Interview with Haiden (Haiden Returns!)
We had the pleasure of interviewing Haiden over Zoom video!LA rising pop artist Haiden has released his new single “you don’t even like me” about the existential fear of being too flawed to be loved. The track is the second single from his upcoming sophomore EP, Choke on My Heart, out on August 18th. “My friends tell me that this is the most honest song I’ve ever written,” says Haiden. “For the first time, I very explicitly tell you how I see myself — going into my fears of not being attractive or well-spoken enough for people to like me.”If Haiden’s debut EP got his foot in the door, his forthcoming EP, Choke on My Heart, is pulling the rest of his body through. The 22-year-old singer-songwriter is diving deeper into himself with a newfound vulnerability in his music. Using catchy pop melodies as capsules for deeper lyricism, raw emotion bleeds from the songs and illuminates his relationships, adolescence, and self in a new light.Growing up in Southern California, Haiden was a self-proclaimed “serial hobbyist.” Music, however, was the one passion that shone through his other endeavors. In high school, he embarked on a science-heavy path, later studying aerospace engineering his first three years of college. Feeling unfulfilled, he transferred into The University of Southern California and moved to LA, ditching his STEM path for music industry courses. When his guitar playing was halted by the return of a childhood medical condition, Haiden began songwriting to fill that void, having his first string of viral moments on TikTok in 2022.His 2022 racehorse single “Sorry to Your Next Ex” has amassed over 15M global streams, driving his debut EP to surpass 25M globally to date. As his music continues to grow, so does his desire to connect with fans. Music has allowed Haiden to channel his emotions into a healthy outlet, and he wants his listeners to hear their own stories within his songs too. Coming off a successful US winter tour last year, he’s ready to hit the road again this fall.We want to hear from you! Interview with Dean Ford
We had the pleasure of interviewing Dean Ford over Zoom video!Rising pop-rock artist Dean Ford has released his new EP Dream Fever. The formation of the 6-track EP began out of a need for creativity and excitement for Dean as he expanded on his sonic exploration, combining classic 80s synth-pop and rock. Resulting in his most cohesive project yet, the project finds Dean detailing the different kinds of love found throughout life's journey: the hopefulness and infatuation you feel at the beginning of something new, the realities that set in when the rose-tinted glasses come off, the power struggles that can manifest, and everything in between.Co-written and produced by studio wizard Bleu (Demi Lovato, Jonas Brothers, MichelleBranch), Dream Fever further elevates the vibrant and effervescent sound Dean is best known for as he speaks to the emotional ups and downs that occur in any relationship as well as the overall effect we have on one another. Dean reminisces on memories of the past while longing for the potential the future can bring.First creating music at 15, Dean always saw himself becoming a performer and did just that. The Maine-based multi-instrumentalist and songwriter took inspiration from legends such as David Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Madonna, and James Brown — artists who were bigger than their music, personas, and cultural markers all unto themselves — when developing his sound throughout the years both on and off the stage. Dean has gone on to release two earlier projects, 2012’s Ctrl and 2015’s Get Messy, along with a string of singles as a solo artist in addition to captivating audiences around the country with his Prince tribute band, Dean Fordand the Beautiful Ones. Inspired by the isolation of the pandemic, which kept him from the stage where he feels most at home, Dean is excited now more than ever to share this next chapter with fans everywhere. We want to hear from you! Interview with Pocket
We had the pleasure of interviewing Pocket over Zoom video! After much fanfare for his recent singles, the rising star of the electronic scene, Edinburgh-raised Pocket, recently released his debut Helix Records EP, ‘Love DIsc.’The EP features the single, “Evergreen (ft. kloe),” which is available to stream now. The track is built around a joyful and radiant house instrumental that balances perfectly with kloe’s heartfelt lyrics and stunning vocal delivery.“‘Evergreen’ was a song that I started with the idea that its simplicity is its strength. Lots of texture and all based around the piano part. KLOE and I had a chat about our lives and everything we were experiencing, and the song became a love letter to being with someone long distance. The unapologetic lyrics and feel is to me what makes it such a standout. In the climate of house music and dance music in the UK, it’s very easy to hold yourself back from making something sweet and warm with the fear of not fitting the mold, and I’m happy with taking the chance to make that happen,” Pocket says.Diversity is the name of the game when it comes to Pocket’s approach to music and the EP offers a kaleidoscope of ranges and styles. Emblematic of Pocket’s fresh sound, “U (ft. BRONZE AVERY)” is the perfect combination of pop, house, and UK garage. Pocket’s light and airy instrumental melds perfectly with BRONZE AVERY’s powerful-yet-soothing vocals. Using curiously satisfying vocal chops, and minimal but intricate production, ‘Crying at Supermac’s’ shows off a sound reminiscent of classic Burial. Pocket’s unique style pierces through the saturated scene, showcasing a unique and excitable new project for fans. It’s been an incredible start to Pocket’s career - he was named one of the top 25 artists to watch in 2022 by Mixmag (his song 'Heartbreak Engineering' was also named amongst ‘Best Tracks of the Year April 2022’); received playlist support from Flume, DJ Seinfeld, and Salute, released a remix for Charli XCX and performed alongside Porter Robinson and Fred Again and has been included in tastemaker playlists POLLEN and Altar. Pocket’s recent release, ‘U (ft BRONZE AVERY), featured in Paper Magazine in addition to receiving support from a who’s who of DJs including Armin Van Buuren, The Magician, Dillon Francis, Joris Voorn, Calvin Harris, MK, Icarus, Oliver Heldens, Martin Garrix, Kryder, Sam Divine, Don Diablo, Carl Craig, Gabriel & Dresden / Dave, and PS1, among others. We want to hear from you! Interview with Patrick Davis
We had the pleasure of interviewing Patrick Davis over Zoom video! With Carolina When I Die, Davis reintroduces himself as a Southern storyteller and classic craftsman. It's a modern-day album steeped in the timeless sounds of his influences: the smooth soul of Ray Charles, the heartland folk-rock of Jackson Browne, the nuanced country of Lyle Lovett, and the big-band bombast of Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen. Tying those sounds together is a versatile musician who, having already established himself as a hit songwriter for others, is rededicating himself to his own records. Carolina When I Die may be the fifth full-length release of Davis' catalog, but it marks a new beginning, too.Carolina When I Die nods to Davis' small-town roots in Camden, South Carolina, where he spent most of his adolescence. His father was a working musician who taught his son to appreciate the good stuff, from the Beatles to Van Morrison. When he was still young, Davis would attend his dad's shows and climb onstage for a song or two, laying the foundation for the career he'd launch as an adult. With "Carolina When I Die," the album's title track, he reflects on countless miles traveled since leaving that childhood home. "I've rambled all around this world, seen the Northern Lights / I have drank with kings and queens and señoritas of the night," he sings over a finger-plucked acoustic guitar. The song isn't just a travelogue; it's a love song for one's home, with Davis longing to go back to the place where it all began. If "Carolina When I Die" unfolds like Davis' own story, then "Six String Dreams" is the story of musicians everywhere. Written alongside Sadler Vaden — longtime guitarist for Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit — and rooted in a 1970s-worthy soul groove, the song pays tribute to blue-collar troubadours who make their living beneath the stage lights. During the rest of Carolina When I Die, Davis gets funky on "L-O-V-E" (written with Randolph Randolph, who recorded his own version of the song on the Grammy-nominated album Got Soul), teams up with the late Guy Clark for "Wrong Side of the Tracks," and examines the colorblind friendship between two characters on the stunning "Black Jesus." Some songs make room for stacked layers of electric guitar, brass, organ, and vocal harmonies — a dense sound that Davis regularly recreates in a live setting with his 11-piece touring band, Patrick Davis & His Midnight Choir — while others are simple, stark, acoustic recordings that shine a light on Davis' own delivery. It's an eclectic mix, delivered by a lyrically-driven songwriter who's never been afraid to embrace the full range of his influences. We want to hear from you! Interview with Citizen Cope
We had the pleasure of interviewing Citizen Cope over Zoom video! The title of Citizen Cope’s new record is The Victory March—a phrase that might seem curious considering the chaotic state of the world. But for the singer/songwriter/producer, that’s exactly why this concept represented the message he sought to express right now.For Citizen Cope, born Clarence Greenwood, the songs on The Victory March mark a new sense of accomplishment and ambition, both personally and creatively. Musically, this material—co-produced by Alex Elena (Alice Smith, Lily Allen)—adds more expansive arrangements, with horns and strings, to Cope’s signature blend of hip-hop-based beats with blues, soul, folk, and rock. “Give Love a Try (Dancing Lullaby)” offers a vision of romantic bliss atop a percolating dub reggae track, while “Time Comes Around” goes from sparse chords to surging strings, matching the theme of perseverance and conviction. The grander approach began when Cope was asked to write for a film, and while the project didn’t end up using his music, he got the song “Close to You” out of it. It's evident in the appropriately sweeping, dramatic feel of the title track, its aspirational lyric (“I fought a winless battle / With the judges that carry the news / I found a place where the planets move / To get close to you”) delivered over a neck-snapping beat.Maybe, though, this sense of confidence and purpose comes from the lessons of patience that Cope has learned from his own extraordinary career. Victory March is being released as his 2004 album The Clarence Greenwood Recordings approaches platinum status, despite never actually appearing on the charts. Although “Let the Drummer Kick,” from his self-titled 2002 debut, went gold, and his compositions have been recorded by such artists such as Carlos Santana, Sheryl Crow, Richie Havens, and Dido, as well as appearing in numerous films and TV shows, for years Cope couldn’t find his place in the music industry. In 2010, Cope tried a new path, founding his own record label, Rainwater Recordings. He released The Rainwater LP later that year, followed in 2012 by One Lovely Day. But then came seven years in which he didn’t put out any new music.Cope returned with Heroin and Helicopters in 2019 and The Pull of Niagara Falls in 2021. When he started working on the new record, though, he found that he was having problems with his voice. With The Victory March, Citizen Cope feels he has nothing left to prove. Twenty years in, he’s found that there’s really no choice other than to pursue his own sound and speak his own truth—which has proven to be about survival and hope rather than despair, a message the world desperately needs to hear. Interview with Gabriel Olafs
We had the pleasure of interviewing Gabríel Ólafs over Zoom video!Lullabies soundtrack the most formative season of our development. For centuries, parents have hummed them to children as either a salve to ease stress, a natural aid to trigger sleep, or a simple reminder that all will be well in the world once morning comes. Imprinted upon our memories and carried within our hearts for lifetimes, we pass them from one generation to the next. Icelandic composer and artist Gabríel Ólafs continues this tradition on his 2023 album, Lullabies for Piano and Cello [Decca Records US]. After generating over 100 million streams for his original instrumental compositions and earning widespread international acclaim, he summons the spirit of timeless Icelandic lullabies with a twist of his own magic.Gabríel’s uncanny melodic sensibility has elevated him to the forefront of contemporary classical music. Following years of writing and performing, he gained international renown with Absent Minded in 2019 followed by Piano Works a year later, hailed by PopMatters as “a testament to the power of melody and mood.” 2022’s Solon Islandus marked his debut for Decca Records US, Atwood Magazine described standout track “The Drifter” as “beautifully tender and achingly visceral.”On Solon Islandus, he effectively traced a creative roadmap through Iceland’s artistic and cultural history in order to gain a deeper understanding of its conscious and subconscious impact on his own persona and vision. In particular, he leaned on the writing of renowned Icelandic poet Davíð Stefánsson, drawing inspiration from his body work and absorbing its spirit in the album.Beyond his own family experiences, he recalled hearing of a famous book entitled Icelandic Folk Songs. Originally published in 1906, this out-of-print tome collated various folk numbers and lullabies with rare sheet music. At the suggestion of a friend, Gabríel found a copy. He decided to not only reimagine five of the book’s tunes, but to also pen five of his own lullabies as an homage and response to tradition.Accompanied by cellist Steiney Sigurðardóttir, the duo tracked the album in Reykjavik’s Eldborg Concert Hall. Following the implementation of choir, orchestra, and cinematic heft on Solon Islandus, Gabríel made a conscious decision to strip the sound down to just these two instruments. As opposed to electronics, multi-tracking provided expansive flourishes. Together, Gabríel and Steiney unlocked a striking sound reliant on their quiet chemistry and a rich connection. We want to hear from you!
