What and How to Pack for a Conference | EP 62
Hola from Arizona, Fashion Friends! This week, the Fashion Crimes Podcast is coming to you directly from the 2021 She Podcasts LIVE conference in Scottsdale, where Holly is joining the largest gathering of women podcasters, and will impart her fashion advice as only she can as a featured speaker. Holly is here to help our fashion insider friends face the reality of going back to work and back to conventions and conferences. People are having a hard time getting back to reality, and they have questions: What to pack? How much should I pack? What am I going to do if I can't go back to my room between events? Do I need two outfits a day? Not to fear, our dears! Holly, not only shares what she is packing, but what you should pack for a conference or any long trip for that matter. For example, Holly is in Arizona where it is 90 degrees. She will have parties and events to consider for multiple days. She already knows she will need comfortable shoes because there will be a lot of walking. She has a couple of dinners lined up, so she has planned to be able to go back to her room and change - if she can! You never know how the timing will work out at a conference or event. But she is prepared – and can handle the worst. So, how to prepare for a conference? It can be a downright daunting task. If you throw a bunch of shit in your suitcase at the last minute, you are creating chaos for yourself before you even get there. Holly likes to call that the "Ultimate Recipe for Style Disaster." So what is the Recipe for Style Disaster? Number One: Just go ahead and bring your entire closet with you. #umno The reason we bring this up is - as you will recall from previous podcasts - Holly has been helping her bestie Jessica, prepare for this conference FOR MONTHS. It all started when Holly asked Jessica what she was going to wear to this event, and she said was just going to "bring all of her stuff." #pleasedont SIDE BAR: You might as well go just ahead and pack all the stress right there in your suitcase. A minor freak-out session is guaranteed each morning because there are going to be way too many choices for you. FYI, stress is the least attractive accessory for your outfit. That is a truth bomb. Continuing on with the recipe, go ahead and add one dash of panic once you finally pick something out, because by now you are running late, and you will be second-guessing your outfit choice of the day while trying to network and schmooze with others. That is a distraction with a Capital D. There is nothing that is more of an energy killer than feeling unsure about what you're wearing. Your energy is going to reflect that when meeting people. Next, stir in one cup of chaos when you look like you have been run over by a truck by the end of that day, and you still need to meet colleagues for drinks. Or, add a little extra flavor when the person you have to meet is a potential client or new customer. Did you prepare for that? Are you a mess by now? Well, you are for sure wiped out, and it is only Day One. If you're interested in the recipe for style success, please look no further. It does not take a brain surgeon or rocket scientist to figure this out. It just takes a little bit of concentration and time on your end. So here it is: The Recipe for Style Success – a style calendar. These days, you download a conference app before even going. So you can pick out which events you are going to attend ahead of time, find the people you want to try to connect with, and see what each day will look like. It is super easy to add outfits to your calendar and organize your looks. Done! #duh! However, this recipe needs certain ingredients, so think about these key things: Are you flying or driving? You should plan to be comfortable, but you cannot look like you just rolled out of bed #ICANTEVEN What undergarments do you need for each outfit? Get a damn bra that fits. Do you need a strapless bra? What about shaping items? Do you need a black bra for your favorite black sheer top? You can't go anywhere without the right foundations. Plan your accessories for every single outfit: do you need socks or tights? Do you have the right shoes for each day? What about statement pieces like jewelry and scarves? PLAN. IT. OUT. PRO TIP: "getting dressed" does not mean "getting dressed up." Pull yourself together for each day, because you are making a first impression 100 times a day. Think about that. Take control of your style. Style and fashion should take 10% of your brain space. If you are organized, then you will be able to pick out an outfit in five minutes. It should take you one hour to get dressed: shower, hair, makeup, whatever your ritual is, and then five minutes to get dressed, especially if you're on a trip. So what did we learn today? If you haven't already picked out what you're going to wear, and you are hemming and hawing in your closet for 35 minutes, then you will be running late and stressed out. Packing for your conference should be easy to manage when you have your style calendar planned. It's not an easy task, people. But, that's what Holly is here for! DM us on social. Email us. Pari Passu Plus Size Designer Shanna Goldstone |EP 61
LISTEN AND LEARN, People: This week on The Fashion Crimes Podcast, Holly talks real fashion news, for real women, who have real bodies. Fashion Friends, meet Shanna Goldstone. She is the founder of Pari Passu, a STUNNING contemporary fashion line that is breaking the mold – literally – in the plus-size fashion world. In fact, she has smashed all of the current molds - and built 3 of her own damn real-world versions - because "One size style does not fit all." Follow along as Shanna tells Holly about her fashion journey from consulting with retail companies to helping actress Melissa McCarthy launch her clothing line Seven7. Shanna hadn't even worked in the plus-size fashion space before, but, being the market researcher that she is, she dug in deep. And what she found was incredibly disturbing, and yet something all women already know: most women of the world are not the size or shape that fashion designers and stores create and sell. Sorry, this is not okay. In fact, like many of us, Shanna assumed that she would be able to research plus-size fashions for Melissa's new line by simply going to all the normal retailers - from Walmart and Target, to Lane Bryant, and Neimans and Saks. And guess what she found? NOTHING. It didn't matter how high or low the price point was, if she wanted to see a size 14 or above, it was either hidden in the back or they didn't have it. It was unbelievable that clothing wasn't readily available for sizes 0 to 30 and beyond. Question? Just how in the world are 68% of the American female population - who are a size 14 and above - actually supposed to purchase clothing, let alone find stylish fashions? Boy, do we get hot under the collar for a minute or two about that statistic! (Holly is embroidering that stat onto a pillow as we speak.) But wait! It gets better! Or worse. Shanna had a second big 'A-HA' moment when she started looking at how clothing is actually made. She is not a designer by trade, but did go to F.I.T. where she studied fashion marketing. While sitting in meetings with Melissa's designers for the new plus-size line, she realized they were utilizing forms that were design size – a size 8! #RUDE #SERIOUSLY Yes, Ma'am. She said that. Design meetings for a new plus-size line built on size 8 forms. Just so 'ya know, a size 8 mannequin or dressmaker form doesn't represent a real person with real curves. It looks nothing like your body, it doesn't even look like a human woman. It's basically a slightly hourglass form, with little boobs and no tush. So how are you gonna get curvy out of that? And thus, the epiphany: Tons of lines are made like this. So, Shanna set out trying to figure out why you wouldn't just use a dressmaker form that looks like the size of the customer you're designing for? Again, #duh! Fast forward: her market research brain led her to some proprietary data from a study of 3D scans of over 100,000 people for other industries. For instance, airlines need to know how big – or small! – to make airline seats. Shanna purchased a slice of this data, analyzing it to match the demographic criteria for plus-size women. Using those measurements, she then built not one, but THREE different dressmakers forms in three different shapes. Because again, one SHAPE does not fit all. And then Pari Passu was born. Beautifully designed contemporary clothing created to fit the shape of a woman, not the size. But let's get back to Holly. (Finally!) Because the universe is an amazing thing. Holly was looking for stylish plus-size fashions for one of her clients, she found Shanna through a friend - and GUESS WHAT?? If you are a fan of this show – and who isn't – you know that Holly went to summer camp with our friend of the podcast Jessica Kupferman – and OMG - Shanna went there, too!! #bestdayever So, of course Shanna is brilliant and talented and amazing, and now our new BFF. We gush over her designs, and Holly tells us how she bought a shit-ton of items for her client (which you can see on our Pinterest Board). Holly also shares a gob of unsolicited design ideas for Pari Parru, because, Holly. notsurprised Anyway, you gotta listen to this episode whether you are plus size or not. It's for all women who have had a hard time finding clothes that fit. Pari Passu is an amazing brand that supports women who want the same choices as straight size women. #hellsyes The Fashion Crimes Podcast www.fashioncrimespodcast.com Holly Katz Styling www.hollykatzstyling.com

Closet Clean Out v. 2.0 | EP 60
Hey, Hey, Hey, Fashion Friends!! This week, Holly answers more of your burning fashion questions. Get your ears ready, because we are here to share some hard truth, friends! Have you ever thought: "I'm afraid of a closet clean-out! Should I be?" OR "If you come over to my house, are you gonna throw all my favorite $#*t out?? Because I am emotionally attached to these tiny Tabasco bottle earrings that belonged to my dead 3rd cousin, and I really need to hold on to them." OYE. Well, if you must keep your damn Tabasco bottle earrings, then this show ain't for you, honey! Because clothes (and accessories) are energy, and you need to decide how much negative crap you need to have hanging around, or hanging off your ear lobes. Did you know that there are 3 types of closet clean-outs? 1. The Over-Shopper: In this closet, there are things with the tags still on them, a ton of things with the tags on it. It's overflowing, shit's everywhere, it's super messy, unorganized, you don't know where anything is, you don't know what fits, you don't know what sizes you have, or you have a huge size range. You are a HOT MESS. 2. The Streamliner: This streamlining person thinks they're so on top of it, because they own very little or nothing. How people can go through life with a job, and only have six pair of pants, four shirts, and three pair of shoes? They have to emotionally shut down because they have no idea what to buy. They are a HOT OVERWHELMED MESS. 3. The last kind of closet clean out is the person who is absolutely in denial. It can be a queen of denial, it can be a king of denial. This person is absolutely stuck in a style rut, they have a financial block, and they're not willing to part with things or change or evolve. This can happen at any age, any gender, at any economic bracket. And this is where I get a lot of tears. You are just stuck in a DAMN MESS. Holly takes you through some tough decisions with some tough love, because clutter makes your life miserable. So RIP OFF THE BANDAID! KISS THAT FROG! Throw out your dead relatives' T-Shirt collection. Because that shit is just bringing you down. Don't hold onto the bad Juu-Juu of an ex-boyfriend's sweater. And we are sorry to break it to you, but you will NEVER be the size you were in high school. I mean, it's the circle of life. Also, you are never gonna sell your old stuff. It's too much work and, repeat after Holly: No One Wants Your Old, Outdated Shit. JUST STOP. And stop accepting things from others because you are afraid you will hurt their feelings. It's bad energy. So, how do you get started with an overwhelming clean out project? Honestly, the first step is awareness. If you know you need a closet clean out and you don't know where to start, the first thing you can do is start by changing all the #hangers. Holly is a huge advocate for Velvet Slimline hangers - no wire hangers, no plastic tube hangers, no wooden hangers, especially wooden hangers. The Velvet Slimline hangers save you the most room, and they keep your clothes hanging the way they should be hanging. For the love of God! They should be paying Holly. So, what did we learn today??? If you are ready for a closet clean out, you can do it yourself, or you can call on a professional like Holly Katz Styling! #DUH! Understand that is the first step to getting your sanity back, and getting your style back. Clean Out! Peace Out! Until next time on the FASHION CRIMES PODCAST! #FashionCrimesPodcast #FashionStyle #hollykatzstyling #stylebynolan #personalstylist #fashionpodcast #fashioncrimes #podcastersofinstagram #podcast #nowirehangers #closetorganization #closetcleanout #closet #declutter #organization

2021 Met Gala Review | EP 59
HOOOWDDYYY fashion insider friends! So - if our #NYFW Episode last week was not enough fashion for you - get yourself ready for the Fashion Crimes Podcast 2021 #MetGala Review! This week, Holly and Nolan have QUITE a bit to say about "Fashion's Biggest Night Out." Every year, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC hosts a themed fundraising gala. This year's theme was "In America: A Lexicon of Fashion" – whatever that means. Apparently, we aren't the only ones wondering WTH, as it seems like most whom arrived on the famous white Met staircase had no idea either - or at least - didn't bother to help us minions to understand their choice of outfit. RUDE! Excuse me....we need to know these things. So, instead, Holly and Nolan pick their Favs and Flops, adding plenty of insightful details and sidebar commentary. Lots of sidebar commentary. Duh. Holly loves J Lo in full her Ralph Lauren western, and Winnie Harlow and Gabrielle Union, both in Iris Van Herpen. Nolan drools over Shawn Mendez (with no shirt, again!). Would not kick him out of bed for eating crackers. I meaann. Let's be honest. But of course, Nolan does not mince words regarding Kristen Stewart in Chanel, Kendall Jenner in Givenchy (although he begrudgingly agrees that she did look the best she has ever looked at this Gala), and poor AOC with her "Tax the Rich" gown designed by Brother Vellies. Next time, AOC, ask Nolan first. I mean, right?!?! Oh! And Madonna's daughter Lourdes was dressed as a belly dancer – hairy arm pits and all! EW! I mean is that really necessary. And, we're sorry, but WTAF with Frank Ocean and his Prada x Homer green baby, Kim K. in her blackout bat suit and Justin Bieber in La Maison Drew? We are sure there are stories behind some of the weirder style choices, but frankly, we aren't sure we care. We do care, however, that this is basically the BEST TIME OF THE FASHION YEAR DOT COM, and love, love, love how much of a fashion feast we have had for the past 2 weeks. There were beauties, there were beasts, and then there was Nolan at a swanky, VVIP Met Gala after-party! He got all glammed up and enjoyed rubbing elbows with celebs, models and fashion editors - and partaking in lots and lots of sponsored spirits. All Holly cares about is the swag bag, and what she will be able to convince Nolan to part with. #truth It's been a long two weeks of fashion reporting, and frankly, our asses are fried. But hey, someone's gotta give their unwanted opinions. It might as well be us! OMG you're welcome. We are the two best fashion friends you never knew you needed. Reporting live from the 2021 Met Gala, I mean how lucky are you right now. #justsayin LINKS DISCUSSED: Met Gala Red Carpet Looks: https://www.vogue.com/slideshow/met-gala-2021-red-carpet-live-celebrity-fashion #MetInAmerica #AmericanDesigners #hollykatzstyling #stylebynolan #personalstylist #fashionpodcast #fashioncrimes #whoworeitbest #whoworewhat #whoworeitworst #metmuseum #celebritystyle #celebrityfashion #celebritydress #eveningdress #eveninggowns #hautecouture #exclusivedesign #iheartradio #spotify #applepodcasts #podcastersofinstagram #podcast

NYFW Wrap Party with Holly and Nolan | EP 58
Straight from New York Fashion Week: There is no intro that will do this episode justice: THIS. IS. EPIC. In case you have been living under a rock, Holly and Nolan attended #NYFW last week, and managed to see just about every angle of it - from top designer shows to after parties to the #VMAs and even a #MetGala after party!!! Their asses were dragged all over town - from all the #COVID tests they had to take to all the amazing shows they got into! Here is the list of designer shows attended – and this week, we spend ENDLESS time discussing IN DETAIL, because they were so freaking fabulous: #KateSpade (presentation) #Patbo #OscardelaRenta (presentation) #CynthiaRowley #ProenzaSchouler #Monse #Bulgari #FrederickAnderson #DennisBasso #Naeem Khan #NY Mens Day featuring: Fried Rice The Stolen Garment A. Potts Collection Carter Young It was so amazing to see all of this City back online again... All of the designers, fashion editors, famous people, models, DJs, music artists, influencers, new designers, new brands, old friends and literally all of New York City. (One of Holly's favs was Botox the Dog, look it up!) All was going along swimmingly, until Nolan crossed his legs and audibly SPLIT THE ASS OF HIS PANTS OUT at the Frederick Anderson show. #CandaceBushnell was there, as well as some of the #Hermès heirs, and a sprinkling of fancy schmancy NYC socialites - all whom heard the whole deal. But not to be defeated, afterward, our Nolie then walked down Park Ave with his neon boxers hanging out, because he is NOT going to miss an after party. "It was funny, but it also sucked." – Nolan Learn about all of the outrageous venues the designers chose to present this year: from a skate park in the rain at Chelsea Piers, to the #MeatpackingDistrict and #BatteryPark to #LittleIsland on the Hudson River, and even #RockefellerCenter – all gorgeous and fun settings that added spectacular layers to the art and fashion of the week. We do have to take a moment to discuss Holly's PRIMA DONNA COMPLEX during the week. At the Monse show, she flat-out refused to give up her front row seat when some "manager" asked her (DUH). But some poor saps did get moved, and then #ParisHilton and #NikkiHilton sat down from her...like 3 seats down. Paris - with her GARGANTUAN diamond engagement ring. Really, it was completely blinding. Holly is still talking about it. Holly also lost her composure – but only for a second – while standing in line for a show (AFTER ON-DEMAND COVID TESTING, and registration, etc.) - and was cut off just as it was their turn. But, with one little Karen-esque scene, they all ended up with tickets to the VMAs, so you are welcome. I mean, it really was her best work. Did we mention yet (only 3 times) that Holly and Nolan ended up at the #VMAs? It was BE-YOND, and then Nolan dumped his friends and got to go backstage and found better seats without the rest of the crew. Not that we are mad or anything. We were just 80% happy for him. #BustaRhymes and #DojaCat ended up being favs of the night. Be sure to check out Holly and Nolan's "David and Moira" moment. For the VMAs, Nolan says he 'looked like a pimp' and Holly had a fashion identity crisis, which in the end, ending up being one of their better fashion moments after all. But there was some painful banter getting there. OK, that's a wrap. As Holly says: "We had a great time, we met some new people. We reconnected with old folks that we knew. We have some new fans of the podcast. We have some newer friendships. So, it was great!" Fine Jewelry Do's and Don'ts | EP 56
Live from Las Vegas! Our bestie, Nolan Meader who is sooo busy these days, penciled us in this week to catch us up on his fab new career and give us some tips on wearing fine jewelry. Nolan has been a very busy MAN ABOUT TOWN, but he stops in for a hot minute to update us on his recent influencer events in the Hamptons - and then his very important trip to VEGAS, BABY! for the national jewelry shows. But first, we discuss his favorite store – AGAIN – which is Frame, who just happens to have released a line for the NY Carlyle Hotel, also his favorite. How much can you spend on a sweatshirt? – I mean, apparently a lot. But Carlyle Hotel merch is 5-star hotel merch. Not your average douche-y beach resort swag – and believe him, there is a difference! As he is always on the hunt for FABULOUS items for Holly, he found a hot pink Valentino dress one day while shopping with Schmutz (our Doodle Mascot) who proceeds to dump our hosts for the table next to them....obvi they had better petting skills. #rude. Be sure to check our social posts for photos! Next is the Hamptons fashion PR party report– with a ridiculous pre-party sidebar where Nolan got his party outfit swamped at the beach PRIOR to party time while shooting IG content, and possibly after some adult drinks. The next weekend he was back to attend a party for Betsey Johnson Jewelry – where he had the BEST.DAY.EVER.DOT.COM - and then Julia Haart from "My Unorthodox Life" showed up. So chic!!! Holly was, like, 80% happy for him. And FINALLY – we get the skinny on the Las Vegas Couture and Antique Jewelry Show. From jewelry that will be sold to Nordstrom to the most classic, vintage Henry Winston jewels: It. Was. Next. Level. He reports the hottest trends are in jewelry right now, and that expensive fine jewelry is outrageously popular right now. What should you buy if you are looking for some nice jewelry? He has a very specific point of view on this: what to buy, how to buy. We were up for some much-needed joy this week, as well as some jewelry tips - and we loved hearing him spill the tea from the jewelry shows! We are so lucky to be able to get some hot tips: Do your research and invest in pieces that will make you happy! What are the latest trends in jewelry? Which watches are people wearing these days? Can you mix costume jewelry with real jewels? Can you mix metals? Don't shun vintage and secondhand jewelry stores, especially if you want to spend a lot of money on something. Look there first before you go to a chain. Closet Clean-Out of Jessica Kupferman: CEO, She Podcasts | EP 55
This week, our Stylist Extraordinaire Holly Katz has been doing the LORD'S WORK, People! She is with her BFF, Jessica Kupferman, CEO of She Podcasts, cleaning out her closet, swearing up a storm and getting Jessica styled for a big-ass upcoming event: She Podcast LIVE in October - the largest in-person gathering of women podcasters, audio content creators and storytellers. . Hold on to your underwear – because this episode is OUT OF CONTROL! Holly and Jess reminisce about being besties since their days at summer camp (Jew Camp, as Jessica likes to call it). She is a dear friend and a past guest and friend of our Podcast, and Holly has been threatening to go to her house and clean out her closet FOR YEARS. . And, hot damn, if Holly did not do just that for 72 hours. She is here today to report that 23 bags full of shit are now gone. In her defense, Jess's husband and mother-in-law jumped on the clean-out train, so they added to those piles. But Holly is so proud of them - they were all drinking the Kool-Aid - and there wasn't even any crying! . Jessica asks a shit-ton of great questions about how to avoid the dreaded Crimes of Fashion, and Holly shares some of her deepest, darkest secrets on how proper styling, fit, and selection can make a world of difference in your confidence – AND – she tells us how to make style decisions easy - and perfect - just for you, every day. . Should Jessica keep her Chicken Purse? It was a hard decision, because it was next to a pile of scarves, next to a huge, pink bin full of purses, which Holly threw out because they were little sequin, tchotchke, furry, weirdly handled cigar box purses. How about the hospital plastic take-home bag full of unmatched socks (that have been sitting in Jess's closest for FIVE YEARS)? Perhaps her T-shirt collection should be divided into SLEEPING SHIRTS and GOING OUTSIDE SHIRTS? Because she wears them for both. How many body types are there? Three? Six? A Million? And which one do we want? What is a bra fitting? Who needs one (Jess knows her own damn boobs, thank you)? Why do we need them? When and where do we get them? WTF? And then, in the middle of this shit show, Holly finds a legit fab designer for Jessica who – GET THIS – went to their Jew Summer Camp! OMFG. We. Can. Not. At one point, Jessica's husband gets involved, because he has OCD, and cleaning up shit turns him on. So, he started getting hot under the unders, and … bleep, bleep, censored, censored. Jessica has a load of wigs in her closet to deal with. She had a Mohawk once that she needed to fix, yada, yada. Try to keep up, it's ridiculous. And, Accessories! Neck fans purchased on Facebook because you are menopausal are not accessories. Stylish glasses that fit your face and classic costume jewelry mixed with your fine pieces are your jam! . Holly literally clears the crap, opens up Jessica's space for positive energy, and leaves her with all the confidence in the world before she stands on stage to welcomes the podcast world to She Podcast LIVE in Scottsdale, AZ in Oct. . She is gonna rock it! ' So, what's in YOUR closet? Are you ready for a fresh start? ' LINKS DISCUSSED: She Podcasts: https://www.shepodcasts.com She Podcast Event: https://www.shepodcasts.com/live/ QUOTES: "I woke up this morning, I brushed my teeth, I went into my closet. And I picked out a comfortable, stylish outfit in under 30 seconds - and in fact - I had several to choose from. The miracle of that is that none of those outfits are pajamas." - Jessica Kupferman . "And I'll say it again, not every day is going to be a home run. But why not set yourself up for success? Jessica has this big event coming up, which I have dressed her for. She's got plenty of things to wear, and she has realized that she has over-shopped. Not a big deal. We know that now. So we got rid of the worst, and we're keeping the best of the best." - Holly Katz

Style Inspiration for New Moms w/Ali Levine: Celebrity Stylist | EP 54
Pay attention people, because Celebrity Stylist TV Personality, Influencer, Podcaster, Blogger, Mother ALI LEVINE is here with us! Major BFD alert! Ali is a VIP stylist from the West Coast and is now a new transplant to Tennessee. Before that, she was raised in the high-velocity fashion culture of New York. She is a celebrity stylist, a motherhood fashion lifestyle expert, and so much more! Ali has styled for many different magazines and has had a million celebrity opportunities working with all sorts of high-profile people. She has worked in television, film and music, and has been called LA's "It" Girl as far as celebrity styling is concerned. She's got a star-studded portfolio: working with Jesse McCartney, Holly Robinson Pete, Joey King, Gretchen Rossi, Lisa Vanderpump, and so many more. Ali is the REAL DEAL!!! We talk about her start in the fashion industry and ultimately conquering the world of styling. From New York to LA and back again, she has seen it all. And then, in the middle of it, she also had TWO adorable babies. Holly and Ali chat about their shared styling history with the School of Style, their mentors Luke Storey and Lauren Messiah, and how FREAKING HARD starting out in a new industry can be. You gotta put in the work, you gotta do the grunt work. Fashion and styling jobs are not glamorous! When you see that picture-perfect outfit on the red carpet, just know that moment is only 1% of work. Ali says that styling is "90% Grime and 10% Glam." Holly says, "PREACH, Queen!!!" Ali is passionate about styling and the confidence gained from looking your best. This was never more apparent to her than during and after her two pregnancies. Changing body parts, postpartum depression, spitting babies and the havoc of hormones had her beating herself up and expecting too much to soon. Society expects women to 'bounce back!' when you can never go back, because you started a whole new chapter! Holly delves in with some burning questions, like: To keep or not to keep your maternity clothes? And/or your pre-baby jeans? What are some mistakes that people can make after pregnancy? As far as fashion and style are concerned? Both Holly and Ali agree that there ain't nobody who needs any kind of negative energy, so give yourself a freaking break!!! If it's just going to sit and collect dust, it's not going to serve you in the near future. Let it go! Because, if anything, that energy will just hold you back. It's making you think of something that maybe doesn't exist anymore, and maybe it never will again. And there's no reason to hold on to it. IN THIS EPISODE: [2:09] HOLLY: So Ali and I have so much in common. We both did some of the same styling courses. Ali, tell us about that. [2:48] ALI: I'm originally from New York, I moved to Los Angeles for over a decade and then recently moved to Tennessee. And when I first moved to California, I was working in costume and costume design. Long story short, I had worked in New York, after doing corporate fashion and retail and product development and design, all these different you know, projects. I ended up then falling in love with the entertainment industry side and working in costume. [2:58] ALI: I went to Los Angeles, started working in the movie and entertainment industry, and got into the union and really realized that, for me, it was not fueling my passion, even though I was becoming very successful very quickly. I wasn't necessarily feeling the feeling of the passion in my soul of what I had started feeling when I first worked in fashion. And so that's what then led me to start to figure out well, what else could I be doing now that I've made this move? [5:40] ALI: I got to take a business class (at the School of Style), and that was really the start to my styling career. I really learned the business side of styling and what that looks like. And I started working with Luke (Storey), but as we're getting all these amazing opportunities and mentors, you know, mentors from him and others, working with tons of other stylists as an intern again, of course not getting paid, but just getting the experience getting paid experience. [6:40] HOLLY: That is a great story. So Luke Storey and Lauren Messiah were co owners of the School of Style. I was a graduate in 2015. And I actually still work with Lauren today. She is an executive coach for me and a group of other people. I have taken every single class that they have offered. And I love the program. And I fell in love with them because they were really real. [7:30] ALI: The classes want you to understand the realness of it, the dirt, the grime. And it's not the glam thing, but it's 90% you know, grind and 10% glam. And I think that was really important for me to learn at it, you know, really early. [10:00] HOLLY: What are some mistakes that people can make after pregnancy? As far as fashion and style are concerned? [12:00] ALI: When I first became a mom, first off, I had in my mind that I was going to go through this massive bounce back. So, I was playing around Hollywood all the time, right? Red carpets and around celebrities. And I'm like, Oh, I'm just gonna bounce back, you know, push the baby out, go to bed later and just bounce back just like the rest of them! And it's like, yeah, okay, for most people, that's not the case. [13:30] ALI: I used to just stand there and just beat myself up. And I know so many women do it. It's so it's so easy to do. Because you look at yourself, and you feel like, Wow! I just I lost the woman I was, or, I'm no longer pretty, no longer sexy. What's going on with me? [16:30] ALI: I really think I made it worse for myself, because I told myself I was going to fit into those jeans again. So I'm going to leave them there. I'm going to definitely wear that shirt again, I just may not wear it for another few months. For me it was just like this dead energy, just stagnant sitting in my closet that was creating a negative vibes, just sitting there because nothing's happening to it. [21:17] HOLLY: And the postpartum just doesn't magically go away. I mean, you don't wake up one day and be like, I'm totally fine! Take small bites. Maybe you find a sweater you really like, and you wear that for a week. If you love it and you feel good in it. Great! [26:00] ALI: Like, it's been a busy day. And I am grateful to be so busy, don't get me wrong, but like today is a heavy day. So guess what, tomorrow, this weekend, I will honor myself and I will give myself some rest and I will do some pampering. [29:00] HOLLY: It is a big deal because you're constantly putting yourself on the back burner. Because it's too hard. You've got young kids. You take five minutes, you take five hours, I don't care, but you've got to make yourself a priority. Whatever your jam is, do your makeup do your hair, you don't do everything, but you can do one thing for yourself. [33:00] HOLLY: How long do you keep your maternity clothes? Do you feel like keeping them holds you back? [34:30] ALI: Whether it's pregnancy, postpartum, a new job, getting married, whatever it is, whatever life change, we all go through changes, hopefully. If you're not, in my opinion, if you're not changing and evolving, you're dying. So, if you're evolving, and you're shifting, and you're going through these things, you're going to have those moments where things just aren't going to resonate anymore. So donate, sell or trade what doesn't work anymore. KEY TAKEAWAYS: Starting a new career in fashion, and especially styling, is hard work. It's not as glamorous as it's cracked up to be. Ali says it's "90% grime and 10% glam" – and now Holly wants the T-Shirt!! Women need to give themselves a little bit of grace, for the love of God! Society's expectation to 'bounce back' or to 'get back in the game' in a physical, emotional, professional and social way after a pregnancy is ridiculous. Don't disappoint and depress yourself by setting yourself up with the wrong expectations. Life will be different, you will be different, your body will be different and that is OK. Prepare for the new you after your delivery! Before the baby is born, find clothes that will work with your new lifestyle. That doesn't mean you have to forgo fashion, but you do need to find styles that are comfortable, that don't cling too much in the wrong places, or make you uncomfortable. This is a temporary phase, a temporary wardrobe, and planning for it will help you embrace this new chapter of motherhood! Style Ideas for New Moms: A maxi dress A new pair of jeans with a little bit stretch A t-shirt that's cute, but it's still casual and fitted A sweater that's cute and pretty on, but easy to open up to breastfeed Try a new eye mask at night, or put on your mascara, just a little self-care to boost your confidence. And Holly's fav? Find yourself some really, really, REALLY nice pajamas. They can be incredibly indulgent! Find those hero pieces and build a little capsule collection that's yours just to go to for that time that you need to. It's important because then your confidence comes back, and you start to realize, like, okay, you CAN get dressed! LINKS DISCUSSED: Ali Levine: www.alilevine.com (Want to be styled by Ali? Get new clothing, invest in yourself, Girl! Make yourself feel good in this new mom body, embrace it, enjoy it, it's a new chapter and you need to get the right new clothes! Give yourself a little grace." – Ali Levine "I was judging myself, because I'm like, oh, you're freaking somebody stylist, when you can't get dressed in the morning? But that was my story. I would step into my closet, and I would just immediately feel this overwhelming panic, depression, anxiety and would be like, never mind, I'm just gonna stay in my robe, in my underwear and call it a fucking day." – Ali Levine "That word Grace is just so beautiful, because everyone is on a different path. And you might not snap back. And that is OK." – Holly Katz

Holly's Solo Mini Series: OG Styling Tips & Podcast Movement '21 Recap | EP 53
Hey, hey, hey, it's a Holly Solo Mini Series as she joins us this week with a Nashville Trip Wrap Par-tay! Did you know she went to Nashville last week to mix and mingle with Podcast People? Did you miss our last episode? WTF, people? The last two weeks have been very important: We shared important intel on "What to Pack" for important trips, business adventures or vacations, "How to Pack," "What Not to Pack"… it's been A LOT. Anyyyyyway: Holly packed her suitcase, full of Styles by Nolan, and she was totally ready to KICK ASS in Nashville at the recent Podcast Movement Convention. She needed to have her stylish self ready for long-ass presentations, photo ops, AND, a dance party with Quest Love as the DJ, y'all! Because of all the stuff we told you in the LAST EPISODE, you should know by now that you can't just pack everything in your closet for a trip. READ THE ROOM, People! This week, Holly is so happy to report that 1.) She did not overpack 2.) Her carefully planned outfits worked out perfectly, so she was confident at each and every event and 3.) Her new YSL shoes ripped her feet a new one with raging blisters. BUT, she did look AMAZEBALLS in her Saint Laurents. #duh Holly's first adventure into Podcast Convention Adventureland was steeped in uncertainty and anticipation. But, her actual experience turned out to be the BEST DAY EVER DOT COM! Holly tells us that met a SHIT TON of new besties. Podcast People are not basement trolls and are some of THE NICEST PEOPLE she has ever met. Being a podcaster is hard work, and so it was really great to compare notes and share sob stories with some of the best in the business. The best part? Holly reports that her outfits were a smashing success. We know that you were super worried! She felt great, she felt like she looked great, and she got a lot of compliments because she felt confident in clothes that fit her well and reflected her personality. So there you go. So let's go over that, again: She felt great in what she was wearing, because why? Because the clothes that she had fit her really well and reflected her personality. Did you take notes yet? We've only said it 345 times now. We learn about a TON of outrageous and fun new podcasts you need to follow – all run by fucking spectacular women. We also hear about Mark Cuban's appearance at the conference, where he wore freaking dad jeans and an Under Armor t-shirt. NOT. OK. Being a billionaire does not mean you can go out in your workout clothes. IMJUSSAYIN' Join us as Holly explains which of her outfits worked best and why. And, that because her new effing shoes hurt her feet so much, she was not able to over-sweat and ruin her Alexander McQueen dress. Details, people! Details make the diff!! And if you travel, you know what happens at airports: FASHION CRIMES!!! Holly cannot contain herself on this one, so be sure to check out social media this week to see the heinous crimes committed at the Nashville airport. We. Have. Photos. In other news, we have so much coming up in the next few weeks, you really need to subscribe and start planning your days around our podcast. Holly will be hanging out with her BFF Jessica Kupferman, the CEO of SHE Podcasts. Jessica is hosting a Huge Ass Live Conference in Scottsdale, AZ in October, so Holly and Jessica will be broadcasting live as they get her ready for her appearances. They will be taking smack, talking podcasting, talking fashion and cleaning out Jessica's closet in preparation of the October event. And speaking of that, Holly takes some time out to say: ASK HOLLY! ASK NOLAN! What are your wardrobe dilemmas? What do you need help with? Did you see Fashion Crimes you need to report this week? We want to hear from you! The Fashion Crimes Podcast is here to help you be the best you can be. Let us teach you how to be more confident, how to feel better and how to be better. And, hey! If you need a husband, Holly has news on that front, too. (OMG) In This Episode: [00:54] "So I really enjoyed it. I mean, in all honesty, now, I will tell you that I was warned that podcasters and podcast people in this particular industry can be referred to as like, basement trolls. I mean, as far as their wardrobes are concerned. But I beg to differ. It was really cool... people were super, super friendly, creating new relationships and networking. I mean, I had an amazing time. I mean, A-May-Zing." [1:05] "I felt great, I felt like I looked great, I got a lot of compliments, because I felt confident in the clothes that I had really fit me well and reflected my personality. So there you go. So let's go over that, again, I felt great, and what I was wearing, because why? Because the clothes that I had fit me really well and reflected my personality." [1:20] "I have a lot of new work coming up: all very different people, with the exact same problem: fashion and style is hard for them. It's too much work, and they don't know where to start. So they call me Yay! Really good on them! I mean, honestly, it takes a lot of guts to admit that you need help with something that you're not familiar with. And, then you reach out to the experts. In this case- that would be me!" [1:35] "And for that convention, we're going to be broadcasting live and recording, because I'm going to her house next week. We are going to be taking pictures we're going to be doing videos, we're going to be cleaning out her closet. So stay tuned for that, because this is going to be an episode that you do not want to miss. Jessica is fun, funny and a hot mess all rolled up into one. But don't worry, Boo! The Holly Train is about to roll in on that one. It's going to be amazing. I'm going to be ripping her new one, pumping her up, building her up. Jessica has got great style. She just needs a little help. It's all good." [1:50] "I do want to say another reason why my outfits were so successful at the convention is because I did not overpack. I was not confused with a lot of choices because I already decided what I was going to wear each day and night. So I did not have a choice to like screw that up. I had to go with what I packed. And the most major packing mistake that most people make is just packing too much." [2:10] "I mean, for example, my new besties, Erica and Jamila from the podcast "Good Moms, Bad Choices." I am not afraid to admit I am totally in love with them. They have a cannabis and sexuality podcast where they talk about all things that they need to make them better moms, like sex and pot. I love them and I went to their breakout session. I mean, I literally stopped them in their tracks and talked to them about their clothes because they looked so great. And of course they're from LA. So, they were super fashionable. We hit it off immediately. Love Them!" [2:40] "I'm going to conclude with the fashion crimes that I did indeed see, which I would like to report were not from the convention. But, they were people that I saw at the airport, the Nashville airport. And don't worry, I have pictures of all these people." [3:05] "My friend and I have always talked about fashion and fashion crimes. We always say look, if your house is on fire, what is your go-to? What is the outfit you're going to put on to run out of the house? Is it pajamas pants? No, it's not. I'm probably gonna throw on some jeans and a T shirt. And a bra maybe, it probably depends on how much the house is really on fire, grab some tennis shoes and run. I'm not going to grab my pajama pants." [4:05] "I mean, she worked hard on this and everything did go together. But it was just a little fucking wackadoodle for the Nashville TSA line. But that was just my only complaint about her. I couldn't decide if I loved her or if I hated her, but I just thought she was unusual. And I did appreciate her being eccentric. I did get that, but we could have worked that outfit out a little bit better. But you know, again, I noticed her and she was definitely podcast worthy." [6:00] "But you know, those are the fashion crimes that I did see. And you know, it was a little scary. I'm not going to lie, but I lived. I worked it out. I loved it and I always enjoy. My favorite thing to do is to sit in the airport and people watch because people are dressed so terribly or they look great, or they look completely normal and fine. But what I've always wanted to do since I started my styling business, I've always wanted to set up an airport booth, like one of those kiosks next to the information booth, and give out free fashion advice because, dammit, people need that, especially in the airport." [8:30] "Let's reconvene next week while I will be at the podcast in the Queens home of Miss Jessica Kupferman, going through her shit, throwing it away, keeping the best of the best, making her look like a frickin' supermodel and I'm uncovering the beauty queen that she is, while really ripping her a new one, 'cuz it's all right. We've all been there, and we're going go shopping. We're going to be throwing out her clothes, we'll be keeping her clothes, we'll be donating some of her stuff. It's going to be great." [9:45] "I'm doing good things in the world people. And I just wanted to leave by saying I want to know what you guys want to hear. Send me a message on my Instagram account, or you can put it on Fashion Crimes Podcast social, whichever you want. My personal styling account is Holly Katz Styling. Tell me what you want to hear. What do you want to hear? Do you want to hear more interviews from designers? Do you want to hear about local designers? Tell me where you live. I will look up local designers in your area so we can interview some people." [11:00] "I want to inspire you about fashion and style. Let me be your fashion Yoda. You know, I have been called the Dating Yoda, too. And I will say this, I have created a marriage. I create marriages. Did you know that? Did you know that through fashion and style, if you're single, you never know who you're going to meet, you might meet your husband. You don't know!" . Key Takeaways: Planning and packing can take all the stress out of traveling and ensure you will look your best at any event. Holly met her podcast people at the Podcast Movement conference in Nashville. She was dressed for success and tells you how you can be, too! We are here to make you the most stylish you possible! Send us your wardrobe, style and fashion questions. We also want to see what sort of Fashion Crimes you encounter along the way. Share, Subscribe, Send Smoke Signals. Don't miss this week's episode! I decided that, "You know what? I'm going to be an adult. And I'm not going to spill shit all over my white dress." So there you go. – Holly at the dance party with Quest Love wearing Alexander McQueen.
