Interview with John Smith
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing John Smith over Zoom video! Against the backdrop of a universally difficult 2020, songwriter and guitarist John Smith found himself facing personal and unrelenting change. In the spring of 2020, Smith and his wife lost a pregnancy, and his mother was diagnosed with cancer. With his touring schedule of two hundred days a year on the road suddenly on indefinite hiatus, for the first time in over a decade, John was home. "With newfound pain coming from so many directions, dealing with the uncertainty it brings, I closed the curtains and picked up the pen, turning to songwriting as a lifeline." It's unsurprising that the new songs reflect a shift in priorities. On his new album 'The Fray', Smith gives us an uplifting perspective on the path forward, but pays beautiful homage to the difficulties along the way. 'The Fray' is Smith's sixth studio album, and his vulnerability throughout is offered to his listeners, unadorned. "It's been a hell of a year, but I feel I've created my most honest work as a result, and as a necessity. A lot of these songs are about accepting that life is hard, but just holding on and trying to enjoy it anyway." Smith's stubborn optimism in tough circumstances shines through on the title track, in which he sings "Holding onto hope / I don't need a decent reason / Yes and though it disappears sometimes / It returns with every season". On the upbeat opening track "Friends", he gives a nod to old friendships, and the importance of maintaining connections in troubled times, singing "When the weight of the world gets heavy / You don't have to bear it alone /I know that burden and I'll be ready / To stop what I'm doing /I'll be there to help with the load" Despite his hopefulness, the emotional turmoil that Smith has faced this year is visceral throughout the album, as is his observance of the pain of those around him. On "She's Doing Fine", a delicate guitar underpins the lines "Walking slowly / The pain of the memory / Fades in the eyes". A melancholy flugelhorn seems to cry out for hope in the darkness as it plays out the song. Smith co-wrote a couple of songs for the album whilst on tour before the pandemic. Driving a rental car from Asheville to Nashville, John stopped to write the standout track 'Eye to Eye' with North Carolina-based Sarah Siskind. The Americana influence is a red thread throughout the album which beautifully compliments Smith's unmistakeable British Folk roots. Smith co-produced 'The Fray' with long-time friend and producer Sam Lakeman. They recorded at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studio, with pianist Jason Rebello (Sting, John Mayer), bass player Ben Nicholls (Seth Lakeman, Nadine Shah), Drummer Jay Sikora (Paolo Nutini) and Jessica Staveley-Taylor of The Staves. The album is a true reflection of the times, with American collaborators Sarah Jarosz, Courtney Hartman, The Milk Carton Kids and Bill Frisell recording remotely and sending contributions over international borders. John's frequent touring partner Lisa Hannigan contributed via a virtual studio session in Dublin. Smith was born in Essex and raised on the Devon seaside. Known for his intimate songwriting, his honey-on-gravel voice and pioneering guitar playing, he has spent the last fifteen years touring internationally and has amassed over 40 million streams on Spotify. As a session musician he has played guitar with artists as diverse as Joan Baez, David Gray, Joe Henry, Lianne La Havas and Tom Jones. We want to hear from you! Interview with Eliza & The Delusionals
We had the pleasure of interviewing Eliza & The Delusionals from the House of Blues in San Diego! *This interview was recorded prior to the COVID-19 pandemic* Eliza & The Delusionals have never been afraid to think big. "The goal has always been to play huge shows," says singer-guitarist Eliza Klatt, who founded the Northern New South Wales/Gold Coast band in 2015. Over the past few years that dream has slowly become a reality as the group's sweetly snarling, anthemic brand of indie rock has led to supports with artists such as Grinspoon, Nothing But Thieves, Dear Seattle and Killing Heidi, appearances at landmark festivals such as BIGSOUND, Falls Festival and Canadian Music Week, and major radio support both locally and internationally. After a slew of well-received early singles, the band's climb was kickstarted in earnest by 2017 debut EP The Deeper End. A potent mix of buzz-saw guitars, ear-worm melodies and Klatt's undeniable vocal hooks, singles such as "Salt" instantly caught the attention of national broadcaster triple j. "We're just writing songs we want to hear ourselves," says guitarist Kurt Skuse. "You hear us in our purest form in our writing." Skuse and Klatt go back years, living down the street from each other as kids. They reconnected in the Gold Coast's thriving band scene, with Skuse joining alongside guitarist Ashley Martin, a friend of Klatt's at university, to solidify the line up. The extended periods on the road since have acted as a steep learning curve, while fusing the band into a tightly-wound live unit. "We learned how to put our live set and show together through the experience of watching bigger-scale bands do it" says Klatt. You can hear that experience in recent singles "Pull Apart Heart" and "Just Exist", the first taste of the group's forthcoming second EP. The latter in particular introduces a more mature subtlety to their sound, with Klatt ruminating on finding a balance between creativity and good mental health against a slowly building and insistent melody. The song has connected in a big way, particularly in the United States and Canada, with Alt Nation – the flagship alternative rock channel of SiriusXM – crowning it their 'Critical Cut' and adding "Just Exist" to high rotation. The listeners responded in kind, voting it Number 1 on the Weekly ALT18 countdown, where it remained in the Top 10 for more than a month. The flow on effect has been remarkable, with more than a dozen stations across America – including national network Music Choice and influential outlets in New York, California, Texas and Florida – adding "Just Exist". The band's Spotify listenership has jumped by nearly 100% overall and a whopping 400+% in America, while "Just Exist" has exceeded 600,000 streams. Recently crowned Amazon's Music's "Weekly One" and "Song of the Week" in the States, the band's Shazams have also surged by more than 900%. Having signed with renowned US agency APA for North America, the doors are well and truly starting to open for Eliza & The Delusionals internationally. Those huge shows are getting closer every day We want to hear from you! Interview with Kidd G
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Kidd G over Zoom video! With a rare gift for turning his hometown experiences into natural melodies, Kidd G has found tremendous success by staying true to his roots. As a kid growing up in small-town Georgia, he first started creating his own songs at the age of 15, and soon arrived at a gritty but melodic sound equally inspired by classic country and hip-hop. On the heels of his chart-climbing breakthrough single "Dirt Road"—an October 2020 release whose video surpassed 5 million YouTube views in little over a month—Kidd G has now shared his debut EP; the powerfully heartfelt Teenage Dream. Born Gabriel Horne and raised in the town of Hamilton (population 1,130), Kidd G got his start singing at the age of 11 with the full support of his music-loving family (his great uncle played bass in Fleetwood Mac, and both his parents are hobbyist singers). Within several years he'd set up a makeshift studio in his bedroom and started recording with his friends, partly mining inspiration from new age rappers like Juice WRLD. One of his first viral moments was his video, "Letter to Juice", a minute-long verse over a melancholic beat paying homage to the late artist. But while early tracks like his debut single "Sorry" lean toward traditional hip-hop, Kidd G later brought an element of old-school country into his songwriting. "I love country because it feels so natural to me, and you can really tell stories in the songs," he notes, naming Hank Williams Jr. among the artists he grew up on. As he continued posting his music on SoundCloud, Kidd G soon amassed a dedicated following undeniably drawn to his down-home charm and the honest detail of his lyrics. With the arrival of "Dirt Road," that following grew exponentially as Kidd G saw the nostalgia-soaked track gain serious traction on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and land on coveted Spotify playlists like Fresh Finds Country and Next From Nashville. Teenage Dream is a perfect showcase for Kidd G's sound and sensibilities, merging potent beats with earthy guitar work and his warm yet dynamic vocal delivery. On the EP's title track, for instance, Kidd G shares a poignant portrait of high-school love, beautifully capturing each memory in his bittersweet drawl and masterful flow. "That song's about my truck, my ex-girlfriend, the place where I live," he says. "I love my town because it's simple and slow, but there's always something fun going on." Although he collaborated with producers like Morgan O'Connor and Bonnie Dymond on Teenage Dream, most of the EP was written solely by Kidd G, who purposely avoids putting any pressure on his creative process. "I really just go off my emotions and whatever I'm feeling at the time, then start laying down some ideas," he says. "Once I come up with that main hook for a song, the whole thing comes together." Thanks to that deliberately laid-back approach, all of Kidd G's music unfolds with a carefree energy that lightens any mood. "A lot of my songs come from me just getting stuff off my mind, and I hope it helps other people get through the day and get through their problems—maybe make life a little easier for them," he says. But as Kidd G reveals, the ultimate test of a song's power invariably happens in his hometown. "Most of the time when I'm making a song I'm thinking about how my friends will react to it," he says. "That's when I know something's good: when I'm working on it and I start thinking, 'I can't wait to get back home and show this to my friends.'" And as he looks to the future, Kidd G plans to maintain that hometown spirit while massively expanding his musical horizons. "My goal is to get a platinum record," he says, "reach No. 1 on Billboard, sell out arenas, and perform in front of millions of people." We want to hear from you! Interview with Dave Herrera
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Dave Herrera over Zoom video! Dave Herrera has worked as a commercial broker at Colliers International for the past several years, where he is required to take a personality test. He has also taken that same test at home with family and friends, and consistently, the test identifies him as a "defender." By textbook definition, Herrera is observant and steadfast, yet warm and unassuming, paying careful attention to the intricate details of life. "It's an introvert in a way. You analyze rooms and try to figure out what environment you're in," Herrera elaborates. The personality type suits the singer, songwriter and real estate agent who notes that he's often awe-inspired by his surroundings. "I'm thinking at a 30,000-foot level," he observes. "That's how I look at the world." Raised in Sacramento, Calif. by a single mother and his grandparents, high school was a formative season in Herrera's life. It's when he found the rundown, '69 Chevrolet Chevelle that would become his first car, spending endless hours pouring over the antique vehicle that was both a necessity and a cherished heirloom. "I'd work on my car in the morning to get to school. I'd basically go with grease under my nails smelling like exhaust," he recalls. "I put my heart and soul into the car. It's something that I didn't want to ever let go of; it's a part of my life. It's really all I had at the time." It's also when he began dipping his toes into music, writing songs and playing guitar with his friends, calling the craft "a real passion." Viewing music more as a hobby than a profession at the time, it wasn't until his grandfather's health began to deteriorate before his passing - a man he thought of as a father figure - that is when Herrera's mindset about pursuing music professionally started to evolve. But it wouldn't be until adulthood that Herrera solidified his desire to be an artist. After attending a real estate and development class at California State University Sacramento, he soon had a growing interest in commercial real estate brokerage, currently working as Executive Vice President at Colliers International. Along the way, music was the invisible element guiding him along, receiving consistent signs that it was part of his destiny. One such sign arose when Herrera met Bret Bair and Eric Rushing, previous owners of Sacramento music venue, Ace of Spades (now owned by LiveNation). Through commercial brokerage, the three businessmen have since teamed up to open multiple live music venues across the city with Bair and Rushing owning the businesses and booking the acts, and Herrera representing them on the real estate side. The positive reinforcement Herrera received after playing some of his songs for Eric, esteemed audio engineer Jeff Balding (who mixed and co-produced the music) and a couple of his own close friends, who also have a sharp ear for music, reassured that he has a gift worth sharing. Interview with Mat Kearney
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Mat Kearney over Zoom video! Unexpected, unplanned moments often yield the most beautiful results. That's how Mat Kearney arrived at his sixth album, January Flower, a collection of honest, stripped down songs that brings the Nashville-based, Oregon-born musician back to his singer-songwriter roots. In January of 2019, Mat packed up his recording gear and decamped to an isolated house in Joshua Tree with his childhood friend Marshall Roeman, a painter, and songwriter Eli Teplin. The plan was to use their two weeks in the desert to create with a full recording studio, but a massive storm hit, deluging the area in record rainfall and shutting down their power. With the light of the wood burning stove to guide the way, Mat took the opportunity to explore music from a new angle, armed with only his voice and an acoustic guitar. When Mat returned to Nashville he carried that spirit into the rest of the writing and recording process, re-teaming with his longtime producer Robert Marvin, who also helmed his 2006 breakout Nothing Left To Lose and 2011's Young Love. The goal was to create songs with no other intention than simply the joy of making music. For Mat, the year-long process was about rediscovering why he loves writing songs in the first place. He brought in several older songs, including "Can't Look Back" and "Running In Circles," reimaging them to fit in with the newer work and kept the instrumentation simple. "Pontiac" was inspired by Bruce Hornsby, with the band tracking live to a pop backbeat, while "Stuck In the Moment" emphasize an organic, approachable aesthetic that allows Mat's emotional vocals to lead the way. January Flower recalls Kearney's early work on his gold-selling album Nothing Left To Lose, veering in a different direction from his 2018 album CrazyTalk. The album was also inspired by his acoustic tour in the fall of 2019 to promote the 10th anniversary of The City of Black and White, which was the last time Mat was on the road before everything shut down in the pandemic. His vast touring history, which includes treks with John Mayer, Sheryl Crow and NEEDTOBREATHE, is evident in the vibrancy of the songs, as is his enduring success as a recording artist. The musician has released five albums in the Billboard Top 200, with three in the Top 20, and has seen his dynamic songs placed on Grey's Anatomy, 30 Rock and NCIS. Overall, he has over 2.5 billion global streams. It's been a long and winding path to where Mat is now, but it's a journey he's happy to still be taking. We want to hear from you! Interview with William The Conqueror
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing William The Conqueror over Zoom video! Acclaimed UK band William The Conqueror released their new album Maverick Thinker on March 5th through Chrysalis Records. The first single, "Quiet Life," is a charming, slow-building lament that broadens out like a rolling landscape with a fuzz and crunch that gets toned down for something altogether more reflective. Of the new single, frontman Ruarri Joseph stated, "With 'Quiet Life,' we wanted to step outside the sound of the trio and build some walls, add some layers for this one. It's a trippy, fuzzy wander down someone else's memory lane, so we went cinematic." Maverick Thinker was recorded out in LA (alongside producer Joseph Lorge) at the legendary Sound City Studios right ahead of last year's March lockdown, and put the band behind the glass and treading the same carpet as Nirvana, Johnny Cash, Neil Young, and Fleetwood Mac. A cursory listen to this new record suggests they might well have inhaled the spirit of them all. But to compare them with the greats does the West Country's William The Conqueror a disservice for they sound unlike any of the above. These are slinky, swampy rock 'n roll songs, razor sharp, dripping with the blues and an oft sardonic vocal delivery by Ruarri, the band's songwriter chief and lead vocalist. Written in the English countryside, it's made for sticky basement bar room stages where they dare to come alive with a vision of bigger rooms and broader stages. Taking that zest to tape has lost none of that fervour. William The Conqueror first began teasing new music last year with "Wake Up," a gorgeous slice of laissez-faire college rock that sits somewhere in a disorganized melee between Pavement, Speedy Ortiz, and Built to Spill. The Times named it an Essential Track and called it an "agreeably low-slung piece of alt-rock." It was followed by their previous single "Jesus Died A Young Man," a song the band described as a rejection of "bad teachers and good faith." Clash Music called it "guitar pop of real depth and nuance." Across ten tracks, Maverick Thinker introduces this British band to a wider audience who crave something with a little darkness around the edges and melodies that reverberate for weeks. It's part three of a trilogy that really doesn't require prior knowledge of parts one and two, but should whet the whistle to investigate backwards into a tight back catalogue where the songs do all of the talking. At the tail end of 2020, William The Conqueror also quietly launched a self-titled podcast series. Written and narrated by Ruarri, it's an audio book about a fictional, yet part autobiographical, musician trying to make ends meet, trying to be seen and to be acknowledged, and trying harder still not to care. It's funny, wise, daft, endearing, and often melancholy. Charmingly naïve and wincingly relatable, it's a fun listen, and whilst it's not devised as an accompaniment to the music (nor vice versa), it's a fine package by a fiercely creative group. New episodes are released weekly, listen to the podcast HERE. We want to hear from you! Interview with Will Johnson
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Will Johnson over Zoom video! Will Johnson's 7th solo album "El Capitan" is out now. Recorded over three days in June 2020 at Ramble Creek Recording in Austin, Texas with contributions from Britton Beisenherz, Thor Harris (of Shearwater, Xiu Xiu), and Lindsey Verrill (Little Mazarn). It's a more subdued album than last year's Wire Mountain, with Johnson using only his Stella acoustic guitar to record. Here's his description of these songs: There's a simple "mornin"" that is exchanged amongst many early bird runners as they pass. I've noticed this since I was nine or so, and have taken different interpretations from it: Have a good run. Good luck. Have a good day. Stay safe. We're a part of something, moving in harmony. Look at us fucking go. It's pleasing in its way; a show of support. The location might be a utility road in Wyoming or a city park in St. Petersburg. I don't know the root of it, or how this transfer of pleasantry started amongst this cut of humanity. It's never been: "morning.." or "good morning" or even "g'mornin". It's just: "mornin'". There's a musicality to it, and I think it means more to me these days, as do the moments outside. It's where the lines, the choruses, and some full songs are coming from, now more than ever. This new record started years ago at a friend's dining room table in Portland, building up on long desert drives, in hotel bathrooms, at casino bars, and on these regular runs. Over years, the songs mortared themselves together into something I thought fit together. Some are now quite old, and a couple are pandemic-new. It feels like we're at the mercy of nature now more than ever, and the quietude of this patch of time made sense to document them and finally get them out. I took a hundred-dollar Stella guitar to my friend, Britton's, and we spent three days, distanced, building something. We let go of old habits, peeled things back, and tracked it all to a Tascam 388. We ate tacos, drank Tecate and found happiness in the act of moving again in the early summer heat. There's tape hiss, and there are imperfections. Thor Harris and Lindsey Verrill contributed beautifully from afar. The other night I took to another run to feel the night's breeze, and maybe see if another melody might be out there. It was late, and now I sometimes take to running right down the middle of once-busy streets. Another night runner approached and moved over, giving wide berth. He put his mask up, and I pulled my bandana up from my neck. There was compassion in the movement of the dance. He flashed a peace sign, and I flashed one back. It was a needed reminder that most of us are still moving together, just from different places now. I headed back to the middle of the road, and we headed our opposite directions, giving chase to whatever kind of solace and satisfaction we could find in that quiet night. Chasing clarity in the stillness of the world's new, oft-strange chapter. We want to hear from you! Interview with Tiggi Hawke
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Tiggi Hawke over Zoom video! London based pop singer/songwriter Tiggi Hawke recently release her new single "High Season" which comes after the successful release of Tiggi's summer dance hit "Electric Sun." Given the current state of the world with COVID-19 and clubs being closed this summer Music4Lovers said, "This intensely, passionate track does a good job taking you back to the bar lined streets of San Antonio, Ibiza." This all followed Tiggi's 2019 emotionally charged hit single, "For What Its Worth" with production duo SONDR (Lana Del Ray, Meghan Trainor), which has racked up over 5 million streams on Spotify since its release. Now Tiggi is back with a new electric dance hit for her fans across the globe with "High Season" produced by Gil Lewis (U2) and Toby Scott (Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen). When asked about her new single "High Season" Tiggi said, "I think High Season is a crazy vortex of double meanings! It was written on a writing camp with some insanely talented people on one of those amazing days when everyone is on the same wavelength and everything just clicks! This single is a personal one, it's about staying 'high' emotionally, something I openly struggle with, and that weirdly trippy/euphoric feeling when it actually does happen. It feels very liberating (and slightly scary!) to be so open emotionally and lyrically in this song and to share that almost out-of-body experience which I find myself looking for." Hailing from London, Tiggi first started her singer/songwriter journey at age 15 and has mastered the art of singing straight from the heart with breathtakingly raw lyrics based on her own life experiences. She has since gone on to create a plethora of pop gems that resonate with her fans, earning her support across Radio 1, Kiss, Wonderland, EDM.com, Phoenix Magazine, FAME, Music News and Record of the Day and well over ten million streams, 450K+ monthly listeners. Interview with Wheatus
Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Wheatus from the Soda Bar in San Diego! *This interview with conducted prior to the COVID-19 pandemic* It's hard to believe Wheatus are celebrating the 20th anniversary of their debut album and still-ubiquitous single "Teenage Dirtbag." Yes, that's right - Dirtbag is no longer a teenager. In honor of this anniversary, Wheatus will release a new and expanded edition of their now classic debut album, in conjunction with a world tour. Says Brendan B Brown, "We found demos of ten more songs from throughout the band's history, that had such an album-one vibe that they never made it on to our more recent records. So now we're giving them a proper chance to be heard. The twenty-song version of the album will feature the originally-conceived track listing and sequence, plus the extra ten songs that have finally found a home on a record." The band spent the beginning of 2019 doing a coast-to-coast, almost entirely sold-out tour of America opening for (and then collaborating with) Mike Doughty on his Ruby Vroom 25th Anniversary shows. The band's first proper live album, M (Live in America), came from these shows and was released April 10th, 2020. This collection exclusively features material from their sophomore album on, serving as a celebration of their longevity and as a compliment to the forthcoming re-release of album 1. In addition to working on the aforementioned re-release of album 1, Wheatus are also working on their seventh full-length album & recording monthly live-in-the-studio concerts for fans on the subscription service Patreon.
