Interview with CrowJane
We had the pleasure of interviewing CrowJane over Zoom video! Mater Dolorosa, "Our Lady Of Sorrows", the incarnation of Mary pierced through the heart with seven swords, is a fitting title and matron for the solo debut of CrowJane. LA Punk Legend Paul Roessler (Screamers, Nina Hagen, 45 Grave, Deadbeats), after becoming close friends with CrowJane while recording her band Egrets On Ergot, could see that she was in the grips of the kind of crushing woe that's so often the seed of hard-won transformation. Suspecting the rewards that awaited if she would risk shining a light on her own murk, Roessler took matters into his own hands, and all but locked her in his studio, Kitten Robot. Surrounding her with every available musical instrument, a pen and some paper, he compelled her to face the rawness of loss, abuse, and addiction. When the palette of existing tones were no longer a match for the depths they plumbed, they were forced to coax new sounds out of impromptu homemade instruments - metal bed frames, kitty litter, crumpling foil, containers of water and whatever else was around. Together they hacked through tangles of psychic resistance and dredged toxic marshes for sunken personal horrors. One by one, using fresh alchemy invented on the cuff, they opened old wounds and from them extracted Mater Dolorosa's 10 eerie pearls. The path they carved together led through a twisted maze, the obstacles so frequently daunting that the project took years. During that time CrowJane helped bring Egrets on Ergot local acclaim, became "Sally" and "Nurse Heather" in the twisted cabaret of The Deadbeats and, most recently, the unhinged front woman of quizzical LA sonic terrorists, Prissy Whip, whose Swallow LP Roessler also recorded and mixed. Using music and a deepening connection to life's unseen component CrowJane has spent the last several years building and rebuilding better versions of herself from the ash of shed skins. The 10 songs on Mater Dolorosa almost perfectly mirror and chronicle this long ascent towards wholeness. Coming from a visual art background of surrealism and horror, she has simultaneously built a career as a professional horror effects makeup artist. This unlikely background helped foster an outsider musical sensibility that is perfectly balanced by an encyclopedic knowledge of the byways and back roads of punk and death rock, both historic and in LA's contemporary underground music scene, of which her bands have been an integral component for the past 10 years. As a part of these utterly distinct and uncompromising bands she has developed a reputation for shattering expectations, both in her choice of collaborators and her contributions to the collaboration. Although this pedigree informs the haunting tracks on this solo debut, those familiar with her explosive and provocative live performances will likely be blindsided by the soft vulnerability and nakedness of Mater Dolorosa, the arrangements of which allow her no place to hide and nothing left to do but forgive the past. Interview with Knuckle Puck
We had the pleasure of interviewing Knuckle Puck over Zoom video! NEW ALBUM 20/20 ARRIVES SEPTEMBER 18 VIA RISE RECORDS Chicago's Knuckle Puck — vocalist Joe Taylor, guitarist/vocalist Nick Casasanto, guitarist Kevin Maida, drummer John Siorek, and bassist Ryan Rumchaks — will release their third full-length album 20/20 on September 18 through Rise Records. The album is available for pre-order: http://smarturl.it/KP-2020 About Knuckle Puck: Despite its title, the second album from Knuckle Puck isn't a reinvention; rather, Shapeshifter is the sound of the Chicago-based pop-punk band taking their best qualities and honing them to make them even sharper. The songwriting became tighter and more deliberate, the lyrics more introspective and urgent—without losing an ounce of the sweat-soaked authenticity and passion that made their debut album, Copacetic, so captivating. Above all, it's an album that proves the band are unflinchingly unwilling to compromise when it comes to their art. That's evident on first single "Gone," perhaps the most fully realized Knuckle Puck song to date. It's equal parts muscular and melodic, textured with keyboards, buzzsaw guitars and a buoyant chorus that will integrate seamlessly into the band's raved-about live show. "When you reach early adulthood and start to see your life take shape, it's also important to shape your identity and break yourself free from anything that might be holding you down," guitarist Nick Casasanto explains. "I hope the album instills a little bit of hope in people. I hope people realize they should consume the things that really speak to them. Through that, I feel like it's the most satisfying way to be who you want to be." We want to hear from you! Interview with The Trouble Notes
We had the pleasure of interviewing The Trouble Notes over Zoom video! The Berlin based quartet is composed of violinist Bennet Cerven, guitarist Florian Eisenschmidt, percussionist Oliver Maguire and bassist Stefan Bielik. Hailing from different countries, each member of the group brings a different musical training and perspective to the band. Bennet, a classical trained violinist born in Chicago, began his violin playing at 4 years old. While he was performing in orchestras and winning prizes in soloist competitions, his love for hip-hop and alternative genres helped shape his mind as a composer. An avid history lover and academic, Bennet first conceived the original compositions out of a desire to travel and a lust for adventure to far away lands. Oliver was born into a family of rock and roll. His father was the tour manager of Motorhead for many years and the late Phil Taylor began teaching Olly the drums from a young age. He grew up in a vary diverse area of west London, and was surrounded by friends who exposed him to the rhythmic styles of ethnic musicians from all over the world. Florian began learning the guitar in his early teenage years in Braunschweig, Germany. A love for classic rock and the contemporary indie bands of his youth urged him to express himself with his instrument. He has since been influenced by some of the best rhythmic guitarists the likes of Rodrigo y Gabriela, John Butler and Tommy Emanuel. Stefan first found himself with a bass in his hands at the age of 15 through the desire to form a band with his friends. Soon after, he began studying jazz bass at the Joseph Haydn conservatory in Eisenstadt, Austria. While jazz formed his skillset, it was his love for funk and rock that gave him his musical direction. For 2 years he was the primary bassist of Berlin-based Australian Rock band The Sunpilots and dedicated himself to a life of music. It is during their mutual time in Berlin that he met The Trouble Notes and his infectious energy and love for music made him a natural fit with the band. Their music is characterised by emotionally driven, instrumental ballads reflecting pan-cultural influences and blending an eclectic fusion of traditions, to create a truly unique sound; representative of their extensive travels and consequent musical development. The group has achieved success and wide acclaim for past releases, with their previous EP Soundtracks from the Street reaching the Top 5 in USA iTunes charts for Latin & World Music. Videos of their performances have been viewed more than 100 million times on social media. They have scored multiple films including Als Paul über das Meer kam and Carracci: La Rivoluzione Silenziosa. They have performed live on Television in the United States and Canada, and radio formats in Germany, France and the United Kingdom. In 2019 they toured with Rodrigo y Gabriela, opening for them as a part of their European Mettavolution tour. Everyone that joins the universe of The Trouble Notes remains a part of it, and often morph from a normal concertgoer into a true Troublemaker-sharing in the journey of the group. They pride themselves on their ability to use modern solutions to maintain a very real and humanistic way of life. Using a blend of digital platforms, they have built a world-wide audience by allowing intimate access into their lives and keeping a personal relationship with many of their fans. Their audience ultimately plays a role in the very creation of music by serving as cultural influencers and story-givers for their worldly compositions. The Trouble Notes live a never-ending adventure traveling and telling the stories of people and places through their music. We want to hear from you! Interview with Grayscale
We had the pleasure of interviewing Grayscale over Zoom audio! Philadelphia's GRAYSCALE released the Live From The Barber Shop Studios EP on July 29 via Fearless Records. The EP features three reimagined versions of songs from the band's sophomore album Nella Vita, which arrived last September. The "Reworked" versions are enhanced and embellished with additional musicians and instruments, fully demonstrating the depth and breadth of the band's songwriting skills. Dallas Molster offered further insight into the EP, saying, "It started with our good friend, Skyler Patzer, who had written the piano arrangement previously on our Punk Goes Acoustic 'Atlantic' track. I had written the acoustic, bass, and drum loop parts for a reworked version of 'Painkiller Weather,' and then sent it off to Skyler, who then wrote a beautiful piano part to accompany what I had written. The chemistry and workflow that I had developed with Skyler was so enjoyable that I wanted to work on another song with him." He finishes, "What made this such a cool project for me, personally, was that this was the first time that I had gotten to produce a collection of songs for the band from start to finish. This was a unique opportunity for me to play both the roles of producer and musician simultaneously. We performed these songs at the Barbershop Studios with the help of our friend Brett Romnes. Brett was the mixing engineer on this project and was my right-hand man in setting up and rearranging the studio for each of these three very different songs. This was special for all of us because it was the first time that we had played our songs with other musicians outside of the band. The additional musicians and creatives allowed each song to take on a completely new life, and we couldn't be more excited to share them with the world." We want to hear from you! By the age of 5, Lanning already had an impressive collection of cassette tapes, creating a passion for music at a young age. At the age of six, Lanning and his family moved to Idaho, near his grandmother, who played an active role in supporting his talents and enrolled him in the Idaho Children's Opera. While in school, he was hand-selected to join the school choir (despite being too young), exposing the young artist to a wide range of musical genres and further igniting his love for the art. This resulted in his love for the art being further ignited. During that time, his family moved to the mountains, where they experienced a country life that was vastly different from what he was used to. They lived off the land, ate what they hunted, and chopped and gathered wood to stay warm. It was that point in which Lanning became a fan of country music. He'd listen while working in the yard, and in the truck on the way to fishing, archery, and hunting competitions. In August 2008, he married his high school sweetheart, Missy. Shortly after, the couple sold all of their belongings and moved back to California in hopes to find more job opportunities and to start a family. Facing nothing but tragedy while trying to conceive, the couple created a YouTube Channel called Daily Bumps, where they candidly shared their story to help others going through similar struggles. With 5 million subscribers, the popular channel continues to draw new fans who are interested in keeping up with Lanning's life, family, and now, music. Now a father to two beautiful little boys, Bryan is also the CEO and founder to the professional music studio, Cali Co. Interview with Manny Blu
We had the pleasure of interviewing Manny Blu over Zoom audio! Country recording artist, Manny Blu will release a new EP, titled New Ink, on November 13, 2020. Manny's debut single off the record, "Born To Ride," is now available and perfectly lays the groundwork for what is to come. Bringing to life a completely different side of the Montreal native, New Ink speaks directly to what Manny himself calls the "true heart" of the band's live shows: "There's more rock, more soul, and more volume this time around. It's bigger and louder, but it's still me. And more importantly, it's still fun." With his amplified mix of country twang and heavy rock & roll attitude, Manny brings his rebellious outlaw vibe to country music, creating an original sound that makes room for his blues and rock upbringing. While influenced by Brantley Gilbert, The Cadillac Three, and Jason Aldean, each of the five tracks heard on New Ink live in an edgy new space with rock-based instrumentals at the forefront. Recorded at OmniSound Studios in Nashville and produced by Aaron Eshuis, its rock-forward approach is fitting since the title stems from one of Manny's favorite bands, Mötley Crüe, and their album New Tattoo. One look at Manny, and it's no secret that he's a fan of tattoos-but to him New Ink means more than just thinking about the next one, for him, it's the release of his inner creative expression and his new sound to the world. The first single off of New Ink, "Born To Ride," is a track about finding that 'ride or die' person who will have your back as much as you have theirs—written by top songwriters Rhett Akins, Ross Copperman, and Josh Osborne, the track debuts today with a lyric video that provides a snapshot of Manny's acclaimed live shows. Consisting of four additional tracks telling the stories of real-life through love and heartbreak, Manny's upcoming EP displays substantial growth. Not only has 2020 already been a landmark year when it comes to streaming for the up-and-coming artist, it has also led to the development of global expansion with the addition of teams in the US, Canada, and the UK. "Music is one of the most powerful elements to someone's life," said Manny when talking of the story behind the EP. "I think it can make what someone is going through ok, it can motivate, and empower people–so I tried to add a little piece of each of those things into New Ink." Manny continues to bring his vibe to country music–a sound he introduced with Leave It Like It Is, his debut record (2019) that earned him thousands of new fans and presented him with the opportunity to hit the road across Canada and the US. Last spring, Manny spent two months crossing Canada while opening for George Canyon's "Hit After Hit Tour" and then headlined his Canadian tour to close out the year. Earlier this spring, Manny crossed the US and Canada on another headlining tour. Fans can expect new show announcements in the coming months. ABOUT MANNY BLU: Manny Blu has always been a fighter. Years before he crisscrossed North America as an acclaimed country singer and a true road warrior-playing nightly shows in support of his 2019 debut album Leave It Like It Is, while also sharpening the larger-than-life sound that would fill his 2020 follow-up EP New Ink, Manny spent his days in the gym, training for a career as an MMA fighter. Traveling often to Nashville from his hometown of Montreal, he began piecing together a new record–one that showcased the lessons he learned on the road. Working with producer Aaron Eshuis and hit songwriters like Josh Osborne, Rhett Atkins, and Ross Copperman, Manny Blu emerged from Nashville's OmniSound Studios with New Ink. From "Born To Ride" to "Sink," these new songs tell relatable stories about love, loss, breakups, and everything in between, rooted in an amplified mix of country twang and heavy rock & roll attitude. "I wanted the album to sound the way we do live," says Manny.
