Interview with Native Harrow
We had the pleasure of interviewing Native Harrow over Zoom video! Native Harrow are the Pennsylvania-based duo of Devin Tuel and Stephen Harms whose music pairs the warm, analog-obsessed sonics of classic folk-rock with trenchant modern observations on climate change, social responsibility, mental health, and so much more. Their new album 'Closeness' has already been deemed "exquisite" (Uncut), "exceptional" (WXPN), "serene" (MOJO), and "lofty and layered" (American Songwriter), while The Line Of Best Fit says it's "authentic" and "refuses to stagnate." "I dug myself out from the well to make Closeness, a record about love", professes Devin Tuel, from the Eastern Pennsylvania home she shares with her partner, Stephen Harms. Together the two make up the folk rock outfit, Native Harrow. "When I sat down to begin what would become Closeness I felt that above all, I wanted to make it clear that, while the clock is moving, we can hold onto one another and maybe there will be tears but there will also be laughter." Closeness, the fourth LP from Native Harrow, exists at the intersection of two winding roads; time and motion. The album opens like the shot of a cannon with "Shake", a rocking confessional about riding anxiety's elevator. If this is any indication of where the band have been since last we heard from them (2019's, Happier Now), time has moved on and with it life has evolved and unfolded. Time moves away, takes what it can carry ... I have seen how it ends, thru the edges of time ... Time turns away so quickly, quiet as it goes ... It's the same every time ... Time's gonna get harder but you've gotta carry on ... Watch the weeks go by, my how the years have gone by ... I can't quiet my head of the sounds of time rolling by ... From the winding years, there is a season for all to unfold ... Time moves forward, and I gave up that chase. Today, the band are reflecting on not only this new record but how now, months after its recording wrapped, it feels ever prescient. Tuel takes us back to when she was writing the album and the early days of Closeness' conception, "For this record I really wanted to tell stories. Our stories from the last two years, from the weeks leading up to recording, tales from other lifetimes, and stories from where I fear this world is heading." When it came time to record the songs, the band decamped to Reliable Recorders in Chicago, IL to once again work with drummer and engineer, Alex Hall. The 10 tracks of Closeness were recorded over two sessions; three December days in the dying light of 2019 and the first three new days of January 2020. Similar to the process of making Happier Now, the sessions were firstly focused on documenting trio performances that captured Tuel's master vocal takes live in the room, guitar in hand, with Harms on bass and Hall on drums. Closeness elaborates on the group's radiant warmth and timeless nostalgia with the inclusion of new sounds and experiences. The combustible fuzz-driven opener "Shake" gives way to slices of 70s FM groove ("The Dying of Ages" and the desert funk of "If I Could"), 60s art pop ("Even Peace" and the expansive orchestral "Sun Queen"), and the kind of graceful folk ("Smoke Burns") and folk soul (the compassionate conviction of "Carry On") the band is best known for. The intricate polyrhythms and grinding Moog synthesizer ("Same Every Time"), the fully realized vintage jazz combo ("Turn Turn"), and the exquisite piano ballad (the penultimate "Feeling Blue") provide glimpses down previously unexplored streets and find the band stretching out and confidently illuminating their expansive aspirations. Closeness was be released on 18th September 2020 via Loose, available on LP, CD & digital. The Dirty Nil is an alternative rock band of three including Luke Bentham for the vocals and lead guitar, Ross Miller for the bass guitar, and Kyle Fisher for the drums. This Canadian native band won in 2017 garnering the Juno Award for Breakthrough Group of the year. It was during high school when the band was formed and naming it The Dirty Nil. Interview with The Brummies
We had the pleasure of interviewing The Brummies over Zoom! The Brummies is an independent band of three embodied by the vocalists and instrumentalists, John Davidson and Jacob Bryant, and Trevor Davis playing drums. The band was formed when they were in high school inspired by several iconic artists such as My Morning Jacket, Elton John, ELO, The Beatles, and Blitzen Trapper. These influences inspired their psych-rock vibe incorporated with the soft-indie folk genre. Their success was rooted when Jacob and John poured their heart into writing music. They collaborated with different artists such as Band Perry with their song Done. The song was number one on Billboard's Country Airplay Chart back in the year 2013. Before forming The Brummies, they were a performing duo called John & Jacob. In 2014, they even released an independent album in which one of the singles called Be My Girl was on a television series, Nashville. One of their biggest milestones as a performing duo was when they were given an opportunity to open for Kacey Musgraves' tour, Trailer Different Park tour in 2014. They initially collaborated with Trevor Davis. After wrapping up the tour in 2015, Davis officially became part of the group and introduced themselves as The Brummies. https://open.spotify.com/artist/1B9SbgFtfWSlUvAd1y0AaA https://www.thebrummies.com/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCZkmxICoApAzCIrazLxhIGw https://www.instagram.com/thebrummies/?hl=en We want to hear from you! Interview with Drew Citron
We had the pleasure of interviewing Drew Citron over Zoom video! Brooklyn indie-rock stalwart Drew Citron formed Beverly in 2013, after having got her start as a touring member with Frankie Rose and The Pains of Being Pure of Heart. Over the course of Beverly's two LPs, released on Kanine Records, Citron toured the world with big acts (The Drums, We Are Scientists). She and Beverly drummer, Scott Rosenthal (Class Actress, The Beets), would go on to open storied Bushwick music-venue, Alphaville, and more recently embark on the highly regarded post-punk outfit, Public Practice. In all these collaborative endeavors, Citron has been developing, refining, and ultimately giving life to what is her latest project, Free Now, due out Summer of 2020 on Park The Van. "Growing up in San Francisco, I used to take so many long melancholic walks listening to The Smiths on my Discman. And those walks now strike me as a kind of prelude to the feeling I'm getting at with this album," says Citron. "Most of the songs were written in Northern California, camped out on the coast recalling much of how it felt to be an adolescent of sixteen, in love with a record." Citron, after the break up of Beverly and the end of her long-term relationship with Rosenthal, writes a lot about heartbreak on Free Now. But at thirty-four, she's also arrived at the height of her performing/writing/producing abilities. "I am finally unafraid to get up on stage and be the front-person, to write all my own material, to get behind a mixing board and turn the knobs and produce my own songs," she says. "And it took time to get here. It takes time." In the recording, Citron recruited an extremely talented pool of musicians, recording with Sam Owens (aka Sam Evian) at Flying Cloud, Tim Wheeler (of Ash) at Atomic Heart, John Agnello (engineer: Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, Kurt Vile) at Water Music, and Danny Taylor at Transmitter Park Studio. The song arrangements were worked out on stage night after night with Citron's backing band, comprised of Nico Hedley and Laura Catalano, so that when Citron went into the studio, the songs were, as they say, ready to go. With Free Now, Citron, one of the most beautiful voices in Indie Rock, comes to the table with a whole lot of pain to sing about and the full musical knowledge to put herself, and her talents, front, and center. Interview with Carlie Hanson (Part 2)
We had the pleasure of interviewing Carlie Hanson over Zoom! Carlie Hanson is an established artist in the music industry for her talent and passion for singing and songwriting. It was the year 2018 when she released her debut single, Only One, that gained a lot of attention increasing her fan base. It is the song that was featured on a playlist by Taylor Swift herself. With her career being in heat, the year after, she released her debut extended play entitled Junk, and in 2020, another extended play was released with the title DestroyDestroyDestroyDestroy. Being a singer-songwriter was once just a dream. Carlie Hanson was working at a fast-food chain in 2016. The opportunity presented itself when she became part of a contest at iHeart Radio to see Zayn Malik perform at a concert. As it was a contest, she sang Pillowtalk by Zayn Malik while she was seated in a parked car within the vicinity of a shopping mall. She uploaded the video online on different social media platforms and immediately caught the attention of iHeart Radio. With the attention drawn to her, a talent agent reached out to her and invited her to audition in Toronto performing in front of the producers of House of Wolf. Her introductory experience was working with Dale Anthoni, who's also a songwriter, and eventually allowed her to develop her skills in writing music. https://www.instagram.com/carliehanson/?hl=en https://www.carliehanson.co/ https://www.facebook.com/carliehansonmusic/ https://open.spotify.com/artist/3mPc8WGusz2XF3Tvs3AKCR We want to hear from you! Interview with The Bouncing Souls (Part 2)
We had the pleasure of interviewing The Bouncing Souls over Zoom! An iconic American punk band whose roots lie in New Brunswick in New Jersey. They are a band of four composed of Greg Attonito, Pete Steinkopf, Bryan Kienlen, and George Rebelo. The year 1989 was when The Bouncing Souls formed. They were recognized in the punk-rock scene in the music industry with their heart driven in writing, playing, and recording songs that are light-hearted. Their love for music started in the midst of their high school years. In college, the idea eventually faded but over the years, they decided to recreate the idea. As they engage in the music scene, they play in clubs around their hometown. This opportunity flourished as their fan base continued to grow. Not only did it build its reputation as a local band, but it also helped the other starting bands gain an audience by opening up for their gigs. The name of the band was well thought originated from the slogan of Doc Martens' shoes which is "with bouncing souls". The first album that they released is The Good, The Bad, and The Argyle that was released in the year of 1994 under Chunksaah Records, their own founded record label. This debut album is composed of their different released EPs compiled all together. Two of the most listened to tracks on the album are titled Candy and What Boys Like. In preparation for something bigger, in 1996, they released their second album titled Maniacal Laughter. This became a door of opportunities for The Bouncing Souls to go on tour in collaboration with the Youth Brigade. https://www.facebook.com/bouncingsouls/ https://www.bouncingsouls.com/ https://open.spotify.com/artist/3mvTAjG7rcyk7DQzLwauzV https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKD_-0EgLEybUmD8ThnVK5Q We want to hear from you! Interview with Royal Bliss
We had the pleasure of interviewing Royal Bliss over Zoom! The name alone would define how this iconic American rock band is going strong for more than two decades now. Royal Bliss originated in Salt Lake City in Utah in the year of 1997. As of today, they have released ten full studio albums signed with their label, Capitol Records. Since they were once a local band in Utah, they play in different venues across the state selling out most of their tickets. From being just a native band, they have done gigs in different neighboring states too such as Wyoming, Washington, California, Idaho, Iowa, Nevada, Texas, and Oregon. It was in 2002 when Royal Bliss made a breakthrough gig at the Key Club located in Hollywood playing a sold-out performance. Their success is a collaborative effort of the group composed of Neal Middleton, Taylor Richards, Jake Smith, Dwayne Crawford, and Sean Hennesy. Years later, they signed with the Capitol Music Group led by its CEO, Jason Flom. The year 2007 was their peak wherein they signed with the record label and at the same time, in the process of recording a new CD in Oregon produced and wrapped by Rob Daiker and was engineered by Matt Winegar. Their genre is the hype of the early 2000s which is post-grunge, country rock, hard rock, and southern rock. This band of five proves that their success did not just depend on the use of different internet platforms. They remain traditional and classic. https://www.facebook.com/royalbliss/ http://www.royalbliss.com/ We want to hear from you! Interview with Ziggy Alberts
We had the pleasure of interviewing Ziggy Alberts over Zoom! An independent artist who flourished in the year 2018 for releasing his studio album Laps Around the Sun. Ziggy Alberts was once an aspiring singer-songwriter who turned these dreams into reality. He originated in the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. Growing up, he was just around his own company since he was homeschooled. In terms of education, he didn't see himself to be engaged in music but rather in the field of dentistry and engineering which doesn't require a sense of creativity at all. It was in the midst of high school when he found his heart in writing songs. Imagine how much he had achieved within the 25 years of his existence. He founded the record label Commonfolk Records and released five records since the first day he first pursued music. His success was defined by his sold-out tours not just done locally but internationally. Considering his growing fan base, there's no doubt how much he has gained listeners from once a local artist to now an international icon. His soulful music is based on his lyrics that are pretty vivid, straightforward, and personal exploring his experiences and perspectives. You can feel his profound love for the environment too as he advocates for environmental preservation. It is in his blood to flash an image of what his audience needs to hear. https://open.spotify.com/artist/6tuPdaFPIytg3l2f51L7Hw Ziggyalberts.com https://twitter.com/ZiggyJanAlberts https://www.facebook.com/ziggyalbertspage/ https://www.instagram.com/ziggyalberts/?hl=en We want to hear from you!
