Property over politics: How the UK’s real estate sector is key to delivering a levelled-up UK

In this episode of the EG Property Podcast, EG editor Samantha McClary is in discussion with four experts from across the built environment to understand how the UK’s cities are “levelling up” – or not – regardless of the politics. Levelling up was barely mentioned in the recent “mini budget”, reports say barely any of the levelling up funds have actually been spent and EG figures show that since the first time then PM Boris Johnson utter those two words “levelling up” in 2020, our regional cities continue to lag behind the capital. Investment is 23% lower, take up 12% lower and average rents a whopping 54% lower. Government is unlikely to really be able to level up this country, so how can our cities and the built environment make sure that they can? Helping to figure out the answer are: Deborah Gordon Brown, partner, Shoosmiths Kat Martindale, director and head of ESG research, Savills Simon McCabe, chief executive, Scarborough Group International Jackie Sadek, regeneration practitioner, Urban Strategy This episode runs as an aural accompaniment to EG’s UK Cities Guide , which looks at how well our cities are performing when it comes to the green agenda and the importance of the role of infrastructure – physical and digital – when it comes to creating an equal UK.

Fundamentals of the Future: Adding an H to ESG

Just before the Covid-19 pandemic hit, 10 years on from a landmark review by University College London’s Sir Michael Marmot’s into health inequalities in England, the Institute of Health Equity published a follow-up report exploring just how closely health and life expectancy are tied to socioeconomic position and the conditions in which people live and work. Some of the findings were bleak, underlining that health inequalities had worsened over the preceding decade. In this panel discussion from EG's recent ESG Breakfast Briefing, our guests explored the role real estate and the built environment have in addressing these worsening inequalities. Joining deputy editor Tim Burke are: Rob Charlton, chief executive, Space Group Pete Gladwell, group social impact and investment director, L&G Group Divya Hariramani Herrero, sustainable design and wellbeing service line lead, Longevity Cara Imbrailo, partner, Charles Russell Speechlys Federico Montella, head of ESG and sustainability, Lambert Smith Hampton Jane Mudd, leader, Newport City Council

From £50 weekend jobs to £50bn of real assets; Aviva Investors’ head of responsible investment on carpentry, cynicism and the simple mantra that demystifies ESG

On this episode of Tech Talk radio, host Emily Wright is joined by Aviva Investors' head of responsible investment Ed Dixon as he cuts straight to the heart of what ESG is really all about - and it's not acronyms.  A former carpenter who lost his job in the 2008 recession, Dixon talks about his career path from "fifty quid weekend jobs" to "£50bn of real assets 20 years later" and discusses why "it's OK" that head of sustainability and director roles in large real estate companies are increasingly being taken up by younger, less experienced people. "Young people are taking on incrementally bigger and bigger roles in this space. They are taking risks, they are getting the leadership team on board and they are delivering great stuff. I think it's working." Dixon also touches on the transition from investing in climate solutions such as green buildings to tackling climate in its entirety and why finding the "bright spots" in the sector and ignoring those with their heads down resisting change is crucial to progress.  And, in a direct message to listeners, he told them how they could tell whether or not they are on the right tracks as we navigate "a time of change tantamount to the industrial revolution" as soon as they had switched off the podcast.  To find out more, tune in now.
