Pubs have witnessed a remarkable comeback post-lockdown with the public viewing the sector with a renewed sense of importance, although challenges undoubtedly lie ahead, according to Fleurets director and head of national agency James Davies. Fleurets currently leads the Radius On Demand Rankings for the UK’s hotel and leisure sector, with almost 300,000 sq ft of space transacted this year. Davies believes pubs have enjoyed a honeymoon period in the post-lockdown period, with many new units opening up in what were traditional retail spaces. However, he also believes the sector needs help with VAT rates and with the ability to hire overseas workers if it is to overcome the recessionary storm clouds currently gathering.

The big agents are suffering from a $400m drop in earnings from capital markets. And everyone is "hacked off" with the abrupt demise of investment zones. Joining Sarah Jackman for this month’s edition of In on the Act is EG columnist and joint head of Falcon Chambers Guy Fetherstonhaugh KC. And the topic this month: the Commercial Rent (Coronavirus) Act and the rent arrears arbitration scheme established under it for the recovery of ring-fenced rent arrears. Regular listeners will know that Guy and Sarah first spoke about the Act in April’s podcast and, now that the window for instructing arbitrators has closed, they look at what has happened since and whether the scheme might pave the way for greater use of arbitration as a method of dispute resolution in the future.
