Climate reparations with Dr Keston Perry

This week on the show we are joined by Dr Keston Perry. Keston is a lecturer in economics and political economy at University of West of England (UWE). We discuss in practical terms what reparations would mean, the historical racism embedded into Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal and how a Green New Deal must be designed in that context, as well as the reverberations of the Haitian Revolution and how taking a paternalistic approach to defeating climate change won't bring justice to those most effected by it. "We've been running scared for 30 Years" interview with Kevin Anderson

This episode was recorded on March 18th 2021This show is ostensibly about environmental politics. The grinding friction between our natural world and the citizens who have been chosen to act on behalf of society. It is important to remember though, even with all the fantastic powers and creations of humanity, we are beholden to nature and to the physics that govern it.  The planet doesn't care about what colour ribbon you're wearing, it cares about the PPM of CO2 in the air. This week on the show we are joined By Professor Kevin Anderson, Chair of  energy and climate change at the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering (MACE) at the University of Manchester and a researcher for the Tyndall Center. We discuss the hard facts and modelling around climate change,  what a 1.5 and 2 degree world looks like, the failures of the Paris agreement, who holds responsibility for decarbonising  and the timeline of the last 50 years that brought us to this precipice.   Disclaimer: Andrew made a right meal out of some of the audio for this episode.  He's been shot and replaced with a better Andrew with even more luxurious hair, our sincere apologies. White Skin, Black Fuel: On the Dangers of Fossil Fascism

Far right politics invariably comes to the fore in conjunctures of deep crisis.  Since the financial crisis of 2007-8, far right parties and fascistic groups have grown in strength in Europe and across the rest of the world.  Parties ranging from Alternative for Germany (AfD) and Marine Le Pen's National Rally in France, and dictators like Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil demonize immigrants and minorities, pinning the blame of all the nation's ills on those deemed "outsiders".  But what do these far right groups do and say on ecology? How do they interact with a global environmental calamity, and how do we fight back?Acclaimed author Andreas Malm makes his triumphant return to the podcast this week to discuss his new book, White Skin, Black Fuel: On the dangers of Fossil Fascism, co-authored with the Zetkin Collective. We explore the connections between modern fascism and European interwar fascism, the tactics and strategies of these groups, what factors enable them, how we struggle with them and how we win. "Socialism is environmentalism" - An interview with Jeremy Corbyn MP

If you like the show tell your comrades!Find us onTwitter:@MCRGND_PODInsta: ManchestergndpodFB:MCRGNDPODThe political landscape of Britain has changed a lot in the last six years. You could be forgiven in early 2015 if you thought all the major parties were similar except for different coloured ties. With the surprise election of Jeremy Corbyn as Leader of the Labour Party that year, politics shifted up a gear,  the party of the working class digging deep into its socialist roots to make another Britain possible.  His election provided the political space for a eco-socialist vision of Britain. The Labour Party, historically the party of heavy industry, now possesses a grassroots movement striving to make the party climate conscious. How did this come about? And what should the party do to achieve a transition to a post-carbon United Kingdom? This week on the show we are joined by former Leader of the Labour Party and former Leader of the Opposition, Jeremy Corbyn MP.  We discuss enfranchising the Labour movement, supporting workers in carbon intensive industries to transition away from them, and we ask, is Labour still the vehicle for progressive politics in the UK?linksIsabella Trees' Wilding: The Return of Nature to a British Farmhttps://www.waterstones.com/book/wilding/isabella-tree/9781509805105The Peace and Justice Projecthttps://thecorbynproject.com/join-us/Shout Outseveryone who have been campaigning for the Shrewsbury  24 for so long. @Shrewsbury24CNaomi Klein@NaomiAKleinLabour for a Green New Deal@LabGNDManchester Meteor @mcrmeteorSupport the show

"Affecting one part of the Ecosystem ripples across the rest" - The Willow Tit Project

a few audio glitches in this one,  damn you crappy broadband! I want broadband communism now! If you like the show tell your comrades!Find us on Twitter:@MCRGND_PODInsta: ManchestergndpodFB:MCRGNDPODWe spend a lot of time on the podcast looking at the big picture; national carbon budgets, climate politics and so on. Even looking at Greater Manchester as a region sometimes can obscure some of the challenges when it comes to protecting our planet. Climate change isn't just about parts per million in the atmosphere, it's also about protecting and expanding biodiversity to support our ecosystem. Even the smallest thing can change the course of the future. This week we are joined on the show by Jenifer Wood, Laura Nash and Stewart Fraser, organisers from the Willow Tit project based at Carrington Moss in Trafford. We discuss the importance of the scrubland habitats of the willow tit, the delicate balancing act of their ecosystems, the effects of development, and how people can get involved in supporting conservation projects in their own neighbourhoods.   City Nature Challenge - get out there and spot some wildlifehttps://citynaturechallenge.org/Shout outsYouth strike Manchester@YouthstrikemcrGeoff Densham for doing the pioneering work on the willow Tit projectMark Champion - for his expertise and support of the project  To all the Friends groups in ManchesterSupport the show
