Interview with Frank Meyer, Bruce Duff, and Josie Cotton about Flatten the Curve
We had the pleasure of interviewing Frank Meyer, Bruce Duff, and Josie Cotton over the phone about their song Flatten the Curve. Flatten The Curve is a song about the Coronavirus pandemic. The song was written by Frank Meyer of Streetwalkin' Cheetahs. and Produced by bandmate Bruce Duff. The song features 31 musicians from Josie Cotton to members of Screeching Weasel, The Runaways, The Adolescents and many more! Please share while we are #togetherathome 🏠 Punk and Alt-Rock Luminaries Release Social Distancing Single and Video For "FLATTEN THE CURVE" featuring members of Minutemen, Screeching Weasel, The Runaways, The Supersuckers, The Adolescents, Pansy Division, Josie Cotton, The Streetwalkin' Cheetahs, and more! "It was kind of like 'We Are The World' but less cheesy and definitely not a power ballad." - Frank Meyer, The Streetwalkin' Cheetahs, Blind House Following the release in June of the benefit track "FLATTEN THE CURVE" which features members of Minutemen, Runaways, Redd Kross, and more artists and bands from the punk, indie, and hard rock world, the wide array of contributing musicians decided to create a video to accompany the track. Sequestered and observing social distancing guidelines and rules, many of those participating in the track submitted self-shot footage for the fun and arresting video which premiered on BrooklynVegan. "This video is like a bizarre Rock 'n' Roll alternate reality," says songwriter/vocalist/backing vocalist/guitarist Frank Meyer (The Streetwalkin' Cheetahs, Blind House) who wrote the song and directed the video. "Nowhere else would you see members of Minutemen and The Adolescents rockin' next to members KIX and JetBoy. Where else would you see the singer of The Runaways and Josie Cotton alongside members of Fishbone, Screeching Weasel, and The Supersuckers? It's like my whole record collection made a record together and then a video... Actually I guess they did!" FTC "Flatten the Curve": https://youtu.be/T7uadgElbk8 Artist Quotes: Frank Meyer / The Streetwalkin' Cheetahs, Blind House This was a fun project to edit because all of the artists sent in videos in all sorts of formats with varying degrees of quality and clarity, so the challenge was to make it all as cohesive as possible, yet embrace the limitations. Everyone was recording in or just outside their house, so there's all sorts of different colors, instruments, backgrounds, and setups. At first, I thought this would make it difficult to cut but then I leaned into it and embraced the concept and circumstances and realized this was a really special, unique visual experiment. Deniz Tek / Radio Birdman Always happy to help out for a good cause, but as soon as I heard the track, I knew this would be a total joy to play on. It rips. Suzi Moon / LA Machina, Turbulent Hearts I was thrilled to be asked to contribute to the video for "Flatten The Curve." Even though we are separated during lockdown, this video gave the artists an opportunity to connect again in a super fun way! I love the editing and it just goes to show you how eager people are to be making art despite the stay-at-home order. Steve McDonald / Redd Kross, Melvins I'm stoked to jam alongside all these bad asses and weirdos and for an undeniably worthy cause. Thank you, organizers and co-conspirators, for putting us up to it. I'd also like to thank my son for letting me rock out in his bedroom and my wife for filming the hijinks. Support this record! The human race needs the help! Much love smcd Paul Roessler / Screamers, Twisted Roots: Frank is some kind of weird savant; I don't know how [Bruce] Duff mixed all those tracks, but by the end, it had tipped over from a rock song into some kind of avant garde/Glenn Branca extravaganza. I know Bruce was seriously worried about his computer handling all the data. He said it was touch and go for a while... Interview with Tori Kelly
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Tori Kelly over Zoom video! Please share while we are #togetherathome 🏠 Stream Tori's new EP 'Solitude' here: https://ToriKelly.lnk.to/SolitudeID Even as Tori Kelly evolves her artistry, her warm vocal presence and heartfelt lyrics remain at the core of what makes her one of pop's most luminescent figures. That's been true ever since she debuted with 2015's breezy, soulful Unbreakable Smile, which entered the Billboard 200 at No. 2. Following, with her multi-octave range and emotional might, the L.A.-area native then took home two Grammys — Best Gospel Album and Best Gospel Performance/Song — for her 2018 passion project Hiding Place and the uplifting single "Never Alone." And with her third full-length, 2019's Inspired by True Events, Kelly transformed tremendous personal loss into a brave and bracingly candid work that brought greater depth and maturity to her songwriting than ever before. This year's Solitude EP is the beginning of a new, happier chapter for Kelly, even if the circumstances in which it was created weren't ideal. Self-recorded at home during the spring 2020 quarantine, the five-song effort sports a fresh musical outlook inspired by both the '90s R&B she grew up with and her early days as an earnest, guitar-toting singer-songwriter. "I've never been more thankful for my home studio than I have during this season of being quarantined," Kelly says. "In some ways, it felt like I was going back to my roots, back when I would be in my room making songs and posting covers on YouTube." Solitude nods to her roots with a spare acoustic cover of Drake's "Time Flies," but the song's melancholy vibe is an outlier. In contrast to Inspired by True Events, which wrestled with her parents' separation and grandfather's passing, being quarantined at home with her husband put Kelly in a more joyous headspace. Here, a track like summery throwback "Unbothered" — produced remotely by Jorgen Odegard (P!nk, Yungblud) — finds Kelly sounding empowered while describing the exhilaration of getting over an ex. Another virtual collaboration, with the London-based Monro (Jhene Aiko, Katy B), led to the chilled-out "Value." Kelly had started writing the song at home, and when the producer sent her some beats to write to, one of them "just clicked." She used his laidback trap beats to create a sober backdrop for inspiring lyrics about standing on your own and knowing your worth beyond a relationship. And the gentle ballad "Glad," which she wrote, produced, and recorded completely by herself at home, is a gratitude-filled ode to her husband's unwavering patience and grace while navigating her imperfections. "A lot of change has happened since my last album, so it felt great to just freely write what was on my heart and be inspired by different stories," Kelly says. "I had so much fun creating this EP, and I'm excited to share this new chapter of my music." Meanwhile, Kelly has maintained a busy online performance schedule during quarantine. In late spring, she launched a popular Instagram Live series dubbed "QuaranTEA with Tori" featuring special guests like Demi Lovato, JoJo, and Alessia Cara. The intimate performances brought to mind the adventurous spirit of her fall 2018 Acoustic Sessions tour. Those concerts not only found her testing out a number of songs from Inspired By True Events, but also they established Kelly as a force of nature unafraid to bare her soul with full-hearted songwriting and full-throated performance. Intimate yet powerful, Solitude is the logical next step — a jumpoff point to an even more creatively free future. www.torikellymusic.com https://www.facebook.com/torikellymusic https://www.twitter.com/torikelly https://www.instagram.com/torikelly/ https://www.youtube.com/torikelly We want to hear from you! Interview with more
We had the pleasure of interviewing more over Zoom video! Please share while we are #togetherathome 🏠 more is a new duo comprised of Los Angeles-based songwriters, vocalists, and multi-instrumentalists Kane Ritchotte and Malcolm McRae. The preternaturally talented and synchronized pair paints the modern rock and roll canvas with a powerful, melodic guitar sound mixed with wry intelligence and a tinge of psychedelic flair. Though hailing from different sides of the States, Ritchotte and McRae's unique yet complementary styles fit together with an airtight exuberance that is apparent from the moment the needle hits side one. Steeped in inspiration from legendary alt-pop forebears like John Lennon, Harry Nilsson, and Jeff Lynne, and sunbaked in adventurous yet calculated art behemoths as disparate as Can, Big Star, Gorillaz, Bowie, Kendrick Lamar, The Kinks, Beck, Tame Impala and so much, well, more. The group is set to charge out of the gates with two EPs of warm, shimmery guitar pop later this year. Mentored and produced by legendary producer Tony Berg, more is resolved to set a bold new standard for modern rock and roll by offering a fresh, urgent take on a familiar vibe and sound. Although their kindred spirits and seamless collaboration suggests an ancient bond, Ritchotte and McRae first met through mutual acquaintances in Los Angeles just a few years ago. Ritchotte had made a name for himself as a drummer with acts like Portugal. The Man and Grouplove but was seeking an outlet to exercise his multi-faceted musicianship; meanwhile, McRae, an architecture school dropout, was newly arrived to the LA scene from his Alabama stomping grounds on a quest to expand on his music talents. Recognizing an immediate kinship—in influences, approach, and beyond—as well as a keen adaptability each possessed to absorb the other's cultural recommendations, musical style, and songwriting tendencies, they decided to form a band. "We jumped so quickly into our musical partnership from being perfect strangers but it's turned into a healthy dynamic, both personally and professionally, because our friendship was birthed directly out of a huge degree of musical and artistic respect for one another," Ritchotte says. Malcolm adds: "There's a bit of competitiveness like with siblings, but that's how we've evolved; we've become as close as siblings. It's that closeness that allows for the sum of the two of us to be maybe more than each of us could individually offer." A combination of chops and courage led the duo to work with Berg, whom Ritchotte had charmingly cold-called to set up a collaboration opportunity in the months prior. (As Berg says, "We set out to make a record that we hoped would sound like no other—as it turned out, Kane and Malcolm are capable of nothing else. They both have singular points of view and a strong aversion to following trends.") Focusing on the methods of songwriting and craftsmanship that were perhaps more popular with their analog heroes of earlier eras, more approached their own material with an intense attention to every element along the way, from recording and composition to lyrics and arrangement and beyond. "The general concept of the band from the beginning was to take the craftsmanship of songs that were typically more popular in every other time than now and to try to present them in a way that doesn't sound relic or novelty," Ritchotte says. "We wanted to bring some of the 'songsmithmanship' back into contemporary pop music." The end goal, then, was to create songs as ambitious as they were appealing. As it happens, more's EP 1/2 and 2/2 achieve this with sublime results. Opening with the one-two punch of "Settled In" and "God Is in the Details," EP1 is a rollicking, literate, catchy, and balanced assault that showcases the duo's ability to trade and share vocals, attitudes, and styles with ease. Ending with the lovely, bright "The Way," the record make --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bringinbackpod/support Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bringin-it-backwards--4972373/support. https://bringinitbackwards.com/

Interview with Blackout Balter
We had the pleasure of interviewing Philip Cohen of Blackout Balter over Zoom video! Please share while we are #togetherathome 🏠 Forthcoming debut full-length album. Last EP done with The Killers' Dave Keuning; this one done with Grammy-winner Jeremy Ferguson of Cage The Elephant fame. Phil Cohen (the frontman) is an interesting guy: military veteran (multiple deployments), MIT grad, and entrepreneur. "Red Letter" is an aggressive collision of sounds. It rattles you with an opening riff that wastes no time getting to the point." – American Songwriter "Red Letter" is an aggressive collision of sounds. It rattles you with an opening riff that wastes no time getting to the point." – American Songwriter Nashville's alternative rock band, Blackout Balter released their new album Animal on July 24th. Blackout Balter says, "I wanted 'Red Letter' to punch the listener in the face—to push the idea that rock music is both attitude and melody; passion and nuance." "The album 'Animal' plays with the notion that we're all just animals at our core; and, when we're backed into a corner, sometimes our claws come out and our true core is exposed. In a way, all of these songs are a call to break down doors, to be yourself, and to stop at nothing to do what you want to do." Blackout Balter's feverish attitude is evident right out of the gate with Animal fiery opening track and lead single, "Red Letter." Beginning with a rush of guitar feedback that spills into an onslaught of raw urgency, Cohen and co. paint a portrait of a parallel universe where fame becomes their failing. Animal is a rush of punk and alternative rock energies, ready to seize the moment and arrest the senses. An unapologetic assertion of love, struggle, and leaving, the band's aptly-titled Animal speaks to human nature at its most visceral core: When gut instinct supersedes logic, and our inner animal roars. Fourteen tracks of pure adrenaline offer a stinging introduction that inspires, excites, and pushes us to attack our dreams. Blackout Balter's first full-length album, produced by Grammy-winner Jeremy Ferguson (Cage the Elephant engineer and producer), and assisted by Grammy-winner Emily Lazar (David Bowie, Cold Play), provides 14 tracks of pure adrenaline that inspires. Their first EP, Twist And Bend, featured Dave Keuning (The Killers), and received critical acclaim by the famed Consequence of Sound and Paste Magazine media outlets—two of America's most important music magazines; and the album charted on CMJ's "Top 200" and was named an FMQB "Top 25 Album" while being spun on some of America's most important radio stations, to include KROQ. Interview with The Rad Trads
We had the pleasure of interviewing The Rad Trads over the phone! Please share while we are #togetherathome The Rad Trads are a 5-piece band from NYC. All 5 members of the band write and share lead vocals (most frequently, singing lead vocals on the songs they write). They just released a 5-song EP called 99 in October on May 1, 2020. Prior to that, they had released two cover videos in February -- Alabama Shakes' "Hold On" and Bruce Springsteen's "Atlantic City." The band can be followed on Patreon, where they release exclusive new content weekly such as live performances, explanations of how or why songs were written, acoustic performances, and more. The band has been direct support for the likes of Lake Street Dive, Dr. Dog, Modest Mouse, They Might Be Giants, Bailen, The Motet, and Brandon "Taz" Niederauer. -- Brooklyn-based five-piece The Rad Trads are known for their eclectic take on rock n' roll, which mixes punk rock energy, horn drenched soul, and precise musicianship with a lighthearted but sincere delivery. It's a sound and approach that has come sharply into focus on the band's latest release, 99 in October, out now on Wombat Squad Records. The band recorded the EP while touring in support of their sophomore release On Tap — a world tour which totaled over 80,000 miles and included shows in support of Lake Street Dive, Dr. Dog, Modest Mouse, BAILEN, and The Motet, with dates in Asia, Europe, and across the USA. Along the way, they began writing and performing new material, and the folkiness of their last release began to morph into the hard-edged, anthemic, and frequently poppy sound of 99 In October. "The indie influence was definitely starting to emerge in On Tap," mused saxophonist/keyboardist/vocalist Patrick Sargent. "We were rooted in this Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, Bob Dylan, bluesy folk-rock thing, but bands like Wilco and Spoon were sort of whispering in our ears - In fact, we were once hilariously described as 'Wilco at the circus.' 99 In October marks the moment where we fully modernized our sound, but it doesn't feel like we've left our previous selves entirely behind. Maybe it's because horns are the centerpiece of our instrumentation, but it's always been more of a 'yes and' kind of a thing, where instead of choosing between 'modern' and 'retro' we've just thrown it all together. If Rivers Cuomo hired Sam Buttera from the Louis Prima band to record a saxophone solo, it might sound something like the ending of '99 in October.' Or if Courtney Barnett collaborated with the Hi Records horns, they'd come up with 'Spanish Radio.'" Another key factor in the band's evolution is producer Chris Peck, who mixed On Tap and handled both production and mixing duties on 99 in October. "Chris's sonic palette is very contemporary, and when he shared the On Tap mixes, everyone's ears perked up. So with '99 In October' we fully leaned in," said guitarist Alden Harris McCoy. At times, Peck's role became almost like an invisible 6th member of the band. On "Shouldn't Have To Ask Me Why" he ran the song's bluesy guitar riff through a Roland Space Echo, sending the sound into the echo chamber and back out again in real-time as Harris McCoy played next to him. The final result was described by Bandcamp as "a tense & coiled bit of brass-ornamented rock that snaps & lunges without warning." "Let's Go Walking in the Moonlight" was infused with reverb-laden falsetto harmonies and chiming piano, lending an unexpected backdrop to a song that's eager to unseat "Moondance" as the first dance at your cousin's wedding. Peck also encouraged the band to take big risks, like taking "The Good Stuff" from an up-tempo party anthem straight out of the Springsteen playbook and turning it into a meditative campfire sing along. The resulting rendition became the band's acoustic encore and a moment of intimate connection that fans fondly reminisced about on social media upon the song's release. Please share while we are #togetherathome 🏠 Samantha Crain's new LP 'A Small Death' is was released on July 17 via Ramseur Records/Thirty Tigers and Real Kind Records/Communion Records.
