Ethical Foster Care, Weaponized Adoption, Saviorism, & How Deconstruction Plays Into It All with @elliecoburn - Ep. 64

TW: rape, pro-life propoganda, racism & inequity towards BIPOC, medically assisted suicide, adoption trauma, white savioirism, Christian supremacy, religious trauma Alright y'all, buckle up. This week we have the incredibly intellectual and insightful, Ellie Coburn (she/her), on for a MASSIVE convo about white saviorism, weaponized adoption, abortion access, and Christian supremacy. This is a pretty lengthy and incredibly important conversation. For those of us who grew up in evangelical communities, we are all too familiar with the Christian supremacy and pro-life propaganda that is engrained in adoption conversations. Ellie is someone with personal experience as a foster care parent and adoptive parent, and she has wildly valuable opinions on the topic. If you grew up in mission culture and have been taught that you are meant to “save,” this is the conversation for you. If you want to learn more from Ellie or connect with her, you can connect with her on Instagram @elliecoburn. She also wanted to share a few literary resources for you all!- Torn Apart by Dorothy Roberts- Shattered Bonds by Dorothy Roberts - Jesus and John Wayne by Kristin Kobes Du MezEllie also speaks about a phenomenal article from the Washington Post written by an adult Korean American adoptee, Cynthia Landesberg, centering on the harm that is done by using adoption as a solution to abortion. Please rate us 5 stars and leave us a review! If you want to work with Brianna, she has her own private practice, where she practices from an anti-diet and weight-inclusive lens. Mega-Churches: Conferences, Cults, & Controversy - Part 2 - Ep. 60

TW: religious trauma, church trauma, peer pressured emotional trauma, coercion, manipulation, sexual abuse/assault, abuse of power, purity culture trauma, sexism, cult-like behaviors, miracles + healings traumaHappy New Year all! I hope your 2022 was peaceful and mindful, and if it wasn’t, I hope you are able to find that in 2023. I wanted to welcome you to 2023 with a special 2 part series. I received a lot of feedback recently about deconstruction and religious trauma, and how so many of you wanted to talk about these topics. Specifically, after a megachurch series I posted on my Tik Tok, you all expressed a sincere interest in talking about the coercion and abusive nature of megachurches. So, let’s talk about it. Yesterday I released part 1 of this mini-series, and if you haven’t listened to that episode, it gives some great context for this conversation. We chat about healing culture, the capitalism of Christianity, and the fabrication of supernatural occurrences. In this episode, we dive into the beast that is megachurch & mega-pastor production including tours, conferences, and altar calls. We also go in quite a bit, on the similarities between charismatic Christianity and cults, including some conversation surrounding purity culture and blind obedience. And lastly, we talk about how blind obedience and respect for authority leads to a lack of true accountability and therefore leads to abuse and the misuse of power. We also talk a little bit about how the urge to forgive all and wipe one’s slate white as snow leads to a cycle of abuse. Please rate us 5 stars and leave us a review! Mega-Churches: Healings, Gold Dust, & Gucci - Part 1 - Ep. 59

TW: religious trauma, church trauma, church camp trauma, coercion, manipulation, ableism, classism, racism, colonialism, white savioirism, homophobia, failed resurrection attempt, attempted healing traumaHappy New Year all! In part 1, we chat about healing and the ableist nature of healing/miracle culture, the harm of health + wealth gospel, and why the mega pastor culture is inherently hypocritical and capitalistic. I talk about why at its core I believe megachurches and mega-pastors are unethical in nature. We will also be releasing a special part 2: Megachurches: Conferences, Cults, and Controversy - tomorrow, January 7th at 6AM PST. Please rate us 5 stars and leave us a review!
