Interview with ELIZZA
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing ELIZZA over Zoom video! Singer-songwriter ELIZZA recently released, "London Eyes", co-written by Mars Today, an LA-based producer. No boundaries, no rules, highly unpredictable - this is how she describes her music and her latest single. On first listen, it might sound like a romantic story that draws from ELIZZA's personal experiences in the vein of previous releases "Habit", "Want to Keep" and "Can't Quit" - but this time "London Eyes" is a love letter to all the memories she has made in the beautiful city that she calls home: London. "The story is about my love and "sometimes" hate relationship with London. Since I moved here, I have been falling deeply in love with it but also find myself struggling to accept all that is London. "London Eyes" talks about how I feel the city is "keeping eyes" on me and not letting me go." "In one way, I like this constant pull, but I also realize that there are so many times I find it tough. It can be expensive but also presents opportunities, it's been a lot of years of working very hard to enjoy the best of this city. And then London has all the temptations you can imagine and more, you get addicted. At the end of the day, it's home and I love it," says ELIZZA. The singer's stylistic versatility and range has already been demonstrated in previous releases, but "London Eyes" introduces a boldly innovative twist on pop music. ELIZZA's songwriting process is grounded in spontaneity, but nonetheless goes deep and holds real meaning - both in poetic, insightful lyrics and skilfully crafted melodies. Speaking about the creative process behind "London Eyes", ELIZZA commented: "It was my second trip to Los Angeles and I had a session arranged with Mars Today. I definitely didn't think I would walk outside the studio that day with a song like this. Mars Today wanted to challenge me and I took it on, and when we were talking about our musical influences and what's happening in my life at that time, somehow the conversation was getting deeper about London as I was sharing with him more about me and who I am. All this conversation and jamming led us to writing this song in which London represents a "person" and how my personal experiences, my relationships, my ups and downs over the past 10 years in this city and with this city, have shaped my life." ELIZZA is committed to sharing her experience and emotion with the world through her music. Her passion and authenticity shows through in every note that she records, and is swiftly inspiring a growing international fanbase. She believes that, unlike anything else, the medium of music has the power to break boundaries, elicit deep feelings, and spark new ideas. Her heartfelt songs do just that. "London Eyes" is out now! Interview with Dilip & Otxhello
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing dilip & otxhello over Zoom video! Two RIAA Gold & Platinum selling producers dilip and otxhello have come together to release a sonically boundary pushing EP under the alias late year (the EP self-titled late year) released via Alpha Pup Records. Introducing late year, this self-titled EP is the product of a long-term friendship between producers dilip (Dilip Venkatesh) and otxhello (Othello Houston). The duo draws from two distinct coasts and cultures where their own significant introductions to music have cultivated a unique soundscape within their creative work. With dilip's sophisticated drum patterns and otxhello's smooth gospel and R&B melodies, late year is making expansive electronic soundscapes that redefine producer as essential artist. Bringing together a distinct project of seemingly cosmic sounds, instrumentalists dilip and otxhello are owning their own virtuosity, unconfined by any genre. The 21 & 23 year-olds have come together before to produce for artists like Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Skies, Lil Tecca, Gucci Mane, Soulja Boy, Roddy Ricch, and many more. Their work has already amassed 3 RIAA certifications, including platinum certification for their work with Lil Skies and gold certification for their work with Lil Tecca and Lil Pump. Interview with Flamingosis
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Flamingosis over Zoom video! Electronic and future funk producer Flamingosis unveils a feel-good animated video for his latest single 'Daymaker'. 'Daymaker' will be part of a wider album project coming later this year. Animated by Nick Parente, 'Daymaker' leads with a vocal sample from Flamingosis' father, who was a world-renowned professional frisbee player back in the 1970s-1980s. His father and uncle coined the term "Flamingosis" as a frisbee move, hence the moniker and the creative vision behind the animated video. Set in the midst of summer, 'Daymaker' takes the viewer on a unique visual journey through the city - from the viewpoint of the frisbee - to experience the best aspects of a perfect summer day. Following a retro 70s style-vibe, 'Daymaker' is filled with both charming and heartwarming moments that will immediately capture those well-known feelings of Summertime nostalgia. Flamingosis mentions his single Daymaker is, "Probably one of my favorite tracks that I have ever made. I hope it makes someone's day better after listening to it. The video is a reflection of everything in my life that has inspired the Flamingosis project. Frisbee, flamingos, the shore, funk and soul music, cartoons/anime and living life. I wanted all of that incorporated into a music video. Big thank you to Nick Parente and his whole team of animators for their hard work in bringing the vision to life." 'Daymaker' marks the second release from Flamingosis this year following his August single 'Wild Summer.' Also paying homage to his family heritage, the music video for 'Wild Summer' features exclusive footage of his father and uncle from their pro-frisbee days. 'Wild Summer' has become a fan-favorite and in heavy rotation via Spotify, racking in hundreds of thousands of streams to date. Flamingosis' (real name Aaron Velasquez) progressive future-funk style of electronic music has amassed him nearly 100 million lifetime streams across platforms, with over 100K followers across social media channels. He has performed and collaborated with many notable artists in the electronic space such as Big Gigantic, GRiZ, Gramatik, Madeon, Emancipator, Tokimonsta, Matoma, Yung Bae, Elliot Lipp and Pure Colors, and appeared on major festival lineups including Austin City Limits, Electric Forest, Okeechobee, Holy Ship!, Shambhala and more. Closing out the year with his latest track 'Daymaker', Flamingosis has solidified himself as an exciting artist to watch in 2021. We want to hear from you! Interview with Willie Jones
Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Willie Jones over Zoom video! Willie Jones knows that now is the time to reevaluate what the "American Dream" really is. Jones announces his #IHaveAnAmericanDream initiative, calling people to share their hopes for change in America. The initiative launched today and finds Jones asking an important question — "What is your dream for change in America?" "American Dream is a true patriotic anthem through my eyes," says Jones. "It's a story about my love for the country that my ancestors built. Honoring those who have come before me and having faith in those who stand with me in taking America forward. We cannot ignore the fact that so many of our black leaders - whether they're civil rights leaders, authors, musicians, athletes or artists - have propelled the evolution of not just black people but the entire human race. We evolve and the process must continue. While ignorance and racism go hand-in-hand, they're no match for intelligence and love. So let's spread some damn love. All power to the people." Donations made through the #IHaveAnAmericanDream campaign will benefit the National Museum of African American Music. Text 'AMERICANDREAM' TO 707070 or visit the NMAAM website at bit.ly/AMERICAN-DREAM to donate to continue educating the world, preserve the legacy, and celebrate the central role African Americans play in creating the American soundtrack. "We are incredibly excited to be partnering with WIllie on his initiative and honored by his donation," says Tuwisha Rogers-Simpson, Vice President of Brand and Partnerships for NMAAM. "This is the perfect moment for this song, this initiative, and for our museum to be supporting artists as they work to build better communities. Social justice and equity are key throughlines of the museum's story and NMAAM is committed to supporting artists, like Willie, who are working towards a better future for America." The National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM), opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, will be the only museum dedicated to educating, preserving, and celebrating the influence of African Americans on the American Soundtrack. Located in Nashville, Tennessee, NMAAM explores more than 50 styles of music created, influenced, and brought to life by African Americans through more than 1,700 artifacts and 25 interactive touch points across seven distinct, interconnected galleries. #IHaveAnAmericanDream coincides with Jones' upcoming single release "American Dream," out today. The song is a state-of-the-nation address that inspires a positive message of change and builds on the social conversation about race in America. While proud to be an American, Jones' song acknowledges that as citizens who are part of a community, we have a long way to go. "American Dream" is the standout track on Jones' forthcoming 'Right Now' album, due Jan. 22 via The Penthouse/EMPIRE. We want to hear from you! Interview with Nané
Together with American Songwriter and Sean Ulbs of The Eiffels, we had the pleasure of interviewing Nané over Zoom video! Nané is a high-energy six-piece outfit from Austin, TX who caught the attention of Brittany Howard in June 2020 with their "Blue Velvet" music video. Howard selected them as one of her five picks for this year's NPR Tiny Desk Contest, commenting on the groove while giving major props to lead singer Daniel Sahad who she applauded for his "no holds barred" performance. Sahad hails from the Dominican Republic. His grandparents are respectively Black, White, Latino and Arab (Lebanese). An offspring of globalism, Daniel comes from a lineage of courageous individuals who broke barriers to pursue their dreams. Called Nané as a term of endearment by his family in the Dominican Republic, Sahad determined the band's name with a communal approach in mind – when you call him Nané, you're family too. Nané (the band) came together in 2016 at The University of Texas at Austin where Daniel and guitarist, Ian Green, would drink and play cover songs for their friends. The pair quickly realized their potential to write original music together. The boys added bass player Scott McIntyre to the lineup and began writing their debut album while performing with Dayglow drummer, Brady Knippa, and Black Pumas keyboardist, JaRon Marshall. Nané rose quickly on the Austin music scene, playing a series of sold-out shows in front of the shimmering curtains of Stay Gold. In their first year as a band, Nané has headlined for crowds of over 1,000 people, as well as opened shows for Black Pumas, Bob Schneider, Eric Tessmer and Sir Woman. They also spent time in the studio recording their debut record with Grammy-award winning drummer, John Speice IV, on production and Adrian Quesada of the Black Pumas engineering and mixing. Their debut album was released on November 13, 2020! We want to hear from you! Interview with Tim Minchin
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Tim Minchin over Zoom video! Following a return home to Australia from LA in 2018, a string of sold-out theatre tours and his most recent acting and writing role which dramatically bore fruit in the acclaimed Sundance Now 2020 series Upright, Tim Minchin has spent the best part of the past two years pouring his considerable artistic energy into a globally anticipated studio album. Out today via BMG, Apart Together is a rich suite of disarmingly honest story-songs written with Minchin's inimitable wistfulness and whimsy. Although best known for his politically-charged punchlines and hit musicals, past indie favourites like Not Perfect and White Wine in the Sun, as well as the recent Missy Higgins release of his heartbreaking ballad, Carry You, have hinted at Minchin's breadth as a singer-songwriter. Apart Together is masterfully produced and co-orchestrated by Daniel Denholm, giving it a rare cohesiveness that lends itself to the lost art of listening to an album in a single sitting. Minchin has said, "I had no idea what this record was going to be about, and - having written for many years in many styles and with many different political, comedic and theatrical motives - the experience of just writing what I was feeling seemed pretty scary! But I'm very happy with the record we've made. It reflects my obsession with time, words, and with finding the beauty in the harsh realities of our lives. It is sometimes sad and sometimes grand and often whimsical and every now and then, though I try to resist it, pretty silly." The album includes six previously unreleased tracks, alongside a raft of 2020 singles; "Leaving LA" - a lyrical hybrid of pop and rock exploring the harshness and two-dimensionality of Hollywood; ballads "I'll Take Lonely Tonight" and "The Absence of You" - gracefully addressing wavering moments of faithfulness and fidelity; "Airport Piano" - a funky tribute to a midlife crisis; and the album's stunning title track "Apart Together" about the brutal beauty of love as we age. After some 20 years in the entertainment industry, Tim has enjoyed continued worldwide success as a composer-lyricist, actor, writer, director and comedian. But this 55-minute record from Australia's very own rock n roll nerd is a stark reminder that Minchin remains first and foremost a gifted and distinctive singer-songwriter. "Apart Together" is available for purchase and stream on all platforms HERE We want to hear from you! Interview with Jocelyn Mackenzie
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Jocelyn Mackenzie over Zoom video! Jocelyn Mackenzie is a Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter, artist, and psychic medium. Her conviction to craft creates music, art, and messaging that is sensual, personal, and powerful. Holding intimate balance between vulnerability and strength, the self-taught songstress delicately constructs bold melodies that weave universal stories straight to the heart. Her debut solo album PUSH is a chamber pop homage to healing through radical self-love, to be released on Righteous Babe Records. Written entirely for string quartet in collaboration with five talented composers, each song on PUSH bravely shines light on dark spots of her past. The fearlessness in her songwriting combined with the orchestral arrangements of each song alchemizes her pain into a poultice, making the album itself a testimony to hope, heartbreak, and what it means to be human. Likened to the sounds of tUnE-yArDs, Kate Bush, and Regina Spektor, her sonic world traverses diverse terrain, making no stranger of the pop earworm, the humble singalong, and the orchestral tearjerker. With a versatile library of influences including Sia, They Might Be Giants, and ambient soundscapes, her songs cure melody, meaning, and instrumentation into fine blends of the sacred and profane. In 2007, Mackenzie co-founded indie-folk trio Pearl and the Beard, with whom she enjoyed a rich national and international touring history over the span of their eight year career. Their infectious blend of soaring instrumentation, soulful harmonies, and genuine lyricism anchored their songs into their listeners' bones with depth and longevity. Musicians' musicians, Pearl's powerful stage presence shepherded them to perform alongside legacy artists such as Ani DiFranco, Neko Case, Bastille, Iron & Wine, Ingrid Michaelson, Lucius, Dar Williams, Lady Lamb, David Wax Museum, and Sharon Van Etten. In the years since Pearl released their farewell album, Mackenzie continued to write and produce music independently, launching her solo career with 2016's juicy pop offering the Unlovely EP. The release's five songs, including "Centenarian," co-written by Ani DiFranco, openly touched on intimate personal trials Mackenzie had endured. Her musical ability to reveal intimate emotional truths with an unwaveringly buoyant sound was the fertile ground in which PUSH was planted. PUSH is due out on January 29, 2021 via Ani DiFranco's Righteous Babe Records. We want to hear from you! Interview with Ricky Ducati
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Ricky Ducati over Zoom audio! Møme and Ricky Ducati Unveil "I Know" Music Video Latest Release from Forthcoming LP "Flashback FM" - out Feb 12th After announcing upcoming debut album "Flashback FM", Paris-L.A. duo drops symbolic, powerful hit "I Know" where their outer space 3D selves try to meet again in the official video. Watch "I Know" Video HERE Stream "I Know" On All Platforms HERE After their pop singles "Got It Made", "They Said" and "Moves", established French producer Møme (Jérémy Souillart) and prolific L.A. based Canadian Ricky Ducati (Midnight to Monaco) release powerful and symbolic hit "I Know", seeking true connections. Official video stars previous "Got It Made" video characters blooming into 3D modelings of Ricky and Jeremy trying to connect from different worlds - a nod to the digital nature of their remote collaboration from L.A. to Paris. Debut album "Flashback FM" available for preorder will drop on February 12th. Drawing on a myriad of influences from disco, soul, RnB and pop, "Flashback FM" is a homage to the past, a glorious kaleidoscopic trip back in time through the halcyon musical lineage of the 70's, 80's and 90's. After making it big with his hit "Aloha" (more than 200 million streams, triple diamond), Møme gained a following both in France and internationally with his first album "Panorama" (gold record) in 2016. He then released EPs written during his travels and played numerous shows around the world, performing live at most of the major French music festivals, culminating in a show at the Olympia and the Cigale in Paris. "Flashback FM" is a new direction for Møme, artistically speaking. It is more personal and timeless, a project that is a good deal warmer than what he has done so far. This time, it's the sun of the City Of Angels and its many inspirations ( Kraftwerk, Alan Parsons Project ), which acts as the impetus behind his trip to the past with "Flashback FM", an imaginary radio station - and perhaps an (in)voluntary wink at Flash FM, the famous radio from GTA Vice City, full of West Coast hits - perfectly matching the very special atmosphere of Los Angeles. A trip taken with Ricky Ducati (singer from Midnight to Monaco, Future Classic ), who has lived in the city for over ten years. The Canadian singer Ricky Ducati became known as the voice behind the group, whose singles caught the eye of Billboard, The Line of Best Fit, Wonderland and Vice. Ricky's love for the French Touch and filtered house, also takes inspiration from Barry Gibb, Brian Wilson and Jeff Lynne. As it is often the case these days, the two young men met first on the net. Five years ago, they slowly discovered each other's work on Soundcloud. This was followed by two 100% digital collaborations, including the hit "Sail Away" (2018), a certified gold with 15M streams worldwide, lauded by Billboard as "inspirational and upbeat". The pair's symbiotic chemistry was hard to ignore. Attracted by the imperfect music of an era when the computer had not yet taken over, the Franco-Canadian duo sees "Flashback FM" as a living, old-school album with an unabashedly modern sound. A collection of various electronic tunes, with an eye on the rearview mirror while continuing to speed straight ahead. With its Daft Punk-esque filters of the "Discovery" period, and its intelligent winks to disco, funk, electro, punk, rock West Coast and French touch, "Flashback FM" brings together everything a dance floor can generate in terms of positive energy. Welcome to the time capsule playlist of the future! We want to hear from you! Interview with Aimee Mayo
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Aimee Mayo over Zoom video! "I encourage EVERYONE to read this book. It is healing in so many ways. (Aimee) is such a talented writer." —TIM MCGRAW, Country music superstar and actor "Wow. I feel bad about getting married :) after reading this. It reads like a movie." — RICK SPRINGFIELD, Grammy Award winning musician, actor and bestselling author "OMG. Aimee's book is one of the best things I've ever read. Unbelievable writing, fantastic storyteller, and completely honest." —BART HERBISON, President of Nashville Songwriters Association International "All my greatest gifts have come wrapped in ribbons of pain." With this tantalizing opening line, I'd like to introduce you to Aimee Mayo and her debut memoir, TALKING TO THE SKY: A Memoir of Living Your Best Life in A Sh*t-Show (Little Blue Typewriter Press; Paperback; December 1, 2020). Aimee is a Grammy-nominated songwriter and one of the few women to receive both BMI's Country Song of the Year, and BMI's Country Songwriter of the Year—putting her in the elite company of Dolly Parton, Taylor Swift, and Loretta Lynn. Her tragic, yet triumphant story begins one Christmas eve in rural Alabama with the shocking news of her father's attempted suicide when she was just eight years old. Aimee was gifted a journal that fateful night in which she began to record her mind-blowing experiences with her bipolar father, who drifted in and out of her life, an abusive stepfather, caring, but deeply wounded relatives, and a nomadic childhood. Aimee expertly invites the reader into her wild youth growing up in the deep south, switching schools, bouncing from one family home to the next, and accidentally burning down her house...and car. After a close encounter with death, at the age of 19, Aimee eventually makes her way to Nashville to pursue her dream of becoming a songwriter, and falls right into the arms of another abuser. Aimee must once again, with wit and unflappable humor, pick herself up and walk away. Aimee's dream eventually became a reality, and now she's ready to share her incredible story. Her fifteen-year writing journey produced TALKING TO THE SKY, a universal story of faith over fear and triumph against all obstacles. It's a must-read for anyone trying to pursue their dreams despite it all. About AIMEE MAYO Aimee Mayo is a Grammy-nominated songwriter and author. Her songs have spent twenty-six weeks in the #1 spot on the billboard charts, and albums featuring her songs have sold over 155 million units worldwide. "Amazed," recorded by Lonestar, is her most popular song to date. In 2004 it garnered an 8 Million Plays award from BMI, vaulting it into the top 125 songs in the BMI catalog out of 6.5 million works. "Amazed" also won ACM (Academy of Country Music) Song of the Year, NSAI Song of the Year, and crossed over to the pop charts and spent two weeks at the top of the Hot 100. Mayo's song "This One's for the Girls," recorded by Martina McBride, went on to be a theme song for the morning show "The View." Aimee was also a judge on the CMT series, "Can You Duet." Mayo has penned songs for Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, Blake Shelton, Adam Lambert, Carrie Underwood, Faith Hill, Sara Evans, Backstreet Boys, Kellie Pickler, Caitlyn Smith, Boys to Men, and many more. TALKING TO THE SKY is her first book, almost 15 years in the making. She lives in Nashville with her husband, Chris Lindsey, their children and two dogs. We want to hear from you!
