Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Julia Gargano over Zoom video! Breakout star and American Idol alum Julia Gargano released her debut single "You Don't Get To", February 19th via 19 Recordings (Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Adam Lambert). Noted as Julia's first official self-release since the show aired in 2020, "You Don't Get To" follows her hit single "Swollen" with fellow American Idol contestant Francisco Martin (over 2 million streams across platforms.) Making her grand entrance as a solo artist, Julia Gargano pours her heart out on her new single "You Don't Get To" and demonstrates her innate ability to command a room with her raw talent. Introducing the single with grandiose piano chords and an array of soulful vocal notes, Julia Gargano flaunts her remarkable vocal range and songwriting skills on "You Don't Get To", where she tells a powerful story of a woman who reclaims her power in a failed relationship. Julia mentions "You Don't Get To" is a "song that I hold close to my heart. I wasn't ready to stand up for myself back when I was going through this breakup, but now a couple of years later, it feels like another chance to tell him how I really feel. This is my first single release post American Idol, so this one really means a lot to me. It's a special milestone and represents the beginning of an awesome chapter in my life. The whole process of putting this together was a learning experience I'll never forget." A season 3 favorite on the 2020 edition of American Idol, 22-year-old Julia Gargano stunned the judges in her first audition after performing an original single "Growing Pains" and left Katy Perry, Luke Bryant, and Lionel Richie all speechless. Katy Perry was so moved by her performance she even rose up out of her chair to hug Julia while Luke Bryan said she's only one hit single away from the Grammys (see here). Captivating audiences across America, Julia ranked as a top ten finalist on the show amidst the chaos and hardships of the pandemic. Immediately following the show, Julia was signed to 19 Recordings, a prominent NY-based record label responsible for launching the careers of American Idol alums including Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Adam Lambert, Pia Toscano and many more. Now one year later, Julia is having her breakout moment and will show the world her undeniable brilliance as a singer, songwriter, pianist, and recording artist. Born and raised in Staten Island, New York, Julia Gargano studied vocals at the acclaimed LaGuardia High School and composition at The College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York. Inspired by artists such as Brandi Carlile and Radiohead, Julia's writing style is beyond ordinary. Developing her passion at a young age, she was only a teen when she was writing, recording, and building what is now an extensive original music arsenal. Julia continues to create and perform her music showcasing her soulful vocals, unique progressions, and passionate lyrics. We want to hear from you! Interview with Tyler Shaw

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Tyler Shaw over Zoom video! As Tyler Shaw closes the chapter on his acclaimed "When You're Home" single, he delights listeners with an even gentler rendition of his most romantic song to date. Leading up to his next release, the piano version of "When You're Home" is captivating in its tenderness. With a charming piano melody that is complemented by gorgeous violin swells, Shaw takes the passion of the original rendition and transforms it into a deeply-intimate serenade. This rendition continues the momentum Tyler has built leading up to his third LP. "When You're Home" was Tyler's first release in 2021 and originally produced by Grammy-award nominated Jon Levine (Dua Lipa, Alessia Cara, Bebe Rexha, Drake), and written by Tyler Shaw, Alex Beitzke (James Arthur), and Henry Brill (Jack Garrat). Garnering praise from publications including 1883 Magazine, American Songwriter, Marie Claire, Parade, EUPHORIA., plus a wealth of international playlists including Spotify's 'New Music Friday', Apple Music's 'New Music Daily' and the cover of Amazon Music's 'Fresh Pop', the world is taking note of Shaw's talents. The "When You're Home" piano version shows Tyler's prowess in taking one song in a multitude of dynamic directions. It's no surprise "When You're Home" was dubbed one of the best love songs of 2021 (so far) by Marie Claire, raving, "'When You're Home' is the type of love song we could all use these days as we redefine what it means to feel safe and secure at home." With each take, Tyler shines in a way that keeps each version fresh, exciting, and leaves listeners finding out more. Last month, Tyler released the exhilarating electronic dance version of the single with world renowned Canadian DJ and producer Dzeko. Through a stimulating house production the two transformed "When You're Home" into an infectious club track. Now, with the release of "When You're Home," the remix and this latest version, Tyler's momentum continues to rapidly rise as he breaks into both the US and UK. Tyler Shaw's accomplishments are not bound to just his impressive discography as he has worked with some of the biggest artists across the globe such as Avril Lavigne, Fefe Dobson, Justin Bieber, Michael Bublé, Sarah McLachlan, Walk Off The Earth, toured with Selena Gomez and opened for massive international acts like Alessia Cara and Shawn Mendes. With a new single just on the horizon, Shaw is sure to impress on his upcoming LP. You can find more information about Tyler Shaw HERE We want to hear from you! Interview with AMO98

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing AMO98 over Zoom video! AMO98, age 22, was born in San Francisco to a Guyanese mother and a American father. His family moved to a small town in Maryland when he was young. In this more rural setting, he had his first encounters with racism and classism, and began writing poetry in middle school. At 14 he witnessed the death of a close friend, an experience whose painfulness he began to express through rap music. After finishing high school, AMO98 spent a year in the UK obtaining a degree in the culinary arts in anticipation of a potential career as a chef. This exploration of another passion of his, and his introduction to the contemporary urban UK music scene, only served to strengthen his conviction that music was his true passion, while augmenting his sound with some aspects of grime and UK drill. He returned to the state of his birth, settling down in Los Angeles, and began to build an independent catalogue. AMO98's music is characterized by infectious energy, catchy hooks, and a keen interest in storytelling. What sets him apart from the crowd is his profound sensitivity, which lies at the core of some of his most memorable songs, and allows him to tap in to a fuller range of emotion. AMO98's life has been defined by contrasts, and in this way, his work is a reflection of that life. His debut project, Atheist Angel, is as contradictory musically as its name and cover art suggest, and unquestionably succeeds in achieving the aim of every debutante artist, of making a powerful first impression. Interview with JJ Heller

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing JJ Heller over Zoom video! At some point in our lives, we all want someone to believe in us, to remind us there is beauty in the world, and to tell us that everything's going to be ok. THERE IS A CHILD IN ALL OF US, AND THAT'S WHO JJ HELLER MAKES MUSIC FOR. Her soothing voice and inspiring melodies blend with poignant lyrics to stir the hearts of listeners crossing generational boundaries. Heller and her husband, Dave, work creatively together co-writing and recording her songs. After 17 years of making music, Heller has eleven full-length albums to her name. JJ releases a song every month in 2017 (those releases alone have over 55 million streams). JJ doesn't fit squarely into a genre, so she's had to carve a path on her own. She works hand in hand with her husband, Dave (songwriting, performing, recording, video production, etc.) In 2020 she launched her podcast, Instrumental. We want to hear from you! Interview with The Dead Deads

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing The Dead Deads over Zoom video! Nashville-based rock band The Dead Deads are cherry-picking everything good about grunge, hard rock, indie, classic metal and punk, and creating memorable and fun alternative music for rock fans across generations and genres. They are that "up-and-coming" band that touring artists have known and loved at first sight. They've been named by many of their own heroes including Paul Stanley and Eric Singer (KISS), Lzzy Hale (Halestorm), Tom Petersson (Cheap Trick) Corey Taylor (Stone Sour/Slipknot), and Shaun Morgan (Seether) as one of the most refreshing new bands touring today, and they have conjured a wildly engaged fan club—The Dead Corps. With X's painted over their eyes, the band and fans conjure a rebellious return to fun, freedom and true fandom. McQueen on drums, Daisy on bass and Meta on guitar are a power trio with monster tone and raw rock energy. Heads bang as classic metal and grunge riffs are coaxed into pop hooks. Innocent child-like vocals are interrupted by screams and the occasional brutal growl, as finely crafted wordplay forces unexpected stops and odd time signatures into submission. The unexpected becomes the earworm. The Dead Deads explore sounds from 90's bands like The Pixies and Sonic Youth, to modern rock like Cage the Elephant and The Killers, all while keeping their grunge/punk rock roots. They name Failure, Bjork, Led Zeppelin, Blue Oyster Cult, NOFX, Pavement, Pink Floyd, Queen, Weezer, Helmet, Cream, Beck and The Pixies in amongst their hugely diverse list of influences. In a relatively short time, the band has played 4 cruises, done over a dozen US tours, two Canadian tours, and enlisted thousands of faithful Dead Corps fans. Seether, Bush, Chevelle, Stone Sour, Halestorm, Skid Row, KISS, 10 Years, and many others have invited The Dead Deads on tours as support. Notable past releases include both a live and a studio album, and 7″ split. The live album called The Dead Shall Dance, was recorded at The Cowan in Nashville, TN creating such buzz that Dead Corps flew in from all over the world to have their voices heard on the record which turned out to be the best example to date of the range, skill and growth of one of the touring world's favorite rock bands. "Sketches and Animation" was released in early 2018. This double EP included five fully-produced bangers with Matt Mahaffey (sElf) on the controls, as well as stripped-down acoustic versions of the same songs produced by Brian Carter. Easter eggs for fans abound in this inventive sampler. The single "Ghosts" was added to Spotify's New Rock playlist. In October 2020, The band released their debut single, "In For Blood" from the forthcoming album, "Tell Your Girls It's Alright", which is slated for an April 2021 release. The single has received a ton of positive feedback from fans and critics alike plus 500k streams in 3 weeks. It even landed them on the cover of Spotify's "New Noise" editorial playlist as well as 3 other editorial playlists (Fierce Femmes, All New Rock, Rock This). Apple Music included the single on their "Breaking Hard Rock" and "Breaking Rock" editorial playlists, as well as Amazon Music's "Fresh Rock" and "Breakthrough Rock". We want to hear from you! Interview with Soft Glas

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Soft Glas over Zoom video! Cuban-born singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Soft Glas shares his new single "Prudence and Poise" and the title of his forthcoming LP How Strange due out on March 19th. On "Prudence and Poise," Soft Glas takes his wide-ranging musical influences that includes Cuban rhythms and styles and combines it with his own dynamic resonance. With stark, lightly poetic lyricism and drifting beats, Soft Glas delivers something relatable and cathartic. Thematically, the song explores how things are often beyond our control and that finding a sense of direction comes with many unexpected turns along the way. Soft Glas says this of his new single: "From a production perspective, it's special to me because it's a clear example of how I've internalized my roots without necessarily being conscious of it. Growing up in a Cuban household, I was very familiar with traditional Cuban rhythms and styles (though I wasn't necessarily aware of their distinctions, names, or history). I produced the song instinctively, drawing from some of those rhythms I grew up listening to. A year after I finished this song, I helped my dad (Gonzalo Rubalcaba) produce/engineer his album 'Viento Y Tiempo,' a live album with Aymée Nuviola, comprising of new arrangements of traditional Cuban songs. Through working on this project, I learned about those rhythms I had internalized, and realized that I was using a variation of the Danzòn in 'Prudence & Poise'. It wasn't completely faithful to the traditional rhythm, but it was clear that the Danzòn had snuck into my subconscious at some point." In December, Soft Glas shared "Cyclones," the first single off his forthcoming LP. The track sits on the fringe of the bedroom-pop genre, with wistful, hazy instrumentals and jazz-infused guitar lines. Invigorated by vibrant yet serene melodies, the song is guided along with warm, yearning vocals. Narratively, "Cyclones" echoes the concerns of spending a lifetime in the mirror trying to pick apart all the things you couldn't change about yourself. The song was accompanied by a day in the life music video featuring photo stills. Joao Gonzalez, who is behind the Soft Glas moniker, is credited as the mixing engineer, post-production editor, and keyboard programmer on the 2021 Grammy nominated 'Best Latin Jazz Album' Viento Y Tiempo - Live at Blue Note Tokyo from Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Aymée Nuviola. Pre-order Soft Glas' How Strange vinyl due out March 19th here. More info: Growing up Joao idolized his father, renowned jazz-pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba, and dreamt of becoming a jazz musician himself. While music was ingrained in his DNA, Joao's own journey wasn't all that easy as he was denied acceptance to Florida State University's College of Music. Disenchanted by this news, he shifted his attention in college to Psychology. Joao dealt with imposter syndrome while attempting to keep the dream alive of becoming a full-time musician. After graduation, a spark ignited within. Joao picked up drumming again, relocated to NYC, and stepped into the role of music director and touring musician (Overcoats, Stalking Gia). Inspired by these experiences of working and touring with other artists, Soft Glas' music explores everyday anxieties all of us tend to deal with. Soft Glas released his debut EP Dos in 2016 and since has released 2016's Late Bloom, 2017's Orange Earth, and 2020's Stunned. He's been featured on Spotify's Bedroom Pop and undercurrents playlists and has garnered 9M+ streams across ~100K monthly listeners. We want to hear from you! Interview with Griff Clawson

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Griff Clawson over Zoom video! SoCal singer/songwriter Griff Clawson is releasing his sophomore single "2Lovely," a follow up to his debut pop record "Chasing Highs." Clawson made waves in 2020 after exploding onto the scene with vocal features on tracks produced by DJ global-stars such as ARTY, Matoma, Devault, Manilla Killa and Boombox Cartel. Side-stepping away from big collaborations, Clawson is trailblazing his own path as an alternative force in pop music with the launch of his solo project. His second single (out 2/3) "2Lovely" is completely self-produced, written and sung by Clawson. In the track, Clawson finds himself fearful in the moment that he's experiencing the peak of his relationship, worrying that "as good as this is right now, I know it won't last forever." Interview with Edwin Raphael

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Edwin Raphael over Zoom video! Edwin Raphael shares his new single "Time to Sink" off his forthcoming EP Staring at Ceilings due out February 26th via Dine Alone Records. The track begins softly, advanced by layered textures of peaceful vocals, sharp horns, refined guitars, and crisp drums. "Time to Sink" embraces stillness even when life continues to shift back and forth with light. In December, Edwin Raphael shared his single "Sea of Things" accompanied by its music video. On "Sea of Things" Edwin gives off Jeff Buckley vibes by bearing the same soulful intensity. It's a gorgeous, striking piece of work attributed to Edwin's innate talents and sheer efficiency with instrumentation. On the narrative front, "Sea of Things" is an ode to existence and dissociation catalyzed by anxiety. "Sea of Things" is a testament to the chaotic and often times, perplexing nature of the ocean and of living without control. This past fall, Edwin released his first single off the EP "Mild Sanity (feat. Juletta)." Deeply absorbing and incredibly cathartic all at once, Edwin's languid vocals and atmospheric melodies take listeners' minds outside the cruelties of the world's relentless wreckage. "Mild Sanity" is also elevated by NYC pop singer-songwriter Juletta's ethereal cadence. The track was lauded by Under The Radar, American Songwriter, EARMILK, Culture Collide, Indie Shuffle, and was included on Spotify's Folk & Friends playlist and NPR's New Music Friday playlist. Staring at Ceilings is a 5-song EP produced with Marcus Paquin (Arcade Fire, The National, Local Natives) that reflects the spectrum of human indulgence and the cost of our anxieties. More Info: "You can't win if you don't play" is a quote that lives within singer-songwriter Edwin Raphael. Ditching a career path carved out by his father, Edwin is headstrong on finding his own way in a world no longer concerned with archaic traditions. The 25-year-old artist, living in Montreal, Canada, uprooted from Dubai, creates music instilled with spiraling emotion, which resonates on both the shattered and enriching moments in life. Edwin released his debut LP Will You Think of Me Later? in 2019. Prior to that, he released a pair of EPs—Ocean Walk in 2015 and Cold Nights in 2017. With over 14M+ cumulative streams spanning ~175,000 monthly listeners, he's been featured on Spotify's New Music Friday Canada, indie pop & chill, Indie Chillout, Lush + Ethereal, Chill Singer-Songwriter, and Folk Favourites playlists. Interview with Maisie Peters

Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Maisie Peters over Zoom video! MAISIE PETERS UNVEILS NEW SINGLE 'JOHN HUGHES MOVIE' FIRST SONG FROM HER SOON TO BE ANNOUNCED DEBUT ALBUM LISTEN TO 'JOHN HUGHES MOVIE' HERE WATCH THE OFFICIAL 'JOHN HUGHES MOVIE' MUSIC VIDEO https://lnk.to/JHM-video Rising British pop singer-songwriter Maisie Peters has unveiled 'John Hughes Movie', the first single from her soon to be announced debut album, out today via Elektra Records. Listen HERE, and watch the official music video HERE. Penned by Maisie alongside Miranda Cooper (Girls Aloud, Sugababes, Kylie Minogue) and Henrik Michelson, who also produced the track with Afterhrs (Victoria Monét, Niall Horan), 'John Hughes Movie' is an infectious song about unrequited love, inspired by the legendary film producer and his classic coming-of-age teen comedies ('Sixteen Candles', 'The Breakfast Club', 'Pretty in Pink'). Subverting the narrative of said films with her typical wit and charm, the official video, directed by Louis Bhose (Loyle Carner, Arlo Parks, Lewis Capaldi), follows Maisie and her group of friends as they seek revenge on her non-committal prom crush. Maisie explains: "I wrote 'John Hughes Movie' when I was 17 about a house party that I had gone to. It's a really honest depiction of being a hopeless, melodramatic teenager, being awkward and drunk and getting your heart broken by people you don't even remember anymore. John Hughes films encapsulate that foolish romantic energy of high school and everything that I, a small town English wannabe Molly Ringwald wanted to be, but was not." Although a headline European tour and high-profile support slots with LAUV and Niall Horan were postponed in 2020, Maisie continued to showcase her multifaceted artistry throughout the year, appearing as the only British artist on the award-winning 'Birds of Prey' soundtrack (Megan Thee Stallion, Normani and Halsey), making a cameo appearance in Apple TV's critically-acclaimed first British scripted original, 'Trying', and participating in some of the year's standout virtual festivals (Clash x WaterAid #BathroomSessions, Unity 2020, Dork's Homeschool, YouTube's Stream #WithMe). Amassing over 200 million global streams in 2020 alone, Maisie released a string of new tracks, including 'Daydreams', 'Sad Girl Summer' and 'The List', which saw her collaborating with the likes of Ian Fitch and Daniel Tashian (Kacey Musgraves 'Golden Hour'), Cavetown and HONNE. She also teamed up with Grammy-nominated Canadian musician JP Saxe for joint single, 'Maybe Don't', which was playlisted across BBC Radio 1 / Radio 2 and garnered attention from Billboard and Uproxx, before rounding off the year by joining Griff for her 'Against The Clock' online series. Maisie was tasked with creating a cover of Taylor Swift's 'Exhile' in only one hour, resulting in a tweet from Taylor herself who stated that she's "a huge fan". Stay tuned for more news soon! ABOUT MAISIE PETERS West Sussex born singer-songwriter Maisie Peters has an innate gift for storytelling, crafting relatable, diary-entry songs which have racked up over half a billion global streams. Having won over the likes of Taylor Swift, Phoebe Bridgers and Sam Smith, she has progressed from busking on the streets of Brighton to selling out London's Shepherd's Bush Empire and headlining her own U.S. tour, well in advance of her debut album. Last year, she launched the Maisie Peters Book Club, inspired by her love of literature and storytelling. The virtual club has over 6 thousand followers and has hosted live Q+A's with an array of the most exciting new names in the literary worlds, including Naoise Dolan ('Exciting Times'), Florence Given ('Women Don't Owe You Pretty') and Elif Bautman ('The Idiot').
