Episode 85: The Story of Playfair Capital 🟢

We're obviously still in the midst of COVID-19 and if you're anything like us at HS., you'll be locked away, thinking, strategising, and coming up with new ideas, new innovations, even new businesses... When we all emerge, you may well be looking for investment and so this episode is a conversation I had a few weeks back with Chris Smith, Managing Partner at Playfair Capital. Chris focuses his investing activities on seed (and pre-seed) deals in the UK and Israel and has a particular interest in HealthTech having gone in for uMed, who you might recognise from a very episode of this podcast and Vine health who recently did a £1M seed round. Chris loves finding companies operating in unloved/overlooked sectors that are ripe for disruption and you can hear all about him, his background and his investing right here. https://www.playfaircapital.com/  | https://www.linkedin.com/in/cdgsmith/ www.hs.ventures Twitter @HSVenture Instagram @hs.ventures Linkedin at HS. email us at info@hs.live Your can get our host, Dr. James Somauroo at: www.jamessomauroo.com Twitter @jamessomauroo Instagram @j_soms Linkedin james-somauroo

Episode 83: The Story of Arkeo and Mental Fitness

This week, James is joined by Jana Dowling, founder and CEO of the preventative mental health-tech company, Arkeo. Previously a standup comic, Jana Downling found her way to entrepreneurship via a severe depressive episode. In her recovery, Jana started tracking her mental health and based on the data she was collecting on herself, she was back into work within 6 weeks. She then started social enterprise hiring and training other sufferers of mental health issues and eventually wanted to build a mental fitness brand - a Fitbit for the brain. Episode 81: COVID-19: The Story of Pando and The Flow of Information

This week, we're still getting our heads around coronavirus. We’re newly locked down in the UK, we're all getting used to remote working and as we heard on the last episode with Dr Aman Gupta, the front line is preparing in almost military style for what is going to be a war on coronavirus and a huge influx of patients. To talk more about the clinical and technology implications, I have Dr Lydia Yarlott with me. Lydia is a community paediatrician and founder of the communication app Pando - a communication tool for health and social care that essentially gives clinicians a replacement for Whatsapp with some extra functionality making it ideal for primary, secondary and tertiary care. We chat about how the exchange and flow of information is so important right now and how Pando are helping; we talk identity as a doctor and the privilege and responsibility coming with that right now, Lydia talks about what it’s like in paediatrics and we talk about innovation at a time like this and how things are changing and might change in the future. lydia@hellopando.com | www.pando.com | https://www.linkedin.com/in/lydia-yarlott-473b50138/ www.hs.ventures Twitter @HSVenture Instagram @hs.ventures Linkedin at HS. email us at info@hs.live Your can get our host, Dr. James Somauroo at: www.jamessomauroo.com Twitter @jamessomauroo Instagram @j_soms Linkedin james-somauroo

Episode 80: COVID-19: The View of an ICU Doctor, with Dr Aman Gupta MBBS, BSc, FRCA

For this special episode, James is joined by Dr Aman Gupta: long time friend and fellow digital health guy, frontline anaesthetics and intensive care doctor and has worked at accelerators like DH.L and the NHS Innovation Accelerator, so he speaks our language on this podcast. In this 30 min chat, Aman talks about the coalface of healthcare during this crisis we’re in and for our listeners that might not have ever had that view, it’s important to see and hear why we do what we do in healthtech, which is often to help people like Aman do their jobs when they’re looking after patients. You’re going to hear a really candid and honest view of what’s going on with COVID-19, the preparation of hospitals and their workforce, the fear HCPs are going through, the anguish of their families when they see them go to work everyday. Aman is even buying a caravan to live on his own driveway to protect his wife and young child from the virus. Some really poignant moments in the podcast, so please listen to what Aman has to say…. particularly as he closes out the podcast at the end with his asks of the public… amangupta514@gmail.com | https://www.linkedin.com/in/amangupta514/ www.hs.ventures Twitter @HSVenture Instagram @hs.ventures Linkedin at HS. email us at info@hs.live Your can get our host, Dr. James Somauroo at: www.jamessomauroo.com Twitter @jamessomauroo Instagram @j_soms Linkedin james-somauroo

Episode 76: The Story of uMed and Innovating Clinical Trials 🚑

How do you go from arctic warfare in the military to becoming a healthtech entrepreneur? Should you bunk in the same office with your investors? How do you go from being a first to second-time founder? Can you close a healthtech investment after a guy selling inflatable hammocks? This week, James is joined by Matt Wilson, founder and CEO of uMed, which  enables healthcare providers to efficiently deliver cutting edge research to their patients, whilst radically reducing the barriers for scientists to conduct the studies that underpin our fight against disease.
