Interview with JanaeSound

We had the pleasure of interviewing JanaeSound over Zoom video! JanaeSound is a powerhouse rock singer that hails from St. Louis where she began cultivating her love for music at the tender age of 9 through the Opera Theatre of St. Louis. Currently based in Portland, Maine, JanaeSound is known for producing the most diverse showcase in Maine, the nation's least diverse state. The show, BeyDay, featured 38 people of color, 33 women of color and 31 black/african artists. She most recently produced and curated a showcase of Black artists called Juneteenth! which was pre-recorded live at the empty State Theatre to raise money for local organizations that empower Portland's Black Community. The project was beautifully executed from pitch to livestream in nine days during a pandemic. The technical marvel included a performance by JanaeSound accompanied by a live guitarist and social distant choir via video link . A partnership with Edovo made the concert available to incarcerated folks in 150 facilities nationwide. The livestream raised over $10,000 for Indigo Arts Alliance and Black Owned Maine, and was viewed more than 10k times, making huge waves as Portland, Maine has a population of >60k people. Currently, we are celebrating the release of her new single "Feared", which premiered during Juneteenth!, in which she encourages listeners to acknowledge and release their fear so they may find joy and walk in their purpose. Interview with Splitstep

We had the pleasure of interviewing Matt Golub of Splitstep over Zoom video! The Denver, CO based acoustic, rock collective Splitstep deliver a bright sound with their melodic choruses, musical builds, and heartfelt lyrics. The band is currently completing work on their debut album Kaleidoscope. They have released two single songs "Highway" and"The Shoulder" with a video for "The Shoulder" premiering now: https://folknrock.com/videos/exclusive-video-premiere-splitstep-the-shoulder At its core, Splitstep is guitarist/singer/songwriter Matt Golub and drummer Daniel Carrillo. Together, they are creating a musical collective by inviting a rotating cast of musicians and vocalists to join them in the crafting of their original music. For "The Shoulder" singer Ashlei Brianne joins Golub as the twosome seem to effortlessly blend their vocals in this vulnerable and honest song. Also lending their musical chops to the song is Andy Sydow on piano, Kevin MacKinnon on bass and of course Daniel Carrillo on drums. "When people hear this song, I want them to understand the "me too" movement from two different perspectives. Understandably, it is difficult for any woman who has experienced trauma with men in the past to open up and be comfortable with a new man in her life. At the same time, however, there are good men living in this new progressive world that are struggling to gain trust in a new, budding relationship. I certainly have had times where I see so much potential in a new relationship, only to have it plagued by the woman's past experiences with men. I wrote this song to give a voice to the people who struggle and try so hard to gain trust from someone that they care about. I hope this song and its music video illustrates a story that every modern, single person can relate to" – Says singer and writer Matt Golub. When he is not writing and recording, Matt is a medical student at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, CO. Daniel (aka BeatmasterD) is a well-known drummer in the Denver music scene who lends his talents to a variety of music projects. We want to hear from you! Interview with Handsome Ghost

We had the pleasure of interviewing Handsome Ghost over Zoom audio! Handsome Ghost is the Massachusetts duo of Eddie Byun and Tim Noyes. Their 2014 breakout single "Blood Stutter" racked up 20 million streams, and their debut album Welcome Back followed in 2018. Their second album, Some Still Morning, will be out on Photo Finish Records on September 18, 2020. When the noise of the world subsides and everything else goes quiet, emotions grow louder. With nothing to compete for attention and no distractions, the quietude enables honesty. Upheld by acoustic guitar, transmissions of ethereal production, and vocals that often barely register above a whisper, Handsome Ghost hover around this stillness on their 2020 second full-length album, Some Still Morning [Photo Finish Records]. The Massachusetts duo—Tim Noyes [singer, songwriter] and Eddie Byun [multi-instrumentalist, producer]—thread together eleven songs steeped in longing and nostalgia, loss and love, and darkness and light, all at once. "This record is about that moment at dawn right as the sun is coming up, when you're able to look at everything -- good or bad -- with a fresh perspective. It's that moment before all the stresses of the day really hit that you're able to look at things from a place of calm." says Tim. "To us, this record is about trying to harness that feeling." In 2014, Handsome Ghost initially captivated on the breakout single "Blood Stutter," which racked up over 20 million cumulative streams and introduced the 2015 Steps EP. It also began the story of one period of Noyes' life that drove much of his writing for Handsome Ghost. A year later, The Brilliant Glow EP yielded "Eyes Wide" [16.5 million Spotify streams] as the band tirelessly canvased the country on tour. Receiving acclaim courtesy of OnesToWatch, Culture Collide, Relix, and more, their prolific output continued on 2018's full-length debut, Welcome Back. Boasting the single "Fool," Atwood praised it as "a raw, intimate exploration of vulnerability and space—an emotional and ethereal journey." It addressed those old hurts head-on. Welcome Back was, for Noyes, his attempt to move past the story that began with "Blood Stutter." After unveiling the acoustic companion piece Welcome Back: The Acoustic Recordings and touring extensively, the pair turned their attention towards recording the follow-up in 2019. Having closed the chapter on a period of time that wove through Handsome Ghost's previous work, Noyes wrote the songs that would eventually become Some Still Morning with a fresh perspective and a new sense of clarity, one that interpreted the past and the present from a place of peace and, at times, acceptance. However when the duo set to record the songs, the process presented a series of unforeseen creative challenges. "It was a bit complicated," admits Tim. "The new album was a completely different experience from Welcome Back. After our last tour, we felt like we were trying to make a statement, which went awry at some point. We spent six months on six ideas and then scrapped all of it." "We didn't even know if we'd go on," sighs Eddie. "We were initially trying so hard to take the sound of the last record and shift it in different ways...and it didn't work. We got frustrated and it showed in the music." As the band considered drastic shifts including ending the project altogether, they finally broke through during one late night session, as the sun was coming up and the glowing light was peeking into their home studio. "We realized at that moment, that the world we created around these songs needed to be completely different from our previous sound." Says Eddie. "We needed to compartmentalize the past sonically, and move forward with a different vision." "We tried to keep everything intimate," affirms Tim. "We were really delicate and deliberate in what we wanted to include in terms of the arrangements. We cut away any excess. Each part serves its purpose. Interview with VIOLET NIGHT

We had the pleasure of interviewing Connor Pohl over Zoom audio! Alternative band Violet Night is thrilled to announce their forthcoming album A N T I H E R O E S, set to be released on September 25th, 2020. The album serves as a follow up to 2018's Colours Of You, and features the previously released "freak me up." To pre-save the album, please visit: Smarturl.it/ANTIHEROES. On the new album, vocalist/guitarist Connor Pohl shares: "With A N T I H E R O E S, we broke the band down into its smallest parts, and wiped the slate clean. We wrote this album with the mindset that it was our very first record, and there was no preconceived notion or expectation of what we were supposed to sound like." Violet Night don't just play their instruments; they use them as tools to carefully construct emotion. Hailing from Toronto, ON vocalist/guitarist Connor Pohl, keyboardist T.J. Rounthwaite, and drummer Tay Ewart aim to traverse soundscapes as diverse as their province's landscapes. From the soaring heights of mountains to the tranquil beauty of a forest, the sky's the limit with this alternative trio's sound and potential. Sophomore LP A N T I H E R O E S is ascending skyward on the wings of first single "freak me up," originally released August 2019 and a part of the rocking one-two centerpiece that also includes the darker angst of "(if) you are the ocean (then) i would like to drown". Surrounding those tracks are seven others that show the trio's ever-increasing mastery of hooks, from the late night love letter "evergreen" or introspection on why we're here "stay golden; we're all the same in the dark," to the driving rock anthems "wallflower (none of this means anything)" and "hate me." What else were they going to do, though, other than write? Initially formed as a duo, the band spent their formative years honing their craft in rural British Columbia. With distance standing in the way of shows, they doubled down on taking the band to new heights and relocated to Toronto, where they scouted drummer Tay Ewart (Like Pacific, Modern Space). A full U.S. tour and countless Canadian concerts have proven Violet Night's charisma belongs on the stage, as much as their creativity belongs in the studio. With the floodgates of possibility opened and waves already forming, be prepared to lose yourself in A N T I H E R O E S — and Violet Night. A N T I H E R O E S will be released on September 25th, 2020. To pre-save, please visit: Smarturl.it/ANTIHEROES. Interview with Annika Rose

We had the pleasure of interviewing Annika Rose over Zoom video! Rising artist and LA-based singer-songwriter Annika Rose has released her new single "Butterflies" via TaP Records. Annika teamed up with Erik Hassle (Rihanna, TV On The Radio) and Tim Randolph (Imagine Dragons, Whethan) to write and produce the new single. Inspired by a late-night conversation with a friend about the pressures of their futures and the transition from adolescence to adulthood, Annika shares, "I found myself reflecting deeply on childhood naivety and the freedom from the realities of the world and growing up, back to what often feels like a simpler time. Catching butterflies is a metaphor for that lost innocence and purity of life when we're young. Especially lately, the intensity of this feeling has grown with everything happening in the world and I want to use this song and my music to connect with others who may be feeling a similar way." Listen to "Butterflies" here: https://awal.ffm.to/butterflies In tandem with the new single, Annika has shared the official video for "Butterflies". The video finds Annika alone on a ranch and emulates the single's themes of a teen who has just reached adulthood and is saying goodbye to a simpler rainbow-filled life without responsibilities. Directed by Luke Biggins (Stefflon Don, Stormzy) with Creative Director Rebekah Bird (MNEK, MO), the UK-based duo co-directed the nostalgic and at times trippy visual virtually via Zoom. "Butterflies" is the latest single Annika has released this year and follows previous releases "Bittersweet" and "Naïve," which Billboard featured as one of "10 Cool New Pop Songs." Annika made her debut last fall with singles "In The End" and "Fly To You" from her first EP, Ventura Boulevard. Since making her debut, Annika has been featured as Apple Music's "New Artist of the Week" following the release of her first single, "In The End," and she has been featured in the Evening Standard's "20 Musicians Under 20 to Know for 2020" and Grimy Goods' "20 Los Angeles Bands/Artist To Watch in 2020." Born into a musical family—her mom's a songwriter, her dad plays guitar and piano — Annika first started honing her songcraft as a little kid growing up in Southern California. Raised on an eclectic mix of singer/songwriters and artists like Stevie Nicks and Alanis Morissette to Fiona Apple, The 1975, and Hayley Williams. At just 18-years-old, Annika embodies a clarity of vision that's rare even among the most established artists. Strong-willed, self-driven and bubbling with charisma yet disarmingly sensitive, the rising singer/songwriter has devoted most of her adolescence to music, spending countless nights alone at the piano and carefully unearthing her most authentic voice. She possesses a lyrical identity that boldly deviates from the usual pop milieu, revealing a seldom-spoken truth about the emotional chaos in coming of age. We want to hear from you! Interview with 99 Neighbors

Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing 99 Neighbors over Zoom video! Emerging hip-hop collective 99 Neighbors unveil their first music of 2020, delivering two new songs titled "QWOP" and "Basement" on Nice Work/Warner Records. The bundle arrives with a stellar animated video for "QWOP," created by Win Homer. 99 Neighbors, a sprawling collective of rappers, singers, songwriters, producers, instrumentalists and visual artists, have been tirelessly working on new music under one roof while maintaining their weekly livestream radio show on Twitch throughout quarantine called 99 Radio. Creatively, the group has taken their music to another level on "QWOP" and "Basement" with thumping production provided by in-house producer Somba and tightly constructed verses from rappers HANKNATIVE, Sam Paulino and Swank. The group is firing on all cylinders with the creative visual for "QWOP" portraying the members as cartoon characters on an escape mission from the TSA with weed in tow, making it nothing short of captivating. ABOUT 99 NEIGHBORS: If you went looking for the next revolutionary group in hip-hop, you probably wouldn't expect to find them in Burlington, Vermont. But 99 Neighbors love to upend expectations. So the fact that they come from a woodsy hometown, far away from any anywhere people expect rap groups to come from, is only the beginning. 99 Neighbors is a collaborative project founded by hip-hop vocalists Sam Paulino, HANKNATIVE, photographer Shane Kaseta and producer Somba. The collective is the result of friends combining their efforts to maximize their unique abilities and includes additional members Swank, Aidan Ostby, Jared Fier and Julian Segar-Reid (aka Juju), creating an awe-inspiring group of talent with unlimited creative expression and potential. A sprawling collective of rappers, singers, songwriters, producers, instrumentalists and visual artists, 99 Neighbors challenges our preconceived notions of what a band even is. And if their work so far is any indication of their sonic dexterity and versatility, you can bet that the next thing they release won't sound the same. The only thing you can ever bet on with 99 Neighbors' music is that you won't see it coming. We want to hear from you! Interview & Return of Billy Raffoul

We had the pleasure of catching up with Billy Raffoul over Zoom video! For those that have not watched our face-to-face interview with Billy at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego in 2019, you can view it at BringinitBackwards.com. Singer/songwriter Billy Raffoul released his debut full-length album International Hotel on August 28th on Interscope Records. International Hotel was recorded with two microphones in Raffoul's girlfriend's room in his hometown of Leamington, Ontario. The simplicity of that approach is perfectly suited to the rugged intimacy of Raffoul's songwriting, and to the Americana-leaning sensibilities he brought to the making of International Hotel. International Hotel is available now at all digital retailers. Earlier this month Raffoul shared the first track from International Hotel, the sparsely arranged "What Makes a Man." A profoundly moving protest song that speaks out against systemic racism "What Makes a Man" was the final song written and recorded for International Hotel marks the first time Raffoul ever recorded a song with harmonica. The song's homespun austerity also extends to its video, shot in warm black-and-white and quietly centered on Raffoul's impassioned performance. Mainly co-produced by Raffoul and his longtime collaborator Justin Zuccato, International Hotel takes its title from a bar in Leamington — the very spot his musician father frequents after finishing up his own gigs. After opening on the title track (a loving tribute to Raffoul's father and his lifelong devotion to rock-and-roll), the album offers up a dozen more songs rooted in his sharply observed storytelling. With those songs encompassing everything from treasured family history to clear-eyed social commentary to a heartrending ballad of a comic-book hero on "The Ballad of James Howlett," International Hotel closes out with "Massey Hall": an homage to the venue of Raffoul's dreams, a Toronto theater where Neil Young recorded Live at Massey Hall 1971. Track listing for International Hotel: 1. International Hotel 2. What Makes a Man 3. Philadelphia 4. Everything Marie 5. Sundown on County Line 6. Right Behind You 7. Library Book 8. The Ballad of James Howlett 9. Shannon 10. Big City 11. You & I 12. Truth Be Told (I Like You) 13. Massey Hall Growing up in the small farming town of Leamington, Ontario, Raffoul first discovered his gift for songwriting at age ten, thanks in no small part to the influence of his father — a musician who's opened for everyone from Joe Cocker to Bon Jovi. After landing his first paying gig (playing to long-haul drivers at a local truck stop), Raffoul began performing at nearby bars and clubs at age 16, often driving into Detroit for shows. He eventually connected with a manager and moved down to Nashville. Soon after scoring a deal with Interscope Records, Raffoul released the critically acclaimed song "Driver," which he then followed with his debut EP 1975 (a 2018 release featuring the fan favorite "Acoustic"). Arriving in spring 2019, his sophomore EP Running Wild found him joining forces with leading producers like Greg Kurstin, as well as collaborating with such boundary-breaking artists as singer/songwriter Julia Michaels. In April 2020, Raffoul returned with his third EP, A Few More Hours at YYZ. Over the past few years, he's opened for heavyweights like Kings of Leon, X Ambassadors, and NEEDTOBREATHE, captivating crowds with his understated yet intensely passionate stage presence. After postponing the West Coast run of his A Few More Hours At…2020 North American Tour, Raffoul found himself back in Leamington and immediately took to Instagram Live for intimate performances from his father's home. Since the launch of the Still Social Distancing Tour 2020, he's joined forces with special guest artists like Alec Chambers, Zac Barnett, Caitlyn Smyth, Wrabel, John Paul White, and more.
