Interview with In Parallel
We had the pleasure of interviewing In Parallel over Zoom video! The seeds of In Parallel were planted late at night almost 5+ years ago in the back room of a picture frame shop. With nothing more than a looped electronic drum sample and a few guitars, the first notes became the framework of the song "Bridge and Tunnel." This particular song and its lyric "walk through waves and wade where others won't - choose your words, say what others don't" became a mission statement of sorts - a musical rebirth for its four members. It took multiple recordings for the band to get all the sounds on their debut EP 'Broken Codes' correct - so much so that they scrapped the first two versions entirely. The band was inspired by their love of dark 80's pop and 90's shoegaze and post-hardcore - creating a sound that aims to balance contrastingly melodic, expansive and ambient moments. In Parallel consists of Lance Black, Jesse Fine, Ryan Parrish and Mark Nash. The band recorded the EP in Nashville with the help of their most devoted fans from previous projects (Celebrity/Hopesfall) through a crowdfunding campaign. Bypassing the traditional structure of the music industry gave the three-piece group the freedom to lean into technology, ultimately treading new territory both sonically and lyrically. In Parallel are debuting the first track and corresponding music lyric video off their upcoming new EP "Fashioner" out September 4th on Wiretap Records. We want to hear from you! Interview with Karl Michael
We had the pleasure of interviewing Karl Michael over Zoom video! "If there's one thing you need to know about me," says Karl Michael, "it's that I never give up. Ever. I'm as persistent as it gets." If Michael's improbable life story isn't proof enough of that, just take a listen to his extraordinary new single, "Highs And The Lows." Stirring and soulful, the track showcases the British-born songwriter's remarkable gifts as both a craftsman and a performer, mixing addictive hooks and slick, mesmerizing production with soaring vocals and deep, probing lyrics. Recorded in Michael's newly-adopted hometown of Nashville, TN, it's a mature, philosophical slice of R&B-tinged pop, one that takes stock of the rocky path that's brought him from the depths of despair to the heights of success and right back down again more times than he cares to count. See, Michael's already written with some of the biggest names in music and penned massive hits for plenty of other artists, but now, he's finally ready to do it for himself, and the result is some of the most honest, vulnerable, and captivating material he's ever created. "I hope my career can serve as an example," Michael says. "I truly believe that anything's possible if you want it bad enough and you're willing to put in the work." Growing up in a rough neighborhood, Michael relied on that resilience to beat the odds and break from the cycle of crime and poverty that surrounded him. At 16, he struck out on his own for Nashville, where a family friend had offered to help him get a fresh start. When he landed in the States, though, Michael found himself singled out by a customs officer who was suspicious of his status as an unaccompanied minor. Despite possessing the appropriate paperwork, he was detained, questioned for more than five hours, and eventually handcuffed and forcibly sent back to England. "I couldn't believe it," Michael says. "I was devastated. But I wasn't going to let it stop me." Back in Britain, Michael picked up a job working at McDonalds to make ends meet while he reassessed his future. Obsessed with films and movie stars, he'd always dreamed of becoming an actor, and when a friend tipped him off about open auditions at the Midlands Academy of Dance and Drama, it seemed like a golden ticket. "I had no training in the arts whatsoever, and I certainly didn't have the money for school, but I went and auditioned anyway," Michael remembers. "They wanted to see some acting, so I did a scene. They wanted me to dance, so I did the worm. They asked me to sing, so I walked over to the window, spit out my gum, and sang them a tune. When I opened my eyes, I had a full ride scholarship." As a youngster, Michael hadn't been exposed to a whole lot of music, but at school, it became his singular obsession. He fell in love with rap and grime and soul and R&B, and he supplemented his natural gifts with a fierce work ethic. As much as he loved performing, though, he found the school to be an imperfect fit (he remembers some of the more well-off students mocking him for having to work part-time at the local co-op), and so, after six months, he set out on his own again. Michael didn't realize it at the time, but he was about to begin a long, strange odyssey through all the promises and pitfalls the music industry had to offer. Over the course of the next decade, he would land not one, but two major label record deals, only to watch them both fall apart before they could even get off the ground. He would make more money than he'd ever seen in his life, only to wind up broke again, sharing a cramped one-room apartment with a sibling while tending bar and handing out flyers to pay the rent. And he would become a star on one of the most popular singing shows on UK television, only to find that the success left him feeling lonelier and more depressed than ever before. "At the end of the day," Michael explains, "being in some label-made band or singing someone else's songs on TV, that --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bringinbackpod/support Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bringin-it-backwards--4972373/support. https://bringinitbackwards.com/

Author, podcaster, and music industry veteran Tom Mullen has announced a September 7, 2020 release date for Anthology of Emo Volume 2, the highly anticipated follow-up to 2017's acclaimed Anthology of Emo Volume 1, which sold out in less than a year and garnered praise and coverage from the likes of Vice/Noisey, The New York Times, Brooklyn Vegan, Kerrang, UPROXX, Billboard, SiriusXM, Alternative Press and many more. Volume 1 will also be re-released in early September, the title's first reprint in 3 years. The books are now available to pre-order separately or as a specially-priced bundle with a limited poster at www.AnthologyofEmo.com. Anthology of Emo Volume 2 continues what the first volume started, with interviews from heavyweights in the music genre including Jim Adkins (Jimmy Eat World), Chris Conley (Saves the Day), Bob Nanna (Braid), authors and scene veterans Trevor Kelley and Leslie Simon, and the final interview of emo scene legend, Jon Bunch (Sense Field) prior to his untimely death in 2017. The book includes rare photographs and printed ephemera, an introduction by Tom Mullen, and a forward by writer and author Luke O'Neil (Welcome to Hell World). About Anthology of Emo Volume 2 In 2017, after 100+ interviews with artists and those involved with the emo and hardcore scene for the critically acclaimed Washed Up Emo Podcast, Tom Mullen, on the 10th anniversary of WashedUpEmo.com, introduced Anthology of Emo. The book, selling out in less than a year, compiled the best stories from the podcast and features rare and unseen photos and ephemera. The follow-up, Volume 2, picks up where the previous book left off and features interviews, quotes, and more from key figures and veterans of the scene. For a word that's often misunderstood, the Anthology of Emo series is an informative companion and faithful guide to the genre of emo. Tom Mullen is a music industry executive and veteran podcaster. He's spent time at Atlantic, Equal Vision, Vagrant, TVT, EMI and Sony, where he was a 2016 Clio and Cannes Lions winner for his work with Bob Dylan. In 2007, he founded WashedUpEmo.com, a destination for the entire history of emo. The site and podcast has been featured in The New Yorker, AV Club, Pitchfork, The New York Times, Paste, Billboard, Spin, Village Voice, Stereogum, Chicago Reader, Noisey, and Brooklyn Vegan. In 2011, it expanded to a podcast and DJ night in NYC. In 2014, he launched IsThisBandEmo.com, a site helping the world understand which bands are emo or not with a smile and a wink. A proud native of Vermont, he lives in Los Angeles and spends his free time documenting and archiving the emo genre for future generations. A now popular outlet, audio, proved fruitful almost instantly in 2011. The Washed Up Emo Podcast started after Tom realized a noticeable void of podcasts from the genre. Utilizing music industry connections and his background as a college radio DJ, it quickly snowballed with critical acclaim after a few episodes and now has over 1 million plays and continues to be the definitive podcast for the emo genre. The never-ending mountain of guests over the almost decade of episodes have included Jawbreaker, The Promise Ring, Thursday, Taking Back Sunday, Piebald, The Get Up Kids, Jimmy Eat World, Mineral, and American Football. Now, after 170+ episodes, the Washed Up Emo Podcast still has one goal. To represent and document the entire history of emo for all fans of the genre. We want to hear from you! Interview with The Black Moods
We had the pleasure of interviewing The Black Moods over Zoom audio! THE BLACK MOODS are steadily building on the buzz and chart success of their second album SUNSHINE, released May 8 (via the independent label Steelhorse Entertainment/The Fuel) whose title track is currently in the Top 20 at #17 on Billboard's Active Rock charts. Their three previous singles also debuted in the Top 30 charts as follows: "Bad News" (#24), "Bella Donna" (#29) and "Whatcha Got (#30). THE BLACK MOODS merge guitar crunch and tight songcraft with urgent, blunt lyrics about romantic desire and conflict and recently signed to agency powerhouse CAA under agent Joe Mott. During quarantine the band have moved their home studio to the Ozarks (hometown of vocalist/guitarist Josh Kennedy) to write & record material for their next release which will include a remotely recorded track with legendary producer Eddie Kramer (Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones). SUNSHINE was recorded with Grammy Award-winning producer Johnny Karkazis who turned their rehearsal space into a makeshift studio in order to capture the energy of their live performance which has seen them tour alongside diverse acts including The Doors' Robbie Krieger, Gin Blossoms, Shinedown, Jane's Addiction, Whitesnake, Adelitas Way, Otherwise and many more. They were also booked to perform at Epicenter festival until it was cancelled due to the pandemic. We want to hear from you! Interview with Frank Turner
We had the pleasure of interviewing Frank Turner over Zoom video! Just how often does the leader of one of your favorite bands ask you to do a split album? One where his band covers your songs? It's the situation Frank Turner found himself in last year, when Fat Mike of NOFX asked if he wanted to do a split covers album. "And I shit the bed and said, 'Fucking of course I do! That sounds incredible," Turner recalls. 'West Coast Vs. Wessex' does sound incredible: NOFX filtering five songs from Turner's sizeable solo back catalogue through their singular sensibility, with Turner reciprocating to record five of his personal favorites from NOFX's 37-years-and-counting career. But these aren't simply double-time versions of Turner's folk-punk tunes or acoustic re-workings of NOFX's iconic SoCal punk anthems - both took time to play with the possibilities each other's music presented. "I listened to all his records, and I picked the ones that I thought I could make more interesting," notes Fat Mike. "What I did is change a lot of chords. Frank, he beats me in the singing department. So I can't sing better than he can, but I can maybe throw in a melody here or there or chord that he hadn't thought of." Turner took a similar approach. "I didn't want to just do straight covers of anything. I wanted to try and pick songs where I felt like me and my band could bring something different to the table," he says. "But it did strike me that it would be cool to demonstrate to the casual NOFX fan, who doesn't know who I am, that I am actually a fan. I didn't just go to Spotify and pick the five most-listened-to songs." For the record, only one of his choices appears on Spotify's top five for NOFX: 'Bob', which Turner here transforms into a wistful country song. "Everything he picked was from the '90s, so I took that as it's okay to mostly do his early stuff too," says Fat Mike, who channeled '90s NOFX for their interpretations, transforming 'Thatcher F*cked The Kids' into a jaunty companion to 'Philthy Phil Philanthropist'. Turner and his band, The Sleeping Souls, recorded their songs between their rehearsal space and during tour commitments, whilst NOFX recorded at Fat Mike's Six Floggs studio, with production by the D-Composers (Fat Mike, Johnny Carey, BAZ Bastien, Yotam Ben Horin). In West Coast Vs. Wessex, the Frank Turner-Fat Mike Mutual Admiration Society has produced 10 hooky re-imaginings of each others' music - the novelty may pique listeners' curiosity, but it's the songs that will keep them coming back. Interview with The Get Right Band
We had the pleasure of interviewing The Get Right Band over Zoom video! The Get Right Band released their fifth album on May 23, 2020. Itchy Soul explodes with fresh ideas and original production--voices fade into synths, drums distort and echo through space, crunchy guitars twist and bend and rage, the bass is one moment heavy and driving, the next hypnotic and groovy. The Get Right Band filters 60's/70's psychedelia and 90's alternative rock through a modern lens--as if Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Nirvana co-wrote an album produced by Danger Mouse and Dan Auerbach. There's a new level of maturity and confidence to GRB's fifth release. This is all-in, maximalist rock n' roll for grown up people (kids and adults alike) who know the world is falling apart, who know social media is rotting our brains, who know politicians are taking away our rights, and who know that art and beauty and music and love and action are the antidotes. Itchy Soul will make you remember the power of music. In the first few weeks of its release, Itchy Soul has been featured on WTF with Marc Maron, Live For Live Music, and tastemaker radio stations like KEXP, WTMD, and WNCW. Eschewing the trappings and limitations of conventional recording approaches, The Get Right Band recorded and mixed the majority of the record outside of a studio. Programs had to be learned, gear bought and borrowed, techniques trial and errored. In giving themselves the time and freedom to experiment, to obsess over sounds, and to record exactly what, when, and how they wanted, they made something singular and compelling. The album features a collaboration with comedian and podcaster Marc Maron on the gritty, existential track "However Broken It Is." After many hours in the van listening to Maron's WTF podcast, GRB started collecting particularly poetic quotes and eventually turned them into a co-written song with Maron. Even the album cover stands out as something unique and creative--it's augmented reality art! Just download the app Artivive and point your phone at the cover to see the artwork come to life. Compared to their previous work, the new album moves one step closer to pop with catchy hooks and modern production, and one step closer to psychedelia with experimental effects and layers of sound--all the while bringing the very best of their signature high-energy indie rock. The end result is sure to resonate with fans of modern rockers like Arctic Monkeys, Cage The Elephant, and My Morning Jacket. The lyrics of Itchy Soul take on real world problems, from the very personal--the title track explores themes of self-acceptance, isolation, and agitation--to the very global--"Future Blood" is a climate change call-to-action with driving, distorted guitars. "Fire With Rain" combines danceable grooves with well-crafted poetry about the highs and lows of life as a traveling musician: "here we are hawking magic to the disbelieving masses, with a pink neon sign lit by vaudeville's ashes--we fight fire with rain." The Get Right Band's origin story goes back to 1998, when singer/songwriter/guitarist Silas Durocher poached bassist/singer Jesse Gentry from another middle school band. A lifelong friendship and musical partnership developed (along with a quirky shared sense of humor and their own made up language), and the two formed The Get Right Band in 2011. With the addition of Jian-Claude Mears, the group gained a jet engine, powerhouse drummer (and a new best friend), and stepped into the great tradition of genre-bending power trios. The Get Right Band has shared the stage with Everclear, UB40, Rusted Root, Dr. Dog, Smash Mouth, Lifehouse, Dawes, Ozomatli, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, and Victor Wooten. They have appeared on NPR's World Cafe, Paste Studios, and Nashville's Music City Roots television show, and have performed at major festivals and venues including The Fillmore, The Orange Peel, Brooklyn Bowl, Theatre of the Living Arts, The Hamilton, Floy --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bringinbackpod/support Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bringin-it-backwards--4972373/support. https://bringinitbackwards.com/

Interview with Hey, King!
We had the pleasure of interviewing Natalie and Taylor of Hey, King! When you first hear indie rock act Hey, King! it immediately becomes clear that each musical moment is rendered with precision, care, and a whole lot of heart. These are powerful and humanity affirming songs from songwriter, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Natalie London and her partner, vocalist and percussionist Taylor Plecity. A formidable and boisterous live force that often results in an eight piece orchestral band, they've previously toured extensively with Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals. Ben Harper produced Hey, Kings! debut EP, Be Still, which was just released, as well as their full length set for a 2021 release. Both records are being released via ANTI-. If Hey, King! makes resilient songs, it's because London has overcome a life's worth of near-death illness. Though she had started her career while at Columbia University, she contracted Lyme disease and co-infections Babesia and Bartonella on an early tour, forcing her to be bedridden for over four years. "During that time, I couldn't walk, talk, read or write, I lost a great deal of my memory. I felt like I had a complete chance at a brand new life and everything from my writing to what I listen to reflects that," says London. She adds, "Starting my life over, I felt like a kid again. There was so much unharnessed passion, longing and a need for both adventure and home." As London navigated her recovery, these free and genuine new songs became part of a new band called Hey, King! which gets its name from the ferocious story Where The Wild Things Are. As London began to explore her new musical identity and lease on life, she met Plecity. Their relationship evolved to the couple making music together. "While it makes for a really complex dynamic, you get to share every incredible experience you've been waiting your whole life for with the person that you love the most," says London. Their obvious chemistry is bursting through songs like the smoldering "Half Alive." Boasting dual vocal melodies and some spine-tingling harmonies, it's a cathartic taste of what Hey, King! can accomplish, especially during the raw declaration "I was only half alive before I loved you." "Half Alive" was produced by Ben Harper and mixed by Sheldon Gomberg (Fiona Apple, Lucinda Williams). "We got really lucky because Ben gave us a ton of freedom to record the songs how we imagined them," says London. She adds, "Ben's audience feels like they are attending church every time they see him live, they are so deeply moved. Touring with Ben and watching that connection with the audience helped us evolve greatly in the way we play." On the confessional "Don't Let Me Get Away," London belts over impassioned acoustic guitar strums, "I'll tell myself to fuck it up first just in case / Tell myself anything in hopes to keep me safe." Few artists can turn their vulnerability into such vibrant power. While Hey, King! have been able to find their resonance through bare bones and simple singles, their song "Lucky" proves how compelling and explosive their sound can get. Plecity explains the track: "We want to make music that we feel our younger selves needed to hear. With 'Lucky', we wrote what we'd want to say to ourselves during the times where our lives were the hardest, and tell that child it is going to be okay." The two sing, "Let me go, let me go back and tell me / 'I'll survive and say someday you will find me." It's a spellbinding and powerful moment, complete with a vivid horn section and a hair-raising chorus. It's the kind of song that feels like an anchor, one where you're supported and loved by the people walking alongside you. In 2021, Hey, King! will release their Ben Harper-produced debut album on ANTI-. We want to hear from you! Interview with Emily Zuzik
We had the pleasure of interviewing Emily Zuzik over Zoom video! Emily Zuzik is an L.A. based Americana singer-songwriter who has planted her musical roots in a unique eclectic blend of alt-country, modern, rhythm & blues and rock music. She brings to her songs a woman's vulnerability and strength in the tradition of Patsy Cline and Madonna. As a singer-songwriter, her music captures the film-noir essence of Los Angeles' haunted past infused with the soul of the Memphis Stax sound. Her songs compel and engage as they call to mind her musical kinship with Carole King and Rickie Lee Jones. Her voice is warm as she seduces the listener in a way reminiscent of Sheryl Crow and Liz Phair. Over the last two decades as a solo artist, Emily has released 14 solo and collaborative albums, EPs and singles. In 2016, Emily teamed with Tim Lefebvre (Tedeschi Trucks Band, David Bowie's Blackstar) to create an experimental EP titled, Angelenos. In 2011, Emily was a featured singer and cowriter of "The Low Hum" on Moby's Destroyed album. We want to hear from you! Interview with Anna Sofia
We had the pleasure of interviewing Anna Sofia over Zoom video! Through a pure perspective only an insider could possess, Anna Sofia chronicles these moments and so much more in her music. The 16-year-old Toronto singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist threads together narrative pop with the scope of a classic nineties teen flick and the unpredictability of 21st century genre-bending. Streamed over 2 million times independently as of 2019 and acclaimed by Ones To Watch, Lyrical Lemonade, and Complex who dubbed her, "a prodigious new talent,"she places listeners in the front row of her world on the introductory 2020 EP, Self Aware Bitch [Electric Feel/Republic Records], and her forthcoming full-length debut. "I write about what's really happening to me," she explains. "It's girl drama, my friends liking guys, something that happened with me and a boy, house parties, and trying to just be myself. I didn't hear a lot of other artists speaking this way about high school and growing up, so I wanted to tell my story." She began working towards telling this story as a child. The budding songstress went from competitive dancing since three-years-old to singing at community events, in plays, and around the sleepy ski resort town of Blue Mountain she calls home. At the age of four, she started piano lessons before eventually picking up ukulele and guitar. Inspired by everyone from Queen and Elton John to Tyler, the Creator, Rex Orange County, and Mac DeMarco, she carefully crafted a signature style of her own rooted in traditional instrumentation a la guitar, drums, and bass. "Not all of the songs are love songs," she says. "I'm writing about school life in a really personal way with authentic-sounding instruments." In 2019, she began turning heads with the indie releases "Meaner Girl" and "I Try" before landing a deal with Republic Records. Now, she introduces Self Aware Bitch with the single "No Fun." A shuffling beat and shimmery keys collide with an irresistible chant—"No fun, that's the only fun I know"—backed by quirky, boisterous horns. "I went to a party, and the song pretty much explains everything that happened that night," she goes on. "There were kids breaking windows and all of this crazy stuff going down. The story shifts to the next day when you just want to chill at home all super tired." Meanwhile, "Self Aware Bitch" coasts along on hummable guitar punctuated by nostalgic vignettes of "people kissing in the stairwell," "texting my momma," and "lunch line down the block." It culminates on the chant, "Just call me a self aware bitch, sorry, at least I'm being honest, surrounded by the gossip, at least I say it loud." "I'm breaking with the trends," she asserts. "There are so many people who want to change you. I'm not going to change for anyone. It's about standing by who you are." In the end, Anna's story will relate, because she actually lives this… "I hope when people listen to me, they can get confidence in themselves," she leaves off. "That's why I'm writing the way I am. It makes me feel confident, and I want to share that." We want to hear from you!
