Interview with Emma Charles
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Emma Charles over Zoom video! Please share while we are #togetherathome 🏠 Check out her new single "Book" out today! Emma co-wrote the song with Doug Schadt (who also co-wrote "Alaska" with Maggie Rogers and Ashe's "Bachelorette" with Finneas O'Connell) and Cara Salimando (who wrote Kesha's "Hymn" and Dua Lipa's "Begging"). https://linktr.ee/emmacharles 22 YO "glowing folk-pop artist" Ones to Watch Emma Charles is able to mix "effortlessly beautiful vocals" American Songwriter Magazine that "flutter upwards serenely through the loneliness and darkness like a beam of radiant light" LA Weekly with "savvy lyricism and intuitive musicianship offering layers not always seen in contemporary mainstream music" Popmatters. Emma was recently chosen as a "What's Next" artist by the world's largest music compilation brand NOW, That's What I Call Music joining previous "What's Next" artists Billie Eilish, Shawn Mendes among others. Introspective, relatable and immensely talented, Emma is poised to be a significant presence on today's music scene. Hailing from the artistic enclave Westport, Ct, in 2019 Emma graduated with honors from the prestigious Berklee College of Music and immediately began performing nationally headlining and opening for singer-songwriters Howie Day and Tyler Hilton. Now, LA based, Emma is writing, recording and continuing to perform. She returns east regularly to continue her long standing collaboration with producer Doug Schadt (Maggie Rogers, SHAED, Ashe). Says Doug "It's rare as a producer to come across an artist who is completely open to experimentation, while maintaining their vision of what a song is supposed to be. I think the results speak for themselves. Working on Emma's latest material with her was an absolute joy, and I can't wait for what's next." Emma's recent releases have been streamed collectively well over 250,000 times and she will be releasing four additional new songs over the next several months. We want to hear from you! Interview with RINI
We had the pleasure of interviewing RINI over Zoom video! Please share while we are #togetherathome 🏠 Admitting your R&B favorites is to generally risk ridicule. The genre is so overrun with guilty pleasures that it's rare that a repeat-worthy artist can also serve as a signifier of highbrow taste — but RINI is one such talent. A singer-instrumentalist with such undeniable talent, fans are quickly captivated upon discovering of the young Australian. It's easy to understand why: not only does his sultry falsetto see critics comment, "I'm so mad at myself for almost not clicking," but RINI's remarkably poetic sound has already begun to capture the hearts of millions. "When I really started writing, I just wanted to make songs that express my emotions and tell my story," the 22-year-old explains. "Sometimes now at shows the audience sing word for word, which is truly amazing to see. The connection with the audience is such an experience." A talented instrumentalist, Melbourne-raised Justerini Sandoval went to great lengths to become a seasoned performer at a young age — playing guitar in front of his church congregation as a child and street performing in his teens. The success of these endeavors sent venturing down many other avenues to develop his music. Bandmates began to teach him drums, bass and keys to supplement his singing. YouTube became a key resource for the aspiring musician, with both RINI uploading covers of R&B chart- toppers and teaching himself production from tutorial videos. With his self-titled premiere project in 2017, RINI set about scratching the itches of contemporary-soul lovers. Nonetheless, it was when formulating his latest EP, After the Sun, the singer says he really found his sound. "It was about just wanting to get my sound out there and see what people thought of it," RINI claims of his early output. "I would be given beats from friends saying, 'Just try it out.' I would be doing all these different things, writing about my life story." He continues: "Now my music is about what is actually going on with me. During [After the Sun] I was going through relationships, so I prefer to talk about what's going on with my life at the moment and that resonates with people because we usually all have similar life experiences." RINI's sensuous style now draws frequent comparisons to revered crooners, Frank Ocean and Daniel Caesar, and he's similarly inspired by musicians' whose output feels "real." RINI often opts for live arrangements, with many of his songs the product of a jam session or simple chord progression. "I try to keep it really simple," he says of his approach to songwriting, crediting love and life experience for his creative process. To further hone his craft, the Melbournite has now moved to the world's music capital: Los Angeles. "I just wanted to keep growing and evolving," RINI shares. "To me, relocating to switch up the energy is really important. You just catch a whole new vibe, which stimulates your creativity. And he already has. The change of scenery catalyzed something of sonic shift for RINI, and he's welcoming the opportunity to experiment. He assures the next project won't be a full departure from the more "mellow" music to which his fans have been accustomed, but recently the singer's begun gravitating toward a faster tempo. And if his speed towards stardom continues at this rate, we should all prime ourselves for a new sound to come from the up-and-coming Australian artist — no guilt necessary. "I'm still getting the hang of it, but I feel prepared to take off. I'm ready." Keep an eye out for RINI's anticipated TK, out TK. We want to hear from you! Interview with Gayle
We had the pleasure of interviewing more over Zoom video! Please share while we are #togetherathome 🏠 It's hard to believe that a 15-year-old artist who, at age 9, would sing to anyone and everyone who would listen (and many who wouldn't) at boutiques, farmers' markets, and any public gathering, would have the insight to create an entire song around this line. But GAYLE, who moved to Nashville at 12 and immediately became immersed in the city's legendary songwriting scene, kept hearing that she needed to dig deeper and to make her songs more personal -- that THAT was the way to connect with listeners. "Cut the crap, stop being scared, and be vulnerable," she remembers as her marching orders in songwriting sessions. And the result is a collection of honest, uninhibited songs that connect with and speak to listeners on a profound, sometimes uncomfortable, level. "When I put my part of my soul in a song and someone allows it to reach theirs, the goal is for us to have soul sex -- it's intimate, vulnerable, and true." "orange peel" is the fourth song to be released by 15-year-old pop artist/songwriter GAYLE.,- According to GAYLE, "'orange peel' is about the desire to love someone without the negativity of being in a relationship that can end. Wanting to take all of the pain out of the equation to just love the person." We want to hear from you! Interview with The Man Who
We had the pleasure of interviewing The Man Who over Zoom video! Please share while we are #togetherathome Following the release of their debut EP last year, Bet On You, Toronto-based, alt-indie trio The Man Who return with a brand-new track "Something To Believe" on July 23rd via Virgin Records. The anthemic track arrives alongside a powerful remixed version today produced by Calvary. The Calvary remix was used in a MLB Network piece, "New Faces in New Places" that detailed every big name who changed teams this year. The piece aired on Thursday, July 23 and Friday, July 24 on MLB Network as part of Major League Baseball's return. Comprising David Walsh (lead vocals, guitar, keyboards), Chad Walsh (bass/electric guitar, keyboards, background vocals) and Frank Goerz (drums), The Man Who takes its name from a Ralph Waldo Emerson quote, "The world makes way for the man who knows where he's going." The Man Who traces its roots back to 2015, when a tour took Toronto-based Chad Walsh to Newfoundland, where he re-connected with his cousin, David Walsh, who was also a musician. The two began a long-distance collaboration, experimenting with vintage synthesizers and throwback hip-hop drum loops. David eventually moved to Toronto, where the two cousins recruited drummer Frank Goerz. The Man Who spent the most part of last year touring across North America including a support slot with BANNERS. Across all of their songs, The Man Who has already racked up more than 20 million global streams and garnered praise from Clash, Hillydilly, Elicit Magazine, Music Connection, plus many more. Interview with Maddox Jones
We had the pleasure of interviewing Maddox Jones over Zoom video! Please share while we are #togetherathome 🏠 British singer and songwriter Maddox Jones unveils "Headspace", the title track and first single to be lifted from his debut EP, released on July 10, 2020 via Radikal/ Quattro Records. The video premiered on American Songwriter, who called the track "a song that starts out with a simple, solemn synth-based riff, but builds into a complex, cathartic danceable anthem." "Headspace" is Maddox Jones' first release as a solo artist. While fronting the band Born Stranger is never an easy task - and Jones had his fair share of experience playing and collaborating with other artists - standing alone and allowing his deepest emotions to flow through some of the most personal songs he has ever written was a completely different experience. Free from any restrictions, this new creative process allowed the talented artist to develop a vulnerable body of work while exploring a more diverse sound palette. The result is a personal journey through hedonism, love, loss, and the pain of growing up, all echoed by Maddox's honest vocals. Written by Maddox Jones, recorded and produced in a single day with a close friend and producer Dave Crawford, "Headspace" moves through an initial sparse production to a complex synth-washed pop number, before turning into a hands-in-the-air, eyes-closed soundscape, while Maddox builds his warm tenor to a propulsive chorus. "It's a song that kept me company in the dead of night when I was used to sleeping next to somebody and found myself alone. It can force you to take a proper look at yourself when you only have yourself for company. I wonder if maybe lots of people might be feeling a bit like this right now, if they're isolating alone in this pandemic. It's about searching for a connection with someone when they're going through something hard and you just want to be there for them, to be a safe space for them." These emotions have been translated into warm and comforting visuals with the evoking video accompanying the single, a collection of instagrammable moments perfectly depicting the song's yearning for meaningful connection. With "Headspace" Maddox Jones is set to make an impact on the international music scene and take his rightful place as one of the most exciting emerging artists of the year. We want to hear from you! Interview with Kid Dad
We had the pleasure of interviewing KID DAD over Zoom video! Please share while we are #togetherathome 🏠 KID DAD's new track 'Limbo' off their debut album "In A Box" (out 21st August 2020) is a song that deals with feeling unsafe, hassled, or even abused. As vocalist and guitarist Marius Vieth says, it's about being "caught between uncertainty and fear, searching for something real to hold on to, in search of hope." The band has chosen to convey this in a music video which tells the story of a child trying to escape domestic violence and have started a campaign called "Safe In A Box" where they are raising money for NSPCC (UK) and SOS-Kinderdorf (Germany) who are helping children that have become victims of domestic violence. 'In A Box' will be released 21 August via Long Branch Records. Interview with Ghost Town Remedy
We had the pleasure of interviewing Ghost Town Remedy over Zoom video! Please share while we are #togetherathome 🏠 Meet Ghost Town Remedy: an energetic power-pop/punk quartet hailing from Nashville, TN. They are thrilled to share their newly released singles, "Therapy," streaming everywhere, and featured in Substream Magazine. "It's kind of a funny story actually," says lead singer and guitarist TJ Maher. "The song itself came about during an argument with my ex. She basically told me, 'I can't be your girlfriend and your therapist. You're going to have to pick one.' I started writing the chorus right there mid-fight. 'Therapy' for me, is a song about recognizing that you can't always do everything on your own and that it's ok to ask for help if you need it," continues Maher. "Everyone has their burdens and we've all dealt with depression in some form or another." Ghost Town Remedy exhibits "truly shred worthy guitar riffs…with subtle hints of Nintendo-Rock" says Under Bright Lights. With unique songwriting, 4 part harmonies, melodic guitars, fuzzy bass lines, and massive drums you're sure to have a good time. Ghost Town Remedy formed in 2011 after TJ Maher (Guitarist) and Steve Lane (Drummer) met while performing in a local Christmas pageant in Northern Virginia. They found themselves learning tunes off of Weezer's Blue Album instead of practicing the required material. After years of circulating the DIY scene in NoVA, the band relocated to Nashville in 2016 and released their first effort "Caffeine Dreams" in September of 2017. Shortly after that release, Rich Ridgell (Bass) and Jordan Winborne (Guitar) rounded out the lineup. GTR is currently putting the final touches on their upcoming album with plans to release in summer 2020. "Therapy" and "Holy Hangover" is out now! Interview with Noah Guthrie
We had the pleasure of interviewing Noah Guthrie over Zoom video! Please share while we are #togetherathome 🏠 Music has been at the forefront of emerging singer-songwriter Noah Guthrie's life for as long as he can remember. With his family's musical roots running deep, Guthrie's dream was always to be an artist and musician, but he didn't realize he could make it a reality until 11th grade when he started posting unique cover videos on YouTube. At that point, he knew he had the opportunity to turn his dream into a career. Although his musical journey as an artist has been exciting and fulfilling thus far, he still faces difficulties - including trying to distance himself from past endeavors and find his own identity. While he's received national attention for his creative YouTube covers, including posting a blues-filled version of LMFAO's "Sexy and I Know It," which has received more than 26 million views, and his pivotal role as Roderick Meeks on FOX's hit TV show, "Glee," it's clear to see that Noah's real talent shines through putting pen to paper and crafting original music. While he was able to showcase his unscripted musical talents with his semi-finals run on season 13 of NBC's "America's Got Talent," he is still working hard to get people to see the original singer-songwriter Noah Guthrie that he's always wanted to be. Though he's pursuing a career as an artist, it's never been about becoming a famous celebrity for Noah. In fact, the down-to-earth rising star still lives in his hometown of Greer, SC. A safe, comfortable place to come home to when he gets off the road, the small town has positively influenced his creative process. Not only has it allowed him to relax and explore different musical ideas when writing, but even better, he has unlimited access to the studio his brother works at right down the road. While Noah started learning to play bass as a teenager, he fell in love with the acoustic guitar after receiving an abandoned instrument from his dad's office. From then on, the acoustic guitar has been instrumental in his songwriting process; Noah starts with a feeling and a guitar, and the lyrics follow. For him, songwriting has always been a form of direct expression, something Noah learned when he wrote his first song about missing his grandad after he passed away. Through a few chords, he was able to get his feelings out into a song, and his bedroom recording sessions didn't stop there. While Noah has been successful writing on his own, he also appreciates the special collaborative effort of co-writing and tries to learn from new songwriters each time he visits Nashville. Noah describes his sound as an alt country/Americana blend that is similar to Chris Stapleton's country/rock tracks. Yet, the unique soulfulness in his richly textured voice and the unmistakable Southern influence in his music makes him capable of conveying emotion only a handful of artists can in today's musical landscape. From his older sweet tune "Til It Thunders," one of Noah's favorite songs about coping with a long-distance relationship, to his newest single, "Hell or High Water," a gritty track about navigating life, Noah's versatility and distinct voice is evident. However, Noah isn't trying to box himself into any specific genre; for him, it's just about making good, honest music – music that just sounds like him. Differing from his previous polished, pop-sounding songs, the now more experienced singer-songwriter is focused on personally connecting with others through impactful storytelling and showing the real "Noah Guthrie" in his new music. Noah has performed across the U.S., built a strong following through social media and TV, and released two critically-acclaimed albums. He has also performed on NBC's Today Show and Tonight Show, Hallmark Channel's Home & Family, and ABC's Dancing with the Stars. Noah has opened for a wide variety of artists, including Ed Sheeran, Neon Trees, Ben Rector, --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bringinbackpod/support Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bringin-it-backwards--4972373/support. https://bringinitbackwards.com/
