E39: What Determines Whether A Startup Will Fail Or Succeed In The Market?

A startup is a risky business. There are so many unknown variables that it’s difficult to predict what could happen if you fail. That’s why it’s important to learn how to navigate uncertainty. When you do, you’ll be able to avoid making costly mistakes. You’ll also be able to make better decisions when things go south. In this episode, we have guests Kim & Todd Saxton, Award-winning professors at the Indiana University Kelly School of Business and co-authors of 'The Titanic Effect'. Kim & Todd talks about how the entrepreneurial journey involves navigating uncertainty rather than taking risks. They talk about that if you can handle uncertainty and create opportunities as well as create challenges then you're in a better position to not just navigate but to take advantage of that uncertainty to create a positive inflection point for your business. They also talk about the two main reasons why startup fails - one is the lack of good market fit and the other one is they are running out of money. Market fit refers to how well a company fits into its target audience. It’s also known as customer fit or product fit. If you don’t know who your customers are, you won’t be able to create the products they want. You may think you know what your customers want, but if you don’t test your assumptions with real customers, you could end up building something nobody wants. "We're both very passionate about enabling the innovators." Kim and Todd Saxton Key takeaways: Startups fail because they lack a good product/market fit & they are running out of money The importance of learning how to navigate and address the uncertainties and unknowns when you start a new venture. Having good discovery skills is important for startups There are many things that make up successful startups. A passionate, driven, and committed founder is very important. Being patient and persistent is also important. Observing, listening, and learning is other things that make up successful startups. A successful leader should be passionate about what he or she does. He or she should also be able to lead by example. Startups need leaders who know how to manage people and projects. Leaders must be able to work well with others, and they must know how to make decisions. Startups are always trying new things. You should too. Don't be afraid to try something new or different. E37: Why Companies Must Invest In People Centered Leadership Development

People-centric Leadership doesn't mean being soft or forgetting the profits. It means thinking of the impact of leadership on the people who worked for you and behaving in such a way that brings out their best for you and the company. As a leader in business, you need to understand what makes people tick. You need to be able to connect with them on a personal level. You need to be empathetic. You need to be a people person. In this episode, we have guest Heather Polivka, CEO of Heather P Solutions. Heather talks about why (and how) to embrace a more people-centric leadership style and why leadership development is essential for any company to succeed. People are the most valuable asset in any company and leaders should focus on making sure that everyone feels valued. She talks about how brands start from the beginning with the brand itself and then define values in terms of behaviors. It's all about making sure they hold themselves accountable for leading inside these behaviors that will make their company succeed. Leaders must take time out to examine ways in which their employees can be inspired to perform better. This can be done by recognizing them for their efforts and giving them positive feedback. Key takeaways: Why does fear impact our productivity zone versus the reward response in our brain The stuff that most companies miss is they do not then define the values in terms of behaviors Why you should adopt a more people-centric approach to leadership. E34: Understand why framing your problem statement matters.

Problems are always solved by people, and business problems today are increasingly more complex and ambiguous. That makes it harder to clearly define and articulate them. Framing helps to structure thinking about these problems by giving them a specific light. In the end, framing helps people to see things in a particular light. In this episode, we have guest Jamie Flinchbaugh Entrepreneur, Senior Executive, Consultant, and Author. Jamie talks about how he has watched people struggle to get better at problem-solving and the most important one is just framing the problem that you're dealing with. So, if we're stuck with any kind of a problem, then we need to have a little bit of tension, a little bit of conflict, challenge each other to think harder, and then break out of our current situation. And those breakthroughs require so much more effort. And so I believe that good problem solving should invite disagreement. "Ownership is about taking the next step, not just seeing a problem and looking back and admiring the problem and just hoping somebody comes along." Jamie Flinchbaugh. E33 Keep Investing In Leadership Skills And Become A Better Leader

Keep Investing In Leadership Skills And Become A Better Leader. In today’s world, organizations need to be proactive about leadership development. Leaders must develop their skills and abilities to meet the challenges of the future. Only two out of five businesses think they are developing leaders who benefit the company. Leaders who adapt well are those who are quick to learn new things. Adaptation is a key part of leadership because you need to know when to change your approach based on what happens around you. You also need to be flexible enough to understand that people may behave differently depending on the situation or environment. Leadership development is an important part of change management. In this episode, we have guest Mark Herschberg, MIT Instructor, Fractional CTO, and the author of the book, The Career Toolkit.
