Interview with Karin Ann

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Karin Ann over Zoom video! Slovakia Pop artist Karin Ann released the audio and video for her new single "i yearn for agony" last week with Wonderland Magazine and 1883 Magazine respectively. This single mixed and mastered by British producer Matt Schwartz (Yungblud, Massive Attack) follows a slue of successful single releases from Karin in 2020 as she builds up to the release of her currently untitled debut EP. Above all, Karin Ann hopes to bring a message with both her platform and her music. Her songs infuse real subjects from mental health to societal standards, as her fans turn to her for both good music and insight. This mixture of good pop music with a deep meaning is just what Karin delivered with new single "i yearn for agony" as Karin touches on serious subject matters while still creating a fun catchy pop track. With this serious subject matter of "i yearn for agony" Karin chose to release a stripped back acoustic version of the single with God Is In The TV Zine to allow listeners the opportunity to focus on the importance of her lyrics. When asked about "i yearn for agony" Karin said, "the song is about some of the darkest parts of my mind during some of my darkest times and because I feel like a lot of people blame themselves for having mental health issues - even though it isn't their fault - so I thought maybe this song could help anyone going through something similar or maybe help people that never went through anything like this to understand what's it like. I was in a bad mental state for a long time in my life - now luckily I'm a lot better - but back then most days I didn't have motivation to do anything, I didn't feel motivated to talk to anyone so I ended up pushing a lot of my close friends away, I really just wasn't doing well and now I know that none of it was my fault but back then I blamed me for everything and always asked myself why I can't be the way people want me to be and why I just can't be happy and a thought came to my head saying 'maybe I want this, maybe I yearn for agony." In speaking about the video Karin said, "For me it's a very visual song so when I was writing down the script for the music video it came to me immediately - especially the bridge of the song where the lyrics are literally in visual form. I've always been into scary stories and true crime cases and horror movies so I tried to make the visuals movie like and uncomfortable, also I always liked Tim Burton movies which influenced the video." Born in the town of Čadca, Karin Ann was drawn to fine arts and sports from a young age. It started with figure skating and gymnastics, then moved onto dance—from modern to ballet—and eventually included horseback riding. However, music was always present, as she loved groups like Queen, along with musicals and TV soundtracks. One day Karin put her pen to the paper as her first step toward making her own music. The first full song she wrote was when she was 14 years old. Though music was always a constant, it was still just a hobby for Karin. That is until at the age 15, Karin met a UK-based producer online, which eventually led to her and her father flying to England to work on music. Following this Karin released her first two songs, adding another a year later with a music video, which caught the eyes of internationally renowned producer Tomi Popovič. "That was such a big deal for me," she expresses. "Tomi is so well known and well-respected." The two spent eight months writing songs together, before even recording. "I had a direction of where I wanted to go, and he helped me get there," she explains. The result is Karin's upcoming debut EP set for release on BrainZone's label. We want to hear from you! Interview with Noga Erez

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Noga Erez over Zoom video! Tel-Aviv based artist Noga Erez shares an alternative version of "You So Done," the third single from her forthcoming second album (details to follow). The stripped-back reimagined live version continues the "Kids Against The Machine" series, following a similarly styled reworking of previous singles "VIEWS," and "NO news on TV." "The idea was not to use any 'machines,'" Noga explains. "No computer, no electronic instruments." "You So Done" was highly anticipated since appearing on NBC's Good Girls earlier this year and AV Club says the track's "calm delivery is bolstered by warped, imposing electronics that culminate into something taunting and intense." The song sees Erez shift from outward-looking political themes to personal soul-searching, opening up for a stirring track about rejection, toxic and emotionally violent relationships, and one's own inner violence. Along with the track, Noga shared a moving statement: "At some point, exactly one year ago, I started flashing back to one of the darkest times in my life. I was young, incredibly confused, and lonely... There was a moment during this period where I was actually so weak, insecure, and in need of love that I was not able to step out of what I know now to be an emotionally abusive relationship." Read the full statement HERE. The video for the "You So Done," which marks Noga's third collaboration with Tel Aviv-based director Indy Hait sees Noga as a puppet in a dystopian future, being violently flung to-and-fro by an unknown captor. Recently, Noga partnered with YouTube for a special live performance and fan Q+A about her recent singles and forthcoming album. ABOUT NOGA EREZ: Noga Erez burst onto the scene with 'Off The Radar' in 2017, winning acclaim across the globe. While the music she makes in collaboration with her partner and co-writer, composer and producer Ori Rousso, exploits many of the more physical, dynamic elements of electronic & pop music, it also embraces a cerebral sensitivity that's made her one of her home city's most exciting, idiosyncratic artists. The grainy textures and potent atmospheres forged with her synths and ingenious beats bravely straddle genres. Her 2018 standalone singles "Bad Habits" and "Cash Out (feat. SAMMUS)," and 2019 collaboration with ECHO, "Chin Chin" saw her continuing to forge a path of uncompromising and unpredictable, gritty, truth-seeking alt-pop. More to follow from Noga's anticipated upcoming second LP. We want to hear from you! Interview with KILLBOY

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing KILLBOY over Zoom video! KILLBOY can't get this bitch up out her head in her latest single "U + ME." The track drops alongside an intergalactic house party visual directed by STRIPMALL and produced by Dreambear (Steve Aoki, Trippie Redd, Lil Skies). The video, starring Jaden Fenix Forte, is available to stream now via YouTube HERE. "U + ME," written and produced by KILLBOY, is available to stream at all DSPs and streaming services HERE. ABOUT KILLBOY KILLBOY doesn't fit in—and she's not trying to. She speaks her mind and doesn't care about what anyones thinks, but she does care about her music (she writes, records, produces and engineers herself). She took a long road to become KILLBOY. Raised in Texarkana, TX, she always messed around with cassette recorders and sang to herself which instigated self-taught lessons in producing and playing every instrument. In high school, she managed to tour, record, and get on the radio under her legal name. She wound up in Nashville, "started partying, fucked off, and decided to go to college." Heading to Los Angeles after dropping out of college, she planted roots in Koreatown, working in karaoke bars to pay the rent by night and writing and producing music by day. In 2020, she broke through with her debut release "WHEREDAFUCC." It kicked open the door for a steady stream of singles like "JUST ME" and "666." Posting up millions of streams independently, she continues to provoke, prod, and push pop forward on a series of singles in 2021 sparked by "U + ME." We want to hear from you! Interview with Jillian Shea Spaeder

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Jillian Shea Spaeder over Zoom video! Jillian Shea Spaeder is an actress and singer-songwriter. The young starlet has a leading role alongside Jillian Bell and Isla Fisher in the Disney+ original film "Godmothered" which was released on December 4th, 2020. She also has two singles included within the film's soundtrack: "Rise Up (Joy to the World)" and "Hero". Jillian is best known for her series regular role as 'Bailey' on the Disney XD series "Walk the Prank". She also recently appeared as a guest star on Netflix's "No Good Nick" (with Sean Astin and Melissa Joan Hart), on Disney Channel's "Just Roll with It," and in a supporting role in the film "To the Beat!: Back 2 School." In addition to her acting career, the 18-year old is also a talented singer-songwriter. Jillian got her start singing and playing the piano when she was five years old, discovered her love of guitar/ukulele at 12, and is currently writing and recording her original music. Her first two singles, "Story" (July 2018) and "Barely Changed" (Jan 2019) were produced by music director and producer Mike Avenaim and mastered at Capitol Records. Jillian then released "Talk Too Loud" (June 2019) and "Something Better" (Sept 2019) while working with acclaimed producer Mikal Blue (Colbie Caillat, Jason Mraz, Five for Fighting, One Republic). Tapping into her film expertise, Jillian co-wrote, directed, and produced her music video for "Something Better" (Sept 2019). Following this record, Jillian released "Runaway" (Nov 2019) which she co-composed as the theme song for the Brat TV show Crazy Fast. She has since written and released several songs in the past few months, including "3:43 am" (produced by Blue), "i don't know," (produced by Bill Spaeder) and "Worth My Time" (produced by Avenaim). Jillian has several more songs in the works for release in the next few months and continues to write when she is not in the recording booth. As a Philadelphia-area native who primarily resides in Los Angeles, Jillian started her acting career with several roles in regional musical theater. It was a trip to Hollywood that changed Jillian's life through a chance encounter with her manager, who encouraged her to consider moving to California to enter the film and television industry. In her first three months in Hollywood, she appeared in the digital DreamWorksTV series "OMG!," had a guest starring role on Nickelodeon's "Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn," and booked a series regular role on Disney XD's "Walk the Prank." This year and beyond, Jillian's career will continue to blossom with her leading role in the Disney+ film "Godmothered" and with more original music on the way. Aside from music and acting, Jillian enjoys being able to utilize her voice for change in the world. She has dedicated her time to both the National Multiple Sclerosis Society a cause she became active in after her Aunt received an MS diagnosis, and Children International through which her family sponsors kids in need. Interview with Passenger

Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Passenger over Zoom video! Mike Rosenberg, better known as Passenger, is a multi-award winning, platinum-selling singer-songwriter from Brighton, England. Although still known for his busking, he long ago made the journey from street corners to stadiums – most notably with "Let Her Go," which reached number 1 in 19 countries and has now notched up close to three billion plays on YouTube. Yet "Let Her Go" is just one song from a remarkable back catalogue that extends across multiple albums – including Young as the Morning, Old as the Sea, which topped the charts in the UK and elsewhere. The consistency of his output, coupled with his authenticity both on and off stage, has won Rosenberg a global fanbase and given him the chance to headline some of the world's most famous stages. Rosenberg's latest album, Songs for the Drunk and Broken Hearted, is his thirteenth to date. He thought it was ready to go in early 2020, but then the Covid-19 pandemic turned the world upside down. The scheduled release date in May came and went. Eventually he decided that the album wasn't quite finished after all. Three songs no longer seemed to fit. They came off. More importantly, three new songs were added, including album opener "Sword from the Stone." The majority of the album had been written when Rosenberg was newly single. "Coming out of a break-up creates such a fragile window," he reflects. "You're incredibly vulnerable for a few months. You're so used to the safety of being with somebody and suddenly you're out in the world on your own. And you get pissed and probably make some bad decisions. In some ways, you make it worse for yourself. But it's a heady moment, losing love and being drunk. And it's universal. Everyone goes through it at some stage." The album is populated by drunk and broken-hearted characters. "'Remember to Forget' is about this guy who is always in the pub on his own," says Rosenberg. "Everybody knows this guy. He tries to befriend everyone, and he pisses everybody off. But really all he's trying to do is have a good time. The title track is set in a bar too. And 'Suzanne' is the story of a woman who was seduced by nightlife as a beautiful young girl. It's about her looking back on that as an older woman. So, the album is about heartbreak across the board." The big addition is the lead track, "Sword from the Stone," one of the songs Rosenberg wrote during lockdown. An acoustic version has already been released, but this new version realizes more of the song's epic potential. "I'm so excited about this one," says Rosenberg. "I wrote loads during lockdown, but I think this is the pick of the bunch. It's that cliché that you make your most poignant work when you're having a bit of a hard time. I have played it to friends and family, to people in the industry, to other musicians, and it seems to resonate across the board. I genuinely think it's had the best reaction of any song I've ever written." While plans to tour Songs for the Drunk and Broken Hearted have been repeatedly disrupted by the pandemic, then, the album itself has only benefitted from the enforced pause. "I usually make records very quickly," says Rosenberg. "I write songs and rush to record them. I always give myself too little time. This time, because we couldn't make videos or go busking or anything, we took the decision not to release the album when originally planned. And I think the record has improved substantially as a result." Due to a partnership with Ecologi and the Eden Reforestation Project, a tree will be planted for every physical copy of Songs for the Drunk and Broken Hearted sold via the Passenger store. All physical packaging is made from 100% recycled material. We want to hear from you! Interview with Maddie Logan

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Maddie Logan over Zoom video! Maddie Logan has been performing in one genre or another most of her 21 years. A lifelong love for writing both stories and poetry manifested itself into songwriting at a very young age. At the urging of her early music mentors, 9 year old Maddie entered a Los Angeles recording studio to lay down her first originals. She was hooked! Shortly thereafter, the gift of a guitar, gave her the instrument needed to connect her melodies and her lyrics. At 13, Maddie's penchant for storytelling and love of country music compelled her to leave California and begin the ambitious and challenging task of establishing herself as a country artist in Nashville. She immediately fell in love with the beauty of Tennessee. The fact that music was everywhere only intensified her feeling that she had found her new home! Since arriving in "Music City", Maddie has been blessed to co-write with some amazingly talented songwriters. These collaborations, along with the opportunity to work with many brilliant and accomplished producers and musicians, has led to the recording of her two country EPs. Looking forward, Maddie is excited to perform and promote her new music, as well as to continue songwriting. While it can be an arduous task for this high school honor-roll student, Maddie is determined to do whatever it takes to fulfill her dream of being a country artist. Maddie Logan just released her single "Stay Home" as well as her video for her single "Ghost Town". We want to hear from you! Interview with Lizzie Weber

Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Lizzie Weber over Zoom video! Born and raised in St. Louis, MO, now based in the Pacific Northwest, Lizzie began her journey as a songwriter living in Studio City, California, where she moved at twenty years old to pursue a career in acting. Two years after her move to Los Angeles, she found herself back in St. Louis writing, recording and producing her self-titled debut album as she pursued a degree in Journalism from Washington University. Lizzie's 2014 debut was well-received. A complete unknown to the St. Louis music scene, local magazine Eleven was the first to review the album, dubbing Lizzie "Your Favorite New Artist of 2014." Following the success of her debut, Lizzie appeared on the cover of the Riverfront Times as one of 'six artists to watch in 2015.' From there, Lizzie composed the music for the title track ("Vida Cafeinada") of the documentary feature film Caffeinated. The song is sung in English and Spanish, and features lyrics written by her father, John Schranck. On their first father-daughter collaboration, they set out to write a song that would stand as a reflection of the agricultural and social underpinnings of that wonderful daily tradition. In the fall of 2015, Lizzie produced and self-released her rendition of Nirvana's "Heart-Shaped Box." It was around that time that she met Grammy-award winning producer Sheldon Gomberg (Ben Harper, Ryan Adams, Rickie Lee Jones) and began work her song "Love Again" which was the product of another familial collaboration, this time with her elder brother, John Schranck Jr., who is responsible for the song's lush, orchestral arrangements. The two began sending Sheldon iphone demos in November of 2015 with the intention of recording the song at his Carriage House Studios (LA) in January of 2016, a pit stop on her way to her new home in the Pacific Northwest. After spending two years both in Seattle and on the island of Fidalgo, Lizzie Weber traveled to Iceland in March of 2018 to collaborate with the Academy Award-winning artist Marketa Irglova (The Swell Season/Once). Together, they produced and recorded two songs, "River" and "Free Floating" released in November and described by Glide Magazine as "a quiet folk song with angelic harmonies and lush instrumentation that swells into a dramatic, beautiful soundscape." Lizzie is proud to be releasing her latest single "How Does It Feel," the title track off a new EP due out later in January of 2021. An anthem of gratitude, "How Does It Feel" explores the meaning behind feeling 'safe' and finding strength in yourself with the support of loved ones. All three songs were written in isolation amid the early days of the shutdown due to the pandemic; accordingly, this theme is explored throughout all three songs and focuses on what can truly unite us all; empathy, and love. Interview with Sinplus

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Sinplus over Zoom video! Swiss born brothers duo Sinplus is an alternative rock hearted machine. There's nothing like the bond between siblings, and this bond is at the core of Sinplus. Ivan (Guitar) & Gabriel (Vocals) Broggini were musicians before they even knew it. They started writing songs at a very young age and quickly realized their love for dirty guitar riffs, pounding rhythms, and infectious melodies. Inspired by both the British sounds of Joy Division, U2 and The Cure as well as the American vibes of Jimi Hendrix, Jack White and The Killers, the duo began recording music in basements and self-producing their records. Sinplus started working with different producers around the world and playing as many gigs as possible, from tiny bars to arenas and festivals such Isle Of Wight and Moon&Stars. As an independent duo, they have claimed multiple awards and nominations, including an MTV Europe Music Award and two Gold singles. Sinplus also had the honour to represent their country at the Eurovision Song Contest and to support acts such as Roxette. 2019 was an intense and emotional year, they decided to return to California to breathe the West Coast rock vibe before spending time in Nashville. This new wave has brought a fierce determination to be part of a rock 'n roll revolution. In May 2020 they released "Escape", which marked the band's new era; the EP "It's Not About Being Good" summarises the band's Rock and New Wave essence. It also anticipates the new Album (Spring 2021). We want to hear from you! Interview with The Only Ocean

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing The Only Ocean over Zoom video! With a steady stream of buzz-worthy singles, EP's that have received rave reviews, and a new, re-energized line-up, the L.A alternative-rock band The Only Ocean is making waves in L.A's music scene. Formed in Lompoc, CA, during bandleader Wesley Hill's high school days, the band has evolved from an auspicious bedroom solo-project to a flourishing four-piece that's carved out its own unique place within the sea of playlists and festival stages in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara, eventually settling further south in Los Angeles, where all four members are from originally and their sound has continued to evolve and deepen with the addition of new members guitarist Tamara Simons, drummer Jonathan Palmquist, and bassist Jordan Kaufman. Bandleader Wesley Hill's love of the loud, wall-of-sound guitars of shoegaze favorites My Bloody Valentine and Ride, as well as the infectious pop rhythms of the Spice Girls has found a kindred spirit in Jonathan DeBaun (The Mars Volta, Omar Rodríguez-López, Antemasque, Mastodon, and Rituals Of Mine, Le Butcherettes) who has engineered, produced, and mixed all of their music to date. From 2015's self-titled debut, it's vulnerable, mature follow-up, TOO, singles such as 2017's "Good Morning" 2018's "Replaceable", which found a stronger emphasis on rhythm and experiments with the production, opting for a style uncommon to alternative rock music, to last year's "Fake Sunflowers", their larger-than-life "Still You Won't" EP and their newest single "Watch It Fall", this fruitful creative partnership between The Only Ocean and DeBaun as a band and producer has shown no signs of slowing down. All the while The Only Ocean has went from Hill's brainchild as a four-piece hometown favorite, as a trio, and a solo-venture has led them to return back to a tight energetic touring quartet with releases that are consistent not only in quality, but in praise, earning features in Grimy Goods, Impose Magazine, Northern Transmissions, Alternative Press for 2018's "Replaceable", a song whose lyrics were inspired by Hill's own struggles with body dysmorphia and anorexia and was featured as part of their "10 New Songs You Need to Hear this Week", to last year's single "Still You Won't" being heard in regular rotation on KROQ's "Locals Only with Kat Corbett", where it was voted #1 for three weeks and remained within the top 5 for seven weeks straight. The band has continued to record and tour at its own steady pace, supporting acts such as Cherry Glazerr, Dante Elephante, and Sure Sure and recently performed as a featured artist as part of Buzzbands.LA's "Artists to Watch 2020" showcase earlier in January 2020, in what has shaped up to be another promising start to another year together as a band.
