Testimonial from Chris Hughes @ 00:23:14 He's loving his custom training plan from Ben and can't wait to race Ironman Canada. Can You Still Exercise When Recovering From Overtraining? - Mark says @ 00:27:46 He has been diagnosed with early stage over-training syndrome and was prescribed 1 month to 1.5 months of rest and recovery (he has been training for 7 years straight). He is wondering what he can do to speed his recovery along (supplements, stretching, mobility exercises, resistance training). ~ In my response to Mark, I recommend this article on overtraining recovery. How To Push Yourself While Racing - Brett says @ 00:39:32 She is wondering if you have any tips on how to go harder in the beginning and middle or races and workouts? She feels like she is "saving herself" for the last push of a race or workout. ~ In my response to Brett, I mention how Andy Potts breathes before a race. What Is The Best Blood Test? - Julia says @ 00:48:58 She usually takes 3 to 4 days after running or a spin class (5 days after resistance work) to feel like working out again. Could this be a diet or nutrition issue that is causing her to recover so slowly? ~ In my response to Julia, I recommend a micronutrient analysis - specifically the ION Profile w/40 Amino Acids-METAMETRIX KIT. I also recommend the Longevity test and my article on how to recover quickly from workouts. How To Fix Exercise Induced Anemia - Ken says @ 00:57:01 At a recent checkup at the doctor he found out that although his hematocrit and hemoglobin levels are normal, his red blood cell size is on the low side of normal (mean carpuscular volume) and his ferritin is about 50% of normal. He is not yet anemic but he is headed that direction. He has some mild hemorrhoids but they do not bleed. He had a colonoscopy that was normal. No ulcers. He is an avid triathlete and is wondering if the sport may have caused this issue. ~ In my response to Ken, I recommend he listen to "Legally Increase Your Hematocrit & Oxygen Levels". I also recommend he introduce a lactoferrin supplement and Floradix. Natural Remedies for Tonsil Stones - Zach says @ 01:07:28 Wants to know more about Tonsil Cheese and how to get rid of it. ~ In my response to Zach, I recommend Oil of Oregano. Are Prohormone Supplements Dangerous and 3 Good Testosterone Supplements - Chas says @ 01:13:11 He has been using prohormones supplements. In the past 18 months he has done 4 different long cycles with 3 months between cycles. He focuses on dialing in his pericycling and postcycle supplementation and gets plenty of sleep and stays hydrated even though he is training hard. He wants to build size and strength but he really likes to get the strength boost that leads to better size gains. What are you thoughts on prohormones and do you have any tips other than postcycle therapy to restore endogenous hormones? ~ In my response to Chas, we discuss these prohormone supplements. I recommend this Muscle Gain Pack and a good herbal testosterone blend like RenewMale or Aggressive Strength or Onnit T Plus. -- And don't forget to go to BenGreenfieldFitness.com/love! -- Prior to asking your question, do a search in upper right hand corner of this website for the keywords associated with your question. Is It OK To Be Addicted To Exercise?
Do you feel like you're just not normal when you miss your workout? Do you get grumpy when you skip your planned physical activity? Do you sometimes sacrifice work and relationships to be able to squeeze in an exercise session? Are you addicted to the feeling you get during or after a long run or bike ride or weight lifting workout? Is this stuff normal, and is it OK to be "addicted to exercise"? In today's podcast episode with "The Long Run" author Mishka Shubaly (pictured right), Mishka and I explore exercise addiction, and whether it is OK to be addicted to exercise. Who is Mishka Shubaly? After receiving an expensive MFA in Fiction from Columbia University, Mishka realized he was more interested in playing music in dive bars than writing. He lived out of a Toyota minivan for a year, touring nonstop, and has shared the stage with artists like The Strokes, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs and The Decemberists among others. His Kindle Singles for Amazon have all been bestsellers. He writes true stories about drink, drugs, disasters, desire, deception and their aftermath. His work has been praised for its grit, humor, fearlessness and heart. The book "The Long Run" is his mini-memoir detailing his transformation from alcoholic drug abuser to sober ultrarunner. Mishka Shubaly lives in Brooklyn where he writes music and plays bass for a band called the Freshkills. During our interview, I ask Mishka: -How does the experience you feel during, say, a run compare from a psychological standpoint to how you felt when drinking or using drugs? -Because of things like the runner's high and endorphin release, do you think that people with "addictive personalities" have a greater predisposition towards endurance sports? -Do you think that positive addictions like exercise can be taken too far? -What are your top tips for people who find themselves potentially addicted to exercise, or working out to the extent to which it might damage their body or detract from their relationships or job? Do you have your own questions, comments, feedback or thoughts about whether it is OK to be addicted to exercise? Leave your thoughts at http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com/?p=14483 and be sure to grab Mishka's book for $1.99. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Is It Possible for a Vegan to Be a Healthy Endurance Athlete 10. How Much Water Do You Really Need to Drink Each Day ----------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: As compiled, edited and sometimes read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast "sidekick". How To Know If A Supplement Is Safe - Amie asks a follow-up question from #245 @ 00:16:32 I know you ultimately recommend bitter melon extract over the cissus. However, if one wanted to try Cissus Quadrangularis could you recommend a brand and dosage? ~ In my response to Amie, I recommend FDA.gov search database, and also the previous podcast episode we did about how to know if your supplements are safe. Also, Consumerlab.com approved quality product seal, NSF International dietary supplement certification, and U.S. Pharmacopeia dietary supplement verification program. How To Eat For A Half Ironman - Shelly says @ 00:26:39 She is doing Vineman 70.3 Triathlon in 2 weeks and has been following a low-carb diet and doesn't know what to do for fueling during the race. She has Generation UCan, Energy28 and MAP but she doesn't know what to do in terms of solids. Almond butter? Or is that too much fat? She needs some direction since most of her friends are not fat adapted. ~ In my response to Shelly, I mention The Endurance Pack and also X2Performance. What To Do About Multiple Allergies - Allergy says @ 00:35:17 She has allergies to most things in nature (pollen, rag weed, dust, mold). She tried allergy shots, muscle testing and acupressure therapy and acupuncture, and all the over the counter remedies as well. What do you think about allergies? Are they over diagnosed? And what do you think of these therapies and how they affect people? ~ In my response to Allergy, I recommend an autoimmune diet. I also recommend the podcast episode about How To Fix Exercise Induced Asthmas In Kids. During our discussion, Dr. Minkoff and I discuss the following resources: -Keeping kids away from potential digestive irritants or foods that could trigger an autoimmune reaction, especially gluten (a very good book I recommend on this topic is “Gut & Psychology Syndrome“). -Stool test to asses whether kids are low in HCL, and if they are, getting them on an HCL supplement. -Red blood cell test for magnesium (look for a naturopathic physician in your area who may be able to order this) and use of a magnesium supplement if deficiency is found. -Use of fermented foods and probiotics. -Considering use of a colostrum supplement in a child who was raised on formula and not breastmilk. -Use of anti-inflammatory antioxidants and anti-inflammatory fish oil. -Looking into allergy elimination techniques (i.e. NAET.com) to identify and eliminate potential allergenic foods that kids may be eating. -Educating yourself on the realities and alternatives to immunizations and vaccinations. The website Dr. Minkoff recommends is: http://www.nvic.org How Much Superstarch Should You Use? - Trevor says @ 00:45:20 He went to a Bob Seebohar seminar this past Thursday (promoted by UCAN). Bob was adamant that the recommended servings of 1 per hour was more than enough (even when Trevor mentioned that you, Ben, typically recommended double that per hour) and Bob said that would only be neccessary pre-race (Bob's not a fan of other additives such as X2, MAP). Bob also suggests barely putting any water on it so you can make paste and eat it, which seems counter intuitive to the modality. Trevor's first 70.3 was yesterday. He nursed 2 servings the hour leading up to the swim then only had 2-3 servings on the bike. About 10-15 miles into the bike his quads were basically locking up on him and felt like they were glycogen depleted already. He's not a ketogenic person but he does eat low carb, super-high fat. He experimented with some on-course fuels during the run and one GU Chomp actually gave him a solid burst that lasted a good half hour or so. He hadn't consumed that much sugar at one time in over a year. Is Bob wrong? Did Trevor screw himself by cutting his dosage in half from what you recommend? Running With A Weighted Vest - Matthew says @ 00:56:19 Is switching from Triathlon to Ultra-marathons (signed up for a 50 and wants to do a 100 miler). Is wondering about using a weighted vest. He heard they can make a 1 hour run feel like a 3 hour run. Would that be a good thing to use when training for an ultra? ~ In my response, I recommend ZFO Sports Weighted Vests. What To Do About Runner's Toe - Longtoe says @ 01:01:47 His second toe (the toe next to his big toe) is longer than his big toe and is causes him pain (when running). Is there anything he can do about that? How Women Can Naturally Increase Fertility - Jennifer says @ 01:09:01 She has recently being diagnosed with estrogen dominance, secondary to low progesterone. She is trying to get pregnant and hasn't been able to conceive (hasn't has a period in years). She has stopped exercising and is eating "a lot". Do you have any thoughts on what they can do for fertility? Is this state reversible? ~ In my response, I recommend the "Better Baby Book" by Dave Asprey. I also recommend the following estrogen dominance formula for enhancing fertility: -Consider progesterone cream WITH testing or sublingual progesterone -Do all the recommended Detox Add-Ons and Detox Gear -Vitamin B /antioxidant complex – 1 packet per day -Integrative Therapeutics AM/PM Perimenopause Formula - take per recommendations -Phenocane - 4 caps per day -Di-indolemethane (DIM) - 200mg/day -- And don't forget to go to BenGreenfieldFitness.com/love! -- Prior to asking your question, do a search in upper right hand corner of this website for the keywords associated with your question. What An Extreme Motocross Athlete Can Teach You About Fitness (And A Free Extreme Fitness Routine).
Wil Hahn, a professional motocross racer, broke his hand in practice at the last round of the Supercross series, raced the main event with a broken hand, got 3rd place, then went on to won the overall title by a couple points. Motocross is an extreme sport... ...outdoor motocross races occur in the heat of the day at for 30 minutes plus 2 laps, riding in full gear at lactate threshold for the entire time... ..."armpump” can be a serious, painful problem when racing... ...dangerous levels of dehydration are extremely common... ...and in this BenGreenfieldFitness phone app insider interview with Wil, you'll find out what kind of fitness and nutrition plan is necessary to succeed in one of the toughest sports on the face of the planet. Wil and I compare Ironman triathlon to motocross, talk about Wil's motocross fitness routine, what Wil eats and drinks for motocross, tracking heart rates, racing with an injury, and more! Don't believe that motocross is an extreme sport that just might beat up your body more than any other sport? Then watch this crazy crash sequence video with Wil Hahn, and then keep reading for a motocross fitness routine... An Extreme Fitness Routine Motocross requires a combination of coordination, strength, power and extreme lactic acid buffering capabilities. To build this kind of extreme fitness, try the following full body exercise routine, performed three times per week. -5-10 minute dynamic warm-up (Don’t know what a dynamic warm-up is? Read this mobility article.) -3-4 sets of 6-10 reps of each of the following, performed as either a circuit for an extreme twist, or with 60 seconds to 2 minutes recovery after each exercise for a more traditional approach (get exercise videos at YouTube.com/BenGreenfieldFitness) Vertical Pulling (i.e. pull-up) Vertical Pushing (i.e. overhead press) Horizontal Pulling (i.e. seated row) Horizontal Pushing (i.e. incline bench press) Double or Single Leg Strength (i.e. squat) Lift (i.e. deadlift) 3-4 sets of 6-10 reps of any or all of the following, performed as either a circuit, or with 60 seconds to 2 minutes recovery after each exercise: Slams (i.e. medicine ball slams) Throws (i.e. medicine ball throws) Tosses (i.e. medicine ball underhand throws) Jumps (i.e. double leg box jumps) Finish with 3 sets of 12-15 reps, back-to-back, of each of the following: Twists (i.e. cable torso twists) Core flexion (i.e. hanging leg raises) Then, at a separate time of day, or on your “non-lifting” day, do 20-30 minutes of high intensity interval training, which would include treadmill or cycling intervals, rowing, swimming, sprint repeats etc., preferably with time lengths of 20-60 seconds and rest intervals of 10-30 seconds. Assuming you're also practicing or playing a sport, this routine is more than enough to get you fit fast. If you're not practicing or playing a sport, you may want to add in a 2-4 extra 30-60 minute "tempo" or aerobic workouts. After you take a listen to the interview (using the free BenGreenfieldFitness phone app), or after you try the motocross fitness routine, leave your questions, comments and feedback at http://www.bengreenfieldfitness.com/?p=13203See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

She is currently training for a marathon, is turning 40 next year and has a family history of arthritis. How Much Water Do You Really Need to Drink Each Day ----------------------------------------------------- Listener Q&A: As compiled, edited and sometimes read by Brock, the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast "sidekick". How To Use Hot Baths For Performance -- Michael wrote in to ask @ 00:26:56 In your recent podcast, you mentioned that taking a 20-minute hot bath two days before a hard effort or race could be beneficial. Is there anything to the frequency of this practice? Currently, I'm training for for an iron-distance triathlon, so every Saturday is a long ride followed by a transition run (and Sunday is a long run). If I did a soak EVERY Thursday, would that be too much... or to a degree that the practice would lose its effectiveness as you reported? Natural Remedies for Dry Eyes -- Jenny says @ 00:34:09 She has had a problem with her eyes being really dry. She has used drops and increased her omega3s. That didn't help and it has started to effect her vision as well. Her doctor told her that she needs to use a prescription eye drop for the rest of her life - and she really doesn't want to do that! Do you have any tips on getting her eyes not to be so dry. ~ In my response, I recommend SuperEssentials fish oil for dry eyes. I also recommend this portable humidifier. How To Enhance Vision -- Benjamin wrote in to ask @ 00:42:15 I just found out from my optometrist that I may need vision correction, and of course, they're recommending I go with contact lenses or prescription glasses. But I'm interested in whether there are natural ways to fix your vision or enhance your eyesight without necessarily using glasses or contact lenses. ~ In my response to both Jenny and Benjamin, I discuss The Vision Gym. How Your Feet Affect Your Butt -- Jim says @ 00:49:28 He has been rolling his feet out with a golf ball lately (after some hard training and racing) and experienced some extreme glute spasms later in the day while doing some yard work. Could the two be related? ~ In my response I talk about Glute Imbalances article Bret Contreraras. High Heart Rates on a Ketogenic Diet -- Ketoman says @ 00:59:15 He follows a ketogenic diet and checks his heart rate regularly. His HR in the morning is mid-to-low 50s. But lately he has noticed that when he does intervals (running or on the bike) that his HR goes bonkers (into the 180s) and his tires out quickly later in the day. Could it be a lack of carbohydrate for a workout that takes him out of zone 2 later in the day? ~ In my response, I reference this good article about how cutting carbs doesn't decrease strength/power and also the podcast on ketogenesis with Jimmy Moore. Strength Training For Trail Runners -- Terry says @ 01:09:07 Is looking for some workout advice for his 17-year-old trail running son who wants to go to the gym. ~ In my response, I recommend this Trail Running Terror plan from TrainingPeaks. How Your Ears Affect Your Muscles -- Troy says @ 01:16:32 For years massage therapists have told him that his left side it very tight (like massaging a brick) and they don't know why (he is active and spends time stretching). He is nearly deaf in his left ear and is wondering if that could be causing some of the tightness. He would like to hear your thoughts on that. ~ In my response to Troy, I reference my interview with Eric Cobb from Z-Health and my article on balance for athletes. -- And don't forget to go to BenGreenfieldFitness.com/love! -- Prior to asking your question, do a search in upper right hand corner of this website for the keywords associated with your question.
