Hormonal Management of NETs: Syndromes and Symptom Control

In this episode of NETCast, which was taped live during NANETS' Cleveland NET Regional Educational Conference, leading NET medical experts held a discussion of Hormonal Management of NETs: Syndromes and Symptom Control, moderated by Amr Mohamed, MD, UH Seidman Cancer Center, University Hospital, and guests Lauren Fishbein, MD, PhD, University of Colorado, and Thorvardur Halfdanarson, MD, Mayo Clinic. Dr. Mohamed, who also served as Course Director for the NET Regional, is a medical oncologist at UH Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center, focusing on development of targeted therapies for patients with GI cancers, especially neuroendocrine tumors and colorectal cancer. Dr. Fishbein's research interests are to understand what causes neuroendocrine tumors to form (pheochromocytomas, paragangliomas, gastrointestinal and pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors). She is particularly interested in studying the inherited and tumor specific genetic changes that lead to tumor formation. Dr. Halfdanarson specializes in GI oncology. Dr. Hallet is Associate Scientist, Evaluative Clinical Sciences, Odette Cancer Research Program, Sunnybrook Research Institute, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Surgery, University of Toronto Surgical Oncologist, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Adjunct Scientist, Institute of Evaluative Clinical Sciences (ICES). As a surgeon investigator, her research focuses on health services population based research to examine processes, patterns of care, and outcomes of hepato-pancreato-biliary malignancies. In particular.Dr. Singh is a Medical Oncologist and Affiliate Scientist in the Odette Cancer Research Program at Sunnybrook Research Institute. He is also Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto. Dr. Singh's research interests include neuroendocrine carcinomas as well as population health and cancer care utilization discrepancies. He is co-head of a newly established multi-disciplinary specialized neuroendocrine clinic at Sunnybrook’s Odette Cancer Center, one of the first in the region. He is involved in numerous activities in the care of neuroendocrine cancer including the role of ki-67 as a prognostic marker, and the utilization of health care resources in the diagnosis and treatment of neuroendocrine tumour patients.Our guests are Dr. Callisia Clarke and Dr. Sten Myreheug. Dr. Clarke is Associate Professor, Medical College of Wisconsin. She specializes in Surgical Oncology with a focus on tumors of the upper gastrointestinal tract, sarcomas, melanomas and regional therapies for advanced malignancies. She is past president of the North American Neuroendocrine Tumor Society, a longstanding member of the NCCN Neuroendocrine Tumor Guidelines panel, and past chair of the NET Task Force of the NCI Gastrointestinal Steering Committee.Dr. Pamela Kunz is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine (Medical Oncology); Director, Center for Gastrointestinal Cancers at Smilow Cancer Hospital and Yale Cancer Center; Chief, GI Medical Oncology; Vice Chief, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Prior to joining Yale, Dr. Kunz was Director of the Stanford Neuroendocrine Tumor Program, Leader of the Endocrine Oncology Research Group, and Director of the Neuroendocrine Tumor Fellowship. She is an international leader in the clinical care of patients with neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) and is advancing the field through clinical trials and translational science that are defining the next generation of therapies for patients with this rare diagnosis.
