 by charismatic singer Chrissy Costanza alongside Dan Gow (guitar, vocals) and Will Ferri (drums, keyboards, vocals), the band quickly established themselves as an original force all their own with thrilling live shows, EPs including 2015's top 3 Billboard Heatseekers breakthrough Gravity and 2021's fan-favorite Fever, and two studio albums In Our Bones and Past Lives. ATC released an exclusive song – "Legends Never Die" – for the 2017 League Of Legends World Championship. The song has been certified Gold in the United States and Silver in the United Kingdom, has over 464 million streams on Spotify, and the video currently boasts over 235 million views on YouTube. Against The Current has spent much time either in the studio or on the road, headlining world tours including the 2017-2018 Past Lives World Tour and the current Nightmares & Daydreams World Tour, and sharing international stages with such artists as Fall Out Boy, Good Charlotte, and more. Interview with World Gone Cold
We had the pleasure of interviewing World Gone Cold over Zoom video! World Gone Cold, featuring members of P.O.D, Demon Hunter, Disciple, The Letter Black, and Attack Attack!, release their debut, self-titled EP via Rockfest Records. With all of their forces combined, the members of World Gone Cold unleash a gritty, high-octane collection of songs with fiery themes. In true supergroup fashion, the EP pulls from each member's influences and boldly bends the expectations of the metal genre. "This is a very diverse collection of songs. The writing seemed to come very natural for us. There was no strain or argument for what the sound became it just kind of kept evolving from song to song. It felt as if we were on some sort of quest to keep blending and manipulating the boundaries of modern metal and pop combined. There was no shame in this process. Each member added their own vibe unapologetically and I think that clearly shows throughout the EP." - Ryland Raus, Vocalist of World Gone Cold WORLD GONE COLD, comprised of members from legacy bands: Traa Daniels (P.O.D), Tim "Yogi" Watts (Demon Hunter), Andrew Stanton (Disciple), Mark Anthony (The Letter Black), and Ryland Raus (Attack Attack! & Inhale/Exhale), deliver massive hard rock anthems with a huge wall of guitars, fluid bass rumble, monstrous drums, and soaring vocals, exploding into a mixture of heavy groove and melodic hooks. A combination of organic metal and radio-ready songwriting encompasses the foundation of a band that began as one man's solo outlet and quickly transformed into an unprecedented supergroup. This new band arrives armed with songs akin to the timeless catchiness of Rob Zombie or Nine Inch Nails, with the postmodern urgency of Bring Me The Horizon, Architects, and I Prevail. Interview with Malavika
We had the pleasure of interviewing Malavika over Zoom video! International R&B singer-songwriter, Malavika, has released her empowering single, "Overdrive". A full-package entertainer, Malavika draws on her globe-spanning influences to craft a mélange of r&b, hip-hop and pop from a unique perspective. "Overdrive" is truly a global collaboration, created across three continents - Berlin, Dubai, and LA; including an Indian vocal sample sung by Malavika herself. She says ""Overdrive" is a song that showcases a different side of my personality. It's confident, sexual and empowering. It's about taking control, reversing gender stereotypes and expressing yourself unabashedly. But at the same time it's a sexy R&B love song that is in an ode to your person." Malavika's intoxicating vocals are on full display, as she initiates romance with her lover over a pulsing beat, with natural confidence and sultry playfulness. Following the organic success of the only other two singles to her name, "Don't Let Go" and "Sugarcoat," "Overdrive" was created with all the elements that Malavika is most inspired by. She expands "Vocally I wanted to go in on the song in terms of the harmonies, layers and adlibs. It's stacked and is reminiscent of early 2000s R&B, one of many eras where the ad libs really mattered. I have this moment in the second verse where I wanted to have a Queen inspired harmony moment." With West Coast legend DJ Quik, as her mentor, "Overdrive" showcases a combination of Malavika's confident writing ability, commanding vocals, and musical influences. Alongside songwriting, Malavika has also found herself an advocate for infiltrating her culture into everything she creates. She expands; "The influences in my music are unique to my experience and upbringing, including the exposure to multilingual music. I try to incorporate sonic and visual elements of my culture whenever I can in a way that's natural and organic, because it's a part of my identity." Born and raised in India, Malavika began to display a profound love for the performing arts from her earliest years, and began performing at just 3 years old. Being exposed to various contrasting worlds and cultures throughout her childhood has had a transformative role in Malavika's development as an artist. Imprinted with her parents' love for music, Malavika grew up idolizing Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Tina Turner, alongside Indian masters like A.R. Rahman - not to mention the harder-hitting hip-hop of Jay-Z, Missy Elliott, Kanye West and Drake. These influences helped push Malavika to make the move to Los Angeles to pursue her career, where she was discovered by West Coast legend DJ Quik, who is now a mentor and collaborator furthering her development as an artist. DJ Quik and Malavika have since worked on a variety of records, and toured together performing her music at the Novo in LA and venues all across the Bay Area. In 2020, Malavika's debut single "Sugarcoat" premiered via Flaunt, and was followed by her 2023 release of "Don't Let Go," which premiered on BBC Radio. During quarantine Malavika posted a cover "All N My Grill" on social media which warranted a response from the legendary Missy Elliott herself. Her vision is to not only become a global artist, but also to create music and art that go beyond borders to integrate various cultures and their musical identities. Bringing people from all parts of the world together into the same arena is what Malavika strives for. We want to hear from you! This marks the band's first self-produced release, composed of 10-tracks and what is considered to be their most authentic work yet. We've worked really hard on this and feel it's the most accurate representation of what we're all about, proud to have it as the first full length release in our discography."
